SRB loading inside the core of micelles was governed by the drug:poloxamer weight ratio, while in the case of the SRB–VP combination, a mutual interference between the two drugs occurred and only specific ratios could ensure maximum loading efficiency. Coentrapment of SRB did not alter the photophysical properties of VP, confirming that SRB did not participate in any bimolecular process with the photosensitizer. Fluorescence resonance energy-transfer measurement of micelles in serum protein-containing cell-culture medium demonstrated the excellent stability of the system in physiologically relevant conditions. These results were in line with the results of the release study showing a release rate of both drugs in the presence of proteins slower than in phosphate buffer. SRB release was sustained, while VP remained substantially entrapped in the micelle core. Cytotoxicity studies in MDA-MB231 cells revealed that at 24 hours, SRB-loaded micelles were more active than free SRB only at very low SRB concentrations, while at 24+24 hours a prolonged cytotoxic effect of SRB-loaded micelles was observed, very likely mediated by the block in the S phase of the cell cycle. The combination of SRB with VP under light exposure was less cytotoxic than both the free combination and VP-loaded micelles + SRB-loaded micelles combination. This behavior was clearly explainable in terms of micelle uptake and intracellular localization. Besides the clear advantage of delivering SRB in poloxamer micelles, our results provide a clear example that each photochemotherapeutic combination needs detailed investigations on their particular interaction, and no generalization on enhanced cytotoxic effects should be derived a priori. Abstract

The article discusses the use of pembrolizumab as salvage treatment for T-cell/histiocyte-rich and Epstein-Barr virus-positive large B-cell lymphoma. The study evaluated the efficacy of pembrolizumab in seven patients with these lymphoma subtypes who had relapsed or were refractory to standard chemo-immunotherapy. Results showed that most patients achieved complete remission with pembrolizumab, indicating its potential as a therapeutic alternative in patients who do not benefit from CAR T-cell therapy. Further research is needed to explore the use of pembrolizumab in these lymphoma subtypes. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

In this article we present the implementation of an environment supporting L\'evy's \emph{optimal reduction} for the $\lambda$-calculus \cite{Lev78} on parallel (or distributed) computing systems. In a similar approach to Lamping's one in \cite{Lamping90}, we base our work on a graph reduction technique known as \emph{directed virtual reduction} \cite{DPR97} which is actually a restriction of Danos-Regnier virtual reduction \cite{DanosRegnier93}. The environment, which we refer to as PELCR (Parallel Environment for optimal Lambda-Calculus Reduction) relies on a strategy for directed virtual reduction, namely {\em half combustion}, which we introduce in this article. While developing PELCR we have adopted both a message aggregation technique, allowing a reduction of the communication overhead, and a fair policy for distributing dynamically originated load among processors. We also present an experimental study demonstrating the ability of PELCR to definitely exploit parallelism intrinsic to $\lambda$-terms while performing the reduction. By the results we show how PELCR allows achieving up to 70/80% of the ideal speedup on last generation multiprocessor computing systems. As a last note, the software modules have been developed with the {\tt C} language and using a standard interface for message passing, i.e. MPI, thus making PELCR itself a highly portable software package.

Abstract

In medical ultrasound scanning applications PMUT (Piezo Micromachined Ultrasound transducers) need to be assembled along with the ASIC devices that drive the PMUT devices in transmission and receive the reflected ultrasound signal. To produce a sufficiently high resolution image, a large number of interconnections are required between the PMUT device and the companion ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) which is done using Cu pillar technology. This integration of Ultrasound Transducers using wafer level bonding between the traducer and the ASIC wafer has already been demonstrated [1]. This process suffers from the problem of yield if a non functioning transducer is bonded to a functioning ASIC or vice versa, and it also requires the ASIC die to be the same dimensions of the traducer die. In this article we will present a solution where known good ASIC die are assembled in a FOWLP (Fan Out wafer level Package) with known good PMUT device assembled using Cu pillar technology allowing for the optimisation of the ASIC for size/yield while still maintain the performance of the transducer required. Verification of the assembly flow has been done using a dummy die to ensure that the fully assembled FOWLP is practicable.

