Recent research suggests that the fertility-education relationship may be mediated by the educational attainment of the partner, especially among the tertiary-educated. However, there are no studies focusing on the couple-education-fertility nexus among couples who achieved only basic educational attainment, even though resource pooling theory predicts differences in family formation by couples’ joint levels of socio-economic resources. We address this research gap and investigate how educational pairings among married and cohabiting partners relate to second and third birth transitions across 22 European countries, using data from the EU-SILC (European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions) panel and discrete time event history models. Our findings show significantly lower second and third birth transition rates among homogamous low-educated couples compared to heterogamous couples with one low- and one medium or highly-educated partner in the Nordic countries, but not across the rest of Europe. However, couples with one or two low-educated partners have significantly lower second birth rates compared with couples with two highly-educated partners in all European regions.

This paper examines the family policy reforms of 2007 in Russia that were aimed explicitly at encouraging second and higher-order births, and analyses their impact on fertility. The existing empirical findings about population policy interventions in transition economies are inconclusive, while the most common argument states that policies based on material incentives are insufficient to significantly raise the real fertility in a population. The study aims to offer a better insight to the following research question: was Russian demographic policy effective in terms of raising the fertility level in the country or did it merely change the timing of births? The objective of the paper is to measure two effects of the pronatalist policy in Russia: tempo effect and quantum effect. Using data from the Human Fertility Database, I employ the decomposition method to separate tempo and quantum effects in the observed total fertility rate, and I estimate their relative weight in observed fertility changes. The analysis of period fertility indicators confirmed the prevalence of a tempo effect in observed total fertility rate change, but also revealed a quantum effect of the policy measures, although this was much smaller. Policy impact varied by birth order. For second parity, the tempo effect played a more critical role, while for third parity the quantum effect was more important. Another decomposition approach employed to measure the contributions of various factors in the increase of the number of births during the post-reform period showed the quantum effect which was driven by second and third order births. The study provides empirical evidence of the impact of policies on fertility behaviour, expands the existing analysis of pronatalist measures taken in Russia, and contributes to our understanding of the role of tempo and quantum effects in the recent fertility change in Russia.

Im Rahmen der Digitalisierung wird die Quantifizierung Lernender zunehmend relevant. Ob durch E-Klausuren oder Weblogs, E-Portfolios oder Wikis - das Lernsubjekt avanciert zu einem leistungsorientiert vermessenen und kategorisierten Selbst. Nach dem Mythos genereller Messbarkeit soll es normierend dingfest gemacht werden. Doch wirklich qualifiziert ist es auch im universitären Kontext nicht nur als ein Ausbildungs-, sondern vor allem als ein Bildungssubjekt, das digitale Subjektivierungspraktiken problematisieren und in Frage stellen kann, um die Ambivalenzen und Divergenzen des Digitalen zwischen Fremdbemächtigung und Selbstermächtigung, Kontrolle und Kreativität, Verfügung und Vernunft aufdecken, aber auch gezielt bildungsrelevant nutzen zu können. Kritische Bildung bedeutet dann nicht einen Abgesang an das Digitale, sondern fragt nach einem sinn- und verantwortungsvollen Umgang mit diesem - im Ausgang von einem Bildungssubjekt, dessen Kreativität und Urteilskompetenz letztlich nicht quantifizierbar sind und gerade darum die Qualität digitaler Bildung fördern können. The current media environment is primarily characterised by a large amount of information and, in contrast, rather fragmented audience attention. This is especially true for social media, particularly Facebook, which have become important news sources for many people. Journalists cannot help but publish content on Facebook if they want to reach the part of their audience that mainly -or even only- consumes news there. On Facebook, journalists are at the mercy of the algorithm that determines the visibility of their content. Because user engagement is a crucial factor in the algorithm, concerns have been raised that journalists are abandoning their normative quality standards to make the news as attractive as possible to the audience - at the expense of media performance. A softened presentation of the news, particularly in Facebook posts, may help achieve this aim, but research on this subject is lacking. The present study analyses this practice of softening the news in four German media outlets’ (BILD, FAZ, Der Spiegel, Tagesschau) political Facebook posts. The results show that the overall level of news softening is low to medium. Furthermore, comparing them to website teasers reveals that news softening is only slightly higher on Facebook (mainly BILD and Der Spiegel), and that there are no converging trends between quality or public service media and tabloid media. Exaggerated fears about news softening are therefore unnecessary. Continued analysis of news softening, as well as ongoing adaption of the concept according to dynamic developments, is nevertheless important.

