1. Trapping and release of deuterium in helium-induced tungsten fuzz at low temperature

Abstract: The release of deuterium (D) atoms from a nanostructure ‘fuzz’ tungsten (W) after a sequential plasma irradiation of helium (He) and D was explored. Thermal desorption spectroscopy revealed that more than 60% of total D amount was already released at >423 K. A sophisticated measurement with an aberration-corrected scanning TEM combined with electron energy-loss spectrometer (STEM-EELS) directly showed the trapping of D atoms into He bubbles after the plasma irradiation and the release of D from the He bubbles at elevated temperature at 423 K. The He bubbles containing D were characterized by (i) relatively large volume and (ii) small He energy-loss shift below 2 eV. It is suggested that the shifts in the energy-loss peaks of He and D could be used as indicators of D absorption within He bubbles.

2. Development and x-ray imaging performance of Tb-doped GdAlO3-αAl2O3 submicron-diameter phase-separated scintillator fibers

Abstract: Scintillators are key components in high-energy x-ray detectors for x-ray computed tomography, which are applied in medical diagnosis, nondestructive testing, and security inspection. Scintillators in x-ray imaging are required to have both high spatial resolution and sensitivity; however, a trade-off between spatial resolution and sensitivity exists. To improve the sensitivity of a scintillator, its thickness must be increased; however, spatial resolution deteriorates with increasing thickness. Here, we developed a well-aligned Tb-doped GdAlO3-αAl2O3 phase-separated scintillator fiber (PSSF) with a diameter of 1.25-μm by a micro-pulling-down method. The luminescence, scintillation, and imaging performances of a grown PSSF sample were evaluated. X-ray-induced radioluminescence measurements of the sample showed Tb3+ 4f–4f emissions in the wavelength range of 470–700 nm, and the maximum emission peak was at 550 nm. The contrast transfer function at 10 lp/mm was 82% for both 270 and 500 μm-thick PSSF samples. We calculated the luminescence index, which is the product of the scintillator’s light yield and sensitivity, of the samples and compared their values with commercially available conventional CsI:Tl columnar scintillators. The Tb-doped GdAlO3-αAl2O3 PSSF exhibits higher contrast transfer function and luminescence index values at above 60 keV x-ray region compared with the tested conventional scintillators.

3. GAN‐based tone curve learning for colour transfer

Abstract: Abstract A new approach for reflecting the colour tone of a reference image on the input image is proposed. Depending on the source and reference image pairs, conventional statistical colour transfer methods often lead to undesirable colour transfer. Conversely, deep learning methods depend on prior learning, which results in unnatural output images when inappropriate images are learned; moreover, in such situations, analysing what kind of colour transformation has actually been performed is difficult. This state of the art motivates the proposal of a new colour transfer method that estimates tone curves based on generative adversarial nets. This method does not require any data set other than input and reference images, thus enabling a more appropriate colour transfer. The superior output of the proposed method compared with some baseline approaches is demonstrated through experiments.

Abstract: Cerebellar-brain inhibition (CBI) is a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) paradigm indexing excitability of cerebellar projections to motor cortex (M1). Stimulation involved with CBI is often considered to be uncomfortable, and alternative ways to index connectivity between cerebellum and the cortex would be valuable. We therefore sought to assess the utility of electroencephalography in conjunction with TMS (combined TMS-EEG) to record the response to CBI. A total of 33 volunteers (25.7 ± 4.9 years, 20 females) participated across three experiments. These investigated EEG responses to CBI induced with a figure-of-eight (F8; experiment 1) or double cone (DC; experiment 2) conditioning coil over cerebellum, in addition to multisensory sham stimulation (experiment 3). Abstract: Super-Kamiokande has been searching for neutrino bursts characteristic of core-collapse supernovae continuously, in real time, since the start of operations in 1996. The present work focuses on detecting more distant supernovae whose event rate may be too small to trigger in real time, but may be identified using an offline approach. The analysis of data collected from 2008 to 2018 found no evidence of distant supernovae bursts. This establishes an upper limit of 0.29 yr−1 on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to 100 kpc at 90% C.L. For supernovae that fail to explode and collapse directly to black holes the limit reaches to 300 kpc.

