Nitrogen (N) budgets at the farm gate level account for all N inputs and outputs in a particular farm. Indicators derived from the N budgets are crucial for characterising farm performance, due to the important role of N in food production and environmental sustainability. However, comparisons among farm N indicators from different farms, farm types and regions require conducting systematic monitoring of N budgets following a standardised and solid approach. Because of this, the EU N Expert Panel (EUNEP) developed a guidance document to estimate N inputs and outputs at the farm gate and calculate the N indicators. In this study, the EUNEP approach was applied to 1,240 farms from various case studies in Europe, with the aim of increasing understanding of the factors that contribute to differences in N indicators at the farm level, and to derive possible target values. Farm level data were collected from six countries located in five different environmental zones in Europe: Atlantic Central (France, Ireland, The Netherlands), Atlantic North (Denmark, Germany), Continental (Germany), Mediterranean North (Spain) and Mediterranean South (Spain). The N budgets were calculated for each farm, and the data were analysed to calculate three related indicators: Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), N output and N surplus. The results show remarkable variations in N indicators across Europe. Arable farms had the lowest mean N input and N surplus and the highest mean N output and NUE, whereas livestock farms had the highest mean N input and N surplus, and the lowest mean N output and NUE. Median NUE was 61% for arable farms, 28% for dairy and 43% for pig farms. Externalisation had a large effect on animal farm N indicators, and the results highlight the need to introduce correction factors when calculating and interpreting the farm balance. After accounting for externalisation, median NUE decreased to 19% for dairy farms and 23% for pig farms. Therefore, several options were proposed to better consider feed production and manure management in N indicators calculations. Overall, the differences in NUE between farms were mainly related to differences in farm type, management (production intensity and practices) and probably also soil and climate conditions. Nitrogen indicator targets for specific farm types and linkages with agricultural or environmental policy may contribute to optimise NUE and reduce N surplus at the farm level.

The anaerobic digestion of food waste for energy recovery produces a nutrient-rich digestate which is a valuable source of crop available nitrogen (N). As with any ‘new’ material being recycled to agricultural land it is important to develop best management practices that maximise crop available N supply, whilst minimising emissions to the environment. The objective of this study was to measure N losses following application of food-based digestate, green/food compost and green compost to agricultural land via ammonia (NH3) volatilisation and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions to air, and nitrate (NO3) leaching to water, and to compare these with losses from livestock manure (slurry and solids farmyard manure –FYM).

In this review we aimed to synthetize and analyze the most promising GHGs mitigation strategies for Mediterranean cropping systems. A description of most relevant measures, based on the best crop choice and management by farmers (i.e., agronomical practices), was firstly carried out. Many of these measures can be also efficient in other climatic regions, but here we provide particular results and discussion of their efficiencies for Mediterranean cropping systems. An integrated assessment of management practices on mitigating each component of the global warming potential (N2O and CH4 emissions and C sequestration) of production systems considering potential side-effects of their implementation allowed us to propose the best strategies to abate GHG emissions, while sustaining crop yields and mitigating other sources of environmental pollution (e.g. nitrate leaching and ammonia volatilization).

The use of winter cover crops enhances environmental benefits and, if properly managed, may supply economic and agronomic advantages. Nitrogen retained in the cover crop biomass left over the soil reduces soil N availability, which might enhance the N fertiliser use efficiency of the subsequent cash crop and the risk of depressive yield and pre-emptive competition. The main goal of this study was to determine the cover crop effect on crop yield, N use efficiency and fertiliser recovery in a 2-year study included in a long-term (10 years) maize/cover crop production system. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and vetch (Vicia sativa L.), as cover crops, were compared with a fallow treatment during the maize intercropping period. All treatments were cropped following the same procedure, including 130 kg N ha−1 with 15N fertiliser. The N rate was reduced from the recommended N rate based on previous results, to enhance the cover crop effect. Crop yield and N uptake, soil N mineral and 15N fertiliser recovered in plants and the soil were determined at different times. The cover crops behaved differently: the barley covered the ground faster, while the vetch attained a larger coverage and N content before being killed. Maize yield and biomass were not affected by the treatments. Maize N uptake was larger after vetch than after barley, while fallow treatment provided intermediate results. This result can be ascribed to N mineralization of vetch residues, which results in an increased N use efficiency of maize. All treatments showed low soil N availability after the maize harvest; however, barley also reduced the N in the upper layers before maize planting, increasing the risk of pre-emptive competition. In addition to the year-long effect of residue decomposition, there was a cumulative effect on the soil’s capacity to supply N after 7 years of cover cropping, larger for the vetch than for the barley.

Crop residues protect the soil against erosion and reduce agrochemicals in runoff water. Crop residues and soils are spectrally different in the absorption features associated with cellulose and lignin. Our objectives were to: (1) assess the effects of soil and crop residue water contents on the remotely sensed estimates of crop residue cover and (2) propose a method to mitigate these effects. Reflectance spectra of diverse crops and soils were acquired in the laboratory and the analyses was extended to agricultural fields with different crop residue covers and a wide range of moisture conditions. The slope of the linear relationship with the Cellulose Absorption Index was very sensitive to moisture conditions, whereas the slope of the Shortwave Infrared Normalized Difference Residue Index was altered in a lesser extent. Water indices that provided reliable estimates of the water content could be used to estimate crop residue cover corrected by moisture conditions.

Los cultivos cubierta (CC) son eficientes para reducir el lixiviado de nitratos, evitar la erosión o mejorar las propiedades de los suelos. Pero hay pocos estudios que evalúen el impacto total, y es necesario asegurar que las ventajas no se compensen con las desventajas que puedan surgir, como la salinización. Buscando una mejor comprensión de estos procesos complejos, en este estudio se analizaron las dinámicas del agua, nitrógeno y sales en un monocultivo de maíz, intercalado con CC, mediante una doble aproximación con datos observados en campo y simulación con un modelo hidrológico. Los CC redujeron el lixiviado de nitratos sin incrementar la salinidad del suelo, reduciendo la salinidad en superficie en el momento de la siembra del maíz. Aunque los CC redujeron las pérdidas de sales brutas respecto al barbecho, no fue necesario aumentar el riego para favorecer el lixiviado de sale, reduciendo el riesgo de contaminación por nitratos.

Nitrate leaching beyond the root zone can increase water contamination and decrease crop available N. Cover crops (CC) used in spite of fallow are an alternative to reduce nitrate contamination, because reducing drainage and soil mineral N accumulation. CC can improve important characteristics in irrigated land as water retention capacity or soil aggregate stability.

Una de las críticas realizadas a los cultivos cubierta (CC) es la competición por los recursos que puede producirse con el cultivo principal que se establece después. Se realizó un ensayo para estudiar el efcto de la fecha de matado del CC sobre el contenido de agua y nitrógeno (N) del suelo. Los tratamientos comparado fueron el barbercho y un CC sembrado en octubre y matado en dos fechas en primavera. Se estudiaron numerosas variables relativas a la biomasa del CC y su composición, el N inorgánico. Se midió diariamente la humedad del suelo hasta 1.2 m. El riesgo de competición por agua y nutrientes se redujo con la fecha de matado temprana, que conservó el agua de lluvia entre ambas fechas y permitió más tiempo para la liberación de N. La fecha de matado resultó ser cricial para optimizar los beneficios derivados de los CC y minimizar sus posibles desventajas.

