4. Evaluation of flow models and pollutant retention isotherms for their application to rain garden bioretention

Abstract

The primary aims of this research was firstly to develop a computer modelling tool which could predict pollution retention in a rain garden and secondly to use the model and additional experiments to examine various aspects of rain garden design with respect to pollutant retention. Initially, the behaviour of all contaminants in urban runoff was examined including their retention and possible modelling methods. Heavy metals were then identified as the main focus of this project as this choice was the most beneficial addition to current research. The main factors affecting their retention were found to be macropore flow, pore water velocity, soil moisture content and soil characteristics and the primary method of modelling capture was identified as a sorption isotherm. Thus a dual-permeability heavy metal sorption model was developed; this was based on an intensive literature review of current best practice in both hydrological modelling and pollutant retention fields with respect to rain garden devices. The kinematic wave equation was chosen to model water movement in both the matrix and macropore regions as this provided a simpler alternative to more complex equations while still maintaining good accuracy. With regards to the modelling of heavy metal retention three isotherms were chosen: the linear, Langmuir and Freundlich equations as these were found from previous research to be the most accurate. These isotherms were incorporated into a one dimensional advection-dispersion-adsorption equation in order to model both transport and retention together. This model was tested against the appropriate literature and accurate comparisons were obtained thus validating it. Column experiments were designed to both provide a unique contribution to rain garden research and further validate the model. This was achieved by analysing past experiments and identifying an area where research is lacking; this area was the effect of macropore flow on heavy metal retention in rain garden systems under typical English climatic conditions. The findings of these experiments indicated that although macropore flow did not impact the hydraulic performance of the columns, retention of the most mobile of heavy metals, copper, was decreased slightly in one case. The overall retention of the columns was still high however at a value in excess of 99% for copper, lead and zinc. The results of the experiments were also used to further validate the model. The model was then applied to the development of a rain garden device for a planned roundabout in Kent, U.K. Preliminary design considered an upper root zone layer with organic soil and a sandy storage sublayer each 30 cm thick, for a rain garden area of 5 and 10% the size of the contributing impervious surface. Two scenarios were examined; the accumulation and movement of metals without macropores and the possibility of groundwater contamination due to preferential flow. It was shown that levels of lead can build up in the upper layers of the system, but only constituted a health hazard after 10 years. Simulations showed that copper was successfully retained (no significant concentrations below 50 cm of rain garden soil depth). Finally given concerns of preferential flow bypassing sustainable drainage systems, macropore flow was examined; results indicated that due to site conditions it was not a threat to groundwater at this location for the time frame considered. These actions successfully completed the objectives of this project and it was deemed successful.

Abstract

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) (which are also known as Sustainable Drainage Systems, or SuDS) offer a new approach to managing water. Whether they are focused on drought, pollution, or flood risk, they alter the places where communities live, work, or enjoy themselves. Communities therefore should have the right to input to their design in their area. This guide has been developed to offer ideas for water practitioners to enhance community engagement related to NBS. It is written by researchers at the Universities of Sheffield and Hull, with input from a diverse range of practitioners. It includes sections on why to do community engagement and advice relating to five different stages of community engagement. Case studies about how others have approached community engagement in NBS are found in an Appendix.

