Mountable controller with parallelized VERSA Module Eurocard (VME) (MPV) is a VME-compatible system having a parallel readout architecture. This article presents the system architecture and its data acquisition performance. In this system, the readout sequence is implemented in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to achieve the ideal VME bus speed. Data from multiple VME slave modules are read out in parallel, merged, and sent to a server. Maximum data throughput of 400 Mbps was achieved. Thus, the MPV system can dramatically improve the performance of VME data acquisition systems.

The β-delayed one- and two-neutron emission probabilities (P_{1n} and P_{2n}) of 20 neutron-rich nuclei with N≥82 have been measured at the RIBF facility of the RIKEN Nishina Center. P_{1n} of ^{130,131}Ag, ^{133,134}Cd, ^{135,136}In, and ^{138,139}Sn were determined for the first time, and stringent upper limits were placed on P_{2n} for nearly all cases. β-delayed two-neutron emission (β2n) was unambiguously identified in ^{133}Cd and ^{135,136}In, and their P_{2n} were measured. Weak β2n was also detected from ^{137,138}Sn. Our results highlight the effect of the N=82 and Z=50 shell closures on β-delayed neutron emission probability and provide stringent benchmarks for newly developed macroscopic-microscopic and self-consistent global models with the inclusion of a statistical treatment of neutron and γ emission. The impact of our measurements on r-process nucleosynthesis was studied in a neutron star merger scenario. Our P_{1n} and P_{2n} have a direct impact on the odd-even staggering of the final abundance, improving the agreement between calculated and observed Solar System abundances. The odd isotope fraction of Ba in r-process-enhanced (r-II) stars is also better reproduced using our new data.

At the RIKEN Nishina Center, exotic neutron-rich isotopes of Ba, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd were measured. This work reports their half-lives (T1/2) and β-delayed neutron-emission probabilities (Pxn). The setup consisted of the BigRIPS in-flight separator for particle identification, the Advanced Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) for ions and β detection, and the BRIKEN neutron counter for neutron detection. Using this arrangement, 4 new T1/2 and 14 new P1n were measured. Furthermore, 38 T1/2 and 2 P1n values were remeasured, decreasing the uncertainties for some of them. In addition to improving predictions of nucleosynthesis models that describe the production of the rare-earth peak at A ∼ 160 via the r-process, these additional experimental data should help to constrain theoretical models for calculations of T1/2 and Pxn in this region.

Neutron-rich Pm ( Z = 61 ) isotopes were studied by delayed γ -ray spectroscopy at RIBF, RIKEN Nishina Center using the in-flight fission of a 345 MeV/nucleon U 238 beam. A cluster-type Ge detector array, EURICA, was used to measure the delayed γ rays from stopped ions. Isomeric γ decays were observed in Pm 159 and Pm 161 with half-lives of 4.97(12) μ s and 0.79(4) μ s , respectively. Level schemes for Pm 159 and Pm 161 were constructed in this study. The isomeric states of Pm 159 and Pm 161 could be interpreted as two quasiparticle excitations of neutrons with the configurations of ν ( 7 / 2 [ 633 ] ⊗ 5 / 2 [ 523 ] ) and ν ( 7 / 2 [ 633 ] ⊗ 1 / 2 [ 521 ] ) , respectively. They are analogous to the isomers that have been observed systematically in other even-mass N = 98 and N = 100 isotones in this region. A projected shell model calculation was performed and it reproduced the order of three-quasiparticle states only if new Nilsson parameters with an N -dependent spin-orbit interaction were used. This work demonstrates that the strength of spin-orbit interactions in standard Nilsson parameters needs to be modified to study the properties of neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei around A = 165 , and provides new evidence supporting the existence of the deformed N = 98 subshell gap in odd-mass nuclei for the first time.