Trophische Interaktionen tragen wesentlich zur Entwicklung Anomopodae wie beispielsweise Daphnia magna bei. Wasserflöhe wie diese spielen eine wesentliche Rolle in der Süßwasserökologie und Ökotoxikologie. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt auf der Anpassung der Entwicklung von D. magna nach Verabreichung unterschiedlicher Qualitäten und Quantitäten der Grünalgenart Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Außerdem wurden in dieser Studie verschiedene Nahrungsquellen in Bezug auf Wachstum, Lebensdauer, Fortpflanzung und Hungertod untersucht. Darüber hinaus wurden Veränderungen in der Physiologie der Daphniide durch verschiedene molekulare Marker der Enzymaktivität untersucht. Es wurden vier verschiedene Futterbedingungen verabreicht, darunter frische und gefrorene Algenchargen in sowohl niedrigen als auch hohen Konzentrationen. Daphniiden, die mit frischer Algennahrung gefüttert wurden, erwiesen sich als kurzlebiger, wuchsen schneller und produzierten mehr Nachwuchs. Nicht nur die veränderte Algenqualität, sondern auch verabreichte Konzentrationen zeigten Veränderungen in der Physiologie. Höhere Konzentrationen führen zu einer besseren Leistung in Bezug auf Größe, Wachstumsraten, Fortpflanzung und Überleben unter Nahrungsentzug, aber zu einer kürzeren Lebensspanne. Die Enzymaktivitäten von β-Galaktosidase, alkalischer und saurer Phosphatase waren bei niedrigeren Algenkonzentrationen von schlechterer Qualität viel höher. Feeding interactions between trophic levels contribute significantly to the development of planktonic crustacean such as Daphnia magna. These aquatic animals play an essential role in freshwater ecology and ecotoxicology. The focus of this thesis was the examination of developmental modifications of D. magna after administration of different quantity and quality of the chlorophytae species Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. More specific, different food sources in relation to growth, lifespan, reproduction and starvation were assessed in this study. Furthermore, changes in the physiology of daphniids were evaluated through several molecular markers of enzyme activity. Four different food conditions were explored, among them fresh and frozen algae batches in both low and high concentrations. Daphniids fed with fresh algal nutrition proved to have a briefer lifespan, a higher growth rate and produced more offspring as compared to daphniids fed with frozen prepared algal food. Not only altered algal quality, but also quantity showed changes in the physiology of D. magna. Higher concentrations lead to better performance in terms of size, growth rates, reproduction and survival at starvation, but a briefer lifespan. Enzyme activities of β-galactosidase, alkaline and acid phosphatase were much more elevated for lower algae concentrations of poor quality.

Educational largescale assessments risk their temporal comparability when shifting from paper to computerbased assessment. A recent study showed how text responses have altered alongside PISA's mode change, indicating mode effects. Uncertainty remained, however, because it compared students from 2012 and 2015. We aimed at reproducing the findings in an experimental setting, in which n = 836 students answered PISA reading questions on computer, paper, or both. Text response features for information quantity and relevance were extracted automatically. Results show a comprehensive recovery of findings. Students incorporated more information into their text responses on computer than on paper, with some items being more affected than others. Regarding information relevance, we found less mode effect variance across items than the original study. Hints for a relationship between mode effect and gender across items could be reproduced. The study demonstrates the stability of linguistic feature extraction from text responses. (DIPF/Orig.)

