12. The Contributing Role of Family, School, and Peer Supportive Relationships in Protecting the Mental Wellbeing of Children and Adolescents

Abstract

Globally, mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in children and adolescents. Previous research has demonstrated that supportive relationships are a key protective factor against poor mental health in children, particularly amongst those who have experienced adversity. However, fewer studies have examined the relative impact of different types of supportive relationships. The current study examined the association between level of family adult support, school adult support, and school peer support and mental wellbeing in a sample of children (age 8-15 years, N = 2,074) from schools in the UK. All three sources of support were independently associated with mental wellbeing. Analyses demonstrated a graded relationship between the number of sources of support and the odds of low mental wellbeing (LMWB), reflecting a cumulative protective effect. While all three sources of support were best, it was not vital, and analyses demonstrated a protective effect of school sources of support on LMWB amongst children with low family support. Peer support was found to be particularly important, with prevalence of LMWB similar amongst children who had high peer support (but low family and school adult support), and those who had high family and school adult support, (but low peer support), indicating that high peer support has an equivalent impact of two other protective factors. Findings from the study highlight the crucial context schools provide in fostering positive peer relationships and supportive teacher--student relationships to promote mental health and resilience for all children, including both those with and without supportive home environments.

20. Developing intelligence to understand and prevent violence and alcohol-related harms in nightlife settings

Abstract

Violence and alcohol place huge burdens on public health, affecting individuals, widersociety and public services. Many of the harms associated with violence and alcohol occur in nightlife settings and preventing these harms is a priority for the UK government. Increasingly, a public health approach to prevention is evident in both national and localpolicies and strategies. The use of data and evidence to understand the nature of the problem and to inform, target, monitor and evaluate preventive activities is fundamental to this approach. This thesis and supporting publications illustrate how my research has supported the public health approach to the prevention of violence and alcohol-related harms in nightlife and other settings. Health data, such as emergency department (ED) attendance data, has a key role to play in the public health approach to prevention. The submitted articles illustrate how I have developed the use of ED data through establishing an injury surveillance system to inform prevention policies, strategies and practice at local and national levels. My analyses have been used to: identify the extent of alcohol-related harms; inform a nightlife management strategy; target prevention activity in nightlife areas where harms were more prevalent; and monitor trends in violence and alcohol-related harms over time. Further, my work has informed national policy; the collection of enhanced ED data on the circumstances of an assault is now being promoted by the UK Government. Whilst routine data sources such as ED data can provide a vast array of intelligence onnightlife violence and alcohol-related harms they do not provide the level of detail necessary to illustrate patterns of alcohol consumption during a night out, individuals’ experience of harms that do not come to the attention of authorities, or the wide range of risk and protective factors associated with these harms. Primary research is crucial to developing this knowledge. Thus, through studies conducted in England and cross-nationally, my research has identified that nightlife settings are the scenes of excessive alcohol consumption with preloading a common feature. Subsequently, many nightlife patrons enter nightlife areas already drunk. Over-serving of alcohol to drunks is common. A range of harms are experienced by nightlife patrons including verbal and physical aggression, sexual molestation and excessive drunkenness. Both individual and environmental (i.e. venue) factors can increase the risks of nightlife patron involvement in alcohol-related harms. In the UK, the prevention of harms in nightlife settings has primarily focused on developing safe nightlife environments. Few interventions have been developed that aim to tackle the culture of drunkenness, risky drinking behaviours (e.g. preloading) and the over service of alcohol to drunks that have been evidenced in my studies. With the links between alcohol and harms, such as violence, being well established, addressing the culture of drunkenness within nightlife settings has to be a key public health priority. Both primary research and analyses of routine data sources can support this approach by identifying at-risk communities where primary prevention interventions should best be targeted.

29. Research Informed Teaching at LJMU

Abstract

LJMU has a proud history of high quality research and knowledge exchange with a significant body of world-leading research, as evidenced in the recent REF2021 results. This work continues to be generated by academic staff, research staff and postgraduate research students. When we reflect on the impact of our research and knowledge exchange activity we often think in "REF terms" of who and what have we influenced and changed outside of the university. Our REF2021 impact case studies were replete with examples of public and private recipients of our work who helped mediate change in health, education, policy, well-being as well as industry and economic change. This supports key strategic actions for LJMU around Place and Partnership, enshrined in the LJMU Strategy 2030. This session "Research Informed Teaching at LJMU" turns the impact lens inwards to the university and asks what change and improvement has been made to our curricula and student experience on the back of our research and knowledge exchange work. This is now a core focus of the Research and Knowledge Exchange activity within the LJMU Strategy 2030 and is developed in the LJMU RKE Plan 2030. Also it seeks to elevate the role of our postgraduate students, something of a "hidden-minority" in an institution with "students at the heart". what was their experience of the knowledge development process and how can they and their novel work inspire taught students and change their experiences and opportunities. We have been collecting a range of "case studies" related to research informed teaching from around the faculties and we have asked the staff to identify the research work and research students whose new knowledge and stories they have weaved into curriculum content and development. We have asked these case studies to identify new lectures, modules and sometime whole programmes that have been borne out of our research and knowledge exchange and asked the staff to reflect on what this did for student experience, an enhanced knowledge or skill training and how this might play into greater or broader employment/career opportunities. From the first round of Faculty Research Informed Teaching Case studies we present exemplars from across all 5 Faculties in a lightning talk format for celebration, learning and on-going development of a rich research informed teaching culture across LJMU. 42. Swipe Right: Harms Associated With Using and Meeting People via Dating Apps.

Abstract

Across many countries, the use of dating applications and websites (DAWs) has become increasingly popular over recent years; however, research examining the relationship between DAWs use and experience of dating violence and/or other harms is limited. This study aims to explore the use, motivations, and experiences of harm associated with using DAWs and meeting people in person via DAWs. An online convenience sample pilot survey was completed by adults (n = 217) aged 18+ years, living in the UK or the Republic of Ireland, who had used a DAW in the past two years. Differences were found in usage, motivations, and experiences of using DAWs in age and gender. Nearly half, 46.5% of respondents reported having been a victim of at least one harm as a result of meeting someone in person via DAWs in their lifetime; 33.2% reported experiencing sexual violence, 27.2% verbal abuse, 8.3% sexual activity in exchange for goods and 6.5% physical assault. Further to this, 41.9% of respondents reported being "Catfished" in the past two years (i.e., the other person looking different in person compared to their DAWs profile). In multivariate analysis, experiencing at least one harm was significantly associated with female gender (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 4.0; p <.001), being aged 40+ years (AOR 3.1; p <.01; reference category, 18–29 years) and being "Catfished" (AOR 3.3; p <.001). In multivariate analysis, sexual violence was significantly associated with being female (AOR 6.9; p <.001), being aged 40+ years (AOR 2.9; p =.013; reference category, 18–29 years) and being "Catfished" (AOR 2.9; p =.001). The study reinforces the importance of understanding the use of DAWs, exposure to harms on and offline, and risks associated with "Catfishing." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
