Objective: The aim of this observational study was to compare the chewing patterns of children with unilateral Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) to those of children without MIH and to assess how the MIH severity influences the risk of chewing deviation. The hypothesis was that children with unilateral MIH would prefer to chew on the side opposite the defect., Methods: A total of 121 children were included in this investigation and evaluated for their preferred chewing side (PCS). This study population comprised 45 children with unilateral mild MIH (G1), 42 with unilateral severe MIH (G2), and 34 children in the control group (CG) who had no MIH but presented with unilateral chewing complaints., Results: The PCS pattern differed among the groups, with 31% of the children with MIH and 55.9% of the CG showing bilateral chewing. The chewing deviation prevalence was 24% in the CG and 52% in G2 (χ2 test; p = 0.03). Binomial logistic regression analysis revealed that both severities of MIH influenced the likelihood of chewing deviation (χ2 = 7.33, p = 0.026). Children with unilateral severe MIH were 3.57 times more likely to exhibit chewing deviation than were those without MIH., Conclusions: The null hypothesis was rejected, indicating that unilateral MIH affects children's masticatory patterns, increasing the risk of chewing deviation., Clinical Relevance: Unilateral chewing may be associated with various health issues, such as temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), decreased hearing, and vision problems. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate outpatient and inpatient dental care for patients with disabilities from 2014 to 2023., Material and Methods: A time series analysis was carried out with data from Brazil's public healthcare system, considering the outpatient productivity of Special Needs Dentistry specialists and hospitalizations (inpatient admissions) of patients with disabilities for dental procedures, both normalized to every 100,000 inhabitants (incidence). The significance level was set at 5%., Results: In the last 10 years, 22,420,859 procedures were carried out and 89,380 hospitalizations were approved. Trend analysis showed no significant temporal variation in the incidence of both variables. Regarding the procedures, the majority were low-complexity (82.1%, p < .001) and clinical (71.2%, p < .001). Periodontal (19.9%) and restorative (19.5%) procedures were the most frequent. Considering the hospitalizations, almost (R$) 40 million was allocated, and the majority were classified as elective (71.9%, p = .002) and of short duration (less than a day)., Conclusion: Dental care for patients with disabilities presented patterns related to the types of procedures, complexity and circumstance, in addition to not showing significant temporal variation over the last 10 years., (© 2024 Special Care Dentistry Association and Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Aims: This systematic review aimed to assess the impact of oral health training for caregivers of individuals with disabilities., Materials and Methods: A systematic review was conducted using five electronic databases: Medline (PubMed), SciELO, Web of Science, LILACS, and CAFe, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. The PICO strategy was defined as follows: Participants: caregivers of individuals with disabilities; Intervention: training or education in oral health for caregivers; Control: no caregiver training; and Outcomes: evaluating whether oral health training for caregivers improves the oral health of people with disabilities. The study aimed to address the research question: "What is the impact of oral health training for caregivers of individuals with disabilities?" The study was preregistered in PROSPERO (CRD42023416760)., Results: A total of 14 studies were included, with trained caregivers being either staff members or parents, and various disabilities reported, with cerebral palsy being the most prevalent. Caregiver training methods varied, such as instructions on the importance of oral health care, supervised oral hygiene, and demonstration of toothbrushing techniques. Overall, the intervention groups showed an improvement in measures such as to the Gingival Index, Plaque Index, Simplified Oral Hygiene Index, and Gingival Bleeding Index on upon probing. Additionally, improvements were observed in the quality, frequency, and duration of toothbrushing among intervention groups., Conclusion: The findings suggest that oral health training for caregivers has a positive impact on the oral health of individuals with disabilities, potentially leading to better oral health outcomes., (© 2024 Special Care Dentistry Association and Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of radiotherapy (RT) and chemoradiotherapy (CRT) on the wear and surface roughness of in vitro irradiated human enamel and dentin subjected to abrasive challenge. Enamel and dentin specimens (n = 42) were prepared from teeth donated by healthy patients and those with head and neck cancer who had received radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiotherapy (CRT). The specimens were categorized into three groups: control, RT, and CRT (n = 14 per group for both enamel and dentin). These samples were subjected to an in vitro abrasive experiment using a brushing machine, followed by wear and surface roughness assessments with a confocal laser scanning microscope conducted before and after the abrasive challenge, considering both exposed and non-exposed areas. Statistical analysis used Shapiro-Wilk tests for normality, Wilcoxon tests for comparing two means, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. A significance level of 5% was adopted. In enamel specimens, wear profile values ​​of CRT and RT groups were not different from the control (p > 0.05). The RT group presents lower step values than the CRT and control groups (p < 0.001). No significant difference in final surface roughness was observed in all groups (p > 0.05). In dentin specimens, no significant difference in wear profile and step was observed in all groups (p > 0.05). However, CRT and RT groups present higher values in final surface roughness (p < 0.001). Purpose: To analyze the functions of the stomatognathic system in children with or without molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH)., Methods: For this cross-sectional study, 72 children aged 6-12 years were recruited and divided in two groups: with MIH (G1) and without MIH (G2). T-SCAN was used to verify the distribution of occlusal contacts, gnathodynamometer to measure maximum molar bite force, and Iowa Oral Pressure Instrument (IOPI) to assess the strength of facial expression muscles. The t test and paired t test (p ≤ 0.05) were used for statistical comparisons., Results: The molars affected by MIH exhibited lower distribution of occlusal forces (p < 0.001) and lower maximum molar bite force (p < 0.05) compared to the molars in the control group. However, there was no difference between the MIH-affected sides compared to the unaffected side, nor between the molars affected by MIH and their antagonists (p > 0.05). There were no differences in the forces of the facial expression muscles between the groups., Conclusions: These findings suggest that MIH significantly impacts occlusal force distribution and bite force, but not facial expression musculature., (© 2024. Natural killer (NK) cells include different subsets with diverse effector capacities that are poorly understood in the context of parasitic diseases. Here, we investigated inhibitory and activating receptor expression on NK cells in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and explored their phenotypic and functional heterogeneity based on CD57 and NKG2C expression. The expression of CD57 identified NK cells that accumulated in CL patients and exhibited features of senescence. The CD57+ cells exhibited heightened levels of the activating receptor NKG2C and diminished expression of the inhibitory receptor NKG2A. RNA sequencing analyses based on NKG2C transcriptome have revealed two distinct profiles among CL patients associated with cytotoxic and functional genes. The CD57+NKG2C+ subset accumulated in the blood of patients and presented conspicuous features of senescence, including the expression of markers such as p16, yH2ax, and p38, as well as reduced proliferative capacity. In addition, they positively correlated with the number of days until lesion resolution. Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative defect of dental enamel characterized by demarcated opacities present in permanent first molars and other teeth. It is considered a major clinical challenge in dentistry because it makes affected teeth more susceptible to fractures and dental caries. Its diagnosis is mainly clinical and there are few technological resources that allow for a more accurate diagnosis, especially with respect to the depth of the defect in the dental enamel. In this context, optical coherence tomography (OCT), which is routinely used in ophthalmology, can produce images of the depth of the dental enamel, making it a promising method. In this study, 33 teeth with different MIH severities were evaluated using OCT and microcomputed tomography (microCT). Semi-quantitative methods of grayscale pattern analysis were used to compare images obtained from different severities of MIH with the mineral density obtained through microCT. MicroCT evaluation revealed that hypomineralized enamel had a significantly lower mineral density than intact enamel. However, this difference was not observed between the mild and severe MIH lesions. In the OCT evaluation, significant differences were observed between the intact and hypomineralized enamel, and the gray value comparison provided a method for quantitative differentiation between the two. This study suggests that OCT could be a useful adjunct to traditional diagnostic methods for MIH, offering a noninvasive approach to evaluate enamel defects. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) can be a tool in the diagnosis and acquisition of knowledge, particularly in dentistry, sparking debates on its application in clinical decision-making., Objective: This study aims to evaluate the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of the responses generated by Chatbot Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) 3.5 in dentistry using expert-formulated questions., Materials and Methods: Experts were invited to create three questions, answers, and respective references according to specialized fields of activity. The Likert scale was used to evaluate agreement levels between experts and ChatGPT responses. Statistical analysis compared descriptive and binary question groups in terms of accuracy and completeness. Questions with low accuracy underwent re-evaluation, and subsequent responses were compared for improvement. The Wilcoxon test was utilized (α = 0.05)., Results: Ten experts across six dental specialties generated 30 binary and descriptive dental questions and references. The accuracy score had a median of 5.50 and a mean of 4.17. For completeness, the median was 2.00 and the mean was 2.07. No difference was observed between descriptive and binary responses for accuracy and completeness. However, re-evaluated responses showed a significant improvement with a significant difference in accuracy (median 5.50 vs. 6.00; mean 4.17 vs. 4.80; p=0.042) and completeness (median 2.0 vs. 2.0; mean 2.07 vs. 2.30; p=0.011). References were more incorrect than correct, with no differences between descriptive and binary questions., Conclusions: ChatGPT initially demonstrated good accuracy and completeness, which was further improved with machine learning (ML) over time. However, some inaccurate answers and references persisted. The purpose of this report is to discuss the case of a four-year-old African-American girl who presented with clinical and radiographic evidence of localized stage III grade C periodontitis. She had no history of systemic disease or caries. Treatment consisted of oral hygiene instructions, extraction of unsalvageable teeth, full-mouth debridement with the use of systemic antibiotics and subsequent periodontal maintenance care. The patient underwent a two-year follow-up, during which the disease was stabilized and no space loss was detected. Although this condition is uncommon, the pediatric dentist must be able to diagnose and treat periodontitis in the primary dentition early, together with a multidisciplinary team, to prevent a recurrence of this disease in the permanent dentition.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of acid challenge on the activation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the Dentinoenamel junction of primary and permanent teeth submitted to radiotherapy. For this purpose, a total of 178 dental fragments obtained from molars were used, and randomly divided into 2 groups (primary and permanent teeth) / 4 experimental subgroups (irradiated and non-irradiated, demineralized and non-demineralized). The fragments were exposed to radiation, with a dose fraction of 2 Gy, for 5 consecutive days, until a total dose of 60 Gy was reached, with a total of 30 cycles, for 6 weeks. To determine the activity of MMPs on the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ), in situ zymography assays on 0.6mm dental fragments were performed. To assess whether MMP activity would be impacted by an acidic environment, the fragments were placed in a demineralizing solution (pH of 4.8). The finding was that irradiation activated MMPs in DEJ and these effects were more evident in permanent when compared with primary teeth. When the effect of an acid challenge on MMPs activity was investigated, demineralization was observed not to increase MMPs activity in non-irradiated teeth, but it did increase MMPs activity in irradiated teeth. In conclusion, an acid challenge was found to exacerbate activation of MMPs in DEJ of permanent teeth submitted to irradiation, but not in primary teeth.