Abstract: In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $\mu$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. 13. Utilising TMS-EEG to assess the response to cerebellar-brain inhibition

Abstract: BackgroundCerebellar-brain inhibition (CBI) is a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) paradigm indexing excitability of cerebellar projections to motor cortex (M1). Stimulation involved with CBI is often considered to be uncomfortable, and alternative ways to index connectivity between cerebellum and the cortex would be valuable. Utilising electroencephalography in conjunction with TMS (combined TMS-EEG) to record the response to CBI has the potential to achieve this, but has not been attempted previously.ObjectiveTo investigate the utility of TMS-EEG for characterising cerebellar-cortical interactions recruited by CBI.MethodsA total of 33 volunteers (25.7 ± 4.9 years, 20 females) participated across three experiments. These investigated EEG responses to CBI induced with a figure-of-eight (F8; experiment 1) or double cone (DC; experiment 2) conditioning coil over cerebellum, in addition to multisensory sham stimulation (experiment 3).ResultsBoth F8 and DC coils suppressed early TMS-evoked EEG potentials (TEPs) produced by TMS to M1 (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the TEP produced by CBI stimulation was related to the motor inhibitory response to CBI recorded in a hand muscle (P < 0.05), but only when using the DC coil. Multisensory sham stimulation failed to modify the M1 TEP.ConclusionsCerebellar conditioning produced changes in the M1 TEP that were not apparent following sham stimulation, and that were related to the motor inhibitory effects of CBI. Our findings therefore suggest it is possible to index the response to CBI using TMS-EEG. In addition, while both F8 and DC coils appear to recruit cerebellar projections, the nature of these may be different.

Abstract: We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. Abstract: The Super-Kamiokande detector can be used to search for neutrinos in time coincidence with gravitational waves detected by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration (LVC). Both low-energy ($7-100$ MeV) and high-energy ($0.1-10^5$ GeV) samples were analyzed in order to cover a very wide neutrino spectrum. Follow-ups of 36 (out of 39) gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-2 catalog were examined; no significant excess above the background was observed, with 10 (24) observed neutrinos compared with 4.8 (25.0) expected events in the high-energy (low-energy) samples. A statistical approach was used to compute the significance of potential coincidences. For each observation, p-values were estimated using neutrino direction and LVC sky map ; the most significant event (GW190602_175927) is associated with a post-trial p-value of $7.8\%$ ($1.4\sigma$). Additionally, flux limits were computed independently for each sample and by combining the samples. The energy emitted as neutrinos by the identified gravitational wave sources was constrained, both for given flavors and for all-flavors assuming equipartition between the different flavors, independently for each trigger and by combining sources of the same nature., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. v2: adding corrections from The Astrophysical Journal review

17. Preparation of novel blue phosphate pigments in imitation of turquoise

Abstract: As a novel blue pigment, various hydrated copper aluminum phosphate imitating turquoise, CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8.4H2O, were prepared by mixing copper nitrate solution, aluminum nitrate solution, phosphoric acid, and sodium hydroxide solution. Samples with similar chemical composition with turquoise were prepared. The obtained powders were evaluated with X-ray diffraction, infrared spectra, ultraviolet-visible reflectance spectra, and L*a*b* color space. Further, other related compositions were also investigated. Samples heated at low temperature were light blue powder. By heating at 700 ºC, the color of materials changed to deep green. Samples with high copper ratio indicated lower L* value and small a* and b* values. The low copper ratio was suitable to obtain light blue and deep green phosphate pigments. Resumo Como novo pigmento azul, vários fosfatos hidratados de cobre e alumínio imitando turquesa, CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8.4H2O, foram preparados misturando solução de nitrato de cobre, solução de nitrato de alumínio, ácido fosfórico e solução de hidróxido de sódio. Amostras com composição química semelhante à turquesa foram preparadas. Os pós obtidos foram avaliados com difração de raios X, espectros de infravermelho, espectros de refletância no ultravioleta-visível e espaço de cores L*a*b*. Além disso, outras composições relacionadas também foram investigadas. Amostras aquecidas a baixas temperaturas resultaram em pós de cor azul claro. Ao aquecer a 700 ºC, a cor dos materiais mudou para verde intenso. Amostras com alta proporção de cobre indicaram menor valor de L* e pequenos valores de a* e b*. A baixa proporção de cobre foi adequada para obter pigmentos de fosfato azul claro e verde escuro.

