Abstract

Personal ornaments are a very specific kind of material production in human societies and are particularly valuable artifacts for the archaeologist seeking to understand past societies. In the Caribbean, Early Ceramic Age sites have yielded a highly diverse production both in terms of raw materials and typology. In recent years they have been the subject of renewed interest, mainly based on the diversity and provenance of raw materials, and on typological similarity, used as proxies for exchange networks, social interactions and the evolution of these phenomena through the Ceramic Age. Meanwhile, the chaîne opératoire for lithic beads and pendants has not been investigated in detail, including the process of creating narrow perforations in quartz beads several centimeters long. This hard material (7 on the Mohs scale), represented as rock crystal and amethyst in the collections, is indeed very difficult to perforate without the use of metal drills or harder minerals used as drill-bits or abrasives such as diamond or emery. In this work we demonstrate that it is possible to produce these perforations with cactus thorns and crushed quartz as abrasive powder. We also show that the wear created by our experimental work is fully comparable to the wear visible on the archaeological artifacts. This process, using only materials available to Ceramic Age people, also accounts for the absence of both adequate drills and production wastes of quartz beads in the archaeological record. The investment of Ceramic Age inhabitants of the Lesser Antilles in the production of the many beads made of very hard material recovered in archaeological excavations is once again highlighted. The perforation process, not investigated in detail so far in this archaeological context, has to be taken into account in the value of these highly symbolic artifacts, in addition to the exotic provenance of the raw material.

Abstract

Figurative depictions in art first occur ca. 50,000 years ago in Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Considered by most as an advanced form of symbolic behavior, they are restricted to our species. Here, we report a piece of ornament interpreted as a phallus-like representation. It was found in a 42,000 ca.-year-old Upper Paleolithic archaeological layer at the open-air archaeological site of Tolbor-21, in Mongolia. Mineralogical, microscopic, and rugosimetric analyses points toward the allochthonous origin of the pendant and a complex functional history. Three-dimensional phallic pendants are unknown in the Paleolithic record, and this discovery predates the earliest known sexed anthropomorphic representation. It attests that hunter-gatherer communities used sex anatomical attributes as symbols at a very early stage of their dispersal in the region. The pendant was produced during a period that overlaps with age estimates for early introgression events between Homo sapiens and Denisovans, and in a region where such encounters are plausible.

Abstract

This article studies the discoid Didacna sp. shell beads discovered at Kaylu, a Middle Holocene burial site located in Southern Turkmenistan. Microscopic, morphometric, spectrometric, and SEM analyses were carried out on the material to identify how the beads were manufactured and used. New radiocarbon dating and bioanthropological data to age and sex the two skeletons discovered in the burials are provided. A regional synthesis shows that personal ornaments from the Caspian region were diversified through time and that a stylistic shift between the last foragers and the first farmers occurred. We also observed strong correspondences between the personal ornaments documented in the northern, eastern, and western Caspian Sea during the Neolithic, with no evidence of similar symbolic production in Northern Iran. We propose that a northern route may have allowed the diffusion of common ornamental traditions in the Caspian region to the exclusion of the southern Caspian. Alternatively, discontinuities in material culture diffusion in coastal areas could be evidence of maritime voyaging. Seafaring may have granted the fast and spatially erratic diffusion of specific bead types, people, information, knowledge, and symbols from both sides of the Caspian Sea, by long maritime voyages or by leapfrog diffusion during the Neolithic.