This study aimed to assess the in vitro effects of re-irradiation on enamel and dentin properties, simulating head and neck cancer radiotherapy retreatment. Forty-five human permanent molars were classified into five groups: non-irradiated; irradiated 60 Gy, and re-irradiated with doses of 30, 40, and 50 Gy. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were employed for analysis. Raman spectroscopy assessed intensity, spectral area, and specific peaks comparatively. Statistical analysis involved Kolmogorov-Smirnov and One-Way ANOVA tests, with Tukey's post-test (significance level set at 5%). Significant changes in irradiated, non-irradiated, and re-irradiated enamel peaks were observed, including phosphate (438 nm), hydroxyapatite (582 nm), phosphate (960 nm), and carbonate (1070 nm) (p < 0.05). Re-irradiation affected the entire tooth (p > 0.05), leading to interprismatic region degradation, enamel prism destruction, and hydroxyapatite crystal damage. Dentin exhibited tubule obliteration, crack formation, and progressive collagen fiber fragmentation. EDX revealed increased oxygen percentage and decreased phosphorus and calcium post-reirradiation. It is concluded that chemical and morphological changes in irradiated permanent teeth were dose-dependent, exacerbated by re-irradiation, causing substantial damage in enamel and dentin., (© 2024. Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is a qualitative type of enamel defect, which occurs due to a failure in the biomineralisation process of the enamel organic matrix during amelogenesis. The tooth enamel affected by MIH shows changes in its chemical, structural, and mechanical properties, leading to different clinical repercussions. The color of MIH opacities varies from opaque white to yellow/brown, and elemental analyses of these lesions show a lower calcium and phosphate content, minerals that are more abundant in sound enamel. Furthermore, the incorporation of other molecules occurs, such as carbonate, a component that provides a greater degree of solubility, thus making hypomineralised enamel more susceptible to posteruptive fractures. At a structural level, the layer of hydroxyapatite crystals appears to be disorganized, with morphological changes, implying a greater degree of porosity in the structure. The increase in porosity of the structure may be associated with dental hypersensitivity, a common clinical repercussion among patients with MIH. Among the mechanical properties, a decrease in hardness and modulus of elasticity occurs, and this also makes the enamel more fragile. Deficiency in biomineralisation can be caused by changes in the function of ameloblasts or by failures at the intercellular junction that result in lower activity of proteases such as MMP-20 and KLK4. The increase in proteins in the organic matrix of enamel impairs the growth and incorporation of minerals into the hydroxyapatite crystals, so that the enamel becomes hypomineralised and has larger organic content, thus having an impact on its properties. Purpose: To evaluate descriptively and quantitatively teeth affected by enamel hypomineralization (EH) using optical coherence microtomography (OCT). Methods: Twenty teeth were classified according to the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) index and separated into groups according to the degree of EH severity. For each tooth, scans were performed on both the affected and the non-affected areas, and their corresponding optical images were captured. Results: In the qualitative analyses, in most of the images bright lines were observed in relation to the enamel surface and a high level of photon scattering immediately below the enamel surface. This showed that the shading distribution can be identified as hypomineralized areas in which the scattering signal can be used as a diagnostic criterion. In the quantitative analyses, Tukey's test was performed to evaluate the means of the optical attenuation coefficient, which did not present significant differences. However, considering the correlation, homogeneity and contrast analyses, a statistically significant difference was observed between the groups. The group with severe MIH showed greater homogeneity and correlation, but less contrast. Conclusion: Currently, MIH has its severity measured by essentially clinical means. OCT processing techniques reveal advances in the diagnostic imaging of MIH, showing that image texture analysis can be a promising and useful method to aid in its diagnosis.