Abstract

Sand dams are impermeable water harvesting structures built to collect and store water within the volume of sediments transported by ephemeral rivers. The artificial sandy aquifer created by the sand dam reduces evaporation losses relative to surface water storage in traditional dams. Recent years have seen a renaissance of studies on sand dams as an effective water scarcity adaptation strategy for drylands. However, many aspects of their functioning and effectiveness are still unclear. Literature reviews have pointed to a range of research gaps that need further scientific attention, such as river corridors and network dynamics, watershed-scale impacts, and interaction with social dynamics. However, the scattered and partially incomplete information across the different reviews would benefit from an integrated framework for directing future research efforts. This paper is a collaborative effort of different research groups active on sand dams and stems from the need to channel future research efforts on this topic in a thorough and coherent way. We synthesize the pivotal research gaps of a) unclear definition of “functioning” sand dams, b) lack of methodologies for watershed-scale analysis, c) neglect of social aspects in sand dam research, and d) underreported impacts of sand dams. The Lancet Countdown is an international collaboration established to provide an independent, global monitoring system dedicated to tracking the emerging health profile of the changing climate. The 2020 report presents 43 indicators across five sections: climate change impacts, exposures, and vulnerabilities; adaptation, planning, and resilience for health; mitigation actions and health co-benefits; economics and finance; and public and political engagement. This report represents the findings and consensus of the 35 leading academic institutions and UN agencies that make up The Lancet Countdown, and draws on the expertise of climate scientists, geographers, engineers, experts in energy, food, and transport, economists, social, and political scientists, data scientists, public health professionals, and doctors.

Abstract

We seek to advance a critical and relational concept of urban water security that theorizes urban processes in relation to the hydro-social dynamics that produce experiences of water securities and insecurities at multiple scales. Our intention is to set out an analytical framework that both examines the social relations that underpin water insecurity and goes beyond the urban as merely the context in which water provision and risk take place. We seek to mobilize this concept to envision meaningful water policies and hydro-social practices to enhance social equity and empowerment for urban communities.

Abstract

This paper was prepared for the `Postmodernism and Spirituality' conference held at the University of Central Lancashire in April this year, and Ruth Quinn has now reworked the piece in the light of Clive Barker's article in NTQ 69, `In Search of the Lost Mode: Improvisation and All that Jazz'. Ruth Quinn first studied Theology at Oxford, but has been teaching Drama and Theatre Studies for eleven years, currently at the University of Central Lancashire within the Contemporary Performing Arts Department. Here she outlines some of the key elements of improvisation and how the dynamic between self and other develops in an actor's training.

49. Predicting infiltration and pollutant retention in sustainable drainage systems: Experiments, modelling and design

Abstract

A major problem of increasing urbanization is the rise in pollution caused by runoff, affecting water quality directly and due to combined sewer overflows. Among alternative strategies, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) such as rain gardens and other bioretention facilities is becoming more widespread. Previous research has focused primarily on hydrologic design, including the degree to which groundwater is replenished by these systems, and models have been developed to quantify the extent of that enhanced focused recharge. However, there are few tools for their design that adequately consider pollutant retention. We have developed a numerical model that simulates infiltration into different area systems with porous media of up to three layers, and can simulate movement and accumulation of metals considering macropore flow. This model is here further validated using new laboratory column results (for matrix and macropore flow), and applied to the design of a rain garden system for a planned roundabout in Kent, U.K, considering climate change scenarios. Results using past and potential future climate series show levels of lead can build up in the upper layers of the system, but only constitute a health hazard after approximately 10 years (when a management intervention such as replacing the upper few cm of soil is required). Implications and future opportunities are discussed.

Among alternative management strategies, the use of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) such as rain gardens and other bioretention facilities is becoming an increasingly attractive option to reduce these problems. However, there are few tools if any available for their design considering pollutant retention. In this paper, a dual-permeability based model that predicts the fate of heavy metals in SuDS is presented, and applied to the design of a rain garden system for a planned roundabout in Kent, UK. Preliminary design considered an upper root zone layer with organic soil and a sandy storage sub-layer, each 30 cm thick, for a bioretention area of 5 and 10% the size of the contributing impervious surface. Two scenarios are examined: the accumulation and movement of metals without macropores and the possibility of groundwater contamination due to preferential flow. It is shown that levels of lead can build up in the upper layers of the system, but only constitute a health hazard (surpass UK standard of 750 mg/kg) after 10 years. Simulations show that copper was successfully retained (no significant concentrations below 50 cm of rain garden soil depth). Finally, given concerns of preferential flow bypassing bioretention facilities, macropore flow was examined. Results indicated that due to site conditions it was not a threat to groundwater in the timeframe considered.