Doch erst im 20. Jahrhundert öffnete sich das Feld der Vermessung auch für abstrakte Dinge wie Wirtschaftswachstum, Gesundheit oder Glück. catalaAmb l’objectiu d’observar si existeix relacio entre la carrega externa i el disseny dels diferents exercicis de l’entrenament en relacio amb els nivells d’aproximacio, l’espai, l’oposicio i el tipus de joc, es realitza un estudi prospectiu, observacional i descriptiu per 15 sessions d’entrenament d’un equip de Copa Catalunya dins del periode competitiu durant la temporada 2017-2018. De cada sessio d’entrenament es registra la carrega externa mitjancant accelerometria (Polar Pro Team) i s’analitzen dels exercicis realitzats (n = 18) amb les seguents variables: acceleracions de nivell 1 (A-1), 0.5 a 0.99 m/s2; acceleracions de nivell 2 (A-2) 1 a 1.99 m/s2; acceleracions de nivell 3 (A-3), 22 a 2.99 m/s2; acceleracions de nivell 4 (A-4), 3 a 50 m/s2; desacceleracions de nivell 1 (D-1), –0.5 a –0.99 m/s2; desacceleracions de nivell 2 (D-2), –1 a –1.99 m/s2; desacceleracions de nivell 3 (D-3), –2 a –2.99 m/s2 i desacceleracions de nivell 4 (D-4), –3 a –50 m/s2. Posteriorment es realitza una analisi descriptiva de tendencia central i es relacionen les variables de carrega externa, amb els nivells d’aproximacio, l’espai, l’oposicio i el tipus de joc mitjancant la Rho de Spearman. S’observen relacions significatives entre el nivell III d’aproximacio amb el Total A-D 3 (rho = –0.727; p = .001) i Total A-D 3-4 (rho = –0.727; p = .001). Tambe s’han trobat tendencies en la relacio del nivell III d’aproximacio amb A-3, D-3 i per a l’oposicio amb D-3, Total A-D 3 i A-D 3-4. Els resultats podrien suggerir que, en aquest context concret, els nivells d’aproximacio III i IV, aixi com l’oposicio, els exercicis de tir i el joc reduit guarden relacio amb la intensitat (qualitat) i volum (quantitat) de la carrega externa de l’entrenament. El control de la carrega externa mitjancant accelerometria pot ser una eina util per al disseny i la programacio de la carrega de l’entrenament i la seva intensitat. EnglishIn order to observe if there is a relationship between external load and the design of the different training exercises in relation to the levels of approach, space, opposition and type of game, a prospective, observational and descriptive study was carried out in 15 training sessions of a Copa Catalunya team during the competitive period of the 2017-2018 season. From each training session, external load was recorded by accelerometry (Polar Pro Team) and the exercises performed (n = 18) were analysed with the following variables: level-1 accelerations (A-1), 0.5 to 0.99 m/s2; level-2 accelerations (A-2) 1 to 1.99 m / s2; level-3 accelerations (A-3), 2 to 2.99 m/s2; level-4 accelerations (A-4), 3 to 50 m/s2; level-1 decelerations (D-1), –0.5 to –0.99 m / s2; level-2 decelerations (D-2), –1 to –1.99 m / s2, level-3 decelerations (D-3), –2 to –2.99 m / s2 and level-4 decelerations (D-4), -3 to -50 m/s2. Subsequently, a descriptive analysis of the central tendency was carried out and the external load variables were related to the levels of approach, space, opposition and the type of game through Spearman’s Rho. Significant relationships were observed between level III of approach with Total A-D 3 (rho = –0.727, p = .001) and Total A-D 3-4 (rho = –0.727, p = .001). Trends were also found in the relationship between level III of approach and A-3, D-3 and for opposition with D-3, Total A-D 3 and A-D 3-4. The results could suggest, in this specific context, that levels of approach III and IV, as well as opposition, shooting exercises and small games are related to the intensity (quality) and volume (quantity) of external load during practices. Control of external load by accelerometry can be a useful tool when designing and programming the training load and its intensity.

