We have learnt in the last decades that the majority of galaxies belong to high density regions interconnected in a sponge-like fashion. This large-scale structure is characterised by clusters, filaments, walls, where most galaxies concentrate, but also under-dense regions, called voids. The void regions and the galaxies within represent an ideal place for the study of galaxy formation and evolution as they are largely unaffected by the complex physical processes that transform galaxies in high-density environments. These void galaxies can hold the key as well to answer current challenges to the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. The Calar Alto Void Integral-field Treasury surveY (CAVITY) is a Legacy project approved by the Calar Alto Observatory to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopic information of $\sim300$ void galaxies in the Local Universe (0.005 < z < 0.050) covering from -17.0 to -21.5 in $\rm r$ band absolute magnitude. It officially started in January 2021 and has been awarded 110 useful dark observing nights at the 3.5 m telescope using the PMAS spectrograph. Complementary follow-up projects including deep optical imaging, integrated, as well as resolved CO data, and integrated HI spectra, have joint the PMAS observations and naturally complete the scientific aim of characterising galaxies in cosmic voids. The extension data has been denominated CAVITY+. The data will be available to the whole community in different data releases, the first of which is planned for July 2024, and it will provide the community with PMAS data cubes for around 100 void galaxies through a user friendly, and well documented, database platform. We present here the survey, sample selection, data reduction, quality control schemes, science goals, and some examples of the scientific power of the CAVITY and CAVITY+ data., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. Context. The present study addresses a key question related to our understanding of the relation between void galaxies and their environment: the relationship between luminous and dark matter in and around voids. Aims. To explore the extent to which local Universe voids are empty of matter, we study the full (dark+luminous) matter content of seven nearby cosmic voids that are fully contained within the CosmicFlows-3 volume. Methods. We obtained the matter-density profiles of seven cosmic voids using two independent methods. These were built from the galaxy redshift space two-point correlation function in conjunction with peculiar velocity gradients from the CosmicFlows-3 dataset. Results. The results are striking, because when the redshift survey is used, all voids show a radial positive gradient of galaxies, while based on the dynamical analysis, only three of these voids display a clear underdensity of matter in their center. Conclusions. This work constitutes the most detailed observational analysis of voids conducted so far, and shows that void emptiness should be derived from dynamical information. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is called to revolutionise essentially all areas of Astrophysics. With a collecting area of about a square kilometre, the SKA will be a transformational instrument, and its scientific potential will go beyond the interests of astronomers. Its technological challenges and huge cost requires a multinational effort, and Europe has recognised this by putting the SKA on the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). The Spanish SKA White Book is the result of the coordinated effort of 120 astronomers from 40 different research centers. The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerated Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) is a narrow band, very wide field Cosmological Survey to be carried out from the Javalambre Observatory in Spain with a purpose-built, dedicated 2.5m telescope and a 4.7 sq.deg. camera with 1.2Gpix. Starting in late 2015, J-PAS will observe 8500sq.deg. of Northern Sky and measure $0.003(1+z)$ photo-z for $9\times10^7$ LRG and ELG galaxies plus several million QSOs, sampling an effective volume of $\sim 14$ Gpc$^3$ up to $z=1.3$ and becoming the first radial BAO experiment to reach Stage IV. J-PAS will detect $7\times 10^5$ galaxy clusters and groups, setting constrains on Dark Energy which rival those obtained from its BAO measurements. Thanks to the superb characteristics of the site (seeing ~0.7 arcsec), J-PAS is expected to obtain a deep, sub-arcsec image of the Northern sky, which combined with its unique photo-z precision will produce one of the most powerful cosmological lensing surveys before the arrival of Euclid. J-PAS unprecedented spectral time domain information will enable a self-contained SN survey that, without the need for external spectroscopic follow-up, will detect, classify and measure $\sigma_z\sim 0.5\%$ redshifts for $\sim 4000$ SNeIa and $\sim 900$ core-collapse SNe. The key to the J-PAS potential is its innovative approach: a contiguous system of 54 filters