1. Thermodynamics and geometrothermodynamics of regular black holes

Abstract

We assume the validity of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, as given in terms of the horizon area of the Bardeen regular black hole, and consider it as the fundamental thermodynamic equation. We derive and investigate the behavior of the main thermodynamic variables. Using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics, we derive the geometric properties of the corresponding equilibrium space and show that the curvature contains information about the stability properties and phase transition structure of the black hole.

2. Combination of oral activated charcoal plus low protein diet as a new alternative for handling in the old end-stage renal disease patients

Chronic dialysis is a valid therapeutic option in very elderly ESRD patients, even though the decision to dialyze or not has little impact on survival. Additionally, very old patients usually do not agree with starting chronic dialysis. Even though, activated charcoal is a cheap treatment for working as adsorbent for nitrogenous products its utility is very limited. We studied the combination of a low protein diet and oral activated charcoal to reduce serum urea and crea-tinine levels in very old ESRD patients who had refused to start chronic dialysis. Nine lucid, very old > 80 years, ESRD patients who had refused to start dialysis were prescribed a treatment based on a combination of a very low protein diet and oral activated charcoal (30 gram/day). None of the patients had anuria, oliguria, edema, significant metabolic acidosis or hyperkalemia. None of them had significant gastrointestinal symptoms. After one week and ten months of charcoal use signi-ficant decrease in blood urea and creatinine levels was observed and none of them required emer-gency dialysis during this time. In conclusion, in patients more than 80 years of age low protein diet and oral activated charcoal may control the uremic symptoms effectively.

4. Einstein-Maxwell-Dilatonic phantom black holes: Thermodynamics and geometrothermodynamics

Abstract

We use the Legendre invariant formalism of geometrothermodynamics to investigate the geometric properties of the equilibrium space of a spherically symmetric phantom black hole with electric charge and dilaton. We find that at certain points of the equilibrium space, the thermodynamic curvature is characterized by the presence of singularities that are interpreted as phase transitions. We also investigate the phase transition structure by using the standard approach of black hole thermodynamics based upon the analysis of the heat capacity and response functions. We show compatibility between the two approaches. In addition, a new type of phase transition is found which is due to the presence of phantom energy and corresponds to a transition between black hole states with different stability properties., Comment: New appendices and comments added

Abstract

We show that to investigate the thermodynamic properties of charged phantom spherically symmetric anti-de-Sitter black holes, it is necessary to consider the cosmological constant as a thermodynamic variable so that the corresponding fundamental equation is a homogeneous function defined on an extended equilibrium space. We explore all the thermodynamic properties of this class of black holes by using the classical physical approach, based upon the analysis of the fundamental equation, and the alternative mathematical approach as proposed in geometrothermodynamics. Abstract

Thin Film technology has widespread applications in everyday electronics, notably Liquid Crystal Display screens, solar cells, and organic light emitting diodes. We explore the potential of this technology as charged particle radiation tracking detectors for use in High Energy Physics experiments such as those at the Large Hadron Collider or the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Through modern fabrication techniques, a host of semiconductor materials are available to construct thin, flexible detectors with integrated electronics with pixel sizes on the order of a few microns. Abstract

A domestic ferret from Lima, Peru, died after ten days of non-specific clinical signs. Based on pathology, immunohistochemistry and molecular analysis, ferret systemic coronavirus (FRSCV)-associated disease was diagnosed for the first time in South America. This report highlights the potential spread of pathogens by the international pet trade.

Abstract

We formulate thermodynamics of economic systems in terms of an arbitrary probability distribution for a conserved economic quantity. As in statistical physics, thermodynamic macroeconomic variables emerge as the mean value of microeconomic variables and their determination is reduced to the computation of the partition function, starting from an arbitrary function. Explicit hypothetical examples are given which include linear and nonlinear economic systems, as well as multiplicative systems such as those dominated by a Pareto law distribution. Abstract

This study using the Catalan PISCIS cohort explores risk factors of migrants’ late presentation and the impact of late presentation on their health outcomes. We analyse 9590 new HIV diagnoses enrolled in the cohort between 2004 and 2016. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models are used to identify risk factors associated with late presentation among migrants, giving crude and adjusted odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals. Cox regression models are estimated to identify risk factors associated with AIDS/death, and crude and adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals are reported. Late presentation is higher in migrants than non-migrants. Among migrants, region of origin is associated with late presentation and AIDS/death during follow-up. The results highlight persisting inequalities in HIV diagnosis and care among migrants in Catalonia. Targeted interventions addressed to specific subgroups in the migrant population are needed. © 2018, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