The objective of this study was to compare the activation of gelatinases in dentin-enamel junction (DEJ) and underlying dentin of permanent teeth after experimental radiotherapy in conventional and hypofractionated modalities. Newly extracted third molars (n = 15) were divided into three experimental radiotherapy groups: control, conventional (CR), and hypofractionated (HR) (n = 5 per group). After in vitro exposure to ionizing radiation, following standardized protocols for each modality, a gelatinous substrate was incubated on the tooth slices (n = 10 per group). Activation of gelatinases was measured by in situ zymography, expressed in arbitrary fluorescence units (mm2) from three tooth regions: cervical, cuspal, and pit. Fluorescence intensity was compared among radiotherapy protocols and tooth regions in each protocol, considering a significance level of 5%. Considering all tooth regions, the fluorescence intensity of the CR group was higher than the HR and control groups, both in DEJ and underlying dentin (p <0.001). In addition, the fluorescence intensity was higher in underlying dentin when compared to DEJ in all groups (p <0.001). Considering each tooth region, a statistically significant difference between CR and HR was only observed in the pit region of underlying dentin (p <0.001). Significant and positive correlations between fluorescence intensities in DEJ and underlying dentin were also observed (p <0.001). Experimental radiotherapy influenced the activation of gelatinases, as well as exposure to the conventional protocol can trigger a higher activation of gelatinases when compared to hypofractionated, both in DEJ and underlying dentin.

Introduction: Access is considered one of the necessary conditions for achieving effectiveness and quality in health services. However, it represents a complex construct, with several interpretations, and can be understood as the ease or degree of difficulty with which people obtain effective and timely care. Barriers to access can be related to individual characteristics and those of health systems and services. Regarding elderly people living in rural riverine localities, these limitations are exacerbated due to the territorial dispersion of households and the difficulty of obtaining the necessary care near their homes. The aim of this study was to describe and test the association of sarcopenia and physical performance with primary healthcare attributes and the use of health services by elderly people living in rural riverside areas in the Amazon, Brazil., Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was carried out in households with individuals aged 60 years or older living in nine communities located on the left bank of the Negro River, in the rural riverside area of the municipality of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. The study evaluated socioeconomic and demographic conditions, health services utilization and the primary care attributes related to the use of and access to services, assessed by components of the Primary Care Assessment Tool instrument (PCATool-Brazil), a reduced version validated for Brazilian adult users. Physical performance was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery scale, and handgrip strength was also assessed, according to a dynamometer. The Sarcopenia Formulary (SARC-F) and calf circumference (CC) were used to assess sarcopenia (SARC-CalF). The association of sarcopenia and physical performance with the study outcomes was evaluated using hierarchical logistic regression for health services utilization (having had a medical consultation in the last year), and hierarchical linear regression for the continuous outcomes of the PCATool-Brazil (total score and each of the domains). The sociodemographic variables were inserted in model 1 and the clinical variables in model 2. Variables with p<0.20 were kept in the models., Results: A total of 98 elderly people (55.1% men; mean age 70&plusmn;7.4 years) were included in the study. Low physical performance and suggestive signs of sarcopenia were observed in 52.5% and 28.9% of the study participants, respectively. Elderly with better physical performance reported more health services utilization (odds ratio (OR)=1.37; 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.03-1.81) and higher scores in the affiliation (&beta;=1.67; 95%CI=0.37-2.98), utilization (&beta;=1.19; 95%CI=0.06-2.33) and longitudinality (&beta;=0.99; 95%CI=0.09-1.90) domains of the PCATool-Brazil., Conclusion: The study findings showed high prevalence of impairment in physical performance and suggestive signs of sarcopenia in elderly people living in the studied rural riverside localities. Better physical performance was associated with use of health services in the previous year and with better evaluation of some primary care attributes.

Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate whether dental hypersensitivity and dental fear were linked to the presence and severity of MIH., Methods: For this cross-sectional study, 1830 students between the ages of 6 and 12 years were recruited from four randomly selected schools. The Children's Fear Survey Schedule-Dental Subscale questionnaire was used to assess dental anxiety and fear. The children's self-reported dental hypersensitivity resulting from MIH was evaluated using the Wong-Baker Facial Scale and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS)., Results: MIH was correlated with tooth hypersensitivity, particularly in severe cases. Dental fear was present in 17.4% of the children with MIH, but it was not associated with dental hypersensitivity, gender, or age., Conclusion: No association was found between dental fear and dental hypersensitivity in children with MIH., (© 2023. Introduction: Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative defect of dental enamel that affects one or more permanent first molars, with or without involvement of the incisor teeth. This condition leads to challenges to dental care and treatment planning., Aim: Based on the hypothesis that children who have MIH possibly present alterations in postural and masticatory activities and considering the absence of studies investigating these parameters, the present study evaluated the functionality of the stomatognathic system considering the mentioned aspects., Materials: The comparison of individuals with (MIHG; n = 32) and without MIH (CG; n = 32) was evaluated by electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles (right and left), as well as evaluation of the masticatory cycles during habitual mastication., Results: MIHG showed muscle hyperactivity in postural and dynamic conditions compared to the CG; higher electromyographic values for MIHG when compared to CG in the following postural conditions: at rest for the right temporal (p = 0.00) and left temporal muscles (p = 0.03); in the protrusion to the right temporal muscle (p = 0.02); in the right laterality for the right masseter (p = 0.00) and left temporal muscles (p = 0.01); in the left laterality for the right masseter (p = 0.03) and left temporal (p = 0.04) muscles. In dynamic conditions with consistent food, significance was observed for the left temporal (p = 0.01); and with soft food for the right (p = 0.01) and left temporal muscles (p = 0.04)., Conclusions: Children with MIH seem to have impaired functionality of the stomatognathic system. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on biomineralization of enamel. Sixty C57Bl6 male mice were used, which were assigned into three groups: celecoxib (n = 20) or indomethacin (n = 20) treatment for a period of 28 days or received no medication (control group, n = 20). Visual inspection and microcomputed tomography were used to analyze enamel morphology. Scanning electron microscopy-Energy dispersive X-ray and Knoop microhardness test were used to quantify chemical element content (Ca, P, C, O) and enamel microhardness, respectively. Tissues were collected to investigate the synthesis, activity or nuclear translocation of metalloproteinase-20, transcription factor Runx2, dentin sialoprotein and cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme by means of immunohistochemistry, in situ zymography and indirect immunofluorescence. Treatment with indomethacin and celecoxib reduced the Ca and P content, microhardness and mineral density in enamel. Treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs caused an accumulation of metalloproteinase-20 and overall increased enzymatic activity in enamel matrix, while the synthesis of the transcription factor Runx2 was inhibited by these drugs. Interestingly, indomethacin inhibited Runx2 translocation to the nucleus whereas celecoxib did not. To investigate osteoclast formation in vivo and if leukotriene B4 (LTB4) loaded in microspheres (MS) could be used as a therapeutical strategy to promote a sustained delivery of the mediator and prevent osteoclast differentiation. Methods: In vivo, apical periodontitis was induced in mice to investigate osteoclast differentiation and signaling in absence of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO). In vitro, LTB4-MS were prepared using an oil-in-water emulsion solvent extraction-evaporation process. Characterization and efficiency of LTB4 encapsulation were investigated. J774A.1 macrophages were cultured in the presence of monocyte colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and ligand for receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B (RANKL) and then stimulated with LTB4-MS. Cytotoxicity, in vitro MS-LTB4 uptake, osteoclast formation and gene expression were measured. Results: We found that 5-LO negatively regulates osteoclastic formation in vivo during apical periodontitis development. In vitro, LTB4-MS were up-taken by macrophages and were not cytotoxic to the cells. LTB4-MS inhibited osteoclast formation and the synthesis of osteoclastogenic genes Acp5, Mmp9, Calcr and Ctsk. LTB4-MS inhibited differentiation of macrophages into an osteoclastic phenotype and cell activation under M-CSF and RANKL stimulus.

Objectives: Radiotherapy (RT) is a kind of head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment, which is associated to the habit of smoking and can develop collateral effects in the oral cavity, such as the increase of caries prevalence. This study evaluated the color alteration, the microhardness, and the remineralizing potential of high fluoride concentration toothpastes on irradiated teeth., Materials and Methods: Forty bovine teeth were used (6 × 6 × 2 mm) and after color (EasyShade, VITA) and microhardness initial readings were separated into two groups: exposed to cigarette smoke and non-exposed. All samples were submitted to RT (30 Gy) and to cariogenic challenge. New color and microhardness readings were done. After RT (60 Gy), the samples were submitted to simulated toothbrushing (73,000 cycles = 5 years of brushing) with two different toothpastes: conventional (1450 ppm) and high fluoride concentration (5000 ppm). Final color and microhardness readings were done after brushing. Data were analyzed with 2-way ANOVA with repeated measures and Tukey's test (p < .05)., Results: There was no color difference after RT, nor after brushing (p > .05). However, after brushing, microhardness values increased for the samples treated with high fluoride concentration toothpaste (p < .05)., Conclusion: Radiotherapy did not influence the teeth color, and the high fluoride concentration toothpaste presented remineralizing potential; therefore, it could be used on the caries prevention related to HNC radiation., Clinical Relevance: Considering its remineralizing potential, toothpastes with high fluoride concentration could be a proper alternative for caries prevention in patients undergoing radiotherapy., (© 2022. Objective: to analyze the Mental Health Literacy of young and aged men living in Brazil in the COVID-19 pandemic context., Method: a qualitative study conducted with 87 men by means of an asynchronous online survey. The data were processed in the NVIVO12® software, structured with the Collective Subject Discourse method and analyzed through Anthony Jorm's theoretical concept of Mental Health Literacy., Results: six central ideas emerged from the analysis of a synthesis discourse on the components of the Mental Health Literacy, namely: Ability to recognize specific disorders or different types of psychological distress; Knowledge and beliefs about risk factors and causes; Knowledge and beliefs about self-help interventions; Knowledge and beliefs about available professional help; Attitudes that facilitate recognition and the search for adequate help; and Knowledge on how to seek information on mental health., Conclusion: there are differences in the mental health literacy of young and aged men living in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aged men were more competent for mental health care management and protection than young men, in relation to the Mental Health Literacy levels.

The analysis of sociodemographic and emotional factors is essential to understanding how men perceive stress and practice self-compassion. In health crises, this problem becomes an emergency for public health. This study aimed to analyze the influence of sociodemographic and emotional factors on the relationship between self-compassion and the perceived stress of men residing in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a nationwide cross-sectional study carried out between June and December 2020 with 1006 men who completed a semi-structured electronic questionnaire. Data were collected using the snowball technique. Perceived stress was measured by the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14), and self-compassion was assessed using the Self-Compassion Scale. Most men had low self-compassion (51.5%; n = 516) and a moderate level of perceived stress (60.9%; n = 613), while 15.9% ( n = 170) had a high level of stress. The prevalence of men in the combined situation of low self-compassion and high perceived stress was 39.4% ( n = 334). Living with friends had a higher prevalence of low self-compassion and high perceived stress. The prevalence of common mental disorders was high (54.3%). Men with low levels of self-compassion reported higher levels of perceived stress; however, this association was moderated by emotional and sociodemographic variables. These findings highlight the importance of considering individual and contextual factors in public policies promoting men's mental health.