Se describe el comportamiento de la tasa de delincuencia a partir de la cohesión social. Se toma como referencia la teoría general de sistemas y tiene como elemento base el cálculo con geometría analítica, pues a través de esta herramienta matemática pudo predecirse teóricamente que el nivel de cohesión es un factor detonante del dinamismo de la tasa de delincuencia, es decir, "a mayor cohesión social, menor tasa de delincuencia". This article gives a description of the behavior of the crime rate from the social cohesion, by reference to the General Systems Theory and having as a base element calculations with analytical geometry. While using this mathematical tool it was predicted theoretically that the level of cohesion is a trigger factor of the dynamism of the crime rate, so it means that "the greater the social cohesion, the lower the crime rate". Zusammenfassung Es gehort gleichsam zum guten Ton der jungeren Debatte zu Jugendkriminalitat, vor einer Dramatisierung zu warnen. Nur eine kleine Gruppe von Tatern sei fur eine relativ grose Zahl an Delikten verantwortlich, wahrend die Mehrheit der Delinquenten nur episodische und wenig dramatische Taten verube. In der Kriminalpolitik wird diese Differenzierung zunehmend berucksichtigt und auf besondere Weise ausbuchstabiert. Es zeigt sich eine Tendenz zu einer Bifurkation, d.h. eine Unterscheidung relativ alltaglicher gegenuber als besonders „bedrohlich“ eingestufter Formen von Kriminalitat. Eines der zentralen Symptome einer derartigen Kriminalpolitik ist ihr Fokus auf „Intensivtater“, die als drangendes Problem von Kriminalpolitik und Strafverfolgung wahrgenommen werden. Der Beitrag problematisiert diese Kategorie aus einer empirischen Sicht. Ihr wird entgegen gehalten, dass Jugendkriminalitat als prinzipiell plastische und durch institutionelle Verfahrensweisen gepragte Erscheinung in den Blick genommen werden sollte. It has been established that only a small group of offenders is associated with a comparatively large amount of offenses, whereas the delinquency of a majority of youths is episodic and petty. This perspective has found its way into the criminal justice system through ‘bifurcation’, the differentiation of unexceptional offenses from crime that seems to be markedly ‘dangerous’. A crucial symptom of this tendency is a focus on ‘Intensivtater’ (chronic offenders) who are depicted as a chronic problem within the criminal justice system. This study discusses the concept of ‘Intensivtater’ critically from an empirical point of view. In contrast to this concept, youth crime should always be seen as a malleable phenomenon that is influenced by institutional factors. This paper deals with the fertility transition, one of the two essential components of the demographic transition. The analysis demonstrates that by applying the cohort perspective new insights are obtained about how the fertility transition unfolded. Within the overall framework of the fertility transition there were four distinct pathways of fertility trends. Combining these findings with those of other scholars shows that the demographic transition has not yet led to an equilibrium of relatively stable low mortality and stable low fertility. The four fertility transition pathways are the following: (1) The Western fertility transition pathway characterized by major cohort total fertility rate (CTFR) fluctuations; (2) the South European fertility transition pathway characterized by an almost uninterrupted CTFR decline; (3) the Central and East European fertility transition pathway characterized by stable CTFRs in the 1920s to 1950s cohorts and a decline in the 1960s and 1970s cohorts; (4) the East and South-East Asia fertility transition pathway characterized by a late start in the mid-20th century with rapidly declining CTFRs. The exploration of societal conditions shaping fertility trends in the 19th and 20th centuries confirms Notestein’s conclusions that the causes are a complex combination of “technological, social, economic, and political developments” as well as cultural and ideational effects, and that it is “impossible to be precise about the various causal factors”. At times the primary factors were economic, as in the Great Depression of the 1930s and the 1960s post-war prosperity in Western countries. However, these economic factors also had many political, cultural, social, policy and other important facets. In Central and Eastern Europe the primary factors during the era of state socialism were the political system and social policies. Dieser Artikel setzt die Polizeiliche Kriminalstatistik in Bezug zur Bevölkerungsstatistik. Es wird für verschiedene Nationalitäten untersucht, wie hoch der Anteil an Tatverdächtigen aus den jeweiligen Ländern ist. So gibt es Länder von denen mehr als 50% innerhalb eines Jahres tatverdächtig waren, das heisst mehr als jeder zweite sich in Deutschland befindliche Staatsangehörige aus diesen Ländern war 2016 tatverdächtig. Am anderen Ende des Spektrums gibt es Länder von denen weniger als 1% aller sich in Deutschland befindlichen Staatsangehörigen 2016 