Most nations are experiencing rapid urbanization. By 2050, it is estimated that almost 70% of the world’s population will reside in urban areas. Building green cities, smart cities, or more sustainable cities is the top priority policies for many countries, which requires a more advanced understanding of the urban’s ecological and social systems. This study aims to examine the growth trajectory, most influential documents, intellectual and conceptual structure of the literature regarding urban environment and human health research. Bibliometric analysis was performed using 424 validated scientific works related to the topic published during 1997- 2023. The review showed that this field’s knowledge grew exponentially during the last two decades. For example, the five most frequently used keywords found are “urban” (63 occurrences), “health” (47 occurrences), “impact” (44 occurrences), “urban population” (40 occurrences), “mortality” (36 occurrences), while the number of publication increased from 3 in 1990 to 58 in 2018. The majority of them are contributed by scholars from the world’s developed countries or large economies such as the United States (92 documents), China (70 documents), England (39 documents), and Germany (25 documents). We reasoned that scientific culture, research spending, and collaboration are the main causes of the growth in knowledge and disparity in scientific productivity among institutes and/or nations. In addition, based on the co-citation analysis, three major research lines were identified. The findings of this study offer many key implications for devising the urban policies that further promote knowledge creation and sharing while closing gaps in academic publishing in the long run.

This paper introduces an advanced method that integrates contingent valuation and machine learning (CVML) to estimate residents’ demand for mitigating environmental pollutions and climate change. To be precise, CVML is an innovative hybrid machine-learning model, and it can leverage a limited amount of survey data for prediction and data enrichment purposes. The model comprises of two interconnected modules: Module I, an unsupervised learning algorithm, and Module II, a supervised learning algorithm. Module I is responsible for clustering the data (x^sur) into groups based on common characteristics, thereby grouping the corresponding dependent variable (y^sur) values as well. Take a survey on the topic of air pollution in Hanoi in 2019 as an example, we find that CVML can predict households’ willingness– to– pay for polluted air mitigation at a high degree of accuracy (i.e., over 90%). This finding suggests that CVML is a powerful and practical method that would be potentially widely applied in fields of environmental economics and sustainability science in years to come.

This study investigates Vietnamese citizens’ participation in plastic waste treatment and environment improvement. We developed and adopted a novel method (CVMM) that integrates the contingent valuation, mindsponge, and mindspongeconomics – a new type of economics to estimate and reasonate households’ financial contribution for improved plastic waste treatment in North Vietnam. CVMM analytics were used to explore 1103 observations surveyed during 2022-2023 in the North Vietnam. The empirical findings suggest that public-private partnership should be further expanded and/or strengthen to improve finance while stronger environment policy associated with environmental education should be taken to improve environmental literacy and build environmental culture, which ultimately help address plastic waste and environmental issues in the long run.

Bài viết này trình bày tổng quan về các vấn đề môi trường và tài nguyên trong hoạt động khai thác và chế biến tại hai công ty Nhôm TKV Lâm Đồng và TKV Đắc Nông. Trên cơ sở đó đưa ra mô hình kinh tế tuần hoàn trong hoạt động khai thác và chế biến bauxite ở các tỉnh vùng Tây Nguyên. Bằng các số liệu cụ thể từ việc khai thác và chế biến quặng bauxite của hai công ty trên, bài viết đã đánh giá các lợi ích kinh tế xã hội và môi trường, cũng như đề xuất các giải pháp cụ thể để triển khai có hiệu quả mô hình kinh tế tuần hoàn cho hoạt động khai thác và chế biến bauxite tại Tây Nguyên.