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is often accompanied by dental hypersensitivity and difficulty in achieving effective analgesia., Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of preemptive analgesia in children with severe MIH, post-eruptive enamel breakdown, and hypersensitivity., Methodology: Ibuprofen (10 mg/kg child weight) or placebo was administered, followed by infiltrative anesthesia and restoration with resin composite. Hypersensitivity was evaluated in five moments. The data were analyzed using the chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and t-test., Results: Preemptive analgesia provided benefits for the treatment of severe cases of MIH, with an increase in the effectiveness of infiltrative anesthesia and improved patient comfort during the restorative procedure., Conclusion: Preemptive analgesia has shown efficacy in reducing hypersensitivity during restorative dental procedures, evidencing the significance of this study for patients with MIH and hypersensitivity.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a clinical condition and a relevant risk factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases; it occurs as a result of lifestyle factors, e.g., work. The aim of this research was to estimate the interaction between work and MS among primary health care (PHC) nursing professionals in the state of Bahia, Brazil. A sectional multicentered study carried out in 43 municipalities in Bahia, whose study population consisted of nursing professionals. The exposure variables were occupation, professional exhaustion, and working time, and the outcome variable was MS. Interaction measures based on the additivity criteria were verified by calculating the excess risks due to the interactions and according to the proportion of cases attributed to the interactions and the synergy index. The global MS prevalence is 24.4%. There was a greater magnitude in the exposure group regarding the three investigated factors (average level occupation, professional exhaustion, and working time in PHC for more than 5 years), reaching an occurrence of 44.9% when compared to the prevalence of 13.1% in the non-exposure group (academic education, without professional burnout, and working time in PHC for up to 5 years). The study's findings showed a synergistic interaction of work aspects for MS occurrence among PHC nursing professionals.

In this study, we evaluated the knowledge, attitudes, and psychosocial impacts among Brazilian pediatric dentists during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study with primary data collection was carried out using an online structured questionnaire. Data were submitted to descriptive analysis by using absolute and relative frequencies. A chi-square test was used for association analysis and log-linear regression models to estimate the prevalence ratio (5%). The population comprised mostly women and knowledge regarding COVID-19 was satisfactory (above 80% in most items). N95 masks and faceshields were used, albeit 64.22% reported difficulty in providing dental care to children due to the need for extra Personal Protective Equipment. Thirty eight percent provided urgency/emergency dental care, 59.78% performed invasive procedures, 59.56% used high speed handpieces, 8.44% started using cariostatics, and 6.22% introduced the use of chemomechanical caries removal agents. Fear for the future (PR = 1.21) and use of medications (for anxiety, depression, or insomnia) increased (PR = 1.16) among the ones who had wage losses. Brazilian pediatric dentists have knowledge about COVID-19, and attitudes in their clinical routines changed due the pandemic. Financial life was harmed and a negative impact of the pandemic in psychosocial aspects of workers was found.

Objective: to understand how the contradictions and tensions of neoliberal policy, materialized in precarious work, affect nursing workers' mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic., Method: this is a study with a qualitative and descriptive approach, analyzed in the light of neoliberal economic policy. Data were collected through virtual means, with the participation of 719 nursing workers, from April to June 2020. To organize the data, the IRaMuTeQ® software and thematic analysis were used., Results: the reports revealed the lack of value of workers and the loss of social labor rights; the progressive nature of the neoliberal policy, its threats and repercussions on workers' mental health; and recognition by female workers that political and class participation does not occur in isolation, but collectively., Conclusion: under the aegis of neoliberal policy, the COVID-19 pandemic brought an upsurge precarious work, influencing nursing workers' subjectivity and mental health.

Introduction: The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of self-reported chronic low back pain and to identify the associated factors in elderly people living in rural riverside areas in the Amazon., Methods: Data from a cross-sectional home-based survey performed in 38 riverside rural locations along the left bank of the Negro River, in the municipality of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, were analyzed. The selected elderly people answered a questionnaire comprising items related to the living conditions, socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, health status and utilization of health services. The outcome was self-reported chronic back pain or problem. The association between the outcome and the independent variables was assessed using logistic regression, estimating the odds ratios and respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: One hundred and six residents aged 60 years or older out of a total of 277 were included in the study. The prevalence of chronic back pain among the elderly residents was 57.5% (63.3% among men and 50.0% among women). Most of them did not have any treatment related to their chronic condition (77.0%). Occupation in activities other than agricultural activities was protective for the outcome (odds ratio (OR)=0.1, 95%CI=0.0-0.9). The chronic low back pain was also associated with worse self-perceived health (OR=10.3, 95%CI=1.6-67.5)., Conclusion: The high prevalence of chronic low back pain in elderly people living in rural riverside areas, along with limited access to treatment and the different impacts on the performance of daily activities and the quality of life, reveals the relevance of this condition as a public health problem.

