Abstract

Background: The development of biofuels, especially liquid hydrocarbon fuels, has been widely concerned due to the depletion of fossil resources. In order to obtain fuel precursors, the reaction of C–C bond formation is usually carried out with biomass derived ketones/aldehydes as reactants. Acetoin and 2,3-butanediol are two platform chemicals, which are co-existed in fermentation broth and traditionally separated by distillation, and then acetoin could be use as C4 building block to prepare hydrocarbon fuels. In order to mitigate the process complexity, direct aldol condensation reaction of acetoin in fermentation broth was studied in this work. Results: A one-pot process of product separation and acetoin derivative synthesis was proposed based on salting-out extraction (SOE). Aldol condensation reaction of acetoin and 5-methyl furfural in different SOE systems was compared, and the results showed that the synthesis of C10 fuel precursors and separation of C10 products and 2,3-butanediol from fermentation broth were achieved in one-pot with ethanolammonium butyrate (EOAB) and K2HPO4 as SOE reagents and catalysts. The SOE and reaction conditions such as the concentrations of EOAB and K2HPO4, reaction temperature and time were optimized. When the system was composed of 6 wt% EOAB-44 wt% K2HPO4 and the mixture was stirred for 6 h at 200 rpm, 40 ℃, the yield of C10 products was 80.7%, and 95.5% 2,3-butanediol was distributed to the top EOAB-rich phase. The exploration of reaction mechanism showed that an imine intermediate was rapidly formed and the subsequent C10 product formation was the key step for aldol condensation reaction. Conclusions: With EOAB and K2HPO4 as SOE reagents and catalysts, one-pot synthesis of fuel precursor from acetoin fermentation broth was achieved without prior purification. A yield of 80.7% for C10 products was obtained which was accumulated at the interface of two aqueous-phase, and 95.5% 2,3-BD was distributed to the top EOAB-rich phase. Abstract

In this report, a novel nanocomposite of highly dispersed Au nanoparticles deposited on NH2-MIL-125(Ti) was designed and proposed as a peroxidase-like mimic. Compared with individual Au nanoparticles and NH2-MIL-125(Ti), the peroxidase-like nanozyme exhibits enhanced peroxidase-like activity. Moreover, kinetic analysis reveals that the as-prepared nanozyme has lower Km values and stronger affinity towards both substrates than the natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The detection limits of the multifunctional platform for H2O2, cysteine and Hg2+ are down to 0.24 μM, 0.14 μM and 100 nM, respectively. This work provides rapid and sensitive colorimetric detection strategies for small biomolecules and Hg2+, which have great potential for application in biosensors and biotechnology.

Abstract

Development of antimicrobial nanomaterials is one of the most attractive strategies for eliminating the major threat of pathogenic bacteria to public health. In this work, we developed a simple impregnation-reduction method for the synthesis of Ag-doped hierarchical ZIF-8 (Ag/H-ZIF-8) nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was characterized by several techniques and its antibacterial activity was investigated. The Ag nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed in the porous ZIF-8 with narrow size distribution. Consequently, the resulting Ag/H-ZIF-8 nanocomposite showed significantly enhanced antibacterial activities compared to the single ZIF-8 or Ag nanoparticles. Furthermore, the composite is biocompatible, because no obvious toxicity was observed on Hepatic epithelial cells. This study offers a new approach for the design of hybrid antimicrobial nanomaterials that have great potentials in practical disinfections

Abstract

Many efforts have been devoted to the integration of magnetic nanoparticles and metal organic frameworks, which makes it easy and simple to separate the nano-sized metal organic frameworks from liquid phase. Amino-functionalized magnetic metal organic frameworks[Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe)-NH2] were prepared by a stepwise assembly method followed by post-modification with electron-rich reagent. This magnetic catalyst was characterized by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and nitrogen adsorption, and tested in Knoevenagel condensation as a base catalyst. The magnetic catalyst exhibits a core-shell structure and can afford a high activity for the Knoevenagel condensation due to its bifunctional property and reduced diffusion limitation. Furthermore, it could be recovered magnetically and recycled three times. Although activity loss was observed in the recycle experiments, it could be reactivated by dispersing in a fresh modifier solution.