Abstract: The induction of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) is believed to promote tumor cell motility and invasion. Using polymeric gel substrates with different viscoelasticity as microenvironment of cell culture substrates that influences cancer progression and metastatic potential, we have examined the effect of the viscoelasticity on the direct relation between cellular motility and mesenchymal properties with induction of EMT in MDA-MB-231 cells. The MDA-MB-231 cells cultured on gel substrates showed different cellular morphologies, and these morphological differences were robustly correlated with cellular migration speed (S) and damping coefficient (tanδ) of gel substrates (not substrate stiffness). The linkage between the acquisition of the mesenchymal phenotype in the cells through the induction of EMT mediated by a stiffer substrate and the promotion of cellular motility was not observed. Understanding the biology of EMT with or without linkage to cellular motility provides new approaches in development of new therapeutic strategies.

Abstract: Using polymeric fiber substrates with different mechanical features and surface topographies (fiber alignments) as microenvironment of cell culture substrates that influences cancer progression and metastatic potential, we have demonstrated systematically the effect of stiffness and topographies on two different types of breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7). The cells cultured on different substrates both normoxic and hypoxic conditions showed different morphologies, and these morphological differences were correlated with cellular motility and gene expression. We discussed the effect of hypoxia on gene expression and cellular motility to understand the cell–cell and cell–substrate interactions. The progresses of microenvironment-mediated tumor progression in artificial extracellular matrix explored the design criteria to understand the cancer progression mechanism and metastatic potential.

Abstract: The radioactivity background are among the most dangerous background for low energy neutrino analysis in Super-Kamiokande (SK), like the solar neutrino analysis. Among them, the main contribution is coming from $^{222}$Rn, which is spread in the detector's water due to the water source and to the photo multiplier (PMT) emanations. Up to now, its exact distribution in the detector was not known. Using our knowledge of the radon concentration in the detector water, and the SK-IV solar data, we developed a model of the radon distribution in the detector. The uncertainty on the Rn concentration associated with this model was estimated to be $\sim0.1$ mBq/m$^{3}$

Abstract: Remdesivir is an antiviral drug that results in clinical improvement after five days of treatment and accelerates recovery by 31%. No studies have discussed the pharmacokinetic analysis of remdesivir in patients with severe COVID-19 requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). A 63-year-old American man who underwent mechanical ventilation and ECMO for severe COVID-19 was administered remdesivir for ten days. The loading dosage was 200 mg at 7 PM on day 12 and 100 mg daily at 0:00 PM from day 13–21, administered within 1 h. The pharmacokinetic analysis was performed. The serum creatinine concentration was within the normal range of 0.5–0.7 mg/dL during treatment. According to the pharmacokinetic analysis, the plasma concentrations of remdesivir and GS-441524 4 h after administration (C4) were 662 ng/mL and 58 ng/mL, respectively, and the concentrations 18 h after administration (C18) were 32 ng/mL and 44 ng/mL, respectively. Therefore, the half-life of remdesivir and GS-441524 was 3.2 and 35.1 h, respectively. Monitoring the plasma concentrations of remdesivir and GS-441524 in patients undergoing ECMO may be necessary., Highlights • A COVID-19 patient undergoing ECMO was administered remdesivir. • The loading dosage was 200 mg at 7:00 PM on day 12. • From days 13–21, it was 100 mg daily at 0:00 PM administered within 1 h. • The half-lives of remdesivir and GS-441524 were 3.2 and 35.1 h, respectively. • Plasma concentrations of remdesivir and GS-441524 must be monitored during ECMO.