Abstract

Whether it is for audit or for recovery purposes, data checkpointing is an important problem of distributed database systems. Actually, transactions establish dependence relations on data checkpoints taken by data object managers. So, given an arbitrary set of data checkpoints (including at least a single data checkpoint from a data manager, and at most a data checkpoint from each data manager), an important question is the following one: ``Can these data checkpoints be members of a same consistent global checkpoint?''. This paper answers this question by providing a necessary and sufficient condition suited for database systems. Moreover, to show the usefulness of this condition, two {\em non-intrusive} data checkpointing protocols are derived from this condition. It is also interesting to note that this paper, by exhibiting ``correspondences'', establishes a bridge between the data object/transaction model and the process/message-passing model., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

This paper reports on the development of a fully integrated 4-channel analog front-end (AFE) transceiver designed for 1-D PMUT arrays operating in the 1-10 MHz range. The single channel consisted of a transceiver featuring a transmit (TX) pulser capable of delivering 100 mathbf{V}-{mathbf{pk}-mathbf{pk}}, 3-level pulses with independently programmable delay and duration followed by a T/R switch, and a receive (RX) chain comprising a programmable gain Low Noise voltage Amplifier (LNA) and a Buffer. Chip prototypes were fabricated using a 165nm BCD-SOI technology. Electrical and acoustic tests of the AFE were carried out in conjunction with a 2.5MHz, 80% fractional bandwidth, 64-element 1-D PMUT array fabricated using a sol-gel PZT thin film-based technology. Hydrophone and pulse-echo experiments were carried out in a water tank setup using a custom designed test board. Electrical characterization of the LNA reported a 0.65-40 MHz -3dB band, an equivalent input noise voltage density of 13 mathbf{nV}/surd Hz at 3 MHz at the maximum gain, and a power consumption of 5.4 mW/ch. The large signal TX pressure response of 4 adjacent PMUT array elements driven by 20Vpk, 3-cycle, 2MHz pulses was estimated at the transducer surface, resulting in a peak negative pressure of 543 kPa with a second harmonic distortion of -30 dB. Small signal TX pressure and pulse-echo impulse responses were processed to extract the transfer function of the RX chain, which is characterized by a peak sensitivity of 55 mV/ kPa at 2.3 MHz.

Abstract

Determination of shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) radiation from space is fundamental in regions where few surface observations are available. In the Arctic this is particularly important due to the complex feedback mechanisms affecting climate in this region. Few sites located in the Arctic region provide surface radiation flux (SRF) measurements long enough to conduct systematic comparisons with satellite products capturing the seasonality of atmospheric and surface parameters.Long-term measurements of downward and upward SW (DSI and USI) and LW irradiances (DLI and ULI) are carried out at the Thule High Arctic Atmospheric Observatory (THAAO, 76.5° N, 68.8° W, https://www.thuleatmos-it.it), in North-Western Greenland. DSI and DLI measurements were started in 2009, and USI and ULI in 2016.In this analysis the four SRF components have been compared with monthly and daily Level 3 Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) surface products , with the aiming of assessing the agreement between ground-based and satellite-derived radiation data.The comparison of THAAO measurements with the monthly CERES products shows a general good agreement, with a high correlation (R2 about 0.98) and mean negative bias of 4.4 Wm-2 (CERES underestimates in situ) for DSI, and a mean positive bias of 2.3 Wm-2 for DLI, possibly associated to cloud effects. The upward components present lower correlations compared to the downward ones, in particular for USI, partly because THAAO is a coastal site, and the CERES data may be influenced by the different surface reflective and emissive properties of land, ice, and sea., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

We report preliminary wafer level measurement results of air coupled mathrm S mathrm c 0 15 mathrm A mathrm l 0 85 mathrm N pMUTs recently fabricated in our Lab in Fab 8 inch line In this work we show that the mathrm K mathrm t 2 and mechanical performance of the devices are correlated to the resonant frequency in connection to film stress At lower film stresses the electromechanical coupling mathrm K mathrm t 2 can reach typical values of 3 While ScAlN based pMUTs of similar levels of doping concentration have been reported previously mathrm K mathrm t 2 has been limited to approximately 2 1 In this work the effects of varying tensile film stress have been recorded to show drastic changes to Kt2 causing variations on the wafer level from 0 5 to 3 in relation to the induced local stress The effect on the resonant frequency of the device was also recorded ranging from 157kHz to 215kHz These effects were also validated mechanically under an LDV that show displacement transfer variations of 224 to 557nm V whereby the transfer is inversely proportional to the amount of tensile stress