tatverdächtig waren. Ein detaillierter Vergleich verschiedener Straftatskategorien wie Sexualstraftaten oder Diebstahl zeigt, um wieviel häufiger Staatsangehörige einzelner Ländern in diese Straftaten involviert sind als Deutsche. Eine Analyse der Ausländerkriminalität von 2012 bis 2016 deutet dabei auf eine bedenkliche Entwicklung hin. Ohne Ursachenforschung zu betreiben, bietet dieser Artikel eine differenzierte Analyse der Ausländerkriminalität in Deutschland, ohne die übliche Verallgemeinerung oder Pauschalisierung bezüglich dem „Ausländer“ oder dem „Flüchtling“ . So gibt es starke Hinweise darauf, dass der überproportional hohe Anteil von Ausländern an den Tatverdächtigen nicht am ausländischen Aussehen und daraus resultierenden Vorurteilen liegt und sich auch nicht mit jungen ausländischen Männern erklären lässt. Ebenso scheint Armut kein entscheidender Faktor für den höheren Anteil zu sein. Unsere Untersuchung deutet darauf hin, dass Nationalität anders als bisher vermutet von grösserer Bedeutung ist

La métaphysique du temps constitue le cœur de l’opposition entre les philosophies de Bergson et de Kant. A travers le cas particulier de la musique, l’article développe l’idée que ces deux métaphysiques antagonistes engendrent deux esthétiques musicales opposées. La musique est un art non-représentatif. Son caractère non-référentiel implique un certain discrédit chez Kant, à l’inverse de Bergson pour qui elle possède un pouvoir de révélation du réel en soi, en tant que durée. Kant conçoit la musique à travers l’application de la catégorie de quantité à la sensation et au jugement de goût, là où Bergson fait de la musique un flux qualitatif. Enfin, l’article étudie les conséquences métaphysiques de ces deux esthétiques musicales. Si pour Kant la temporalité implique une coupure entre l’art et le noumène qui ne peut alors se sensibiliser que de façon symbolique, Bergson saisit dans l’art l’expression d’un pouvoir d’entraînement semblable à celui de l’énergie spirituelle que manifestent les grands hommes., The metaphysics of time constitutes the heart of the opposition between Bergson and Kant’s philosophy. Through the particular case of music, the article develops the idea that these two opposing metaphysics generate two opposing musical aesthetics. Music is a non-representational art. Its non-referential nature implies some disrepute in Kant, unlike Bergson for whom it has a power of revelation of reality in itself, as duration. Kant conceives music through the application of the category of quantity to sensation and to judgment of taste, when Bergson makes music a qualitative flow. Finally, the article examines the metaphysical consequences of these two musical aesthetics. If for Kant temporality implies a cut-out between art and noumenon, which can then become sensible only symbolically, Bergson seized in art the expression of a power of training similar as spiritual energy that great men show., Die Metaphysik der Zeit ist der Kern des Antagonismus zwischen den Philosophie von Bergson und Kant. Am besonderen Fall der Musik entwickelt dieser Aufsatz die Idee, dass diese beiden antagonistische Metaphysiken zwei gegensätzliche Musikästhetiken erzeugen. Musik ist eine nicht-darstellende Kunst. Ihre nicht-referenzielle Natur bringt sie bei Kant in Verruf, im Gegensatz zu Bergson, für den sie, als Dauer, ermöglicht die Realität an sich zu offenbaren.Kant begreift die Musik durch die Anwendung der Quantitätkategorie an die Anschauung und an das Geschmacksurteil, während für Bergson Musik eine qualitativer Fluxus ist. Schließlich untersucht dieser Ausatz die metaphysischen Konsequenzen dieser beiden Musikästhetiken. Für Kant bedeutet Zeitlichkeit eine Trennung zwischen der Kunst und dem Noumenon, der sich dann nur symbolisch versinnlichen kann. Bergson begreift in der Kunst den Ausdruck einer der geistigen Energie der grossen Männer ähnlichen Antriebskraft .

Kriminalstatistiken gehören zu den ältesten kontinuierlich erhobenen Sozialindikatoren. Ihre Geschichte reicht bis ins frühe 19. Jahrhundert zurück, als die Justizbehörden einiger deutscher Länder nach französischem und englischem Vorbild begannen, Kriminalstatistiken zu führen und zu veröffentlichen (Heinz 1990). Für die Moralstatistiker des 19. Jahrhunderts waren diese Kriminalstatistiken wichtige Datenquellen, um 'Urtheile über den sittlichen Zustand des Volkes' (Starke 1882: S. 4) zu fällen. In mechanism design, Myerson regularity is often too weak for a quantitative analysis of performance. For instance, ratios between revenue and welfare, or sales probabilities may vanish at the boundary of Myerson regularity. This paper therefore explores the quantitative version of Myerson regularity, which we call λ-regularity. It measures how Myerson regular a distribution is. In doing so, we unify separate literatures in economics, computer science, applied mathematics and statistics. The concept has appeared before, e.g., under the names of ρ-concavity and α-strong-regularity. We provide many new results for quantitative auction and mechanism design. (author's abstract)