The convergence process among European academic degrees pursues the exchange of graduate students and the adaptation of university programs to social demand. Within the framework of the European Higher Education, European universities will need to be more competitive not only by increasing or maintaining the student enrolment, but also in their academic performance. Thus, the reinforcing of English language education within the University Programs might play an important role to reach these objectives. In this sense, a complete survey was accomplished at the Agricultural Egineering School of Madrid (ETSIA ) addressing issues such as: identification the needs for bilingual instruction at ETSIA, identification resources needed and interest and background in English language of students and professors (San José et al., 2013). The conclusions and recommendations to promote the bilingual instruction in the ETSIA, taking into account the approaches followed by other Spanish universities, are presented in this work.

Universities are offering more and more courses and programmes in an additional language. At HEPCLIL, therefore, we would like to debate the methodological im - plications of these changes, giving voice to practical classroom experiences and initiatives. We would also like to act as a platform for cutting-edge research on CLIL in higher education. What impact does teaching in an additional language have on content or language learning? What are the effects on teachers and stu - dents in higher education?

The CENTURY soil organic matter model was adapted for the DSSAT (Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer), modular format in order to better simulate the dynamics of soil organic nutrient processes (Gijsman et al., 2002). The CENTURY model divides the soil organic carbon (SOC) into three hypothetical pools: microbial or active material (SOC1), intermediate (SOC2) and the largely inert and stable material (SOC3) (Jones et al., 2003). At the beginning of the simulation, CENTURY model needs a value of SOC3 per soil layer which can be estimated by the model (based on soil texture and management history) or given as an input. Then, the model assigns about 5% and 95% of the remaining SOC to SOC1 and SOC2, respectively. The model performance when simulating SOC and nitrogen (N) dynamics strongly depends on the initialization process. The common methods (e.g. Basso et al., 2011) to initialize SOC pools deal mostly with carbon (C) mineralization processes and less with N. Dynamics of SOM, SOC, and soil organic N are linked in the CENTURY-DSSAT model through the C/N ratio of decomposing material that determines either mineralization or immobilization of N (Gijsman et al., 2002). The aim of this study was to evaluate an alternative method to initialize the SOC pools in the DSSAT-CENTURY model from apparent soil N mineralization (Napmin) field measurements by using automatic inverse calibration (simulated annealing). The results were compared with the ones obtained by the iterative initialization procedure developed by Basso et al., 2011.

Introducing cover crops (CC) interspersed with intensively fertilized crops in rotation has the potential to reduce nitrate leaching. This paper evaluates various strategies involving CC between maize and compares the economic and environmental results with respect to a typical maize?fallow rotation. The comparison is performed through stochastic (Monte-Carlo) simulation models of farms? profits using probability distribution functions (pdfs) of yield and N fertilizer saving fitted with data collected from various field trials and pdfs of crop prices and the cost of fertilizer fitted from statistical sources. Stochastic dominance relationships are obtained to rank the most profitable strategies from a farm financial perspective. A two-criterion comparison scheme is proposed to rank alternative strategies based on farm profit and nitrate leaching levels, taking the baseline scenario as the maize?fallow rotation. The results show that when CC biomass is sold as forage instead of keeping it in the soil, greater profit and less leaching of nitrates are achieved than in the baseline scenario. While the fertilizer saving will be lower if CC is sold than if it is kept in the soil, the revenue obtained from the sale of the CC compensates for the reduced fertilizer savings. The results show that CC would perhaps provide a double dividend of greater profit and reduced nitrate leaching in intensive irrigated cropping systems in Mediterranean regions.

Application of nitrogen (N) fertilizers in agricultural soils increases the risk of N loss to the atmosphere in the form of ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO)and the water bodies as nitrate (NO3-). The implementation of agricultural management practices can affect these losses. In Mediterranean irrigation systems, the greatest losses of NO3-through leaching occur within the irrigation and the intercropperiod. One way to abate these losses during the intercrop period is the use of cover crops that absorb part of the residual N from the root zone (Gabriel and Quemada, 2011). Moreover, during the following crop, these species could be applied as amendments to the soil, providing both C and N to the soil. This effect of cover and catch crops on decreasing the pool of N potentially lost has focused primarily on NO3-leaching. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on N2O emission during the in tercrop period in a maize system and its subsequent incorporation into the soil in the following maize crop.

In irrigated areas where cover crop establishment can be assured, consequent soil or nutrient conservation could increase sustainability of cropping systems. Replacing bare fallow with cover crops may increase sustainability by enhancing soil aggregate stability, water retention capacity or controlling nitrate leaching. Nevertheless, adoption of cover crops increase evapotranspiration and reduce water percolation beyond the root systems; therefore, it could lead to salt accumulation in the upper soil layers. This study was conducted during four years to determine the effect of replacing bare fallow by a cover crop on soil salt accumulation and salt leaching in an irrigated maize production system.

This is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license., Legumes offer the opportunity to reduce the nitrogen (N) fertilizer requirements of the crop rotation but the capacity of the subsequent crop to recover the N provided by the legume determines the fertilizer saving. Therefore, breeding for genotypes capable of take up N under different limiting conditions is essential for understanding crop performance and optimizing fertilization. The objective of this work was to test the ability of four wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes with different drought-tolerance (Cellule, Apache, Allez-y, and Nogal) to take up N from the precedent legume under different water scenarios. Two field experiments with pea–wheat and barley–wheat crop rotations, two irrigations levels, and three N treatments were conducted in central Spain over 3 years. The biomass, N uptake, and nitrogen nutrition index (NNI) were determined at flowering, and the grain yield (GY), grain N concentration (GNC), and N output at harvest. The precedent legume crops enabled a reduction in N fertilizer, but its effect depended on the genotype and climate conditions. The drought-tolerant genotypes (Apache and Cellule) had the highest NNI, biomass, GY, and N output under low water and N inputs, whereas Allez-y and Nogal obtained better performance under non-limiting conditions. Diseño de un sistema de fertirrigacion para cafe en Colombia.

El objeto del presente proyecto es el diseño integral del jardín en una parcela de una vivienda unifamiliar situada en el término municipal de Duruelo, en la provincia de Segovia. Dicha parcela se ubica concretamente en el número 139 de la urbanización Monte de Los Cortos, perteneciente a la pedanía de Los Cortos, que a su vez es un núcleo poblacional de Duruelo. El promotor es privado, ya que es el dueño de la propiedad inmueble sita en dicha parcela. La parcela en cuestión tiene una superficie de 2074 m2. El promotor, ha decidido encargar la creación de un proyecto de ajardinamiento para la parcela de la que es su segunda residencia. Este ha indicado una serie de requisitos generales que habrán de ser tenidos en cuenta para la realización del proyecto de ajardinamiento de la parcela. En primer lugar, y dado que la urbanización donde se ubica la parcela se encuentra inmersa en un sabinar protegido, la prioridad máxima será el respeto a los ejemplares arbóreos ya existentes en la parcela. Estos consisten principalmente en ejemplares de sabina, encina y algunas especies de árboles frutales ya arraigados. En ningún caso se permitirá la tala de ningún ejemplar, tanto por la exigencia del promotor, como de las autoridades locales, en este caso el ayuntamiento, que no concede permisos de tala salvo por motivos muy concretos y justificados. En segundo lugar, y dado que la parcela cuenta con un desnivel considerable, el promotor ha expresado su deseo de que el diseño incluya dos zonas bien diferenciadas. La zona anterior de la parcela, que es la que más uso tiene, deberá ser ajardinada con especies ornamentales y césped, así como un huerto. La zona posterior, que apenas es transitada, deberá respetar en la medida de lo posible y ser ajardinada únicamente con ejemplares arbóreos autóctonos que no necesiten ser regados. En tercer lugar, el promotor indica que desea mantener la alineación de lilos que tiene junto al muro frontal de la parcela y que desea la creación de una alineación de rosales a ambos lados del camino que comunica la puerta peatonal de la parcela con el acceso a la vivienda. En cuarto lugar, el promotor indica que está dispuesto a asumir un nivel de mantenimiento del jardín medio, si bien requiere un diseño armónico y acorde a sus preferencias. Entre estas, indica que prefiere espacios diáfanos, abiertos y lo más luminosos posibles, a la vez que rechaza la presencia de elementos como fuentes, estanques, bancos o elementos de mobiliario urbano similares.

