Abstract

Streamflow forecasting is key to effectively managing water resources and preparing for the occurrence of natural calamities being exacerbated by climate change. Here we use the concept of fast and slow flow components to create a new mass-conserving Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network model. It uses hydrometeorological time series and catchment attributes to predict daily river discharges. Preliminary results evidence improvement in skills for different scores compared to the recent literature.

Abstract

This paper introduces the use of tailored variational forms for variational quantum eigensolver that have properties of representing certain constraints on the search domain of a linear constrained quadratic binary optimization problem solution. Four constraints that usually appear in several optimization problems are modeled. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is that the number of parameters on the variational form remain constant and depend on the number of variables that appear on the constraints. Moreover, this variational form always produces feasible solutions for the represented constraints differing from penalization techniques commonly used to translate constrained problems into unconstrained one. The methodology is implemented in a real quantum computer for two known optimization problems: the Facility Location Problem and the Set Packing Problem. The results obtained for this two problems with VQE using 2-Local variational form and a general QAOA implementation are compared, and indicate that less quantum gates and parameters were used, leading to a faster convergence.

Abstract

This paper introduces a new optimization model that integrates the multi-port stowage planning problem with the container relocation problem. This problem is formulated as a binary mathematical programming model that must find the containers' move sequence so that the number of relocations during the whole journey of a ship, as well as the associated port yards is minimized. Modeling by binary variables to represent the cargo status in a ship and yards makes the problem very complex to be solved by exact methods. To the best of our knowledge, this integrated model has not been developed yet as that such problems are always addressed in a partitioned or hierarchical way. A demonstration of the benefits of an integrated approach is given. The model is solved in two different commercial solvers and the results for randomly generated instances are presented and compared to the hierarchical approach. Two heuristics approaches are proposed to quickly generate feasible solutions for warm-starting the model. Extensive computational tests are performed and the results indicate that the solution approaches can reach optimal solutions for small sized instances and good quality solutions on real-scale based instances within reasonable computation time. This is a promising model to support decisions in these problems in an integrated way.

28. Reactions to Diversity Training: An International Comparison

Abstract

As the workplace becomes more diverse and global in nature, organizations are implementing diversity training to manage this trend. However, previous research has rarely explored empirically employees' perceptions toward diversity training in different cultures. The study presented here examined reactions to a diversity training program conducted by a large multinational corporation in eight countries spanning the individualistic-collectivistic continuum. Results showed that while trainee culture influenced perceptions of diversity training, trainee job level and trainer culture moderated this relationship. Furthermore, trainer culture and gender interacted to influence perceptions of training utility and trainer effectiveness. Implications for instituting corporatewide diversity training on an international scale are considered.

Abstract

Employees (124 whites, 36 people of color) read a diversity course description and completed a survey. A traditional title and broad focus received the most favorable responses. Men reacted more negatively than women, especially to a narrow focus and being assigned to the course for remedial purposes. The framing of diversity training thus affected pretraining attitudes. Abstract

This study identifies stigma as a potential precursor to self-fulfilling prophecies in training interactions. Expectations held by leaders often result in actions that elicit expectancy-confirming behaviors from their subordinates. The results of the present study suggest that trainee weight (manipulated with a photograph depicting the trainee as either obese or average weight for height) influenced female trainer expectations and evaluations of the training and trainee. Furthermore, the results suggest that negative expectations held by trainers were related to trainee evaluations of the training and the trainer and, for less flexible trainers, to decrements in trainee performance on the trained task. Overall, the results suggest that trainer expectations can be influenced by stereotypes held about trainee characteristics, thus undermining training effectiveness. 50. Practice variability and transfer of training: the role of self-efficacy generality

Abstract

Practice variability has been shown to enhance transfer of training. The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of self-efficacy generality as a motivational mechanism in explaining the relationship between practice variability and transfer. Undergraduate students (N = 82) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 training conditions (constant or variable) for a computer decision-making task. Measures of self-efficacy (intensity and generality) and transfer (near and far) were assessed. The results provided support for some of the hypothesized relationships. Specifically, practice variability led to increased self-efficacy generality. Both self-efficacy intensity and generality influenced far transfer performance, although only self-efficacy generality served as a mediator between practice variability and far transfer.
