Abstract

MetaGenePipe (MGP) is an efficient, flexible, portable, and scalable metagenomics pipeline that uses performant bioinformatics software suites and genomic databases to create an accurate taxonomic and functional characterization of the prokaryotic fraction of sequenced microbiomes. Written in the Workflow Definition Language (WDL), MGP produces output that can be explored and interpreted directly, or can be used for downstream analysis. MGP is a pipeline-development best practice tool that uses Singularity for containerization and includes a setup script that downloads the necessary databases for setup. The source code for MGP is freely available and distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.

34. Video-Games: Do They Require General Intelligence?

Abstract

Here we test if playing video-games require intelligence. Twenty-seven university undergraduate students were trained on three games from Big Brain Academy (Wii): Calculus, Backward Memory and Train. Participants did not have any previous experience with these games. General intelligence was measured by five ability tests before the training session. Training comprised 10 blocks of trials (10 trials per block). Ackerman's (Ackerman, P. L. (1988). Individual differences and skill acquisition. In P. L. Ackerman, R. J. Sernberg, & R. Glaser (Eds.), "Learning and individual differences: Advances in theory and practice" (pp. 165-217). New York: W.H. Freeman and Company) theory of skill learning was used as a framework for the present study. Results show that playing the Train game increases the correlation with general intelligence across blocks of trials. This is not the case for Calculus and Backward Memory. These findings suggest strategies for designing video-games presumably appropriate to stimulate our core cognitive abilities. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)

35. Working Memory and Intelligence Are Highly Related Constructs, but Why?

Abstract

Working memory and the general factor of intelligence (g) are highly related constructs. However, we still don't know why. Some models support the central role of simple short-term storage, whereas others appeal to executive functions like the control of attention. Nevertheless, the available empirical evidence does not suffice to get an answer, presumably because relevant measures are frequently considered in isolation. To overcome this problem, here we consider concurrently simple short-term storage, mental speed, updating, and the control of attention along with working memory and intelligence measures, across three separate studies. Several diverse measures are administered to a total of 661 participants. The findings are consistent with the view that simple short-term storage largely accounts for the relationship between working memory and intelligence. Mental speed, updating, and the control of attention are not consistently related to working memory, and they are not genuinely associated with intelligence once the short-term storage component is removed. Abstract

Background and aims: Development of management measures of invasive non-native species is priority in protected areas, particularly when actions are taken at early stages of invasion since it facilitates the recovery of natural systems. Here, we present a methodology to control an invasive evergreen vine, Hedera helix (Araliaceae). M&M: The proposal includes volunteers, which are within a research and outreach project from Universidad Nacional Comahue Bariloche in collaboration with Administración de Parques Nacionales. We removed manually the vine with garden tools, composted it in waste plastic bags in site and kept track of natural regeneration of the native forest. Results: Since 2019, 47 volunteers got involved and removed 870 kg of plant material (humid weight) from five of the six sites. Two of the five sites are at the stage of monitoring native species. Conclusions: The participation of volunteers resulted effective for plant manual removal, as the vine from invasion sites is being controlled. In this way, we are achieving successful results with minimum environmental negative impacts, at least in the plant community, as evidenced by the recolonization of the sites by native plant species and by the full removal of the ivy from intervened sites. In particular, this procedure allows to create awareness of the problem of biological invasions in the community and in future university graduates. It also reinforces inter institutional relationships linking academia with conservation management agencies, a connection sometimes difficult to achieve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The main aim of this international consensus document on obstructive sleep apnea is to provide guidelines based on a critical analysis of the latest literature to help health professionals make the best decisions in the care of adult patients with this disease. The expert working group was formed primarily of 17 scientific societies and 56 specialists from a wide geographical area (including the participation of 4 international societies), an expert in methodology, and a document a list from the Iberoamerican Cochrane Center. The document consists of a main section containing the most significant innovations and a series of online manuscripts that report the systematic literature searches performed for each section of the international consensus document. This document does not discuss pediatric patients or the management of patients receiving chronic non-invasive mechanical ventilation (these topics will be addressed in separate consensus documents).