Abstract: A search for neutrinos produced in coincidence with Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRB) was conducted with the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. Between December 2008 and March 2017, the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network recorded 2208 GRBs that occurred during normal SK operation. Several time windows around each GRB were used to search for coincident neutrino events. No statistically significant signal in excess of the estimated backgrounds was detected. The $\bar\nu_e$ fluence in the range from 8 MeV to 100 MeV in positron total energy for $\bar\nu_e+p\rightarrow e^{+}+n$ was found to be less than $\rm 5.07\times10^5$ cm$^{-2}$ per GRB in 90\% C.L. Abstract: Super-Kamiokande (SK) is a 50-kt water Cherenkov detector, instrumented with $\sim 13$k photo-multipliers and running since 1996. It is sensitive to neutrinos with energies ranging from 4.5 MeV to several TeV. A new framework has been developed for the follow-up of gravitational wave (GW) alerts issued by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration (LVC). Neutrinos are searched for, using a 1000-second time window centered on the alert time and in both SK low-energy and high-energy samples. Such observation can then be used to constrain the neutrino emission from the GW source. The significance of potential signals has been obtained by comparing neutrino direction with the localization of the GW. The computation of limits on incoming neutrino flux and on the total energy emitted in neutrinos by the source has been performed for the different neutrino flavors. The results using the LVC GWTC-2 catalog (covering O3a period) are presented, as well as the outlooks for the future real-time public release of follow-ups for the O4 period (in 2022) and beyond.

Abstract: We have searched for proton decay via p→e+π0 and p→μ+π0 modes with the enlarged fiducial volume data of Super-Kamiokande from April 1996 to May 2018, which corresponds to 450 kton·years exposure. We have accumulated about 25% more livetime and enlarged the fiducial volume of the Super-Kamiokande detector from 22.5 kton to 27.2 kton for this analysis, so that 144 kton·years of data, including 78 kton·years of additional fiducial volume data, has been newly analyzed. No candidates have been found for p→e+π0 and one candidate remains for p→μ+π0 in the conventional 22.5 kton fiducial volume and it is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background prediction. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: τ/B(p→e+π0)>2.4×1034 years and τ/B(p→μ+π0)>1.6×1034 years at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: The Japanese astrophysical payload MAXI (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image) has been monitor- ing the variable X-ray sky since August 15, 2009 from the International Space Station. With the 10 year’s unbiased survey, the nature of the largest stellar flares and the hosts have been gradually revealed. We recognized that the flares, which MAXI detected, are occurred from limited number of active stars repeatedly, and most, so called "active stars" are quiet in MAXI’s monitoring. It is notable that the most energetic flare source in the MAXI sample is the quadruple system GT Mus, which is located at 109.594 pc distance (Sasaki et al. 2020). We will review the MAXI monitoring of GT Mus. We also introduce the follow-up observation with NICER.

Abstract: We report multi-wavelength monitoring observations of an M-dwarf flare star AD Leonis with Seimei Telescope (6150--7930 {\AA}), SCAT (Spectroscopic Chuo-university Astronomical Telescope; 3700--7500 {\AA}), NICER (Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer; 0.2--12.0 keV), and collaborations of OISTER (Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research) program. Twelve flares are detected in total which include ten H$\alpha$, four X-ray, and four optical-continuum flares; one of them is a superflare with the total energy of $\sim$ 2.0$\times$10$^{33}$ erg. We found that (1) during the superflare, the H$\alpha$ emission line full width at 1/8 maximum dramatically increases to 14 {\AA} from 8 {\AA} in the low-resolution spectra (R$\sim$ 2000) accompanied with the large white-light flares, (2) some weak H$\alpha$/X-ray flares are not accompanied with white-light emissions, and (3) the non-flaring emissions show clear rotational modulations in X-ray and H$\alpha$ intensity in the same phase. To understand these observational features, one-dimensional hydrodynamic flare simulations are performed by using the RADYN code. As a result of simulations, we found the simulated H$\alpha$ line profiles with hard and high-energy non-thermal electron beams are consistent with that of the initial phase line profiles of the superflares, while those with more soft- and/or weak-energy beam are consistent with those in decay phases, indicating the changes in the energy fluxes injected to the lower atmosphere. Also, we found that the relation between optical continuum and H$\alpha$ intensity is nonlinear, which can be one cause of the non-white-light flares. The flare energy budget exhibits diversity in the observations and models, and more observations of stellar flares are necessary for constraining the occurrence of various emission line phenomena in stellar flares., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, Accepted for Publication in PASJ