We report preliminary wafer level measurement results of air coupled phase vapor deposition PVD PZT pMUTs for ranging applications recently fabricated in our Lab in Fab 8 inch line Dual port PVD PZT pMUTs designed to resonate in the 100kHz range were fabricated based on a boldsymbol 2 mu mathbf m thick PZT film on a boldsymbol 4 mu mathbf m thick silicon diaphragm The standard deviation of the PZT stack capacitance was 2 across the wafer Despite the sensitivity of compliant diaphragms to film residual stress the standard deviation of frequency was 5 Out of 16 sites across wafer probed all devices were verified to be in good working condition Given the strong piezoelectric constant of the PZT film mathbf e boldsymbol 31 mathbf f boldsymbol sim 16 mathbf C mathbf m boldsymbol 2 and compliance of the diaphragm designed for ranging applications we demonstrate large tunability in frequency 120 210kHz mathbf K mathbf t boldsymbol 2 1 7 3 and quality factor 50 100 for a bias voltage range of0 40V Results have been obtained without poling of the PVD PZT film No unresponsive devices were found

Abstract

Background: Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) may be more susceptible to COVID-19 related poor outcomes, including thrombosis and death, due to the advanced age, the presence of comorbidities, and the disease and treatment-related immune deficiency. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of thrombosis and bleeding in patients with CLL affected by severe COVID-19. Methods: This is a retrospective multicenter study conducted by ERIC, the European Research Initiative on CLL, including patients from 79 centers across 22 countries. Data collection was conducted between April and May 2021. The COVID-19 diagnosis was confirmed by the real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay for SARS-CoV-2 on nasal or pharyngeal swabs. Severe cases of COVID-19 were defined by hospitalization and the need of oxygen or admission into ICU. Development and type of thrombotic events, presence and severity of bleeding complications were reported during treatment for COVID-19. Bleeding events were classified using ISTH definition. STROBE recommendations were used in order to enhance reporting. Results: A total of 793 patients from 79 centers were included in the study with 593 being hospitalized (74.8%). Among these, 511 were defined as having severe COVID: 162 were admitted to the ICU while 349 received oxygen supplementation outside the ICU. Most patients (90.5%) were receiving thromboprophylaxis. During COVID-19 treatment, 11.1% developed a thromboembolic event, while 5.0% experienced bleeding. Thrombosis developed in 21.6% of patients who were not receiving thromboprophylaxis, in contrast to 10.6% of patients who were on thromboprophylaxis. Bleeding episodes were more frequent in patients receiving intermediate/therapeutic versus prophylactic doses of low-molecular-weight heparin (LWMH) (8.1% vs. 3.8%, respectively) and in elderly. Abstract

One of the main issues in the treatment of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) deals with the choice between continuous or fixed-duration therapy. Continuous ibrutinib (IB), the first-in-class BTK inhibitor, and obinutuzumab-chlorambucil (G-CHL) are commonly used therapies for elderly and/or comorbid patients. No head-to-head comparison has been carried out. Within the Italian campus CLL network, we performed a retrospective study on CLL patients without TP53 disruption treated with IB or G-CHL as first-line therapy. Patients in the G-CHL arm had a higher CIRS score and the worst renal function. The overall response rates between the G-CHL and IB arms were similar, but more complete remissions (CRs) were achieved with G-CHL (p = 0.0029). After a median follow-up of 30 months, the progression-free survival (PFS, p = 0.0061) and time to next treatment (TTNT, p = 0.0043), but not overall survival (OS, p = 0.6642), were better with IB than with G-CHL. Similar results were found after propensity score matching and multivariate analysis. While PFS and TTNT were longer with IB than with G-CHL in IGHV unmutated patients (p = 0.0190 and 0.0137), they were superimposable for IGHV mutated patients (p = 0.1900 and 0.1380). In the G-CHL arm, the depth of response (79% vs. 68% vs. 38% for CR, PR and SD/PD; p < 0.0001) and measurable residual disease (MRD) influenced PFS (78% vs. 53% for undetectable MRD vs. detectable MRD, p = 0.0203). Hematological toxicities were common in the G-CHL arm, while IB was associated with higher costs. Although continuous IB provides better disease control in CLL, IGHV mutated patients and those achieving an undetectable MRD show a marked clinical and economic benefit from a fixed-duration obinutuzumab-based treatment.

