Previous studies reported that the hepatitis C virus (HCV) could help disseminate the hepatitis D virus (HDV) in vivo through hepatitis B virus (HBV)-unrelated ways, but with essentially inconclusive results. To try to shed light on this still-debated topic, 146 anti-HCV-positive subjects (of whom 91 HCV/HIV co-infected, and 43 with prior HCV eradication) were screened for anti-HDV antibodies (anti-HD), after careful selection for negativity to any serologic or virologic marker of current or past HBV infection. One single HCV/HIV co-infected patient (0.7%) tested highly positive for anti-HD, but with no positive HDV-RNA. Her husband, in turn, was a HCV/HIV co-infected subject with a previous contact with HBV. While conducting a thorough review of the relevant literature, the authors attempted to exhaustively describe the medical history of both the anti-HD-positive patient and her partner, believing it to be the key to dissecting the possible complex mechanisms of HDV transmission from one subject to another, and speculating that in the present case, it may have been HCV itself that behaved as an HDV helper virus. In conclusion, this preliminary research, while needing further validation in large prospective studies, provided some further evidence of a role of HCV in HDV dissemination in humans.

Background: In recent years, healthcare systems have progressively adopted several technologies enhancing access to healthcare for older adults and support the delivery of efficient and effective care for this specific population. These technologies include both assistive technologies designed to maintain or improve the independence, social participation and functionality of older people at home, as well as health information technology developed to manage long-term conditions. Examples of such technologies include telehealth, wearable devices and mobile health. However, despite the great promise that health technology holds for promoting independent living among older people, its actual implementation remains challenging., Methods: This study aimed to conduct an integrative systematic review of the research evidence on the factors that facilitate or hinder the adoption of different types of technology by older individuals with chronic diseases. For this purpose, four electronic databases (PsycArticles, Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed) were queried to search for indexed published studies. The methodological quality of the selected papers has been assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT)., Results: Twenty-nine articles were selected, including 6.213 adults aged 60 or older. The studies have been synthesised considering the types of technological interventions and chronic diseases, as well as the main barriers and facilitators in technology acceptance. The results revealed that the majority of the selected articles focused on comorbid conditions and the utilisation of telemedicine tools. With regard to hindering and facilitating factors, five main domains were identified: demographic and socioeconomic, health-related, dispositional, technology-related and social factors., Conclusion: The study results have practical implications not only for technology developers but also for all the social actors involved in the design and implementation of healthcare technologies, including formal and informal caregivers and policy stakeholders. These actors could use this work to enhance their understanding of the utilisation of technology by the ageing population. Background: What leads healthy people to enter in a volunteer register for clinical trials? This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the decision to volunteer in clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine and social capital, in a sample of healthy volunteers in Italy. Since social capital is characterized by trust, reciprocity, and social and political participation, we claim that it is key in leading individuals to actively take action to protect public health, and to take a risk for the (potential) benefit not only of themselves but for the entire community., Methods: This study was conducted through the administration of a questionnaire to healthy volunteers registered for a phase 1 clinical trial for a COVID-19 vaccine in the Unit Research Centre of ASST-Monza, in September 2020. The primary purpose of a phase 1 study is to evaluate the safety of a new drug candidate before it proceeds to further clinical studies. To approximate a case-control study, we randomly matched the 318 respondents to healthy volunteers (cases) with 318 people randomly selected by Round 9 of the European Social Survey (controls), using three variables, which we considered to be associated with the decision to volunteer: gender, age, and education level. To execute this matching procedure, we used the "ccmatch" module in STATA., Results: The findings highlight the positive impact of social capital in the choice of healthy individuals to volunteer in COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials. Controlling for possible confounding factors, some exemplary results show that people with a high level of general trust have a greater likelihood of volunteering compared to people with low trust (OR = 2.75, CI = 1.58-4.77); we also found that it is more probable that volunteers are people who have actively taken action to improve things compared with people who have not (for individuals who did three or more actions: OR = 7.54, CI = 4.10-13.86). People who reported voting (OR = 3.91, CI = 1.70-8.99) and participating in social activities more than other people of their age (OR = 2.89, CI = 1.82-4.60) showed a higher probability to volunteer., Conclusions: Together with the adoption of urgent health measures in response to COVID-19, government policymakers should also promote social capital initiatives to encourage individuals to actively engage in actions aimed at protecting collective health. Our findings make an empirical contribution to the research on vaccines and its intersection with social behaviour, and they provide useful insights for policymakers to manage current and future disease outbreaks and to enhance the enrolment in vaccine trials., (© 2022. Backgrounds: Healthy volunteers play a key role in clinical trials and it is crucial to develop recruitment strategies that capitalise on their motivations and maximise their participation. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the importance of finding motivated healthy volunteers for the development of new vaccines. Public registers represent a promising way to promote the participation of healthy volunteers in the research field, but their adoption is still limited. The current study aimed to explore the motivations of healthy volunteers to enrol in an Italian public register for clinical trials during the COVID-19 pandemic and their attitude toward participating in a phase 1 COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial. The impacts of different enrolling interview modalities (in person, by phone, by mail) on motivation, understanding of information and trust in researchers were also investigated., Methods: An online survey investigating experience with COVID-19, motivations to enrol, trust in researchers, political and healthcare authorities and pharmacological companies was presented to people applying as healthy volunteers in the public register for clinical trials at Phase 1 Unit Research Centre of ASST Monza, Italy, and considering to participate in a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial. Data were collected in June 2021., Results: Altruistic motivations were the main driver for enrolling in the public register, while self-interested motivations were secondary. No gender differences were found. As for enrolling modalities, no differences emerged between in-person and interviews for motivation to enrol, understanding of information and trust in researchers. Email modality led to significantly lower volunteers' satisfaction and understanding of information but similar trust in research., Conclusions: This study supports the validity of different interview modalities (in person and by phone) for the enrolment of healthy volunteers for clinical trials and highlights the positive role of public registers for the recruitment procedures., (© 2022. There has been a growing interest in the study of masculinity and its intersection with health. However, and despite epidemiological data showing men's general disadvantage in health, there are only a few empirical studies that explore men's experiences of chronic illness. Drawing on empirical data collected in qualitative research on masculinity and autoimmune diabetes, this article investigates the multiple ways in which gender may intersect with health, in an attempt to go beyond the widespread thesis that 'masculinity is bad for men's health'. In line with more recent critical perspectives on the study of men's health that have challenged this oversimplistic assumption, this work further problematises masculinity in relation to health and illness. In-depth interviews have been conducted with 40 young/adult diabetic men from working/middle-class backgrounds. The findings show that gender might intersect health in complex ways and diabetic men can embody and re-signify health practices in order to fulfil or redefine dominant ideals of masculinity. Objective: To describe smoking cessation in a group of workers exposed to chemical risk and factors associated; to assess the changes of respiratory function over the years also in relation to risks to which they were exposed., Materials and Methods: We studied employees/students occupationally exposed to chemical risk from whom we also had information about smoking status and who had done a spirometry in all periodic visits and who had at least two periodic medical examinations during the follow-up., Results: Variables significantly associated to the smoking cessation are gender and exposure to biological risk. The changes in Forced Vital Capacity between the last and the first visit were associated to a significant negative correlation, from multivariate analysis, to age and to exposure to the display screen equipment. The Tiffeneau index was significantly positively associated with exposure to display screen equipment and to manual handling of loads; the Forced Expiratory Flow 25-75% was significantly associated with physical risk., Conclusions: A greater awareness on the consequences of smoking is recommended in subjects exposed to chemical risk, especially in women, in addition to a serial monitoring of lung function in order to carry out an early intervention in the first phase of airflow limitation.