Abstract: Summary Background & aims The associations between dietary magnesium intake and stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) incidences are inconsistent and not established in Asian. We aimed to determine the association between dietary magnesium intake and the risk of stroke and CHD in a Japanese population. Subjects/Methods We studied 85,293 Japanese subjects by questionnaire at baseline (age 45–74 years, without cardiovascular disease or cancer in 1995 and 1998 for Cohorts I and II, respectively). The participants were followed until the end of 2009 and 2010 in Cohorts I and II, respectively. Dietary magnesium intake was estimated from a self-administered 138-item food-frequency questionnaire. Results After 1,305,738 person-years of follow-up, 4110 strokes and 1283 cases of CHD were documented. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs, 95% confidence intervals, 95%CIs) of CHD for the fourth and fifth quintiles of dietary magnesium intake were 0.70 (0.50–0.99) and 0.66 (0.44–0.97) in men (P for trend = 0.036), respectively, and third quintile of dietary magnesium intake was 0.61 (0.39–0.96) in women (P for trend = 0.241), compared with the lowest quintile in men and women. We observed no decreased risks of incident stroke in men or women with higher dietary magnesium intakes. Conclusions Higher dietary magnesium intake was associated with a reduced risk of CHD in Japanese men.

Abstract: A finding between dietary pattern and cancer may provide visions beyond the assessment of individual foods or nutrients. We examined the influence of dietary pattern with colorectal cancer (CRC) among a Japanese population.A total of 93,062 subjects (43,591 men, 49,471 women) who participated in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study were followed from 1995-1998 to the end of 2012, during which 2482 cases of CRC (1514 men, 968 women) were newly identified. Dietary data was obtained from a validated food-frequency questionnaire between 1995 and 1998.Three dietary pattern was derived from principal components factor: prudent, westernized, and traditional pattern. After controlled for potential confounders, the prudent pattern showed a decreased association of CRC risk in men (HR for highest quintile vs lowest: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.72-1.00; P trend0.05), slightly more strongly with distal colon cancer (P trend0.05); but an increased risk of rectal cancer in women (P trend0.05). The westernized pattern showed a significant positive linear trend for colon (P trend0.05) and distal cancer (P trend0.05) in women. There was no apparent association of traditional Japanese dietary pattern on the overall or any specific sites risk of CRC.A prudent dietary pattern showed an inverse association with CRC risk in men, and a westernized pattern was related with a higher risk of colon and distal cancer in women.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy may reduce the re-intubation rate compared with conventional oxygen therapy. However, HFNC has not been sufficiently compared with conventional oxygen therapy with a heated humidifier, even though heated humidification is beneficial for facilitating airway clearance. METHODS: This study was a single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial. We randomized subjects with respiratory failure after extubation to either HFNC group or to a large-volume humidified nebulization-based nebulizer. The primary end point was the re-intubation rate within 7 d after extubation. RESULTS: We could not recruit enough subjects for the sample size we designed, therefore, we analyzed 69 subjects (HFNC group, 30 subjects; nebulizer group, 39 subjects). The re-intubation rate within 7 d was not significantly different between the HFNC and nebulizer groups (5/30 subjects [17%] and 6/39 subjects [15%], respectively; P > .99). P aO 2 /set F I O 2 at 24 h after extubation was also not significantly different between the respective groups (264 ± 105 mm Hg in the HFNC group vs 224 ± 53 mm Hg in the nebulizer group; P = .07). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with a large-volume nebulization-based humidifier, HFNC may not reduce the re-intubation rate within 7 d. However, because of insufficient statistical power, further studies are needed to reach a conclusion.