The intercropping of summer-growing perennial grasses with winter crops or "Pasture cropping" is a no-tillage technique that might adapt to the climatic conditions of the central region of Spain. This system would allow growing annual crops into perennial grasses when these become inactive to increase the overall productivity of the system (grass and/or grain) while improving several environmental features. The effects of such system on the establishment and production of winter crops, the behaviour of the perennial grasses, the development of weed populations and the levels of inorganic soil nitrogen were analyzed in order to determine its feasibility. Three cropping systems (Conventional cropping, pasture cropping with Cynodon dactylon and pasture cropping with Eragrostis curvula) were assessed over two winter crops (Barley and Vetch) during two years. There were no differences in the establishment of winter crops in any management assessed. In spite of this, pasture cropping reduced winter crops yields up to 50-60% in years with low rainfall in spring. Regarding weed control, pasture cropping showed a significant suppression on total weed density and biomass when rainfall was no limited. The growth of perennial grasses was limited by the severe drought conditions and high temperatures present during the summer in some of the study years. As a result, their summer dry biomass production was highly variable ranging from zero to approximately 6 Tons/ha. Pasture cropping management recorded a reduction in inorganic N content that ranged from 37% to 64% compared to conventional management, regardless of the perennial species used. In conclusion, the pasture cropping technique would not adapt to the environmental conditions of central Spain. Future work should be directed at investigating the effects of managing irrigation to avoid or reduce yield losses for competition between crop and pasture and the use of legume as a perennial crop instead a tropical grass

El uso de cultivos cubierta invernales (CC) en rotaciones anuales en sustitución a un barbecho durante el periodo entre cultivos es una estrategia que ha demostrado ser capaz de aumentar la sostenibilidad en muchos de los sistemas de cultivo. A pesar de sus múltiples beneficios que van desde la mejora de la calidad del suelo, el reciclaje de nutrientes o control de malas hierbas (MH), el uso de CC sigue siendo minoritario. Una mejora de la comprensión en su manejo permitiría maximizar sus beneficios y extender su uso. En este trabajo han sido explorados dos aspectos del manejo de los CC en sistemas de regadío entre cultivos comerciales de verano: la fecha y el método de terminación en primavera, y su impacto en diferentes variables del sistema planta-suelo. Para ello, se han realizado tres ensayos experimentales de campo de dos años de duración cada uno. En dos de estos ensayos el CC fue una mezcla cebada/veza (Hordeum vulgare L./Vicia sp.). El otro trabajo experimental fue desarrollado igualmente a lo largo de dos campañas, pero ubicado en un ensayo de larga duración con CC (cebada, veza y suelo desnudo (SD)). Los ensayos se localizaron en Aranjuez (Madrid), clima Mediterráneo semiárido, siendo los cultivos comerciales de verano empleados maíz (Zea mays L.) y girasol (Helianthus annuus L.). Además, el impacto de la fecha de terminación fue confirmado en otro trabajo en el que mediante la calibración y validación del modelo de balances de agua y nutrientes WAVE se evaluaron múltiples escenarios de manejo de CC. También permitió evaluar el impacto de los CC y su manejo en condiciones de cambio climático. En uno de los ensayos, un retraso en la fecha de terminación del CC condujo a una mayor cantidad de residuo en superficie y más resistente a la descomposición. Los CC mostraron su capacidad de reciclaje de nutrientes que fue potenciada por una fecha tardía de terminación. Sin embargo, esta fecha tardía condujo a un mayor agotamiento de nutrientes del suelo. Igualmente, condujo a un mayor agotamiento de agua en el suelo que no se vio compensado por una reducción en la evaporación. El trabajo de modelización confirmó la competencia con el cultivo comercial por parte del CC que se puede ver agravada con una terminación tardía y que es crucial en escenarios con baja disponibilidad de agua y nutrientes en el suelo. Además, bajo condiciones de cambio climático, los CC potenciaron el beneficio de control de la lixiviación manteniendo los niveles de competencia con el cultivo comercial. En el ensayo integrado dentro del experimento de larga duración se estudió el impacto de los CC y su fecha de terminación en el control de MH. Ambas especies redujeron la densidad de MH frente a un SD en primavera. Sin embargo, la fecha de terminación solo tuvo impacto uno de los dos años, en que una fecha tardía supuso un retraso de la emergencia de MH. Por otro lado, el banco de semillas realizado tras 10 años de ensayo con CC confirmó el control de los CC sobre algunas especies (i.e. Xanthium spinosum L.), pero advirtió que el control de MH por los CC es incompleto, por lo que deben ser usados como una herramienta más en un manejo integrado. La terminación del CC con roller-crimper dejó el residuo en superficie como acolchado y permitió preservar la humedad en el suelo en primavera y controlar de forma eficiente las MH en verano en comparación con la incorporación de residuos. El uso de roller-crimper sin glifosato resultó ineficaz uno de los dos años conduciendo a un menor rendimiento del cultivo comercial. Esta menor productividad se tradujo en un mayor riesgo económico para el agricultor. Los resultados del segundo año sugirieron que el uso de roller-crimper permitiría ahorrar labores de post-emergencia estivales ya que fue menos dependiente de ellas que la incorporación de residuos para obtener valores de productividad competitivos y valores de eficiencia de uso de N altos. Los resultados de N en el residuo del CC presente tras la cosecha del maíz sugirieron que el uso de métodos de terminación que dejan el residuo en superficie debe tener en cuenta el aprovechamiento de ese N residual para evitar su lixiviación en otoño. Los CC pueden reducir el consumo energético frente a un sistema convencional si su introducción en la rotación supone un ahorro en la dosis de fertilizante del cultivo comercial. En comparación con el enterrado del residuo, el roller-crimper supuso un consumo energético 43% menor debido a la disminución de laboreo. Ese ahorro en fertilizante puede conducir a que el coste económico total sea también inferior. La elección de labores que reduzcan el uso de herbicidas supondría un ahorro económico y disminuiría los riesgos asociados al uso excesivo de agroquímicos. La terminación inefectiva por parte del roller-crimper sin apoyo de glifosato condujo a un mayor riesgo en el retorno de beneficios neto con respecto a otros métodos de terminación. ----------ABSTRACT---------- The use of winter cover crops (CC) in annual rotations replacing a fallow during the intercropping period is a strategy that has proven to be capable of increasing sustainability in many cropping systems. Despite their multiple environmental benefits, the CC use remains low. An improvement of the understanding in its management would allow to maximize their benefits and extend their use. In this work, two CC management aspects have been explored: the termination date and the termination method in spring. Their impact on different variables of the plant-soil system (residue quantity and quality, soil water and N content, weed control) has been studied. To achieve this, two two-year trials were carried out in which the CC was a barley / vetch (Hordeum vulgare L. /Vicia sp.) mixture. Another two-year trial was performed, but located in a long-term CC experiment. The trials were located in Aranjuez (Madrid), under semiarid Mediterranean climate. The commercial summer crops were corn (Zea mays L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). In other work, the water and nutrient balance model WAVE was calibrated and validated. Subsequently, it allowed to evaluate different CC scenarios in current climate conditions and climate change conditions. In one trial, the CC termination date delay led to a greater surface mulch amount and more resistant to decomposition. The CC showed their nutrient recycling ability that was enhanced by a late termination date. However, this late date led to a greater soil nutrients depletion, and to a greater soil water depletion that was not compensated by a reduction in evaporation. The modeling work confirmed the pre-emptive competition of CC with the commercial crop that can be aggravated with a late termination, and can be harmful in low soil water and nutrient availability scenarios. In addition, under climate change conditions, CC enhanced the leaching control while maintaining the levels of competition with the commercial crop. In the trial integrated within the long-term experiment, both CC species reduced weed density compared to fallow in spring. However, the termination date only had an impact on one of the years, in which a late date meant a weed emergency delay. On the other hand, the weed seed bank performed after 10 years of CC rotation confirmed the control of CC over some weed species (e.g. Xanthium spinosum L.), but warned that the weed control by CC is incomplete, so they must be used as a tool in integrated management. The use of roller-crimper as a termination method left the CC residue as mulch and allowed to preserve soil moisture in spring and to control weeds in summer compared to the residue incorporation method. The roller-crimper use without glyphosate was ineffective one of the two years leading to a lower corn yield. The second year, results suggested that the roller-crimper use would save summer postemergency labors because it was less dependent on them than the residue incorporation method to get a competitive yield and high N use efficiency values. The N contained in the CC residue in the soil after corn harvest suggested that the CC termination methods leaving the residue on the surface must take into account the use of that residual N to avoid leaching during the fall period. The CC can reduce the energy consumption compared to a conventional system if they allow a reduction in the fertilization dose for the commercial crop. In comparison with the residue incorporation method, the roller-crimper use resulted in a 43% lower energy consumption due to the decrease in tillage operations. This fertilizer saving can lead as well to a lower total economic cost. The choice of labors that reduce the herbicides use would result in economic savings and reduce the risks associated with excessive use of agrochemicals. The ineffective termination by the roller-crimper without glyphosate is a management that led to a greater risk in the return of net benefits compared to other CC termination methods.