The time-dependent behavior of the silicon melt flow in the industrial scaled 300-mm diameter silicon Czochralski growth with a transverse magnetic field was investigated by both the experiment and numerical simulation. The measured temperatures at multiple positions in the melt showed oscillation with the same period but different amplitudes. The calculated results by the fully three-dimensional numerical simulation represented the measurement results and provided a qualitative explanation to this phenomenon. The periodic change of melt flow pattern occurred via the generating, descending, and vanishing of the cold plume. This behavior was driven by the buoyancy, which was similar to the flow under the non-magnetic field reported by Ozoe and Sung.

The β-delayed neutron-emission probabilities of 28 exotic neutron-rich isotopes of Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd were measured for the first time at RIKEN Nishina Center using the Advanced Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) and the BRIKEN neutron detector array. The existing β-decay half-life (T 1/2) database was significantly increased toward more neutron-rich isotopes, and uncertainties for previously measured values were decreased. The new data not only constrain the theoretical predictions of half-lives and β-delayed neutron-emission probabilities, but also allow for probing the mechanisms of formation of the high-mass wing of the rare-earth peak located at A ≈ 160 in the r-process abundance distribution through astrophysical reaction network calculations. An uncertainty quantification of the calculated abundance patterns with the new data shows a reduction of the uncertainty in the rare-earth peak region. The newly introduced variance-based sensitivity analysis method offers valuable insight into the influence of important nuclear physics inputs on the calculated abundance patterns. The analysis has identified the half-lives of 168Sm and of several gadolinium isotopes as some of the key variables among the current experimental data to understand the remaining abundance uncertainty at A = 167–172.

Freezing triggers extracellular ice formation leading to cell dehydration and deformation during a freeze–thaw cycle. Many plant species increase their freezing tolerance during exposure to low, non-freezing temperatures, a process termed cold acclimation. In addition, exposure to mild freezing temperatures after cold acclimation evokes a further increase in freezing tolerance (sub-zero acclimation). Previous transcriptome and proteome analyses indicate that cell wall remodelling may be particularly important for sub-zero acclimation. In the present study, we used a combination of immunohistochemical, chemical and spectroscopic analyses to characterize the cell walls of Arabidopsis thaliana and characterized a mutant in the XTH19 gene, encoding a xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase (XTH). The mutant showed reduced freezing tolerance after both cold and sub-zero acclimation, compared to the Col-0 wild type, which was associated with differences in cell wall composition and structure. Most strikingly, immunohistochemistry in combination with 3D reconstruction of centres of rosette indicated that epitopes of the xyloglucan-specific antibody LM25 were highly abundant in the vasculature of Col-0 plants after sub-zero acclimation but absent in the XTH19 mutant. Taken together, our data shed new light on the potential roles of cell wall remodelling for the increased freezing tolerance observed after low temperature acclimation.

We performed the first direct mass measurements of neutron-rich scandium, titanium, and vanadium isotopes around the neutron number 40 at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory using the time-of-flight magnetic-rigidity technique. The atomic mass excesses of ^{58-60}Sc, ^{60-62}Ti, and ^{62-64}V were measured for the first time. The experimental results show that the two-neutron separation energies in the vicinity of ^{62}Ti increase compared to neighboring nuclei. This shows that the masses of Ti isotopes near N=40 are affected by the Jahn-Teller effect. Therefore, a development of Jahn-Teller stabilization appears below the Cr isotopes, and the systematics in Sc, Ti, and V isotopes suggest that ^{62}Ti is located close to the peak of the Jahn-Teller effect.

Fully three dimensional (3D) numerical simulation model of the heat and mass transfer in the silicon (Si) Czochralski growth with a transverse magnetic field (MCZ) was developed. Time transient calculation of heat and mass transfer in the industrial scale crystal growth of 300 mm diameter was performed under the quasi steady state assumption. The model predicts the completely asymmetrically 3D melt flow and off-centered temperature distributions, different from the previous works. The temperature distribution measured experimentally by thermocouples, beneath the melt surface along the azimuthal direction, was almost the same as the model prediction, providing a strong support for the 3D simulation model.

