The construction of the Peribonka dam has involved deep compaction of its foundation using vibroflotation and dynamic compaction. Due to the presence of gravel and cobble-size particles, surface wave testing was used in addition to classical tests (cone penetration tests (CPTs) and standard penetration tests) for the assessment of compaction. More than 900 shear wave velocity ([V.sub.s]) profiles down to bedrock or to a maximum depth of 50 m were determined using 'modal analysis of surface waves' (MASW). The large number of [V.sub.s] profiles, before and after compaction, has allowed a good evaluation of the compaction performance and offered, at the same time, a unique opportunity to demonstrate the potential of surface waves in geotechnical investigations. La construction du barrage de Peribonka a necessite la compaction profonde de sa fondation par compaction par vibroflotation et dynamique. En raison de la presence de particules de gravier et de cailloux, des essais d'ondes de surface ont ete utilises en plus des essais classiques (essais de penetration au cone (<< CPT >>) et essais standard de penetration) pour l'evaluation de la compaction. L'analyse modale des ondes de surface (<< MASW >>) a ete utilisee pour determiner plus de 900 profils de vitesse d'ondes de cisaillement ([V.sub.s]) jusqu'au roc ou jusqu'a une profondeur maximale de 50 m. La grande quantite de profils de [V.sub.s], avant et apres la compaction, a permis de bien evaluer la performance de la compaction, et a offer! en parallele une occasion unique de demontrer le potentiel des ondes de surface dans les applications geotechniques.