El reemplazo del tradicional barbecho de otoño-invierno por cultivos cubierta (CC) ha permitido la obtención de beneficios tanto a nivel de suelo como a nivel del cultivo principal. El estudio de la actividad microbiológica es un factor muy importante para llegar a comprender las interacciones suelo-planta y poder prever los cambios que se produzcan a corto plazo debido a las modificaciones en el manejo del sistema agrícola. La investigación se ha llevado a cabo en dos zonas de clima y suelos contrastados, una en España bajo condiciones mediterráneas y otra en Holanda bajo clima oceánico templado. La mayor parte del trabajo se ha realizado en un ensayo de campo de larga duración en Aranjuez (Madrid) con clima Mediterráneo semiárido. El ensayo se estableció en 2006 bajo condiciones de mínimo laboreo, en un suelo básico con signos de degradación producidos por el empleo continuado de laboreo convencional y monocultivo de maíz propio de la zona. Los tratamiento de invierno fueron: cebada (Hordeum vulgare L.), veza (Vicia villosa L. o V. sativa L.) y suelo desnudo como control. Durante los meses de verano, los cultivos principales fueron maíz (Zea mays L.) o girasol (Helianthus annuus L.) en regadío. Para evaluar los cambios en la calidad biológica del suelo en respuesta al nuevo manejo se decidió, por un lado analizar la evolución a largo plazo de una serie de parámetros biológicos y por otro lado se realizó un estudio detallado de la actividad de los hongos micorrícicos arbusculares (HMA) en suelo y planta. En la primera parte se seleccionaron un conjunto de indicadores biológicos relacionados con la calidad del suelo para evaluar el efecto de los CC durante los diez años del ensayo de campo. Se determinaron actividades enzimáticas del suelo, C de la biomasa microbiana, las fracciones fácilmente extraíble y la total de la glomalina, respiración del suelo, así como el contenido en C orgánico. En la segunda parte, se estudió el efecto que producían los CC en la actividad de los HMA durante el siguiente cultivo en las variables directamente relacionadas con los HMA: colonización micorrícica, longitud del micelio externo y número de esporas. Además, también se analizaron otras dos variables que están relacionadas de una manera más indirecta con los HMA: la fracción fácilmente extraíble de la glomalina y la actividad de la β-glucosaminidasa. Durante el desarrollo del cultivo principal también se obtuvieron parámetros nutricionales en el suelo (P disponible) y en planta (concentración de N, P y C), así como medidas de altura de la planta y rendimiento. Estos parámetros se midieron durante varias fechas para evaluar la duración de los efectos positivos de los CC a lo largo el crecimiento del cultivo principal. El efecto en la colonización micorrícica de las raíces del cultivo principal es distinto dependiendo de si el CC es una leguminosa, una gramínea o una crucífera. Las mayoría de las especies de esta última familia no pueden formar asociaciones micorrícicas debido a sustancias antifúngicas presentes en las raíces. Así pues, la micorrización podrá variar dependiendo de las distintas especies de CC, condiciones climáticas, tipo de suelo y también de los propios cultivos en los que se esté analizando. Por ello, en un segundo ensayo de campo bajo condiciones propias de un clima oceánico templado, se estudió el legado de varios CC en la colonización micorrícica de las raíces de dos cultivos principales, avena (Avena sativa L.) y endivia (Cichorium endivia L.). Los tratamientos de invierno fueron: monocultivos de rábano (Raphanus sativus L.), veza (V. sativa L.), trébol (Trifolium repens L.) y raigrás (Lolium perenne L.), mezclas de rábano+veza y raigrás+trébol y suelo desnudo. En el ensayo de larga duración, los parámetros biológicos y el contenido en C orgánico total del suelo se vieron estimulados con la sustitución del barbecho por los CC. Las fracciones fácilmente extraíble y total de la glomalina fueron parámetros que respondieron a los dos años tras la introducción de los CC (en el año 2008). A continuación, en el año 2010 se observaron aumentos en las actividades de la β-glucosaminidasa y deshidrogenasa y en la respiración del suelo. El C de la biomasa microbiana no incrementó su contenido tras los CC hasta el 2012, cuando también lo hizo el C orgánico total. La mayoría de los parámetros fueron mayores en los primeros 5 cm del suelo en comparación con la segunda profundidad (5-20 cm). En general, se pudo ver cómo tras la implantación de los CC y el mínimo laboreo en el 2006, los indicadores bioquímicos de calidad del suelo fueron mejorando con el paso de los años bajo condiciones de clima Mediterráneo. La velocidad de respuesta de dichos parámetros fue muy diferente y el efecto llegó a ser más notable en la capa superficial. La actividad micorrícica en el ensayo en clima Mediterráneo se vio afectada por el uso de CC. En las dos campañas de maíz (2012-2013 y 2013-2014), la cebada consiguió incrementar un 19% la colonización micorrícica en el maíz, un 85% la longitud de las hifas y un 64% el número de esporas respecto al suelo desnudo. La veza en cambio no mostró mejoras en la mayoría de los parámetros micorrícicos. La fracción fácilmente extraíble de la glomalina obtuvo fuertes correlaciones con las variables directamente relacionadas con los HMA, lo que ha motivado su inclusión como un indicador más de la actividad micorrícica. Ambos CC contribuyeron a una mejora de la estabilidad de agregados debido en parte a los incrementos en la longitud de hifas y a la glomalina. El aumento de la actividad de los HMA encontrado en el tratamiento de la cebada condujo a incrementos en la concentración de P en la planta del maíz durante las primeras etapas de desarrollo. Fue el tratamiento de la veza el que mostró una mayor concentración en N en planta y actividades enzimáticas más elevadas de la β-glucosaminidasa y la fosfatasa. El estudio de las variables micorrícicas en varias fechas durante el crecimiento del maíz mostró que la colonización micorrícica fue el parámetro más afectado por la fecha de muestreo mientras que el resto de parámetros mantuvieron las diferencias entre tratamientos a lo largo del tiempo. En el ensayo en clima templado, se obtuvieron similares resultados que en el ensayo en clima mediterráneo respecto a la colonización micorrícica entre gramíneas, leguminosas y suelo desnudo. Es decir, la gramínea estimuló la micorrización en los cultivos principales mientras que las leguminosas no se diferenciaron del suelo desnudo. En general, los tratamientos de raigrás y la mezcla raigrás+trébol tuvieron las colonizaciones más altas en comparación con el resto de tratamientos (un 60% más alto en el caso de la avena y 188% en la endivia comparado con el suelo desnudo). En la combinación de raigrás+trébol no se notó ninguna mejora en la micorrización comparado con el monocultivo de raigrás, a pesar de ser una mezcla gramínea-leguminosa. En las raíces de la avena se observó que el rábano produjo un efecto negativo en la colonización, disminuyendo un 5 1% en comparación con el suelo desnudo. La incorporación