Abstract: Aim Accidental hypothermia in urban settings is associated with high mortality rates. However, the predictors of mortality remain under discussion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate prognostic factors and develop a prediction model in patients with accidental hypothermia in urban settings. Methods We retrospectively reviewed medical records in patients with hypothermia brought to our hospital by ambulance in a 7‐year study period. Patients’ records of survival discharge or in‐hospital death and clinical data were collected from medical records. We analyzed factors to predict in‐hospital death using multiple logistic regression analysis. Recursive partitioning analysis was used to construct a prediction model using predictors from multiple logistic regression analysis. Results In the study period, 192 patients were included in this study. Of them, 154 patients were discharged alive and 38 patients died. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that in‐hospital death was related to Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, prothrombin time – international normalized ratio (PT‐INR) value, and fibrin degradation product (FDP). Recursive partitioning analysis revealed that patients with accidental hypothermia could be divided into four groups: very high risk (FDP ≥ 14 µg/mL, PT‐INR ≥ 1.4), high risk (FDP ≥ 14 µg/mL, PT‐INR, Prediction model constructed by recursive partitioning analysis grouping high risk in patients with accidental hypothermia. Abstract: We report that the RS CVn-type star GT Mus (HR 4492, HD 101379 + HD 101380) was the most active star in the X-ray sky in the last decade in terms of the scale of recurrent energetic flares. We detected 11 flares from GT Mus in 8 yr of observations with Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) from 2009 August to 2017 August. The detected flare peak luminosities were 1-4 $\times$ 10$^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the 2.0-20.0 keV band for its distance of 109.6 pc. Our timing analysis showed long durations ($\tau_{\rm r} + \tau_{\rm d}$) of 2-6 days with long decay times ($\tau_{\rm d}$) of 1-4 days. The released energies during the decay phases of the flares in the 0.1-100 keV band ranged 1-11 $\times$ 10$^{38}$ erg, which are at the upper end of the observed stellar flare. The released energies during whole duration time ranged 2-13 $\times$ 10$^{38}$ erg in the same band. We carried out X-ray follow-up observations for one of the 11 flares with Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) on 2017 July 18 and found that the flare cooled quasi-statically. On the basis of a quasi-static cooling model, the flare loop length is derived to be 4 $\times$ 10$^{12}$ cm (or 60 R$_{\odot}$). The electron density is derived to be 1 $\times$ 10$^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$, which is consistent with the typical value of solar and stellar flares (10$^{10-13}$ cm$^{-3}$). The ratio of the cooling timescales between radiative cooling ($\tau_{\rm rad}$) and conductive cooling ($\tau_{\rm cond}$) is estimated to be $\tau_{\rm rad}$ $\sim$ 0.1$\tau_{\rm cond}$ from the temperature; thus radiative cooling was dominant in this flare., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, Published for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (23-Mar-2021)

Abstract: Pillared-graphene is one of nanocarbon hybrids. It consists of graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes (CNTs); the latter are bonded vertically to the former. In order to investigate the hardness of pillared-graphene, indentation simulations are performed using a molecular dynamics method. It is revealed that the hardness of pillared-graphene increases with increasing the diameter of the CNTs, whereas it decreases with increasing the distance between CNTs or temperature. Such tendencies can be understood by considering the deformations of graphene and CNTs individually.

Abstract: Aim This research aimed to propose a logistic regression model for Japanese blunt trauma victims. Methods We tested whether the logistic regression model previously created from data registered in the Japan Trauma Data Bank between 2005 and 2008 is still valid for the data from the same data bank between 2009 and 2013. Additionally, we analyzed whether the model would be highly accurate even when its coefficients were rounded off to two decimal places. Results The model was proved to be highly accurate (94.56%) in the recent data (2009–2013). We also showed that the model remains valid without respiratory rate data and the simplified model would maintain high accuracy. Conclusion We propose the equation of survival prediction of blunt trauma victims in Japan to be Ps = 1/(1+e−b), where b = −0.76 + 1.03 × Revised Trauma Score − 0.07 × Injury Severity Score − 0.04 × age.

Abstract: The ability to predict the dispersion of gases is highly important for the environmental assessment of cities and industrial areas, where gaseous emissions have become a matter of global concern. Our study aims to understand the extent to which theoretical models of gaseous dispersion make accurate predictions when compared to actual measurements from real-world geographical areas and to investigate its limitations. With this in mind, we conducted a field study on gas dispersion in the urban area of Atsugi city in Japan. The release point for the gas was set on the rooftop of a building. The sampling points were located on the ground. We compared the distribution of dispersed gases in terms of concentration obtained from the field measurements with our calculations based on the plume model. Both sets of results were in good agreement with each other, except when there was atmospheric instability in an area where dispersion was measured. Meteorological parameters of wind direction fluctuation and vertical wind profile were studied to further understand the areas of atmospheric instability.