We made an experiment to measure half-lives T1/2 and neutron emission probabilities Pxn of nuclei around mass 80, aiming to improve r-process abundance calculations around the first abundance peak with a new dedicated experimental setup at RIKEN. Details of the experiment and a few preliminary results are presented.

We perform the first direct mass measurements of neutron-rich calcium isotopes beyond neutron number 34 at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory by using the time-of-flight magnetic-rigidity technique. The atomic mass excesses of ^{55-57}Ca are determined for the first time to be -18650(160), -13510(250), and -7370(990) keV, respectively. We examine the emergence of neutron magicity at N=34 based on the new atomic masses. The new masses provide experimental evidence for the appearance of a sizable energy gap between the neutron 2p_{1/2} and 1f_{5/2} orbitals in ^{54}Ca, comparable to the gap between the neutron 2p_{3/2} and 2p_{1/2} orbitals in ^{52}Ca. For the ^{56}Ca nucleus, an open-shell property in neutrons is suggested.

Many choices are available in order to evaluate large radioactive decay networks. %multi-particle decay data. There are many parameters that influence the calculated $\beta$-decay delayed single and multi-neutron emission branching fractions. We describe assumptions about the decay model, background, and other parameters and their influence on $\beta$-decay delayed multi-neutron emission analysis. An analysis technique, the ORNL BRIKEN analysis procedure, for determining $\beta$-delayed multi-neutron branching ratios in $\beta$-neutron precursors produced by means of heavy-ion fragmentation is presented. The technique is based on estimating the initial activities of zero, one, and two neutrons occurring in coincidence with an ion-implant and $\beta$ trigger. The technique allows one to extract $\beta$-delayed multi-neutron decay branching ratios measured with the hybrid \textsuperscript{3}He BRIKEN neutron counter. As an example, two analyses of the $\beta$-neutron emitter \textsuperscript{77}Cu based on different {\it a priori} assumptions are presented along with comparisons to literature values., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

A new detection system has been installed at the RIKEN Nishina Center (Japan) to investigate decay properties of very neutron-rich nuclei. The setup consists of three main parts: a moderated neutron counter , a detection system sensitive to the implantation and decay of radioactive ions, and γ -ray detectors. We describe here the setup, the commissioning experiment and some selected results demonstrating its performance for the measurement of half-lives and β -delayed neutron emission probabilities. The methodology followed in the analysis of the data is described in detail. Particular emphasis is placed on the correction of the accidental neutron background.

Although dorsal and caudal fin deformities (curvature), abnormal body color patterns, and fluctuating asymmetry of meristic characters have been previously reported for white-spotted charr (Salvelinus leucomaenis), the incidence of skeletally deformed individuals in the wild are extremely rare. Here, we report on skeletally deformed individuals of white-spotted charr with extremely truncated upper jaw, in a headwater reach of the Yoneshiro River, northern Honshu, Japan. In this study, we examined the genetic diversity of deformed and non-deformed populations of white-spotted charr using polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers. We also compared individual growth histories of deformed individuals with normal individuals using a back-calculation of fish lengths at previous ages from otolith annuli. We collected 41 and 100 individuals from the below- and above-waterfall sites, respectively. Of these, two individuals from the above-waterfall site were skeletally deformed, whereas the other individuals had a normal morphology. Microsatellite DNA genetic diversities of the above-waterfall population were notably lower than those of the just below-waterfall population. Individuals of the above-waterfall population had significantly higher internal relatedness and lower standardized heterozygosity values compared with those of the below-waterfall population, indicating higher inbreeding situation of the above-waterfall individuals compared with individuals in the below-waterfall site. Back-calculation of individual growth using otoliths revealed that deformed individuals grew significantly slower than sympatric normal individuals. Although incidence of deformed individuals in the wild might be related with accumulated inbreeding as suggested for other fishes, mechanisms for their long-term persistence in the wild remain unclear.