de la leguminosa en la mezcla rábano+veza tampoco llegó a contrarrestar los efecto negativos del rábano (49% menor que el suelo desnudo). La sustitución del barbecho por los CC junto con una reducción en el laboreo comprende una buena práctica agrícola que puede mitigar, e incluso revertir, el efecto negativo derivado de la intensificación agrícola. Con este trabajo se demuestra que parte de los beneficios proporcionados por los CC en la calidad del suelo y crecimiento de la planta son debidos a la mejora de los parámetros biológicos, particularmente debido a la estimulación de los HMA. ABSTRACT Replacing the traditional fall-winter fallow with cover crop (CC) contributes to benefit both soil and the subsequent plant systems. The study of soil microbial activity is an important aspect to understand soil-plant interactions and to monitor the effect produced by changes of management practice in a short term. The research was carried out in two areas with different climates and soil characteristics. The first area was in Spain under Mediterranean conditions and the second in The Netherlands with a temperate oceanic climate. The main study for this work was carried out in a long-term field experiment in Aranjuez (Madrid) with a Mediterranean semiarid climate. The trial was established in 2006 with minimum tillage in an area with an alkaline soil and symptoms of soil degradation due to conventional tillage and maize monoculture, which are common practices in the area. The winter treatments were: barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), vetch (Vicia villosa L. or V. sativa L.) and fallow. During the summer, the main crops were maize (Zea mays L.) or sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). The biological soil quality indicators were evaluated on the one hand through a selection of soil biological parameters over the years, and on the other hand through a detailed study of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the soil and plants. In the first stage, different biological indicators were selected to evaluate the CC effect during the long-term field experiment (10 years). Enzymatic activities, microbial biomass C, both easily extractable and total glomalin fractions were evaluated in the soil along with soil respiration and also the total organic C content. In the second stage, the CC effect on the AMF activity in the subsequent main crop was studied in variables directly related to AMF: mycorrhizal colonization, length of hyphae and AMF spores. In addition, there were other two variables indirectly related to AMF: the easily extractable glomalin-related soil protein and the β-glucosaminidase activity. Nutritional parameters in the soil (available P) and plant (N, P and C concentrations) and maize height were obtained during the main crop, and yield at harvest. Those parameters were measured to monitor the positive CC effect in several sampling dates during the main crop growth. Cover crop species affect the mycorrhizal activity in different ways in the subsequent main crop. Legumes and grasses are common AMF hosts, but there are other species that cannot form mycorrhizal symbiosis, such as crucifers. Mycorrhizal colonization might vary depending on the different CC species used, climatic and soil conditions and also on the main subsequent crop. Therefore, the legacy of different CC on the AMF colonization in two subsequent crops was studied in a second field experiment under temperate oceanic climate. The winter treatments were: fallow, perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), white clover (Trifolium repens L.), vetch (V. sativa L.) and radish (Raphanus sativus L.), and the mixtures ryegrass+clover and radish+vetch. The mycorrhizal colonization was studied in the roots of two main crops: oat (Avena sativa L.) and endive (Cichorium endivia L.). In the long-term experiment, the biological parameters and total organic C content were stimulated by the CC treatments. Both easily extractable and total glomalin fractions were the parameters earlier enhanced by CC (in 2008). Then, β- glucosaminidase and dehydrogenase activities and soil respiration showed improvements in 2010. Microbial biomass C did not show earlier increments than total organic C, both parameters were improved by both CC in 2012. Most of the parameters were higher in the first 5 cm depth compared with the second layer (5- 20 cm). Overall, after CC and minimum tillage establishment in 2006, the biological parameters related to soil quality increased through the long-term experiment under Mediterranean conditions. The response of these parameters was different and the effect was more notable in the upper layer. The mycorrhizal activity was affected by the CC used in the Mediterranean long-term experiment. In the two maize campaigns (2012-2013 y 2013-2014), barley improved the mycorrhizal colonization in maize by 19%, the length hyphae 85% and the AMF spores 64% compared with fallow. The vetch treatment, on the contrary, did not enhance most of the AMF parameters. The easily extractable glomalin fraction was correlated with the variables directly related to AMF, which contributed to include it as a variable directly related to AMF. Both CC contributed to improve the aggregate stability, due to increments in the length hyphae and glomalin content. The AMF stimulation by the barley CC enhanced shoot P concentration in the maize crop during the first growth stages. The vetch treatment had the highest shoot N concentration in maize plants and also β- glucosaminidase and phosphatase activities. The study of AMF parameters during various sampling dates showed that the mycorrhizal colonization was the parameter more sensitive to time. The differences on the other AMF parameters were constant over the time. In the study under temperate oceanic climate, similar results were obtained compared with the Mediterranean experiment. Differences on mycorrhizal colonization between grasses, legumes and fallow were similar in both trials. That means that the grass stimulated the micorrhization in both main crops while the legumes showed no differences with fallow. Overall, ryegrass and ryegrass+clover treatments had the highest colonization compared with the other treatments (increments of 60% in oat and 188% in endive compared with fallow). The mixture ryegrass+clover showed no improvements in the mycorrhizal colonization compared with ryegrass monoculture, despite being a grass-legume combination. In the oat roots, the radish CC negatively affected the mycorrhizal colonization, decreasing by 51% compared with fallow. The mixture radish+vetch did not counterbalance the negative effect of radish (49% lower than fallow). The replacement of fallow by CC together with tillage reduction constitutes good agricultural practice that can mitigate and even reverse negative effect derived from the intensification of cropping systems. This study demonstrates that part of the benefits provided by CC in soil quality and plant growth is through biological parameters enhancement and particularly via AMF stimulation.