Abstract

Since December 2019, the world has been facing the life-threatening disease, named Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), recognized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. The response of the Emergency Medicine network, integrating "out-of-hospital" and "hospital" activation, is crucial whenever the health system has to face a medical emergency, being caused by natural or human-derived disasters as well as by a rapidly spreading epidemic outbreak. We here report the Pavia Emergency Medicine network response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The "out-of-hospital" response was analysed in terms of calls, rescues and missions, whereas the "hospital" response was detailed as number of admitted patients and subsequent hospitalisation or discharge. The data in the first 5 weeks of the Covid-19 outbreak (February 21-March 26, 2020) were compared with a reference time window referring to the previous 5 weeks (January 17-February 20, 2020) and with the corresponding historical average data from the previous 5 years (February 21-March 26). Since February 21, 2020, a sudden and sustained increase in the calls to the AREU 112 system was noted (+ 440%). After 5 weeks, the number of calls and missions was still higher as compared to both the reference pre-Covid-19 period (+ 48% and + 10%, respectively) and the historical control (+ 53% and + 22%, respectively). Owing to the overflow from the neighbouring hospitals, which rapidly became overwhelmed and had to temporarily close patient access, the population served by the Pavia system more than doubled (from 547.251 to 1.135.977 inhabitants, + 108%). To minimize the possibility of intra-hospital spreading of the infection, a separate "Emergency Department-Infective Disease" was created, which evaluated 1241 patients with suspected infection (38% of total ED admissions). Out of these 1241 patients, 58.0% (n = 720) were admitted in general wards (n = 629) or intensive care unit (n = 91). To allow this massive number of admissions, the hospital reshaped many general ward Units, which became Covid-19 Units (up to 270 beds) and increased the intensive care unit beds from 32 to 60. In the setting of a long-standing continuing emergency like the present Covid-19 outbreak, the integration, interaction and team work of the "out-of-hospital" and "in-hospital" systems have a pivotal role. The present study reports how the rapid and coordinated reorganization of both might help in facing such a disaster. AREU-112 and the Emergency Department should be ready to finely tune their usual cooperation to respond to a sudden and overwhelming increase in the healthcare needs brought about by a pandemia like the current one. This lesson should shape and reinforce the future.

Abstract

Nanoparticles (NPs) made up of biodegradable block copolymers offer significant potential in the field of innovative anticancer therapies. However, the accumulation of NPs in tumour cells remains challenging. Surface decoration with targeting ligands recognizing specific receptors that are overexpressed on the cancer cell membrane represents the most common approach, but the effective exposure of the targeting molecule on the NP surface is often limited. An original method to favor the exposure of folate (Fol) as a targeting ligand on the NP surface is reported here. We focused on the introduction in NPs based on a PEG-b-PCL diblock copolymer of Fol-PEG-b-PCL in which the PEG chain is threaded with α-cyclodextrin (αCD). This selectively rotaxanated copolymer (Fol-PEG(αCD)-b-PCL) was prepared from an α,ω-azido-tosyl-PEG(αCD) pseudorotaxane, taking advantage of the different terminal groups of PEG. Fol and the PCL block, which act as caps to prevent αCD dethreading, were covalently linked to PEG with a "one-step"procedure, giving a rotaxanated copolymer with a high yield and a low host coverage (∼9%). The formation of the inclusion complex was confirmed by 2D-DOSY spectroscopy. Rotaxanated copolymers were fully characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, thermal and thermogravimetric analysis, wide angle X-ray diffraction and polarised optical microscopy. Abstract