with $145\AA$ width, placed $100\AA$ apart over a multi-degree FoV is a powerful "redshift machine", with the survey speed of a 4000 multiplexing low resolution spectrograph, but many times cheaper and much faster to build. The J-PAS camera is equivalent to a 4.7 sq.deg. "IFU" and it will produce a time-resolved, 3D image of the Northern Sky with a very wide range of Astrophysical applications in Galaxy Evolution, the nearby Universe and the study of resolved stellar populations., Comment: 215 pages, 70 figures. The massive exploitation of cosmic voids for precision cosmology in the upcoming dark energy experiments, requires a robust understanding of their internal structure, particularly of their density profile. We show that the void density profile is insensitive to the void radius both in a catalogue of observed voids and in voids from a large cosmological simulation. However, the observed and simulated voids display remarkably different profile shapes, with the former having much steeper profiles than the latter. Sparsity can not be the main reason for this discrepancy, as we demonstrate that the profile can be recovered with reasonable accuracy even with very sparse samples of tracers. On the other hand, the observed profile shows a significant dependence on the galaxy sample used to trace the matter distribution. Samples including low-mass galaxies lead to shallower profiles with respect to the samples where only massive galaxies are used, as faint galaxies live closer to the void centre. Eulerian cosmological codes are especially suited to properly describe the low density regions. This property makes this class of codes excellent tools to study the formation and evolution of cosmic voids. Following such ideas, we present the results of an Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamical and N-body simulation, that contrary to the common practice, has been designed to refine the computational grid in the underdense regions of the simulated volume. Thus, the void regions are better described due to the combined effect of the Eulerian character of the numerical technique and the use of high numerical resolution from the AMR approach. To analyse the outcome of this simulation, we have constructed a new void finder optimally suited to find the hierarchy of voids in AMR simulations. The algorithm identifies voids starting from the cells with least density and highest velocity divergence and then expanding the underdense volume until reaching the void walls, defined from the steepness of the density gradient. At redshift z=0, in a cosmological box of comoving side length 100 Mpc/h, we identify hundreds of voids with sizes up to 17 Mpc/h and typical density contrast of -0.8, which show a complex morphology and an intricate hierarchy of nested structures. The analysis of their mass density profile leads to the conclusion that a universal density profile can be applied to voids of any size, density, morphology and redshift., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures. We discuss the emission of gravitational radiation produced in encounters of dark matter galactic halos. To this aim we perform a number of numerical simulations of typical galaxy mergers, computing the associated gravitational radiation waveforms as well as the energy released in the processes. Our simulations yield dimensionless gravitational wave amplitudes of the order of $10^{-13}$ and gravitational wave frequencies of the order of $10^{-16}$ Hz, when the galaxies are located at a distance of 10 Mpc. These values are of the same order as those arising in the gravitational radiation originated by strong variations of the gravitational field in the early Universe, and therefore, such gravitational waves cannot be directly observed by ground-based detectors. We discuss the feasibility of an indirect detection by means of the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) induced by such waves. Our results show that the gravitational waves from encounters of dark matter galactic halos leave much too small an imprint on the CMB polarization to be actually observed with ongoing and future missions., Comment: 9 pages with revtex style, 3 ps figures; to be published in Physical Review D

We present a complete analysis, which includes morphology, kinematics, stellar populations and N-body simulations of CGCG 480-022, the most distant (cz=14317 km/s) isolated galaxy studied so far in such detail. The results all support the hypothesis that this galaxy has suffered a major merger event with a companion of ~0.1 times its mass. Morphology reveals the presence of a circumnuclear ring and possibly further ring debris. The radial velocity curve looks symmetrical, whilst the velocity dispersion increases with radius reaching values that do not correspond to a virialized system. Moreover, this galaxy deviates significantly from the Fundamental Plane and the Faber-Jackson relation. The stellar population analysis show that the ring is younger and more metal-rich, which suggest that it has undergone