Los modelos de simulación de cultivos permiten analizar varias combinaciones de laboreo-rotación y explorar escenarios de manejo. El modelo DSSAT fue evaluado bajo condiciones de secano en un experimento de campo de 16 años en la semiárida España central. Se evaluó el efecto del sistema de laboreo y las rotaciones basadas en cereales de invierno, en el rendimiento del cultivo y la calidad del suelo. Los modelos CERES y CROPGRO se utilizaron para simular el crecimiento y rendimiento del cultivo, mientras que el modelo DSSAT CENTURY se utilizó en las simulaciones de SOC y SN. Tanto las observaciones de campo como las simulaciones con CERES-Barley, mostraron que el rendimiento en grano de la cebada era mas bajo para el cereal continuo (BB) que para las rotaciones de veza (VB) y barbecho (FB) en ambos sistemas de laboreo. El modelo predijo más nitrógeno disponible en el laboreo convencional (CT) que en el no laboreo (NT) conduciendo a un mayor rendimiento en el CT. El SOC y el SN en la capa superficial del suelo, fueron mayores en NT que en CT, y disminuyeron con la profundidad en los valores tanto observados como simulados. Las mejores combinaciones para las condiciones de secano estudiadas fueron CT-VB y CT-FB, pero CT presentó menor contenido en SN y SOC que NT. El efecto beneficioso del NT en SOC y SN bajo condiciones Mediterráneas semiáridas puede ser identificado por observaciones de campo y por simulaciones de modelos de cultivos. La simulación del balance de agua en sistemas de cultivo es una herramienta útil para estudiar como el agua puede ser utilizado eficientemente. La comparación del balance de agua de DSSAT , con una simple aproximación “tipping bucket”, con el modelo WAVE más mecanicista, el cual integra la ecuación de Richard , es un potente método para valorar el funcionamiento del modelo. Los parámetros de suelo fueron calibrados usando el método de optimización global Simulated Annealing (SA). Un lisímetro continuo de pesada en suelo desnudo suministró los valores observados de drenaje y evapotranspiración (ET) mientras que el contenido de agua en el suelo (SW) fue suministrado por sensores de capacitancia. Ambos modelos funcionaron bien después de la optimización de los parámetros de suelo con SA, simulando el balance de agua en el suelo para el período de calibración. Para el período de validación, los modelos optimizados predijeron bien el contenido de agua en el suelo y la evaporación del suelo a lo largo del tiempo. Sin embargo, el drenaje fue predicho mejor con WAVE que con DSSAT, el cual presentó mayores errores en los valores acumulados. Esto podría ser debido a la naturaleza mecanicista de WAVE frente a la naturaleza más funcional de DSSAT. Los buenos resultados de WAVE indican que, después de la calibración, este puede ser utilizado como "benchmark" para otros modelos para periodos en los que no haya medidas de campo del drenaje. El funcionamiento de DSSAT-CENTURY en la simulación de SOC y N depende fuertemente del proceso de inicialización. Se propuso como método alternativo (Met.2) la inicialización de las fracciones de SOC a partir de medidas de mineralización aparente del suelo (Napmin). El Met.2 se comparó con el método de inicialización de Basso et al. (2011) (Met.1), aplicando ambos métodos a un experimento de campo de 4 años en un área en regadío de España central. Nmin y Napmin fueron sobreestimados con el Met.1, ya que la fracción estable obtenida (SOC3) en las capas superficiales del suelo fue más baja que con Met.2. El N lixiviado simulado fue similar en los dos métodos, con buenos resultados en los tratamientos de barbecho y cebada. El Met.1 subestimó el SOC en la capa superficial del suelo cuando se comparó con una serie observada de 12 años. El crecimiento y rendimiento del cultivo fueron adecuadamente simulados con ambos métodos, pero el N en la parte aérea de la planta y en el grano fueron sobreestimados con el Met.1. Los resultados variaron significativamente con las fracciones iniciales de SOC, resaltando la importancia del método de inicialización. El Met.2 ofrece una alternativa para la inicialización del modelo CENTURY, mejorando la simulación de procesos de N en el suelo. La continua emergencia de nuevas variedades de híbridos modernos de maíz limita la aplicación de modelos de simulación de cultivos, ya que estos nuevos híbridos necesitan ser calibrados en el campo para ser adecuados para su uso en los modelos. El desarrollo de relaciones basadas en la duración del ciclo, simplificaría los requerimientos de calibración facilitando la rápida incorporación de nuevos cultivares en DSSAT. Seis híbridos de maiz (FAO 300 hasta FAO 700) fueron cultivados en un experimento de campo de dos años en un área semiárida de regadío en España central. Los coeficientes genéticos fueron obtenidos secuencialmente, comenzando con los parámetros de desarrollo fenológico (P1, P2, P5 and PHINT), seguido de los parámetros de crecimiento del cultivo (G2 and G3). Se continuó el procedimiento hasta que la salida de las simulaciones estuvo en concordancia con las observaciones fenológicas de campo. Después de la calibración, los parámetros simulados se ajustaron bien a los parámetros observados, con bajos RMSE en todos los casos. Los P1 y P5 calibrados, incrementaron con la duración del ciclo. P1 fue una función lineal del tiempo térmico (TT) desde emergencia hasta floración y P5 estuvo linealmente relacionada con el TT desde floración a madurez. No hubo diferencias significativas en PHINT entre híbridos de FAO-500 a 700 , ya que tuvieron un número de hojas similar. Como los coeficientes fenológicos estuvieron directamente relacionados con la duración del ciclo, sería posible desarrollar rangos y correlaciones que permitan estimar dichos coeficientes a partir de la clasificación del ciclo. ABSTRACT Crop simulation models allow analyzing various tillage-rotation combinations and exploring management scenarios. DSSAT model was tested under rainfed conditions in a 16-year field experiment in semiarid central Spain. The effect of tillage system and winter cereal-based rotations on the crop yield and soil quality was evaluated. The CERES and CROPGRO models were used to simulate crop growth and yield, while the DSSAT CENTURY was used in the SOC and SN simulations. Both field observations and CERES-Barley simulations, showed that barley grain yield was lower for continuous cereal (BB) than for vetch (VB) and fallow (FB) rotations for both tillage systems. The model predicted higher nitrogen availability in the conventional tillage (CT) than in the no tillage (NT) leading to a higher yield in the CT. The SOC and SN in the top layer, were higher in NT than in CT, and decreased with depth in both simulated and observed values. The best combinations for the dry land conditions studied were CT-VB and CT-FB, but CT presented lower SN and SOC content than NT. The beneficial effect of NT on SOC and SN under semiarid Mediterranean conditions can be identified by field observations and by crop model simulations. The simulation of the water balance in cropping systems is a useful tool to study how water can be used efficiently. The comparison of DSSAT soil water balance, with a simpler “tipping bucket” approach, with the more mechanistic WAVE model, which integrates Richard’s equation, is a powerful method to assess model performance. The soil parameters were calibrated by using the Simulated Annealing (SA) global optimizing method. A continuous weighing lysimeter in a bare fallow provided the observed values of drainage and evapotranspiration (ET) while soil water content (SW) was supplied by capacitance sensors. Both models performed well after optimizing soil parameters with SA, simulating the soil water balance components for the calibrated period. For the validation period, the optimized models predicted well soil water content and soil evaporation over time. However, drainage was predicted better by WAVE than by DSSAT, which presented larger errors in the cumulative values. That could be due to the mechanistic nature of WAVE against the more functional nature of DSSAT. The good results from WAVE indicate that, after calibration, it could be used as benchmark for other models for periods when no drainage field measurements are available. The performance of DSSAT-CENTURY when simulating SOC and N strongly depends on the initialization process. Initialization of the SOC pools from apparent soil N mineralization (Napmin) measurements was proposed as alternative method (Met.2). Method 2 was compared to the Basso et al. (2011) initialization method (Met.1), by applying both methods to a 4-year field experiment in a irrigated area of central Spain. Nmin and Napmin were overestimated by Met.1, since the obtained stable pool (SOC3) in the upper layers was lower than from Met.2. Simulated N leaching was similar for both methods, with good results in fallow and barley treatments. Method 1 underestimated topsoil SOC when compared with a 12-year observed serial. Crop growth and yield were properly simulated by both methods, but N in shoots and grain were overestimated by Met.1. Results varied significantly with the initial SOC pools, highlighting the importance of the initialization procedure. Method 2 offers an alternative to initialize the CENTURY model, enhancing the simulation of soil N processes. The continuous emergence of new varieties of modern maize hybrids limits the application of crop simulation models, since these new hybrids should be calibrated in the field to be suitable for model use. The development of relationships based on the cycle duration, would simplify the calibration requirements facilitating the rapid incorporation of new cultivars into DSSAT. Six maize hybrids (FAO 300 through FAO 700) were grown in a 2-year field experiment in a semiarid irrigated area of central Spain. Genetic coefficients were obtained sequentially, starting with the phenological development parameters (P1, P2, P5 and PHINT), followed by the crop growth parameters (G2 and G3). The procedure was continued until the simulated outputs were in good agreement with the field phenological observations. After calibration, simulated parameters matched observed parameters well, with low RMSE in most cases. The calibrated P1 and P5 increased with the duration of the cycle. P1 was a linear function of the thermal time (TT) from emergence to silking and P5 was linearly related with the TT from silking to maturity . There were no significant differences in PHINT between hybrids from FAO-500 to 700 , as they had similar leaf number. Since phenological coefficients were directly related with the cycle duration, it would be possible to develop ranges and correlations which allow to estimate such coefficients from the cycle classification.

