Since 2002, it has been possible to bath in Copenhagen's harbour. Popular among its inhabitants, bathing shows us a new relationship between people and their city, where waterfront areas allow the inhabitants to relax and expose their bodies to the sun, the ground, the wind and otherness. Bathing in the city has the function of identifying with a common Nordic culture, which is expressed through a liberated relationship to nudity. These questions are the main topic focus of our current PhD thesis. In this work, we ask ourselves questions about our personal relationship to the survey. Based on research questionning the researcher's subjectivity when participating in the activity being studied, we will question the methodological biases that can arise from the proximity to the field. What about when we study urban bathing in a foreign country? Do we have to bath when we have bathing as an object of study? By being an observer of situations where bodies are stripped and by participating myself in these experiences of stripped otherness, does this investigation push into voyeurism? This article focuses on the methodological choices made to carry out the study of urban bathing practices. Based on this experience, this article suggests a personal reflection on the effects of investigation the investigator is linked to the field by filiation. We will discuss the relevance of participation in activities during observation, both to enable the production of experiential data useful to the investigator, and to facilitate contact with respondents and to benefit from bonding attitudes leading to more liberated interviews.