During COVID-19 pandemic crisis, Italian Government has approved Law Decree no. 18 of 17 March 2020, in which art. 15 allows enterprises to produce, import and commercialize surgical masks notwithstanding the current rules of product certification. It is just required that the interested enterprises send to the Italian National Institute of Health a selfcertification in which they declare the technical characteristics of the masks and that masks are produced according to the safety requirements. In this context, a technical-scientific unit was established at the University of Napoli Federico II to provide interested enterprises with state-of-the-art consultancy, testing and measurement services, adhering to rigorous scientific protocols. Characterization tests were carried out on 163 surgical masks and/or materials for their construction and they have enabled the identification of pre-screening criteria to simplify the procedure for evaluating surgical masks using methods for assessing the filtration efficiency of particles and aerosols. Based on experimental results, it has been observed that a filtration efficiency for particles with sizes larger that 650 nm (PFE>650) exceeding 35% might guarantees a bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) higher than 95% while BFE values higher than 98% are obtained when the PFE>650 is larger than 40%. PFE measurement is extremely simpler with respect to BFE, the latter being time-consuming and requiring specific equipment and methods for its realization. Many tested materials have shown the capability to assure high filtration efficiencies but Spundonded-Meltblown-Spunbonded (SMS), that are layers of non-woven fabric with different weights of Meltblown, can simultaneously guarantee high particle filtration efficiencies with pressure drop values (breathability) in the limits to classify the surgical masks as Type II/IIR. In fact, the fabric products analyzed so far have not been able to simultaneously guarantee adequate BFE and breathability values. On the contrary, Spunbonds of adequate weights can virtually verify both requirements and accredit themselves as possible materials for the production of surgical masks, at least of Type I. Abstract

Because the efficacy of new drugs reported in trials may not translate into similar results when used in the real‐life, we analyzed the efficacy of idelalisib and rituximab (IR) in 149 patients with relapsed/refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia treated at 34 GIMEMA centers. Median progression‐free survival (PFS) and overall survival were 22.9 and 44.5 months, respectively; performance status (PS) ≥2 and ≥3 previous lines of therapy were associated with shorter PFS and overall survival (OS). 48% of patients were on treatment at 12 months; the experience of the centers (≥5 treated patients) and PS 0–1 were associated with a significantly longer treatment duration (p = 0.015 and p = 0.002, respectively). TP53 disruption had no prognostic significance. Abstract

Background: Frailty is a state of increased vulnerability to stressors, associated to poor health outcomes. The aim of this study was to design and introduce a Frailty Index (FI; according to the age-related accumulation of deficit model) in a large cohort of hospitalized older persons, in order to benefit from its capacity to comprehensively weight the risk profile of the individual. Methods: Patients aged 65 and older enrolled in the REPOSI register from 2010 to 2016 were considered in the present analyses. Variables recorded at the hospital admission (including socio-demographic, physical, cognitive, functional and clinical factors) were used to compute the FI. The prognostic impact of the FI on in-hospital and 12-month mortality was assessed. Results: Among the 4488 patients of the REPOSI register, 3847 were considered eligible for a 34-item FI computation. The median FI in the sample was 0.27 (interquartile range 0.21–0.37). The FI was significantly predictive of both in-hospital (OR 1.61, 95%CI 1.38–1.87) and overall (HR 1.46, 95%CI 1.32–1.62) mortality, also after adjustment for age and sex. Conclusions: The FI confirms its strong predictive value for negative outcomes. Its implementation in cohort studies (including those conducted in the hospital setting) may provide useful information for better weighting the complexity of the older person and accordingly design personalized interventions.

Abstract

Objectives To detect possible severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA contamination of inanimate surfaces in areas at high risk of aerosol formation by patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods Sampling was performed in the emergency unit and the sub-intensive care ward. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was extracted from swabbed surfaces and objects and subjected to real-time RT-PCR targeting RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and E genes. Virus isolation from positive samples was attempted in vitro on Vero E6 cells. Results Twenty-six samples were collected and only two were positive for low-level SARS-CoV-2 RNA, both collected on the external surface of continuous positive airway pressure helmets. All transport media were inoculated onto susceptible cells, but none induced a cytopathic effect on day 7 of culture. Conclusions Even though daily contact with inanimate surfaces and patient fomites in contaminated areas may be a medium of infection, our data obtained in real-life conditions suggest that it might be less extensive than hitherto recognized.