La caracterización de los cultivos cubierta (cover crops) puede permitir comparar la idoneidad de diferentes especies para proporcionar servicios ecológicos como el control de la erosión, el reciclado de nutrientes o la producción de forrajes. En este trabajo se estudiaron bajo condiciones de campo diferentes técnicas para caracterizar el dosel vegetal con objeto de establecer una metodología para medir y comparar las arquitecturas de los cultivos cubierta más comunes. Se estableció un ensayo de campo en Madrid (España central) para determinar la relación entre el índice de área foliar (LAI) y la cobertura del suelo (GC) para un cultivo de gramínea, uno de leguminosa y uno de crucífera. Para ello se sembraron doce parcelas con cebada (Hordeum vulgare L.), veza (Vicia sativa L.), y colza (Brassica napus L.). En 10 fechas de muestreo se midieron el LAI (con estimaciones directas y del LAI-2000), la fracción interceptada de la radiación fotosintéticamente activa (FIPAR) y la GC. Un experimento de campo de dos años (Octubre-Abril) se estableció en la misma localización para evaluar diferentes especies (Hordeum vulgare L., Secale cereale L., x Triticosecale Whim, Sinapis alba L., Vicia sativa L.) y cultivares (20) en relación con su idoneidad para ser usadas como cultivos cubierta. La GC se monitorizó mediante análisis de imágenes digitales con 21 y 22 muestreos, y la biomasa se midió 8 y 10 veces, respectivamente para cada año. Un modelo de Gompertz caracterizó la cobertura del suelo hasta el decaimiento observado tras las heladas, mientras que la biomasa se ajustó a ecuaciones de Gompertz, logísticas y lineales-exponenciales. Al final del experimento se determinaron el C, el N y el contenido en fibra (neutrodetergente, ácidodetergente y lignina), así como el N fijado por las leguminosas. Se aplicó el análisis de decisión multicriterio (MCDA) con objeto de obtener un ranking de especies y cultivares de acuerdo con su idoneidad para actuar como cultivos cubierta en cuatro modalidades diferentes: cultivo de cobertura, cultivo captura, abono verde y forraje. Las asociaciones de cultivos leguminosas con no leguminosas pueden afectar al crecimiento radicular y a la absorción de N de ambos componentes de la mezcla. El conocimiento de cómo los sistemas radiculares específicos afectan al crecimiento individual de las especies es útil para entender las interacciones en las asociaciones, así como para planificar estrategias de cultivos cubierta. En un tercer ensayo se combinaron estudios en rhizotrones con extracción de raíces e identificación de especies por microscopía, así como con estudios de crecimiento, absorción de N y 15N en capas profundas del suelo. Las interacciones entre raíces en su crecimiento y en el aprovisionamiento de N se estudiaron para dos de los cultivares mejor valorados en el estudio previo: uno de cebada (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Hispanic) y otro de veza (Vicia sativa L. cv. Aitana). Se añadió N en dosis de 0 (N0), 50 (N1) y 150 (N2) kg N ha-1. Como resultados del primer estudio, se ajustaron correctamente modelos lineales y cuadráticos a la relación entre la GC y el LAI para todos los cultivos, pero en la gramínea alcanzaron una meseta para un LAI>4. Antes de alcanzar la cobertura total, la pendiente de la relación lineal entre ambas variables se situó en un rango entre 0.025 y 0.030. Las lecturas del LAI-2000 estuvieron correlacionadas linealmente con el LAI, aunque con tendencia a la sobreestimación. Las correcciones basadas en el efecto de aglutinación redujeron el error cuadrático medio del LAI estimado por el LAI-2000 desde 1.2 hasta 0.5 para la crucífera y la leguminosa, no siendo efectivas para la cebada. Esto determinó que para los siguientes estudios se midieran únicamente la GC y la biomasa. En el segundo experimento, las gramíneas alcanzaron la mayor cobertura del suelo (83-99%) y la mayor biomasa (1226-1928 g m-2) al final del mismo. Con la mayor relación C/N (27-39) y contenido en fibra digestible (53-60%) y la menor calidad de residuo (~68%). La mostaza presentó elevadas GC, biomasa y absorción de N en el año más templado en similitud con las gramíneas, aunque escasa calidad como forraje en ambos años. La veza presentó la menor absorción de N (2.4-0.7 g N m-2) debido a la fijación de N (9.8-1.6 g N m-2) y escasa acumulación de N. El tiempo térmico hasta alcanzar el 30% de GC constituyó un buen indicador de especies de rápida cubrición. La cuantificación de las variables permitió hallar variabilidad entre las especies y proporcionó información para posteriores decisiones sobre la selección y manejo de los cultivos cubierta. La agregación de dichas variables a través de funciones de utilidad permitió confeccionar rankings de especies y cultivares para cada uso. Las gramíneas fueron las más indicadas para los usos de cultivo de cobertura, cultivo captura y forraje, mientras que las vezas fueron las mejor como abono verde. La mostaza alcanzó altos valores como cultivo de cobertura y captura en el primer año, pero el segundo decayó debido a su pobre actuación en los inviernos fríos. Hispanic fue el mejor cultivar de cebada como cultivo de cobertura y captura, mientras que Albacete como forraje. El triticale Titania alcanzó la posición más alta como cultiva de cobertura, captura y forraje. Las vezas Aitana y BGE014897 mostraron buenas aptitudes como abono verde y cultivo captura. El MCDA permitió la comparación entre especies y cultivares proporcionando información relevante para la selección y manejo de cultivos cubierta. En el estudio en rhizotrones tanto la mezcla de especies como la cebada alcanzaron mayor intensidad de raíces (RI) y profundidad (RD) que la veza, con valores alrededor de 150 cruces m-1 y 1.4 m respectivamente, comparados con 50 cruces m-1 y 0.9 m para la veza. En las capas más profundas del suelo, la asociación de cultivos mostró valores de RI ligeramente mayores que la cebada en monocultivo. La cebada y la asociación obtuvieron mayores valores de densidad de raíces (RLD) (200-600 m m-3) que la veza (25-130) entre 0.8 y 1.2 m de profundidad. Los niveles de N no mostraron efectos claros en RI, RD ó RLD, sin embargo, el incremento de N favoreció la proliferación de raíces de veza en