Abstract

The Caribbean islands witnessed a population expansion of ceramic‐using horticulturalists during the Early Ceramic Age (ca. 500 BC to 750 AD) from the Orinoco Valley to Puerto Rico. We examined 18 lithic artefacts from Guadeloupe and Dominica initially thought to be obsidian, a material believed to be absent from those islands. We investigated the volcanic or meteoritic origin of this unique and yet unknown material through observation (binocular, SEM, microtomography) and geochemical analyses (PIXE, SEM‐EDS, ED‐XRF, EPMA, LA‐ICP‐MS). Elemental analyses rule out the hypothesis of an origin from a meteoritic impact (i.e. identification as tektites). Most of the artefacts have an andesitic composition (<63% SiO2), which appears to be unique among 'massive' glasses. The only artefact with a rhyolitic composition has been traced back to the Guadeloupe's Volcan du Tuf, where glassy fragments have been collected and analysed. The geological source of the other vitreous artefacts that exhibit an andesitic composition could be from a sublocal subduction‐arc volcanism (maybe from Martinique), although no volcanic vitreous material of this kind has ever been reported worldwide. These results once again highlight the regional mobility of Early Ceramic populations and the production of standard lithic products using a highly original, albeit low‐quality, local lithic resource, and provide valuable references for future identification of similar materials. Abstract

After presenting the geographical framework of this region on the south-eastern edge of the Massif Central which saw the birth of volcanology and still fuels debates on the contemporaneity of man and extinct volcanoes, we recall the general context and chronology of recent volcanic activity in the Velay-Vivarais, known as the “Young Volcanoes of Ardèche”. We insist on the contra- dictory results provided by the different dating methods used in recent decades (14C, OSL, TL, K/Ar and 40Ar/39Ar) and provide new results about three localities: the Grand Suc de Breysse (Présailles, Haute-Loire), the Suc de Bauzon whose flow dammed the Palaeo-Loire at Rieutord (Usclades-et-Rieutord, Ardèche) and the Issarlès maar (Le Lac d’Issarlès, Ardèche) with lacustrine sedi- mentary archives preserved below a 108.5 m waterbody. The eruption of the Grand Suc de Breysse began with a phreatomagmatic phase during MIS 5 (OSL, TL, K/Ar). The filling of the Rieutord volcanic dam paleo-lake fossilises a basaltic flow dated at 85 ± 4 ka (K/Ar) and continues during MIS 3: in its central part, the upper part of the preserved deposit is dated between 41.7 and 18.2 ka (14C and OSL); in its upstream part, deltaic deposits of the paleo-Loire are dated between 52 ± 2 and 35 ± 3 ka (OSL). The eruption of the Issarlès maar is dated at 54 ± 8 ka (TL), confirming that it belongs to a recent phase of the volcanism of the “Young Volcanoes of Ardèche”. At the moment, no Palaeolithic vestiges are directly associated with these three volcano-sedimentary complexes. Cet article est une contribution à l’étude chronostratigraphique du volcanisme récent du Bas Vivarais (les « Jeunes volcans d’Ardèche ») et des dépôts qui s’y trouvent associés. Après avoir présenté le cadre géographique de cette région de la bordure sud-est du Massif central (Velay-Vivarais) qui vit naître la volcanologie et a alimenté jusqu’à aujourd’hui les débats sur la contemporanéité de l’homme et des volcans éteints, le contexte général et la chronologie de l’activité volcanique récente sont rappelés. On insiste sur les résultats contradictoires des différentes méthodes de datation utilisées au cours des dernières décennies (14C, OSL, TL, K/Ar et 40Ar/39Ar). Après la présentation des méthodes, les résultats inédits obtenus sur trois systèmes volcaniques sont exposés et discutés : le Grand Suc de Breysse (Présailles, Haute-Loire), le Suc de Bauzon et sa coulée ayant barré la paléo-Loire à Rieutord (Usclades-et- Rieutord, Ardèche), et le maar d’Issarlès (Le Lac d’Issarlès, Ardèche) et ses archives sédimentaires lacustres préservées par 108,5 m de fond. Le remplissage du paléo-lac de barrage volcanique de Rieutord fossilise une coulée basaltique datée de 85 ± 4 ka (K/Ar). Abstract

and depictive representations produced by drawing--known from Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia after 40,000 years ago--are a prime indicator of modern cognition and behaviour.sup.1. Here we report a cross-hatched pattern drawn with an ochre crayon on a ground silcrete flake recovered from approximately 73,000-year-old Middle Stone Age levels at Blombos Cave, South Africa. Our microscopic and chemical analyses of the pattern confirm that red ochre pigment was intentionally applied to the flake with an ochre crayon. The object comes from a level associated with stone tools of the Still Bay techno-complex that has previously yielded shell beads, cross-hatched engravings on ochre pieces and a variety of innovative technologies.sup.2-5. This notable discovery pre-dates the earliest previously known abstract and figurative drawings by at least 30,000 years. Abstract

