11. Hyperactive and Hypoactive Delirium: What we know so Far

Abstract

Delirium is a common and severe neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by acute changes in attention, cognition, and consciousness. It can present in different clinical forms, including hyperactive and hypoactive delirium. Hyperactive delirium is characterized by increased psychomotor activity, agitation, and disruptive behavior, while hypoactive delirium is characterized by reduced psychomotor activity, somnolence, and decreased responsiveness. The diagnosis of hyperactive and hypoactive delirium involves a comprehensive evaluation of medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests to identify underlying causes and exclude other conditions. Prompt recognition and accurate diagnosis are crucial for appropriate management and treatment. The management of hyperactive and hypoactive delirium aims at addressing the underlying etiology, ensuring patient safety, and alleviating distressing symptoms. Treatment strategies include the optimization of medical conditions, discontinuation or adjustment of offending medications, and supportive care. Pharmacological interventions, such as the use of sedative medications for hyperactive delirium or stimulant agents for hypoactive delirium, may be considered when necessary. Multidisciplinary collaboration involving healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and therapists, is essential for the comprehensive care of patients with hyperactive and hypoactive delirium. In conclusion, hyperactive and hypoactive delirium are distinct clinical manifestations of an acute confusional state. Their identification, diagnosis, and management require a multidimensional approach to address the underlying causes and alleviate symptoms. Early recognition and appropriate interventions are crucial for improving patient outcomes and enhancing their overall well-being.

Abstract

Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado se centra en aquellas Cantigas de Santa María cuya temática se relaciona con la vida y el reinado de Alfonso X. Su estudio se acompaña de una breve biografía de Alfonso X de Castilla y un comentario conciso de la faceta escritora de este monarca, que ofrecen un contexto general. También, se incluye un breve comentario sobre qué son las Cantigas de Santa María, que sirve como preludio al análisis de las temáticas de esta obra. Los temas de las cantigas abordados en este trabajo hacen referencia a la propia figura del Rey Sabio, poniendo especial relevancia en una cantiga donde se alude a una serie de hechos importantes de la vida de Alfonso X, de la Reconquista, centrándose en los benimerines y nazaríes, la familia real y las advocaciones marianas a las que Alfonso X tenía especial devoción como fue el caso de la Virgen de los Reyes., This Final Degree Project focuses on the Cantigas de Santa María whose theme is related to the life and reign of Alfonso X. Its study is accompanied by a brief biography of Alfonso X of Castilla and a concise commentary on the writing facet of this monarch, which offer a general context. Also, a brief comment is included about what the Cantigas de Santa María are, which serves as a prelude to the analysis of the themes of this work. These themes of the cantigas dealt with in this work refer to the figure of the Wise King himself, putting special relevance in a cantiga where the text alludes to a series of important events in the life of Alfonso X, of the Reconquest, focusing on the Benimerines and Nasrids, the Royal Family and the Marian dedications to which Alfonso X had special devotion, as was the case of the Virgen de los Reyes., Grado en Historia

26. The quantitative lung index: the left lung.

Abstract

We have previously described a gestational age-independent sonographic parameter to assess fetal lung growth in the right lung (right quantitative lung index, or QLI-R). The purpose of this study was to develop a similar sonographic parameter to assess the growth of the left lung in the fetus, independent of gestational age, or QLI-L. A new index, the QLI-L was derived using published formulas for the head circumference (HC) and the area of the base of the left lung (LA), with the corresponding percentiles. Left lung growth can be expressed using the following formula: QLI − L = LA L ( HC 12 ) 2 . The 50th percentile of the QLI-L remained approximately constant at 1.0 for the GA between 16-32 weeks. A small left lung (<1st percentile) was defined as a QLI-L < 0.5. Fetal left lung growth can be adequately described independent of gestational age using the QLI-L. Further experience is needed to assess the clinical accuracy of the QLI-L in characterizing fetal left lung growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