la asociación en capas profundas del suelo, con un ratio cebada/veza situado entre 25 a N0 y 5 a N2. La absorción de N de la cebada se incrementó en la asociación a expensas de la veza (de ~100 a 200 mg planta-1). Las raíces de cebada en la asociación absorbieron también más nitrógeno marcado de las capas profundas del suelo (0.6 mg 15N planta-1) que en el monocultivo (0.3 mg 15N planta-1). ABSTRACT Cover crop characterization may allow comparing the suitability of different species to provide ecological services such as erosion control, nutrient recycling or fodder production. Different techniques to characterize plant canopy were studied under field conditions in order to establish a methodology for measuring and comparing cover crops canopies. A field trial was established in Madrid (central Spain) to determine the relationship between leaf area index (LAI) and ground cover (GC) in a grass, a legume and a crucifer crop. Twelve plots were sown with either barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), vetch (Vicia sativa L.), or rape (Brassica napus L.). On 10 sampling dates the LAI (both direct and LAI-2000 estimations), fraction intercepted of photosynthetically active radiation (FIPAR) and GC were measured. A two-year field experiment (October-April) was established in the same location to evaluate different species (Hordeum vulgare L., Secale cereale L., x Triticosecale Whim, Sinapis alba L., Vicia sativa L.) and cultivars (20) according to their suitability to be used as cover crops. GC was monitored through digital image analysis with 21 and 22 samples, and biomass measured 8 and 10 times, respectively for each season. A Gompertz model characterized ground cover until the decay observed after frosts, while biomass was fitted to Gompertz, logistic and linear-exponential equations. At the end of the experiment C, N, and fiber (neutral detergent, acid and lignin) contents, and the N fixed by the legumes were determined. Multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) was applied in order to rank the species and cultivars according to their suitability to perform as cover crops in four different modalities: cover crop, catch crop, green manure and fodder. Intercropping legumes and non-legumes may affect the root growth and N uptake of both components in the mixture. The knowledge of how specific root systems affect the growth of the individual species is useful for understanding the interactions in intercrops as well as for planning cover cropping strategies. In a third trial rhizotron studies were combined with root extraction and species identification by microscopy and with studies of growth, N uptake and 15N uptake from deeper soil layers. The root interactions of root growth and N foraging were studied for two of the best ranked cultivars in the previous study: a barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Hispanic) and a vetch (Vicia sativa L. cv. Aitana). N was added at 0 (N0), 50 (N1) and 150 (N2) kg N ha-1. As a result, linear and quadratic models fitted to the relationship between the GC and LAI for all of the crops, but they reached a plateau in the grass when the LAI > 4. Before reaching full cover, the slope of the linear relationship between both variables was within the range of 0.025 to 0.030. The LAI-2000 readings were linearly correlated with the LAI but they tended to overestimation. Corrections based on the clumping effect reduced the root mean square error of the estimated LAI from the LAI-2000 readings from 1.2 to less than 0.50 for the crucifer and the legume, but were not effective for barley. This determined that in the following studies only the GC and biomass were measured. In the second experiment, the grasses reached the highest ground cover (83- 99%) and biomass (1226-1928 g/m2) at the end of the experiment. The grasses had the highest C/N ratio (27-39) and dietary fiber (53-60%) and the lowest residue quality (~68%). The mustard presented high GC, biomass and N uptake in the warmer year with similarity to grasses, but low fodder capability in both years. The vetch presented the lowest N uptake (2.4-0.7 g N/m2) due to N fixation (9.8-1.6 g N/m2) and low biomass accumulation. The thermal time until reaching 30% ground cover was a good indicator of early coverage species. Variable quantification allowed finding variability among the species and provided information for further decisions involving cover crops selection and management. Aggregation of these variables through utility functions allowed ranking species and cultivars for each usage. Grasses were the most suitable for the cover crop, catch crop and fodder uses, while the vetches were the best as green manures. The mustard attained high ranks as cover and catch crop the first season, but the second decayed due to low performance in cold winters. Hispanic was the most suitable barley cultivar as cover and catch crop, and Albacete as fodder. The triticale Titania attained the highest rank as cover and catch crop and fodder. Vetches Aitana and BGE014897 showed good aptitudes as green manures and catch crops. MCDA allowed comparison among species and cultivars and might provide relevant information for cover crops selection and management. In the rhizotron study the intercrop and the barley attained slightly higher root intensity (RI) and root depth (RD) than the vetch, with values around 150 crosses m-1 and 1.4 m respectively, compared to 50 crosses m-1 and 0.9 m for the vetch. At deep soil layers, intercropping showed slightly larger RI values compared to the sole cropped barley. The barley and the intercropping had larger root length density (RLD) values (200-600 m m-3) than the vetch (25-130) at 0.8-1.2 m depth. The topsoil N supply did not show a clear effect on the RI, RD or RLD; however increasing topsoil N favored the proliferation of vetch roots in the intercropping at deep soil layers, with the barley/vetch root ratio ranging from 25 at N0 to 5 at N2. The N uptake of the barley was enhanced in the intercropping at the expense of the vetch (from ~100 mg plant-1 to 200). The intercropped barley roots took up more labeled nitrogen (0.6 mg 15N plant-1) than the sole-cropped barley roots (0.3 mg 15N plant-1) from deep layers.