The earliest European carvings, made of mammoth ivory, depict animals, humans, and anthropomorphs. They are found at Early Aurignacian sites of the Swabian Jura in Germany. Despite the wide geographical spread of the Aurignacian across Europe, these carvings have no contemporaneous counterparts. Here, we document a small, intriguing object, that sheds light on this uniqueness. Found at the Grotte des Gorges (Jura, France), in a layer sandwiched between Aurignacian contexts and dated to c. 36.2 ka, the object bears traces of anthropogenic modifications indicating intentional carving. Microtomographic, microscopic, three-dimensional roughness and residues analyses reveal the carving is a fragment of a large ammonite, which was modified to represent a caniformia head decorated with notches and probably transported for long time in a container stained with ochre. While achieving Swabian Jura-like miniaturization, the Grotte des Gorges specimen displays original features, indicating the craftsman emulated ivory carvings while introducing significant technical, thematic, and stylistic innovations. This finding suggests a low degree of cultural connectivity between Early Aurignacian hunter-gatherer groups in the production of their symbolic material culture. The pattern conforms to the existence of cultural boundaries limiting the transmission of symbolic practices while leaving space for the emergence of original regional expressions. Abstract

International audience; Depuis 2016, le PCR « Réseau de lithothèques en région Centre - Val de Loire » s’inscrit dans une perspective longue de recherche sur les modes d’exploitation des ressources lithiques et sur la territorialité des groupes humains préhistoriques. Outre l’étude ou la révision de séries archéologiques de l’espace régional, la caractérisation précise des silicites (silex, chert, silcrète, jaspéroïde) dans leur contexte géologique revêt une importance toute particulière en ce qu’elle permet de dessiner des espaces parcourus (parfois sur de très grandes étendues) et, couplée à la technologie lithique, d’identifier des modes de transport des artefacts. Ces réalités renseignent sur les formes sociales et les régimes de mobilité des groupes humains, permettant de matérialiser des processus d’interaction qui mettent parfois en jeu des entités culturelles perçues comme distinctes.Si la région Centre-Val-de-Loire a depuis longtemps servi de moteur aux réflexions sur la diffusion des silicites, les travaux passés n’étaient plus en mesure de répondre aux problématiques de la recherche actuelle en pétroarchéologie. En réponse à cet état de fait, le PCR développe depuis 2016 cinq principaux axes :- Axe 1 : Inventaire, développement et enrichissement de l’outil lithothèque ;- Axe 2 : Méthodologie : Caractérisation dynamique des silicites de l’espace régional ;- Axe 3 : Cartographie des formations à silicites ;- Axe 4 : Applications archéologiques ;- Axe 5 : Diffusion et valorisation des connaissances dans et en dehors du PCR ;Ces axes sont amendés régulièrement dans le but de répondre aux attentes de la communauté des préhistoriens. Toutes nos initiatives vont dans ce sens et sont rendues possibles par une convergence d’actions interdisciplinaires qui nous pousse, non seulement à un renouvellement méthodologique permanent en profondeur, mais également à une réflexion épistémologique sur l’évolution de nos démarches en termes de limites des approches considérées (techniques, conceptuelles ou théoriques) et d’impacts sur les autres champs de recherche ou questionnements de la préhistoire (tracéologie, techno-économie, notion de site, notion de territoire, cartographie, modalité d’enregistrement et de traitement des données…).
