Abstract

We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. Abstract

Abstract

We compute the O(αsα2) and O(αs2α) contributions to the production cross section of a Z boson with one b jet at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and study their phenomenological relevance for LHC physics. The accurate prediction of hadronic Z+b-jet production is needed to control a background that greatly affects both the measurement of Higgs-boson properties and the searches of new physics at the LHC. At the same time it could enable the first precise measurement of the b-quark parton distribution function. In this context b-quark mass effects become relevant and need to be studied with care, both at the level of the hard process and at the level of the initial- and final-state parton evolution. It is the aim of this paper to explore some of these issues in the framework of a massive five-flavor scheme and to assess the need for the inclusion of both electroweak corrections, in addition to QCD corrections, and b-quark mass effects in the prediction of total and differential cross sections for hadronic Z+b-jet production.

Abstract

In early 2012 the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11 (MPEG) finalized the new MPEG-D Unified Speech and Audio Coding standard. The new codec brings together the previously separated worlds of general audio coding and speech coding. It does so by integrating elements from audio coding and speech coding into a unified system. The present publication outlines all aspects of this standardization effort, starting with the history and motivation of the MPEG work item, describing all technical features of the final system, and further discussing listening test results and performance numbers which show the advantages of the new system over current state-of-the-art codecs. Abstract

The ISO/IEC MPEG-2 advanced audio coding (AAC) system was designed to provide MPEG-2 with the best audio quality without any restrictions due to compatibility requirements. The main features of the AAC system (ISO/IEC 13818-7) are described. MPEG-2 AAC combines the coding efficiency of a high-resolution filter bank, prediction techniques, and Huffmann coding with additional functionalities aimed to deliver very high audio quality at a variety of data rates.

Abstract

Cohorts of juvenile (5-20mm) Callinectes sapidus were collected from the same site in North Carolina in fall and spring of 2000 and 2001. Crabs were held in captivity for 120-day experiments to determine the effects of different salinity (5,15,24,30 0/00) and temperature (20,23,24,25,27,30 degrees centigrade) on their growth and molting. All crabs had remarkably consistent growth rates despite the wide environmental differences. The duration of their molt cycles was also very consistent, between 15-28 days on average. In some groups, the number of molts completed during the 120-day study varied with salinity and temperature. A cohort of crabs collected in fall 2001 had exceptional mean molt increments; they increased in size at each molt more than any other replicates. Eyestalk ablation induced crabs to grow larger at each molt, but they did not molt faster than controls. Juvenile Callinectes sapidus adapt well to wide variations in salinity and temperature, with little decrement on their growth or molting. Some cohorts of the crabs grew faster than others; this may be due to their initial condition when they recruited to the estuary. Supported by NSF: DBI 99-78613

Abstract

The article discusses a research study on Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep with paranasal sinus masses. Examined were 21 sheep and paranasal sinus masses stained for light microscopy examination then immunohistochemistry (IHC) performed and then a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Results in gross pathology showed diffuse and moderate sinus lining thickening to solid masses while histopathology had epithelial and mesenchymal proliferation components in the mucosa and submucosa and none of the samples were positive after PCR in molecular diagnostics.

48. Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy in patients with malignant glioma-From neuroimmunology to clinical trial design considerations.

Abstract

Clinical trials evaluating chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy in patients with malignant gliomas have shown some early promise in pediatric and adult patients. However, the long-term benefits and safety for patients remain to be established. The ultimate success of CAR T-cell therapy for malignant glioma will require the integration of an in-depth understanding of the immunology of the central nervous system (CNS) parenchyma with strategies to overcome the paucity and heterogeneous expression of glioma-specific antigens. We also need to address the cold (immunosuppressive) microenvironment, exhaustion of the CAR T-cells, as well as local and systemic immunosuppression. Here, we discuss the basics and scientific considerations for CAR T-cell therapies and highlight recent clinical trials. To help identify optimal CAR T-cell administration routes, we summarize our current understanding of CNS immunology and T-cell homing to the CNS. We also discuss challenges and opportunities related to clinical trial design and patient safety/monitoring. Finally, we provide our perspective on future prospects in CAR T-cell therapy for malignant gliomas by discussing combinations and novel engineering strategies to overcome immuno-regulatory mechanisms. Abstract

New World arenaviruses cause fatal hemorrhagic disease in South America. Pirital virus (PIRV), a mammarenavirus hosted by Alston&rsquo;s cotton rat ( Sigmodon alstoni ), causes a disease in Syrian golden hamsters ( Mesocricetus auratus ) (biosafety level-3, BSL-3) that has many pathologic similarities to the South American hemorrhagic fevers (BSL-4) and, thus, is considered among the best small-animal models for human arenavirus disease. Here, we extend in greater detail previously described clinical and pathological findings in Syrian hamsters and provide evidence for a pro-inflammatory macrophage response during PIRV infection. The liver was the principal target organ of the disease, and signs of Kupffer cell involvement were identified in mortally infected hamster histopathology data. Differential expression analysis of liver mRNA revealed signatures of the pro-inflammatory response, hematologic dysregulation, interferon pathway and other host response pathways, including 17 key transcripts that were also reported in two non-human primate (NHP) arenavirus liver-infection models, representing both Old and New World mammarenavirus infections. Although antigen presentation may differ among rodent and NHP species, key hemostatic and innate immune-response components showed expression parallels. Signatures of pro-inflammatory macrophage involvement in PIRV-infected livers included enrichment of Ifng , Nfkb2 , Stat1 , Irf1 , Klf6 , Il1b , Cxcl10 , and Cxcl11 transcripts. Together, these data indicate that pro-inflammatory macrophage M1 responses likely contribute to the pathogenesis of acute PIRV infection.

50. Serological evidence of arenavirus circulation among fruit bats in Trinidad.

Abstract

Tacaribe virus (TCRV) was isolated in the 1950s from artibeus bats captured on the island of Trinidad. The initial characterization of TCRV suggested that artibeus bats were natural reservoir hosts. However, nearly 60 years later experimental infections of Jamaican fruit bats (Artibeus jamaicensis) resulted in fatal disease or clearance, suggesting artibeus bats may not be a reservoir host. To further evaluate the TCRV reservoir host status of artibeus bats, we captured bats of six species in Trinidad for evidence of infection. Bats of all four fruigivorous species captured had antibodies to TCRV nucleocapsid, whereas none of the insectivore or nectarivore species did. Many flat-faced fruit-eating bats (A. planirostris) and great fruit-eating bats (A. literatus) were seropositive by ELISA and western blot to TCRV nucleocapsid antigen, as were two of four Seba's fruit bats (Carollia perspicillata) and two of three yellow-shouldered fruit bats (Sturnira lilium). Serum neutralization tests failed to detect neutralizing antibodies to TCRV from these bats. TCRV RNA was not detected in lung tissues or lung homogenates inoculated onto Vero cells. These data indicate that TCRV or a similar arenavirus continues to circulate among fruit bats of Trinidad but there was no evidence of persistent infection, suggesting artibeus bats are not reservoir hosts.