The β-decay half-lives of 94 neutron-rich nuclei ^{144-151}Cs, ^{146-154}Ba, ^{148-156}La, ^{150-158}Ce, ^{153-160}Pr, ^{156-162}Nd, ^{159-163}Pm, ^{160-166}Sm, ^{161-168}Eu, ^{165-170}Gd, ^{166-172}Tb, ^{169-173}Dy, ^{172-175}Ho, and two isomeric states ^{174m}Er, ^{172m}Dy were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, providing a new experimental basis to test theoretical models. Strikingly large drops of β-decay half-lives are observed at neutron-number N=97 for _{58}Ce, _{59}Pr, _{60}Nd, and _{62}Sm, and N=105 for _{63}Eu, _{64}Gd, _{65}Tb, and _{66}Dy. Features in the data mirror the interplay between pairing effects and microscopic structure. r-process network calculations performed for a range of mass models and astrophysical conditions show that the 57 half-lives measured for the first time play an important role in shaping the abundance pattern of rare-earth elements in the solar system.

To elucidate the petromyzontid speciation process, the genetic independence of the fluvial non-parasitic populations within the anadromous parasitic Lethenteron camtschaticum was estimated by using polymorphic microsatellite loci. Abundant gene flow was revealed in multitemporal scales between potentially sympatric populations, suggesting ongoing gene flow resulting from imperfect size-assortative mating between them and plastic determination of life histories. On the contrary, landlocked fluvial non-parasitic populations in the upper region of dams were genetically divergent from anadromous parasitic populations. The temporal heterogeneity of gene flow, i.e. contemporary little gene flow but significant gene flow over the long-term between the landlocked fluvial non-parasitic and anadromous parasitic populations was elucidated. In addition, the divergence time of isolation of the landlocked populations from the ancestral anadromous parasitic population was estimated to have occurred 17.9-428.2 years ago, which includes the construction times of an initial dam c. 90 years ago. These instances indicate that the landlocked populations should have very recently been established, and subsequent accumulation of divergence and development of reproductive isolation are predicted. The present landlocked fluvial non-parasitic populations should be analogous to the founder populations in terms of petromyzontid speciation. The data also strongly support the hypothesis of multitemporal and multispatial speciation in the petromyzontid stem-satellite species complex.

In this paper, the authors present a procedure of assessing equipment health for substation maintenance and upgrade planning based on the pair-wise comparison of analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The developed tool for substation asset management measures and visualizes the health conditions of substation equipment in multiple criteria. The criteria selected are to evaluate such issues as age, load factor, the number of obsolete equipment, equipment showing symptoms of failure, the same type equipment as the one failed, noise levels (the degree of achievement of noise regulation), and the amount of PCB-contaminated insulation oil. The assessment also considers the estimated changes in future years. Priority weights for the assessment criteria, differing in physical measurement units, are aggregated by the pair-wise comparison of AHP. The developed assessment procedure was applied to 74 substations in the Tokyo Electric Power service areas to evaluate its effectiveness and practicality.

This paper is concerned with the stability problem of uncertain T-S fuzzy systems with time-varying delay by employing a further improved free-weighting matrix approach. By taking the relationship among the time-varying delay, its upper bound and their difference into account, some less conservative LMI-based delay-dependent stability criteria are obtained without ignoring any useful terms in the derivative of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional. Finally, two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and the merits of the proposed methods.

Taking the relationship among the time-varying delay, its upper bound and their difference into account and using $$\hbox{It}\hat{o}\hbox{'s}$$ differential formula, some improved LMI-based delay-dependent stability criteria for stochastic neural networks are obtained without ignoring any terms, which guarantee systems globally robustly stochastically stable in the mean square. Finally, three numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and the benefits of the proposed method.