Objective: To analyze the relationships between sociodemographic variables, intolerance to uncertainty (INT), social support, and psychological distress (i.e., indicators of Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) and perceived stress (PS)) in Brazilian men during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: A cross-sectional study with national coverage, of the web survey type, and conducted with 1006 Brazilian men during the period of social circulation restriction imposed by the health authorities in Brazil for suppression of the coronavirus and control of the pandemic. Structural equation modeling analysis was performed., Results: Statistically significant direct effects of race/skin color (λ = 0.268; p -value < 0.001), socioeconomic status (SES) (λ = 0.306; p -value < 0.001), household composition (λ = 0.281; p -value < 0.001), PS (λ = 0.513; p -value < 0.001), and INT (λ = 0.421; p -value < 0.001) were evidenced in the occurrence of CMDs. Black-skinned men with higher SES, living alone, and with higher PS and INT levels presented higher prevalence values of CMDs., Conclusions: High levels of PS and INT were the factors that presented the strongest associations with the occurrence of CMDs among the men. It is necessary to implement actions to reduce the stress-generating sources as well as to promote an increase in resilience and the development of intrinsic reinforcements to deal with uncertain threats.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in controlling pulpal and periapical inflammation in vivo as a potential coadjutant systemic therapy for pulpitis., Materials and Methods: A suspension containing E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 1.0 μg/μL) was inoculated into the pulp chamber of the first molars of C57BL/6 mice (n = 72), and the animals were treated daily with indomethacin or celecoxib throughout the experimental periods. After 7, 14, 21, and 28 days, the tissues were removed for histopathological, histoenzymology, histometric, and immunohistochemical evaluation., Results: Inoculation of LPS into the pulp chamber induced the synthesis of the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in dental pulp and periapical region. Indomethacin and celecoxib treatment changed the profile of inflammatory cells recruited to dental pulp and to the periapex, which was characterized by a higher mononuclear cell infiltrate, compared to LPS inoculation alone which recruited a higher amount of polymorphonuclear neutrophils. Administration of indomethacin for 28 days resulted in the development of apical periodontitis and increased osteoclast recruitment, unlike celecoxib., Conclusions: NSAIDs indomethacin and celecoxib changed the recruitment of inflammatory cells to a mononuclear profile upon inoculation of LPS into the pup chamber, but indomethacin enhanced periapical bone loss whereas celecoxib did not., Clinical Relevance: Celecoxib, a selective COX-2 inhibitor, can change the profile of inflammatory cells recruited to the dental pulp challenged with LPS and might a be potential systemic coadjutant for treatment of pulpitis., (© 2021. The aim of the present in vivo study was to evaluate the bacterial contamination of sports mouthguards, surface roughness, and the efficacy of chlorhexidine gluconate spray in the disinfection of these devices. A randomized, blinded cross-over clinical trial was performed with twenty 9 to 13 years old children who practiced martial arts and participated in all phases of the study. They were instructed to wear mouthguards 3 alternated days a week for 1 hour and, after use, to spray sterile tap water or chlorhexidine 0.12%. The mouthguards were analyzed by MTT assay, Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization, and confocal laser microscopy prior and after use for 2 weeks. Data were analyzed by Wilcoxon and t-Student, and Pearson correlation tests, with 5% significance level. Were observed that mouthguards of the control group were more contaminated with cariogenic microorganisms than those of the chlorhexidine group (p<0.05). The mouthguards use of spray of chlorhexidine reduced significantly the bacteria contamination compared with control group (p = 0.007). The surface roughness of the mouthguards increased significantly after use, irrespective of application of chlorhexidine spray. A moderate correlation (r=0.59) was observed between surface roughness and the cariogenic microorganism's contamination only for control group. Sports mouthguards had intense microbial contamination and increased surface roughness after its use. The use of chlorhexidine spray was effective for reducing the mouthguards contamination used by children.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of selective and nonselective inhibitors of cyclooxygenase-2 enzymes in the treatment of experimental apical periodontitis induced by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vivo in a mouse model., Methodology: Thirty-six C57BL/6 mice were used. After access cavity preparation, a solution containing E. coli LPS (1.0 µg µL -1 ) was inoculated into the root canals of the mandibular and maxillary right first molars (n = 72) After 30 days, apical periodontitis was established and the animals were systemically treated with celecoxib, a selective COX-2 inhibitor (15 mg kg -1 ), or indomethacin, a nonselective COX-2 inhibitor (5 mg kg -1 ), for 7 and 14 days. Blocks containing teeth and bone were removed for histopathological and histometric analyses (haematoxylin and eosin), evaluation of osteoclasts numbers (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase enzyme - TRAP) and immunohistochemistry for RANK, RANKL and OPG. Gene expression was performed using reverse transcription and real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) for RANK, RANKL, OPG, TRAP, MMP-9, cathepsin K and calcitonin receptor. Histopathological, histometric, TRAP, immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR data were evaluated using Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn's test (α = 0.05)., Results: Systemic administration of celecoxib for 7 and 14 days prevented periapical bone resorption (P < 0.0001), differently from indomethacin that exacerbated bone resorption at 7 days (P < 0.0001) or exerted no effect at 14 days (P = 0.8488). Celecoxib treatment reduced osteoclast formation in apical periodontitis, regardless of the period of treatment (P < 0.0001 for 7 days and P = 0.026 for 14 days). Administration of celecoxib or indomethacin differentially modulated the expression of genes involved in bone resorption. At 7 days, celecoxib and indomethacin treatment significantly inhibited expression of mRNA for cathepsin K (P = 0.0005 and P = 0.016, respectively) without changing TRAP, MMP-9 and calcitonin receptor gene expression. At 14 days, celecoxib significantly inhibited expression of mRNA for MMP-9 (P < 0.0001) and calcitonin receptor (P = 0.004), whilst indomethacin exerted no effect on MMP-9 (P = 0.216) and calcitonin receptor (P = 0.971) but significantly augmented cathepsin K gene expression (P = 0.001)., Conclusions: The selective COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib reduced osteoclastogenic signalling and activity that dampened bone resorption in LPS-induced apical periodontitis in mice, with greater efficacy than the nonselective inhibitor indomethacin., (© 2021 International Endodontic Journal. Objective: To understand the meanings and perspectives attributed by men to the period lived in the Covid-19 pandemic., Method: Qualitative study structured on the concepts of phenomenology, based on Heidegger's ontic interpretation, carried out with 400 men residing in Brazil. Data was produced through a form made available online. The responses were processed in the NVIVO12 software and analyzed according to the Discourse of the Collective Subject., Results: Two units of analytical meanings revealed in discourse-synthesis emerged. These units were supported by central ideas and ordered in five subunits that represent the collectivity of the investigated phenomenon. The units are: Being and being-in-the-world in the context of the pandemic - experiencing its possibilities and The vigor of the past and the present are presented as possibilities for a new future in the face of the pandemic., Conclusion: The meanings and perspectives revealed a being-there in the context of the pandemic based on themselves, with changes in the routine and feelings and willingness to new possibilities and transformations, which generated psychosocial impact and coping and care strategies in the period of the pandemic. As implications, it is necessary to have a new understanding of the man-being, as they demonstrate the need for care, and for a care that goes beyond physical health.

Objectives: To answer the questions: (1) Does reducing estrogen levels influence the microbial composition of the oral cavity? (2) Does the presence of periapical lesion (PL) cause changes in the oral microbiota? (3) Since estrogen deficiency alters the oral microbiota, can this be one of the factors that contribute to the increase of the PL?, Materials and Methods: Thirty-six rats were divided into four groups: sham (control), ovariectomy (OVX), control with PL (Sham + PL), and OVX + PL. After 9 weeks of OVX, the lower first molars were submitted to PL induction. After 21 days, the microbiological collection of the oral cavity was performed, and the animals were euthanized. The contents were evaluated by the checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization method, to verify the prevalence of 40 bacterial species (divided into 7 microbial complexes). The blocks containing the lower first molars were submitted to histotechnical processing and staining with hematoxylin and eosin (HE), for the measurement of the periapical lesion area. The results were submitted to ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests and Tukey and Dunn post-tests, with a significance level of 5%., Results: In conditions of estrogen deficiency, there was alteration of the oral microbiota. The OVX groups had a higher amount of bacteria compared to the SHAM group in most of the microbial complexes (p < 0.001). The animals in the control group (with or without lesion) did not present a statistically significant difference (p > 0.001) in any of the microbial complexes. The PLs in OVX animals were significantly higher compared to SHAM animals (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Hypoestrogenicity conditions interfere in the oral microbiota by increasing the amount of bacteria in the saliva and influencing the progression of periapical lesions., Clinical Relevance: This inedited study shows that deficiency of estrogen leads to alteration of the oral microbiota.