Abstract

This ethnography was conducted in Barcelona, a city that provides different gay leisure resources, such as gay saunas. We aimed to analyze from studies on gender and masculinities, how sexuality, perception of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and preventive measures are articulated in gay sauna male sex workers (MSW). Ten in-depth interviews and observation were conducted between 2012 and 2016. Safe sex practices are more frequent with clients, while risk practices are carried out more with non-commercial partners. Sexual orientation plays an important role. Homosexuals assume riskier practices in sex work than heterosexuals. Drug use or lack of support networks were associated with higher social vulnerability and risk behaviors. Contracting HIV still creates fear, while having other STIs is perceived as part of a man's sexual life. The MSW affirms masculinity with concurrent sexual partners, breadwinner, and on the other hand, questions a heteronormative model. Interventions for the prevention of HIV and STIs in this group should consider social determinants such as inferior work alternatives and the provision of more significant social support.

45. Prolapso de hemipene y hemipenectomía en un gecko leopardo (Eublepharis macularius)

Abstract

Copulatory organ prolapse is a condition more frequently observed in chelonians and ophidians than in lizards. Most common causes are infections, forced separation during mating and inflammation associated to the use of probes for sex determination. Moreover, many other predisposing factors are described (hypocalcaemia, urolithiasis, etc.), but etiological diagnosis is rarely achieved. A four years old leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) was received presenting unilateral hemipenile prolapse. Medical therapy was performed using 50 % dextrose baths and prednisone (2 mg/kg) during 24 hours, but it was unsuccessful. Due to the fact that the prolapsed hemipenis showed signs of necrosis, surgical resection was performed. The patient was anesthetized using the combination ketamine (5 mg/kg), dexmedetomidine (0.1 mg/kg), and midazolam (1 mg/kg); also, lidocaine (4 mg/ kg) was administered for local block, whereas atipamezole (0.5 mg/kg) was used for antagonizing dexmedetomidine. The used anesthetic protocol allowed an adequate surgical management. Hemipenectomy solved the problem without any observed complication., El prolapso del órgano copulatorio es una afección más frecuentemente observada en quelonios y ofidios que en saurios. Las causas más comunes son infecciones, separación forzada durante la cópula e inflamación asociada al uso de sondas para determinación del sexo. Además, se han descrito muchas otros factores asociados (hipocalcemia, urolitiasis), pero rara vez se logra llegar al diagnóstico etiológico. Un gecko leopardo (Eublepharis macularius) de cuatro años de edad fue recibido presentando prolapso unilateral de hemipene. Se realizó tratamiento médico usando baños en dextrosa 50 % y prednisona (2 mg/kg) durante 24 horas, pero éste no fue exitoso. Debido a que el hemipene prolapsado presentó signos de necrosis, se realizó la resección quirúrgica. El paciente fue anestesiado empleando la combinación ketamina (5 mg/kg), dexmedetomidina (0,1 mg/kg) y midazolam (1 mg/kg). Además, se administró lidocaína (4 mg/kg) como bloqueo local y se usó atipamezol para antagonizar la dexmedetomidina. El protocolo anestésico empleado permitió el manejo quirúrgico adecuado. Abstract

Objectives: Several procedures have been advocated as regenerative procedures in periodontology, but one of the most widely used techniques up to now is guided tissue regeneration (GTR). Likewise, different assessment methods based on clinical, radiographic or histological measurements have been proposed for the evaluation of these regenerative procedures. However, none of the methods used for human material incorporates quantitative X-ray microanalysis to assess the degree of mineralization of the regenerated periodontal hard tissues. The objective of this report was to evaluate, using quantitative X-ray microprobe analysis, the newly-formed hard tissue in a periodontal infrabony defect.Methods: Electron microprobe analysis was used to study the nature of the newly-formed hard tissue 3 years after treatment with guided tissue regeneration in a patient with localized aggressive periodontitis.Results: Our quantitative analyses, using the peak-to-background method, showed calcium/phosphorus mass ratio of 1.50±0.38 in the newly-formed hard tissue around the affected tooth root.Conclusion: Quantitative X-ray microprobe analysis is a useful tool that may provide an accurate assessment of the degree of mineralization in an extremely small tissue sample.