Patients with serious illnesses or injuries may decide to quit their medical treatment if they think paying the fees will put their families into destitution. Without treatment, it is likely that fatal outcomes will soon follow. We call this phenomenon “near-suicide”. This study attempted to explore this phenomenon by examining how the seriousness of the patient’s illness or injury and the subjective evaluation of the patient’s and family’s financial situation after paying treatment fees affect the final decision on the treatment process. Bayesian Mindsponge Framework (BMF) analytics were employed to analyze a dataset of 1042 Vietnamese patients. We found that the more serious the illnesses or injuries of patients were, the more likely they were to choose to quit treatment if they perceived that paying the treatment fees heavily affected their families’ financial status. Particularly, only one in four patients with the most serious health issues who thought that continuing the treatment would push themselves and their families into destitution would decide to continue the treatment. Considering the information-filtering mechanism using subjective cost–benefit judgments, these patients likely chose the financial well-being and future of their family members over their individual suffering and inevitable death. Our study also demonstrates that mindsponge-based reasoning and BMF analytics can be effective in designing and processing health data for studying extreme psychosocial phenomena. Moreover, we suggest that policymakers implement and adjust their policies (e.g., health insurance) following scientific evidence to mitigate patients’ likelihood of making “near-suicide” decisions and improve social equality in the healthcare system.

Industrialization and consumerism have aroused growing concern about energy depletion, necessitating a transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy sources. To this end, every segment of the population should shoulder responsibility for mitigating environmental problems, especially the young generation. This study contributes to the literature on environment management and development by improving the understanding of young adults’ intention to acquire energy conservation knowledge and its correlation with their demographics and environmental concerns. We employed a systematic randomized sampling method and conducted a large-scale online survey with the participation of 1454 students in 48 different universities in Vietnam. The first results show that young adults had significant environmental concerns, yet more efforts are demanded to turn perceptions into actions or contributions. Almost 83% expressed a desire for energy-saving knowledge, and roughly 50% are willing to take an energy course. We found that the young adults' perception and high income were positively associated with their decision on energy course enrolment. Demographically, women were more likely to take energy-saving courses, and those living urban areas had a higher desire for knowledge enhancement. These findings have numerous policy implications for facilitating energy transformation based on improved environmental education programs for sustainable development in Vietnam and beyond.

The Covid-19 crisis was remarkable because no global recession model could predict or provide early notice of when the coronavirus pandemic would happen and damage the global economy. Resilience to financial shocks is crucial for households as future crises like Covid-19 are inevitable. Therefore, the current study aims to the effects of financial literacy and accessibility to financial information on the financial resilience of Vietnamese households through the lens of an information-processing perspective. The Bayesian Mindsponge Framework (BMF) analytics was employed on a dataset of 839 samples for the investigation. We found that households of respondents with better financial knowledge and investment skills are less likely to be financially affected during the peak of the Covid-19 crisis, but the effect of investment skills is weakly reliable. Accessibility to financial information through informal sources (having a household member working in the financial sector) and formal sources (participating in a financial course) is positively associated with the respondents’ financial knowledge and investment skills. This finding suggests that the spillover effect of financial knowledge and skills among residents exists, leading to better resilience toward financial shocks. However, if the financial information is inaccurate, it might lead to misinformation, false beliefs, and poor economic decisions on a large scale.

According to many recently published reports and indisputably evidence, environmental pollution and climate change are becoming increasingly serious. Regrettably, this is because humans underestimate the value of nature, and particularly violate the asymmetry principle of nature and humans. To be specific, humans are creating an eco-deficit culture with one’s environmental footprints/impacts far surpass nature’s resilience capacity. In short, in this short note, I just initially introduce and advocate two new concepts/metrics: environmental social efficiency and ecosurplus index. We can use them for measuring the degree of realization of humans’ thoughts for environmental goals, evaluating the ecosurplus culture-based society, and building ecosurplus culture/high value culture for sustainable development in a long run. This is a further step to realize humans’ ambitious objectives for tackling environmental pollution and climate change. And more importantly, we will continue to develop these concepts/metrics till they are complete in years to come.

I propose and adopt the environmental social efficiency framework that uses mindspongeEdu, MindspongeTech, MindspongeAI to achieve our environment-related goals/objectives for tackling climate change and environmental problems that humans face today.

We propose and adopt an energy saving conceptual framework which contains three parts: the energy conversion system, the socio-ecological system, and global environmental changes. The framework shapes our research in several ways. First, it recognises the role of young people (students) as an active player in energy consumption and carbon emissions. In years to come, they will be major decision-makers in energy use; hence, their choice of action would have a long-term effect. For example, they might decide to use energy-efficient appliances in their houses, or as a business owner, they might opt for eco-friendly office design and issue ‘green office’ guideline. If these were the case, energy consumption would be reduced significantly. For a problem that requires such complicated and time-consuming efforts as global warming to be addressed, the participation of young people would be the key to success. This enables us to target young people and investigate their responses to global environmental issues in general and climate change-related policies in particular. Second, it draws the attention to the role of education in raising environmental awareness which potentially leads to pro-environmental behaviours, especially of young people, in the long term (Van Khuc, 2022a, 2022b, 2022d). Based on these characteristics, the framework also supports the construction of young people decision models in the following sections.