Objective: to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic mobilizes masculinities in relation to mental health., Methods: qualitative study conducted with 400 men, in a virtual environment, in all regions of Brazil. The data were analyzed by the Discourse of the Collective Subject and based on Symbolic Interactionism., Results: the mobilization of masculinities emerged from men towards the recognition of weaknesses and psycho-emotional vulnerabilities, with narratives that reveal the expression of feelings, pain, discomfort and psychological suffering, and showed themselves to be sensitive and engaged in performing practices, including autonomous ones, of health care mental., Final Considerations: the pandemic mobilizes masculinities as men print meanings and senses, in their interaction and interpretation of mental health, and is a marker for the nursing clinic conduct.

Introduction: The objective of this study was to evaluate in vitro and in vivo bacterial endotoxin (LPS) adhesion in polyurethane and silicone esthetic elastomeric orthodontic ligatures. The null hypotheses tested were: (1) there is no LPS adhesion in esthetic elastomeric orthodontic ligatures; and (2) there is no difference in the LPS adhesion between different brands of these ligatures., Methods: For the in vitro study, 4 types of esthetic elastomeric ligatures were used (Sani-Ties and Sili-Ties [Dentsply GAC, Islandia, NY;] and Mini Single Case Ligature Stick and Synergy low-friction ligatures [Rocky Mountain Orthodontics, Denver, Colo]), contaminated or not with endotoxin solution. Replicas of twisted wire and cast stainless steel ligatures were used as control. For the in vivo study, 10 male and 10 female patients, aged 15-30 years, received the same 4 types of ligatures, 1 of each inserted in the maxillary and mandibular canines, randomly. Twenty-one days later, the ligatures were removed, and endotoxin quantification was performed using the Limulus amebocyte lysate test. Data were analyzed (α = 0.05) using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's posttest or analysis of variance and Tukey's posttest., Results: GAC silicone group had the lowest median contamination (1.15 endotoxin units/mL; P <0.0001) in vitro. In the in vivo study, the GAC silicone group had the lowest mean contamination (0.577 endotoxin units/mL; P <0.001). In both studies, the other groups did not present a significant difference when compared with each other (P >0.05)., Conclusions: LPS exhibited an affinity for all the tested polyurethane and silicone elastomeric ligatures. GAC silicone ligatures presented with lower amounts of LPS attached to their surfaces. Thus, both null hypotheses were rejected., (Copyright © 2021 American Association of Orthodontists. Objectives: To evaluate denosumab, a human monoclonal antibody that mimics the effects of osteoprotegerin in bone metabolism, as a topical treatment of root surface to be used prior to delayed tooth replantation., Materials and Methods: Thirty-six rats' right incisors were used. Teeth were extracted and divided into: delayed replantation without root surface treatment (control); delayed replantation with root surface treatment with denosumab 60 mg/mL and 30 mg/mL, respectively, for 10 min both experimentals groups. After that, the root canals were filled with calcium hydroxide and replanted. After 15 and 60 days, the animals were euthanized, and the samples were collected and processed for microscopic analysis. Histological sections were performed, and stained with HE to describe the dental characteristics, measure ankylosis, replacement resorption, and dental resorption by conventional microscopy. Also, was performed Brown & Brenn staining and immunohistochemistry for RANKL, OPG, and periostin., Results: Denosumab 60 mg/mL reducted ankylosis (p < 0.0001), replacement resorption (p < 0.0001), and tooth resorption, 60 days after replantation, compared to untreated replanted teeth (p < 0.005). Lower bacterial contamination in root surface in the denosumab treatment groups was found, regardless of the concentration used (p < 0.001). Also, denosumab treatment inhibited the expression of RANKL without modulating OPG. Periostin was observed in periodontal ligament of replanted tooth, although this labelling was absent in the ankylosis areas, in both experimental periods., Conclusion: Treatment of the root surface with denosumab at 60 mg/mL of rat teeth before delayed replantation reduced dental root resorption compared with the untreated teeth after 60 days., Clinical Relevance: Survival of a replanted tooth has been a challenge in clinical practice. The use of a medication, such as denosumab, to limit dental root resorption represents an important therapeutical approach.

Jeune syndrome (JS) is a rare disease, with systemic manifestations, such as renal and hepatic insufficiency, retinal pigmentation, and respiratory insufficiency. Etiological factors have not been completely elucidated, but the molecular biology has contributed to the diagnosis and understanding of JS with DNA sequencing, showing the association among polymorphisms in different genes DYNC2H1 (MIM 603297) and TCTEX1D2 (MIM617353), which are the main genes associated with JS. There are a few reports on buccal findings in these patients; here, we present dental anomalies and clinical oral findings in a patient with JS, focusing on a multidisciplinary approach for rehabilitation. A 15-year-old boy with JS was referred to our dental clinic. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed the presence of dental agenesis, taurodontism, and geographic tongue with lobulations. The treatment plan consisted of preventive, restorative, surgical, and oral rehabilitation. We observed that the treatment improved the patient's quality of life owing to improved functions, maintenance of oral health, and above all, self-esteem. Purpose: To evaluate the morphological alterations in enamel and dentin of primary teeth following radiotherapy (RT) and to determine the best adhesive technique and time to carry out restorative procedures.
Methods: Enamel and dentin fragments of primary teeth were randomly assigned into four groups (n=30): G1 (control)-non-irradiated, only restorative procedure; G2- restorative procedure immediately before RT; G3-restorative procedure 24 hours after RT; and G4-restorative procedure six months after RT. Each group was divided into one of two subgroups according to the adhesive system used for restoration: (1) AdperSingle Bond 2 (SB); and (2) ClearfillSE Bond (CL). The specimens were submitted to fractionated RT until they reached the final dose of 60 Gy. They were then subjected to confocal microscopy and the shear bond strength test. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's tests ( α = five percent).
Results: Morphological changes were first observed in enamel and dentin after 40 Gy of irradiation. G4 bond strength values were similar to G1 in the CL and SB groups for enamel and in the CL group for dentin ( P >0.05). G2 showed the lowest values for enamel and dentin ( P <0.05). In G3, CL presented the highest strength values in enamel; for G4, the highest values were found in dentin ( P <0.05).
Conclusions: Radiotherapy affected the morphological surface of enamel and dentin. The restorations placed immediately after RT had the weakest shear bond strength, and the restorations placed six months after RT had similar means of bond strength compared to the nonirradiated teeth in enamel, regardless of the adhesive system used. In dentin, CL showed better performance than SB.