The frequent association of chronic hepatitic C virus (HCV) infection and type II mixed cryoglobulinemia is considered to be one of the possible signs of interaction between the virus and the immune system. This could also be the case for the appearance of anti-GOR antibodies in serum, as they react with both viral and host antigens. We studied a group of patients with chronic hepatitis C infection and a group with type II mixed cryoglobulinemia associated with HCV infection to ascertain if anti-GOR or other non-organ specific autoantibodies were present in the serum. We found no significant difference between the two groups in presence, prevalence or titer of anti-GOR or other autoantibodies. Moreover, the expression of anti-GOR does not seem to influence the severity of liver damage. Our data support the hypothesis that anti-GOR antibodies are a simple expression of molecular mimicry between viral and human epitopes.

The recent reports of a very high frequency of signs of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among patients with essential mixed cryoglobulins (EMC) suggest new hypotheses for the pathogenesis of this disease. However, most of these studies have been seriously criticized. The serologic test designed for detection of anti-HCV antibodies (ELISA, RIBA I and II) may yield a significant rate of false-positive results when performed on cryoglobulinemic sera, and the detection of the HCV genome by PCR is still heavily conditioned by practical problems. Indirect, but possibly more reliable, evidence of HCV infection in cryoglobulinemic patients might come from the demonstration of anti-HCV antibodies by a conventional technique (ELISA or RIBA) in the purified polyclonal non-rheumatoid immunoglobulinemic fraction excreted in the urine by glomerular filtration. Fifty-two patients whose serum had tested positive for HCV antibodies (by ELISA and RIBA) on multiple occasions were enrolled in this study. They were diagnosed as having either EMC or HCV chronic hepatitis without cryoglobulinemia at least one year ago. The urine samples of these patients were tested for anti-HCV antibodies by ELISA and RIBA. In patients with chronic C hepatitis the antibodies most frequently found in the serum were anti-C33c and anti-C22-3. The results of the RIBA were substantially confirmed by ELISA, with a positive test in the urine of 30 of 32 seropositive patients. Similar results were obtained in patients with EMC II. We conclude that the specificity of the RIBA and ELISA tests for HCV antibodies in patients with EMC appears to be as high as in HCV+ patients without serum cryoglobulins. EMC patients have a high incidence of HCV infection and active chronic liver disease.

The antimicrobial susceptibilities of 572 strains of Escherichia coli were evaluated. The strains were divided according to the biotypes and the differences between the strains towards various antibiotics were examined. We found a correlation between biotype and antibiotype. This correlation lead us to think of a possible existence of more resistant biotypes than others. Now we are doing other studies in order to show if this correlation is constant during time and if similar differences are present for other microorganisms, as well.