a fairly recent burst of star formation. A method for ray-tracing through n-body simulations has been recently proposed. It is based on a periodic universe covered by simulation boxes. Photons move along appropriate directions to avoid periodicity effects. Here, an improved version of this method is applied to simulate lensed CMB maps and maps of lens deformations. Particle mesh n-body simulations with appropriate boxes and resolutions are used to evolve the nonlinear inhomogeneities until present time. The resulting maps are statistically analyzed to look for deviations from Gaussianity. These deviations are measured --for the first time-- using correlations for configurations of n directions (n being smaller than 7). A wide range of angular scales are considered. We work in the framework of an inflationary cold dark matter universe with cosmological constant, in which the cosmological inhomogeneities are considered as gravitational lenses for the CMB photons. This lensing deforms the angular distribution of the CMB maps in such a way that the induced deformations are not Gaussian. Our main goal is the estimation of the deviations with respect to Gaussianity appeared in the distribution of deformations. In the new approach used in this paper, matter is evolved with a particle-mesh N-body code and, then, an useful ray-tracing technique designed to calculate the correlations of the lens deformations induced by nonlinear structures is applied. Our approach is described in detail and tested. Various correlations are estimated at an appropriate angular scale. The resulting values point out both deviations with respect to Gaussian statistics and a low level of correlation in the lens deformations., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Phys. rev. D

We investigate the evolution of angular momentum in SPH simulations of galaxy formation, paying particular attention to artificial numerical effects. We find that a cold gas disc forming in an ambient hot gas halo receives a strong hydrodynamic torque from the hot gas. By splitting the hydrodynamic force into artificial viscosity and pressure gradients, we find that the angular momentum transport is caused not by the artificial viscosity but by the pressure gradients. Using simple test simulations of shear flows, we conclude that the pressure gradient-based viscosity can be divided into two components: one due to the noisiness of SPH and the other to ram pressure. The former is problematic even with very high resolution because increasing resolution does not reduce the noisiness. On the other hand, the ram pressure effect appears only when a cold gas disc or sheet does not contain enough particles. In such a case, holes form in the disc or sheet, and then ram pressure from intra-hole hot gas, causes significant deceleration. In simulations of galactic disc formation, star formation usually decreases the number of cold gas particles, and hole formation leads to the fragmentation of the disc. To circumvent these problem, we modify the SPH algorithm, decoupling the cold from the hot gas phases, i.e. inhibiting the hydrodynamic interaction between cold and hot particles. This, a crude modelling of a multi-phase fluid in SPH cosmological simulations, leads to the formation of smooth extended cold gas discs and to better numerical convergence. The decoupling is applicable in so far as the self-gravitating gas disc with negligible external pressure is a good approximation for a cold gas disc. Non-linear evolution of cosmological energy density fluctuations triggers deviations from Gaussianity in the temperature distribution of the cosmic microwave background. A method to estimate these deviations is proposed. N-body simulations -- in a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology -- are used to simulate the strongly non-linear evolution of cosmological structures. It is proved that these simulations can be combined with the potential approximation to calculate the statistical moments of the CMB anisotropies produced by non-linear gravity. Previous estimates of the microwave background anisotropies produced by freely falling spherical clusters are discussed. These estimates are based on the Swiss-Cheese and Tolman-Bondi models. It is proved that these models give only upper limits to the anisotropies produced by the observed galaxy clusters. By using spherically symmetric codes including pressureless matter and a hot baryonic gas, new upper limits are obtained. The contributions of the hot gas and the pressureless component to the total anisotropy are compared. The effects produced by the pressure are proved to be negligible; hence, estimations of the cluster anisotropies based on N-body simulations are hereafter justified. After the phenomenon of violent relaxation, any realistic rich cluster can only produce small anisotropies with amplitudes of order $10^{-7}$. During the rapid process of violent relaxation, the anisotropies produced by nonlinear clusters are expected to range in the interval $(10^{-6},10^{-5})$.