Purpose: Radiation-related caries is characterized by enamel delamination near the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ). We investigated the activity and expression of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) -2 and -9 in order to understand disease pathogenesis in teeth submitted or not to radiotherapy (RT).
Methods: In situ zymography and immunofluorescence assays were performed to evaluate the activity and expression of MMPs -2 and -9, respectively. Twelve primary second molars were randomly assigned into two experimental subgroups: irradiated and nonirradiated. Dental fragments were exposed to radiation at a dose fraction of two Gy for five consecutive days until reaching the total dose of 60 Gy. The percentage of fluorescence in the DEJ was evaluated in three distinct regions of the tooth (cervical, cusp, and pit). The regions were photographed under fluorescence microscopy at 1.25× and 5× magnification.
Results: The intensity of fluorescence per mm 2 in the DEJ was higher in the cervical region of irradiated primary teeth ( P <0.05) versus nonirradiated ones. In these areas, immunofluorescence revealed expression of MMPs -2 and -9.
Conclusion: Radiotherapy can increase the activity of MMPs -2 and -9 in the cervical region of the DEJ of primary teeth.

Aim: To quantify M1 and M2 macrophages in radicular cysts of permanent (n = 14 cases) and primary teeth (n = 15 cases)., Methodology: All patients who attended the School of Dentistry Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo with primary teeth or permanent molars that were scheduled for extraction and fulfilled the inclusion criteria: absence of pain; presence/absence of fistulae; extensive coronal destruction due to caries lesions without possibility of restoration; pulp necrosis; radiographically visible apical periodontitis; and no previous treatment, were selected. The radicular cysts were removed and subsequently submitted to histopathologic analysis in order to classify the type of inflammatory infiltrate. In addition, CD68 (M1+, M2+) and CD163 (M1-, M2+) markers were quantified through an immunohistochemistry analysis. The data acquired were submitted to a Mann-Whitney test, with a 5% significance level., Results: The patients had a mean age of 38.6 years and 5.9 years for cysts associated with permanent and primary teeth, respectively. In the histopathological analysis, no significant difference (P = 0.87) was found between radicular cysts in primary and permanent teeth regarding the intensity of the chronic inflammatory infiltrate. A significantly greater prevalence of M2 macrophages (P < 0.05) was observed in the lesions of both permanent and primary teeth, even though both M1 and M2 macrophages were detected. No significant difference (P > 0.05) was found for M1 and M2 macrophages associated with the cysts of primary and permanent teeth., Conclusion: M1 and M2 macrophages were present in radicular cysts associated with primary and permanent teeth, with a greater quantity of M2 cells. Aim: To evaluate the effect of carbodiimide (EDC) and chlorhexidine (CHX) on the bond strength (BS) of resin cement to root dentine of teeth submitted to radiotherapy., Methodology: One hundred and twenty extracted maxillary canines were selected and assigned to 2 groups (n = 60): nonirradiated and irradiated (30 cycles of 2 Gy, total 60 Gy). Roots lengths were standardized, and canals were prepared and filled. Post spaces were then prepared, and the samples were redistributed according to dentine treatment (n = 20): saline solution (SF); CHX 2%; or EDC 0.5M. After drying the post space, fibreglass posts were cemented. Cross-sectioned slices were obtained, and in half of the specimens of each subgroup (n = 10), the analysis was performed immediately; the others (n = 10) were stored for 10 months before analyses. The most cervical slice of each third was subjected to a push-out test and failure pattern analysis (n = 10), and the most apical slice submitted to the analysis of the adhesive interface by SEM (n = 5). The bond strength data were submitted to anova and Tukey tests, the adhesive interface adaptation was submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests, and the Chi-square test was used to evaluate the type of failure., Results: The irradiated specimens had significantly lower bond strength (13.8 ± 4.3) than the nonirradiated (18.1 ± 3.1; P < 0.001). For the irradiated teeth, the bond strengths were significantly lower in the SF and CHX groups (P < 0.001). Also, the bond strengths reduced significantly after 10 months in the SF and CHX groups (P < 0.001). Cohesive failures occurred in dentine for irradiated specimens. Poorer interface adaptation, dentine fractures and microfractures were observed in irradiated specimens, and better adaptation was observed for specimens after EDC treatment., Conclusions: Radiotherapy was associated with lower bond strength and worse interface adaptation. Dentine treatment with EDC contributed to adhesive interface longevity during the cementation of glass fibre posts in nonirradiated and irradiated teeth., (© 2019 International Endodontic Journal. Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of SB-20 M culture medium to perform differential morphological identification of S. mutans and S. sobrinus compared to biochemical identification and to proteomic identification by the MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry technique., Material and Methods: Unstimulated saliva samples from 266 dental students were seeded on SB-20 M culture medium by the wooden spatula technique. After incubation, S. mutans and S. sobrinus colonies were identified by stereomicroscopy based on their differential morphological characteristics. Following these procedures, 135 colonies with characteristic morphology of S. mutans (89 colonies) and S. sobrinus (46 colonies) were randomly selected, submitted to biochemical identification (biotyping) and proteomic identification by the MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry technique. The results were compared using the Kappa test, with a 5% significance level., Results: All (100%) S. mutans colonies were correctly identified after culture in SB-20 M medium compared to biotyping and proteomic identification. For S. sobrinus, morphological identification in SB-20 M medium was correct for 43 colonies (93.5%) compared to biotyping and proteomic identification. However, there was no statistically significant difference when comparing the capacity to identify S. mutans and S. sobrinus of the three techniques (p < 0.001; K = 0.951)., Conclusions: It was concluded that the SB-20 M culture medium for morphological identification of S. mutans and S. sobrinus was highly reliable, being comparable to the MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry technique., Clinical Relevance: The efficiency evaluation of identification methods of S. mutans and S. sobrinus is clinically relevant in order to determine caries risk and activity of patients., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of different electrical brushing systems on the surface roughness and wear profile of the enamel of sound primary teeth and teeth with induced white spot lesions., Methods: 45 specimens were obtained from sound primary incisors, and the buccal surface was divided into four parts: sound enamel; enamel with white spot lesions; sound enamel with brushing; and enamel with white spot lesions and brushing. Specimens were randomly divided into three groups (n =15), according to the different brushing systems: Group 1 - Electric rotating toothbrush (Kid's Power Toothbrush - Oral B); Group 2 - Sonic electric toothbrush (Baby Sonic Toothbrush); and Group 3 - Manual toothbrush (Curaprox infantil) (control). The specimens were analyzed for surface roughness and wear profile. Data were analyzed by appropriate statistical tests, with a significance level of 5%., Results: Regarding the surface roughness, no significant difference was observed between the groups. However, with respect to the wear profile, Group 1 caused significantly higher wear in the sound tooth enamel and in the presence of white spot lesions, in comparison to the other brushing systems (2 and 3) (P< 0.05), which did not cause wear. Manual and electric brushing (rotational and sonic) did not increase surface roughness in primary tooth enamel. However, the electric rotational brushing caused significant wear of the sound and demineralized enamel surface of primary teeth., Clinical Significance: None of the toothbrushing systems tested caused significant alterations on sound dental enamel.