Abstract: Background Management of trauma involves long-term bed rest even when muscle strength in the lower extremities is preserved. Prolonged bed rest reduces muscle mass and causes muscle atrophy. A recent study reported the efficacy of rehabilitation using electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) for muscle strength maintenance in intensive care unit patients with disturbance of consciousness. However, despite the expected benefits of EMS in maintaining muscle strength, little is known about its efficacy in trauma patients. Methods/design A single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial of 40 patients with pelvic fracture to test the effectiveness of 14 days of EMS. The primary outcome will be change in cross-sectional area of the thigh muscle between pre and post intervention, as measured on computed tomography images. We will analyze the primary endpoint by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and analyze the secondary endpoints in an exploratory manner. Conclusion If our hypothesis is confirmed, this study will provide evidence that the use of EMS can be effective in preventing muscle atrophy. Abstract: Aims Coping strategies may be significantly associated with health outcomes. This is the first study to investigate the association between baseline coping strategies and cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and mortality in a general population cohort. Methods and results The Japan Public Health Center-based prospective Study asked questions on coping in its third follow-up survey (2000–04). Analyses on CVD incidence and mortality included 57 017 subjects aged 50–79 without a history of CVD and who provided complete answers on approach- and avoidance-oriented coping behaviours and strategies. Cox regression models, adjusted for confounders, were used to determine hazard ratios (HRs) according to coping style. Mean follow-up time was 7.9 years for incidence and 8.0 years for mortality. The premorbid use of an approach-oriented coping strategy was inversely associated with incidence of stroke (HR = 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73–1.00) and CVD mortality (HR = 0.74; 95% CI, 0.55–0.99). Stroke subtype analyses revealed an inverse association between the approach-oriented coping strategy and incidence of ischaemic stroke (HR = 0.79; 95% CI, 0.64–0.98) and a positive association between the combined coping strategy and incidence of intra-parenchymal haemorrhage (HR = 2.03; 95% CI, 1.01–4.10). Utilizing an avoidance coping strategy was associated with increased mortality from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) only in hypertensive individuals (HR = 3.46; 95% CI, 1.07–11.18). The coping behaviours fantasizing and positive reappraisal were associated with increased risk of CVD incidence (HR = 1.24; 95% CI, 1.03–1.50) and reduced risk of IHD mortality (HR = 0.63; 95% CI, 0.40–0.99), respectively. Conclusion An approach-oriented coping strategy, i.e. proactively dealing with sources of stress, may be associated with significantly reduced stroke incidence and CVD mortality in a Japanese population-based cohort.

Abstract: Here we propose a novel coating technique with low-speed dip-coating for preparing metal oxide thin films from organic-additive-free aqueous solutions, where the film formation on the substrate is achieved via an evaporation-driven deposition during dip-coating of extremely low substrate withdrawal speeds below 1.0 cm min−1 in a thermostatic oven at 25–60 °C. Transparent, crack-free SnO2 and TiO2 precursor films were obtained from SnCl4 and TiOSO4 aqueous solutions, respectively, by low-speed dip-coating. The precursor films thus obtained were crystallized to SnO2 and TiO2 films by the heat treatment at 700 °C for 10 min in air.

Abstract: The morphology of corannulene molecules encapsulated in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is addressed using atomistic simulations. Firstly, dynamic simulation (DS) of encapsulation of corannulene molecules into a SWCNT is performed using a molecular dynamics (MD) method. It is revealed that corannulene molecules encapsulated in a SWCNT tend to form concave-concave (CC) dimers, and these dimers make stacks tilting against the SWCNT axis or take an arrangement such that their convex surfaces face the inner wall of the SWCNT. This tendency arises from the fact that the van der Waals interactions between the convex surfaces of the corannulene molecules and the inner wall of the SWCNT dominate in their dynamic encapsulation into the SWCNT, and CC dimers are favored based on the energetics. Next, conjugate gradient (CG) energy minimizations starting from two kinds of initial arrangement of corannulene molecules in a SWCNT, concave-convex (CV) and CC/convex-convex (VV) arrangements, are performed. The CG energy minimizations confirm the result of DS that CC dimers are the structural motif of corannulene molecules in a SWCNT. From the final configurations of both the simulations, the tilt angles and intermolecular distances of the stacked molecules are calculated. With increasing the SWCNT diameter, the tilt angles decrease while the intermolecular distances remain almost constant. The tilt angles of the stacked corannulene molecules are approximately expressed by a semi-analytical formula which is derived on the basis of a geometrical constraint condition.