Wind power generation using an unlimited, natural energy has been getting attention regarding environmental issues in recent years, and the installed capacity of wind power generation system is increasing at a rapid pace, resulting in deterioration of power quality especially in frequency and voltage. This fact will be a big problem in restricting large capacity of wind farms. This paper proposes a new frequency converter: rotary frequency converter (RFC) to moderate the electric output from wind generation, which is to be installed between a set of wind generators and a grid, providing a smoothed electric output, promoting the wind power generation introduction. This mainly consists of a synchronous machine and the adjustable-speed machine. Independent controls of input/output voltage, active power, and reactive power offer electrical separation between the two networks. Experimental study of a prototype model and its characteristics, especially dynamic control, is discussed in this paper. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. That ever increasing electricity consumption, progress in power deregulation, and rising public awareness for environment have created more interest in fuel cell distributed generation. Among different types of fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) manifest themselves as great potential applications due to many advantages such as low emission, high efficiency, and high power rating. On the other hand, SOFC systems are beneficial because they can convert fuel such as natural gas (almost CH4) which is supplied by widespread systems in many countries into electricity efficiently using internal reforming. In facts, the load demand changes flexibly and fuel cell life time decreases by rapid thermal change. Its lifetime may be extended by maintaining in appropriate temperature. Therefore, it is important to acquire the load following performance as well as control of operation temperature. This paper addresses components of the simple SOFC power unit model with heat exchanger (HX) included. Typical dynamical submodels are used to follow the variation of load demand at a local location that considers temperature characteristics using the Matlab-SIMULINK program.

This paper proposes a practical and effective model for the generation forecasting of a wind farm with an emphasis on its scheduling and trading in a wholesale electricity market. A novel forecasting model is developed based on indepth investigations of meteorological information. This model adopts a two-stage hybrid network with Bayesian clustering by dynamics and support vector regression. The proposed structure is robust with different input data types and can deal with the nonstationarity of wind speed and generation series well. Once the network is trained, we can straightforward predict the 48-h ahead wind power generation. To demonstrate the effectiveness, the model is applied and tested on a 74-MW wind farm located in the southwest Oklahoma of the United States.

Several studies have reported increased fat oxidation with diacylglycerol (DAG) oil consumption. However, the effects of long-term DAG oil consumption on energy metabolism remain to be investigated.The objective of this study was to compare the effects of 14 days of either DAG or triacylglycerol (TAG) oil consumption on substrate oxidation, energy expenditure (EE) and dietary fat oxidation.Eight males and six females participated in this randomized, double-blind, crossover feeding study. Each patient consumed the 14-day controlled test diet containing either 10 g day(-1) of DAG or TAG oil for acclimatization before a respiratory chamber measurement, followed by a 2-week washout period between diet treatments. Substrate oxidation and EE were measured in the respiratory chamber at the end of each dietary treatment. The patients consumed test oil as 15% of total caloric intake in the respiratory chamber (mean test oil intake was 36.1+/-6.6 g day(-1)).Twenty-four hour fat oxidation was significantly greater with 14 days of DAG oil consumption compared with TAG oil consumption (78.6+/-19.6 and 72.6+/-14.9 g day(-1), respectively, P0.05). There were no differences in body weight or body composition between diet treatments. Dietary fat oxidation was determined using the recovery rate of (13)CO(2) in breath, and was significantly enhanced with DAG oil consumption compared with TAG oil consumption, measured over 22 h after ingestion of (13)C-labelled triolein. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) was significantly greater with DAG oil consumption compared with TAG oil consumption (1766+/-337 and 1680+/-316 kcal day(-1), respectively, P0.05).Consumption of DAG oil for 14 days stimulates both fat oxidation and RMR compared with TAG oil consumption, which may explain the greater loss of body weight and body fat with DAG oil consumption that has been observed in weight-loss studies.

This correspondence paper focuses on the problem of exponential stability for neural networks with a time-varying delay. The relationship among the time-varying delay, its upper bound, and their difference is taken into account. As a result, an improved linear-matrix-inequality-based delay-dependent exponential stability criterion is obtained without ignoring any terms in the derivative of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate its effectiveness.
