Abstract

In this study, we report the impact of the magnetic field on protein permeability through magnetic-responsive, block copolymer, nanocomposite membranes with hydrophilic and hydrophobic characters. The hydrophilic nanocomposite membranes were composed of spherical polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized through polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) with iron oxide NPs coated with quaternized poly(2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate. The hydrophobic nanocomposite membranes were prepared via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) containing poly (methacrylic acid) and meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid-coated superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPNPs). The permeation experiments were carried out using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the model solute, in the absence of the magnetic field and under permanent and cyclic magnetic field conditions OFF/ON (strategy 1) and ON/OFF (strategy 2). It was observed that the magnetic field led to a lower reduction in the permeate fluxes of magnetic-responsive membranes during BSA permeation, regardless of the magnetic field strategy used, than that obtained in the absence of the magnetic field. Nevertheless, a comparative analysis of the effect caused by the two cyclic magnetic field strategies showed that strategy 2 allowed for a lower reduction of the original permeate fluxes during BSA permeation and higher protein sieving coefficients. Overall, these novel magneto-responsive block copolymer nanocomposite membranes proved to be competent in mitigating biofouling phenomena in bioseparation processes.

Abstract

International audience; The preparation of well-arranged nano-porous thin films from an ABA triblock copolymer of polystyrene-block-poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)-block-polystyrene (PS-PNaSS-PS) is reported. This copolymer was self-assembled in a N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF)/water mixture and the resulting micellar solution was used to prepare thin films via the compact packing of the flower-like micelles using spin coating method. The films were characterized by several microscopy techniques such as TEM, AFM, and SEM. Permeation test was performed to highlight the interconnected porous nature of the polymeric network obtained. Under applied water pressure, the micellar morphology was altered and a partial fusion of the micelles was observed that resulted in a change in the water permeability. Such hydrophilic nanoporous thin films with negatively charged interface could find applications in membrane filtration.

Abstract

Les matériaux poreux couvrent un champ scientifique et technologique multidisciplinaire très large. Ils sont mis en œuvre dans de nombreux dispositifs et procédés existants ou émergents, liés à de forts enjeux sociétaux tant en termes environnementaux qu’économiques. Notre choix a été d’illustrer les avancées dans le domaine des matériaux poreux au travers de trois exemples spécifiques : celui de l’ingénierie des matériaux poreux avec le cas de mésoporeux organiques préparés à partir de polymères à blocs, celui de l’utilisation de la modélisation et de la simulation numérique avec le cas de l’adsorption d’espèces moléculaires à l’échelle nanométrique, et enfin celui des applications technologiques avec le cas des isolants thermiques.

The invention relates to a porous filtration membrane based on cross-linked cellulose ether having a permeate flux at 20°C and at 3.5 bars of at least 80 L/h/m2 , and to the use thereof for the hot filtration of aqueous fluids. Abstract

Propargyl methacrylate with its acetylene function protected with a silyl group is polymerized via the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process, using cyanoisopropyl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as RAFT agent, and subsequently deprotected to afford a polymer backbone where each repeated unit is decorated with an acetylene functionality (1000 < Mn < 13,600 g mol-1, 1.07 < PDI < 1.29). In parallel, an azide functionalized xanthate (ethoxythiocarbonylsulfanyl-acetic acid 3-azido-propyl ester) was employed to prepare narrow polydisperse poly(vinyl acetate) (M n = 850 g mol-1, PDI = 1.20). The two polymers are conjugated by Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to afford narrow polydisperse comb polymer (1.12 < PDI < 1.18, 3400 < Mn < 12,500 g mol-1, based on linear polystyrene calibration, 4500 < M n theo < 15,600 g mol-1). The study places special emphasis on following the copper catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition via Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) as well as via on-line UV-Vis photospectrometry on several model compounds, i.e. the nonmonomer inserted azido-xanthate RAFT/MADLX. agent as well as a 2-propargyl-2-bromopropionate and 3-azidopropyl-2-bromopropionate model compounds. A suitable absorption band in the VIS at 666 nm (tentatively assigned to a charge transfer complex between copper(I) and the forming triazole moieties) is identified as a promising sensor for following the click reaction kinetics, thus allowing for the rapid assessment of reaction completion in an on-line fashion. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The coupling of the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique with the copper-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition ("click chemistry") as a simple and effective way to generate polystyrene (PS) macrocycles is presented. The novel strategy entails the synthesis of linear PS backbones followed by endgroup modification to facilitate click chemistry for the formation of ring shaped polymers. An azido group modified 4-cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate is employed as the chain transfer agent in the RAFT mediated polymerization of styrene to form PS with Mn from 2000 g mol-1 to 6000 g mol-1 and PDI < 1.2. To facilitate the cyclization of the polystyrene chains by click coupling, the thiocarbonylthio endgroup is removed and concomitantly replaced by an alkyne bearing function. This is carried out via the radical decomposition of excess azobis(4-cyano valeric acid) (ACVA) modified with an alkyne endgroup in the presence of the thiocarbonylthio-capped PS. The successful click endgroup modifications of several polystyrenes along with the results from the cyclization of a PS with Mn = 4300 g mol-1 are discussed in detail. This improved method avoids the presence of thiocarbonylthio functions in the macrocycle, thus considerably increasing the chemical stability of these polymers. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