Abstract

We describe clinical characteristics, treatments and outcomes of 44 Caucasian patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) at a single hospital in Pavia, Italy, from 21–28 February 2020, at the beginning of the outbreak in Europe. Seventeen patients developed severe disease, two died. After a median of 6 days, 14 patients were discharged from hospital. Predictors of lower odds of discharge were age > 65 years, antiviral treatment and for severe disease, lactate dehydrogenase > 300 mg/dL.

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to assess the role of Tocilizumab therapy (TCZ) in terms of ICU admission and mortality rate of critically ill patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Design: Patients with COVID-19 pneumonia were prospectively enrolled in SMAtteo COvid19 REgistry (SMACORE). A retrospective analysis of patients treated with TCZ matched using propensity score to patients treated with Standard Of Care (SOC) was conducted. Setting: The study was conducted at IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo Hospital, Pavia, Italy, from March 14, 2020 to March 27, 2020. Participants: Patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 hospitalized in our institution at the time of TCZ availability. Interventions: TCZ was administered to 21 patients. The first administration was 8 mg/kg (up to a maximum 800 mg per dose) of Tocilizumab intravenously, repeated after 12 h if no side effects were reported after the first dose. Main Outcomes and Measures: ICU admission and 7-day mortality rate. Secondary outcomes included clinical and laboratory data. Results: There were 112 patients evaluated (82 were male and 30 were female, with a median age of 63.55 years). Using propensity scores, the 21 patients who received TCZ were matched to 21 patients who received SOC (a combination of hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin and prophylactic dose of low weight heparin). No adverse event was detected following TCZ administration. This study found that treatment with TCZ did not significantly affect ICU admission (OR 0.11; 95% CI between 0.00 and 3.38; p = 0.22) or 7-day mortality rate (OR 0.78; 95% CI between 0.06 and 9.34; p = 0.84) when compared with SOC. Analysis of laboratory measures showed significant interactions between time and treatment regarding C-Reactive Protein (CRP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), platelets and international normalized ratio (INR) levels. Variation in lymphocytes count was observed over time, irrespective of treatment. Conclusions: TCZ administration did not reduce ICU admission or mortality rate in a cohort of 21 patients. Additional data are needed to understand the effect(s) of TCZ in treating patients diagnosed with COVID-19.

Abstract

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a disease of the elderly, characterized by immunodeficiency. Hence, patients with CLL might be considered more susceptible to severe complications from COVID-19. We undertook this retrospective international multicenter study to characterize the course of COVID-19 in patients with CLL and identify potential predictors of outcome. Of 190 patients with CLL and confirmed COVID-19 diagnosed between 28/03/2020 and 22/05/2020, 151 (79%) presented with severe COVID-19 (need of oxygen and/or intensive care admission). Severe COVID-19 was associated with more advanced age (≥65 years) (odds ratio 3.72 [95% CI 1.79–7.71]). Only 60 patients (39.7%) with severe COVID-19 were receiving or had recent (≤12 months) treatment for CLL at the time of COVID-19 versus 30/39 (76.9%) patients with mild disease. Hospitalization rate for severe COVID-19 was lower (p < 0.05) for patients on ibrutinib versus those on other regimens or off treatment. Of 151 patients with severe disease, 55 (36.4%) succumbed versus only 1/38 (2.6%) with mild disease; age and comorbidities did not impact on mortality. In CLL, (1) COVID-19 severity increases with age; (2) antileukemic treatment (particularly BTK inhibitors) appears to exert a protective effect; (3) age and comorbidities did not impact on mortality, alluding to a relevant role of CLL and immunodeficiency.

Abstract

Study objective This study investigated in a large sample of in-patients the impact of mild-moderate-severe anaemia on clinical outcomes such as in-hospital mortality, re-admission, and death within three months after discharge. Methods A prospective multicentre observational study, involving older people admitted to 87 internal medicine and geriatric wards, was done in Italy between 2010 and 2012. The main clinical/laboratory data were obtained on admission and discharge. Based on haemoglobin (Hb), subjects were classified in three groups: group 1 with normal Hb, (reference group), group 2 with mildly reduced Hb (10.0–11.9 g/dL in women; 10.0–12.9 g/dL in men) and group 3 with moderately-severely reduced Hb (