Macroeconomics is a branch of economics that studies the overall performance, structure, behavior, and decision-making of an economy. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is chosen as the metric for measuring the national economy. Although GDP is one of the most important metrics, its use has been a source of controversy among many economists for many years. As humanity enters the information age, more evidence suggests that it is time to reconsider this metric for assessing a country’s wealth and/or development level.

Our world is changing rapidly as a result of the information explosion, and current economics cannot explain the world development with a linear equation based optimization, so it is time for economists to rethink and apply mindspongecon for further development. And, as suggested by Khuc, Q.V. (2022), who developed mindspongecon, economists should learn more from nature because it is wonderful and contains valuable information. Mindspongecon will continue to evolve in the coming years in order to serve and build a better world for our environment and children.

Nghiên cứu này đánh giá mức độ nhận thức của người dân của khu vực miền Bắc Việt Nam về tình trạng ô nhiễm rác thải sinh hoạt (RTSH), sự sẵn lòng chi trả cho việc xử lý RTSH trong cả khu vực thành thị và nông thôn. Trong bối cảnh của đại dịch Covid-19, nhóm nghiên cứu đã kết hợp phương pháp phỏng vấn trực tiếp và online để khảo sát 502 hộ gia đình tại 8 tỉnh/thành phố ở khu vực miền Bắc Việt Nam. Kết quả cho thấy 71,5% người được khảo sát đã nhận thức được vấn đề ô nhiễm môi trường do rác thải sinh hoạt gây ra, 83,07% người dân được khảo sát sẵn sàng chi trả tự nguyện (WTP) cho các hoạt động xử lý rác thải sinh hoạt tại khu vực sinh sống với giá trị trung bình được ước tính từ mô hình dao động từ 154.000VND đến 155.000VND đồng/tháng/hộ gia đình. Kết quả phân tích mô hình cho thấy người dân khu vực nông thôn có xu hướng sẵn sàng chi trả tự nguyện cho quỹ xử lý rác thải cao hơn người dân sống ở thành thị. Bên cạnh đó, những công dân có trình độ học vấn, nhận thức cao thì sẵn sàng chi trả hơn, những người phụ nữ chăm lo công việc nội trợ trong gia đình sẽ quan tâm hơn đến vấn đề xử lý rác thải sinh hoạt và sẵn sàng chi trả cho vấn đề này. Kết quả nghiên cứu này gợi mở một số giải pháp chính sách nhằm giảm thiểu ô nhiễm rác thải, thúc đẩy hợp tác công tư trong lĩnh vực quản lý và bảo vệ môi trường ở Việt Nam trong thời gian tới.

As one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, Vietnam is tackling environmental pollution, particularly plastic waste. According to a recently published report, the country is one of the world’s top five marine polluters of plastic waste. This study contributes to the literature and practical solutions by better understanding households’ perceptions, behaviours, and motivations for sorting waste, contributing to the environmental fund and relocating. The questionnaire-based interview method was used to collect information from 730 households in 25 provinces in Vietnam during February 2022. Statistical descriptive method and Bayesian regression model coupled with mindsponge mechanism were employed to explore and analyse the data. The findings show that people’s strategies and responses to plastic waste pollution vary: 38.63% of respondents have been sorting waste at home, 74.25% agreed to contribute to the environmental fund, and 23.56% plan to relocate to find a better living place. The households’ strategies and intentions are driven by many structural and contextual factors such as age, income, care about the environment, and the perceived effect of polluted waste. More importantly, communication is a robust variable in sorting waste decisions, which suggests that better communication would help increase people’s awareness and real actions in reducing plastic waste and ultimately improving the environment. The findings of our study will benefit the ongoing green economy, circular economy, and green growth transition toward more sustainable development, particular in developing and fast population growing nations.
