14. Design and Simulation Analysis of Cryogenic System of HTS Synchronous Condenser Rotor

Abstract

The superconducting coil with high current carrying capacity and DC resistance-free characteristics is used to replace the copper coil on the traditional motor rotor, which can greatly improve the air gap flux density and power density of the motor. This paper introduces the cryogenic system of a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) Synchronous Condenser rotor. The HTS magnet in the rotor is cooled centrally by embedding Gas-Helium pipes in each coil, and cold rings are set at both ends of the magnet for temperature partitioning to reduce the temperature influence of other components on the magnet. According to the theoretical formula of heat transfer, the total thermal power of the cryogenic system in the rotor was calculated, and the Gas-Helium input parameters required by the rotor are deduced. Subsequently, the temperature distribution of the HTS coils inside the rotor was simulated by the fluid thermodynamic method. The simulation results show that the HTS coils and cold rings are separately cooled to 27.05 K and 36.35 K by the externally introduced 25 K Gas-Helium, and the temperature difference of the coils is only 0.2 K, which shows the reliability of the cryogenic system in the HTS synchronous condenser rotor.

15. Thermal Analysis of the 4 K Cryostat Within a 1.5 T Conduction-Cooled Superconducting Magnet for Whole-Body MRI Application

Abstract

This paper presented the thermal analysis of the 4 K cryostat of a self-developed 1.5 T conduction-cooled superconducting magnet in order to assess the cooling without liquid helium. Through a two-stage GM cryocooler and some solid thermal links, the NbTi coils achieved 4 K for superconducting state. Whole-body MRI requirements can be satisfied by the superconducting magnet's electromagnetic design, which has a large bore and a homogenous magnetic field. It will take about 278 hours to reach the lowest temperature of 3.73 K through precooling the 4 K cryostat with liquid nitrogen (77 K). Additionally, the FED method was used to evaluate the 4 K cryostat's temperature distribution, and it was determined that the temperature range of 3.99–4.12 K was enough for the magnet to operate safely. The analysis showed that the 1.5 T liquid-helium-free superconducting magnet was feasible and economical, which will be crucial in preserving helium supplies and lowering healthcare expenses.

Abstract

Background: Magnetic field shimming of the magnet is a routine practice in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. For clinically‐used 1.5 T or 3 T MRI superconducting magnets, it is generally straightforward to achieve desired magnetic field uniformity with the passive shim technique. In comparison, superconducting shims with higher shimming efficiency are usually introduced in combination with passive shimming to satisfy the higher magnetic field uniformity requirement for ultrahigh field magnets (≥7 Tesla). However, superconducting shim usually involves a complex winding structure and low‐temperature environment, bringing considerable engineering challenges and extra costs in practice. Purpose: In this study, we aimed to improve the passive shimming method that can incorporate the unique electromagnetic properties of ultrahigh‐field MRI magnets and is thus more effective for field corrections at 7T and above. Methods: In this work, we propose a dedicated passive shimming strategy for a 7 T whole‐body MRI superconducting magnet. In this method, the iron usage and magnetic force due to the iron‐field interaction are strictly managed to ensure a shim tray insert is operable by manpower (without specially designed tools). Results: To validate the proposed shimming strategy, a shimming experiment was implemented on a 7 T/800 mm superconducting magnet. Alternating with the odd and even shim trays in our two‐round operation, the magnetic field inhomogeneity was successfully corrected from 85.36 to 7.91 ppm, achieving the magnetic field quality elevation of more than one order of magnitude. Conclusion: The experimental results indicated that the proposed electromagnetic technology is expected to be effective for developing ultrahigh‐field MRI instruments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to a flexible robotic arm, boundary control scheme is designed, which can achieve vibration suppression and angle tracking for the robotic arm with a rotating hub and a length-varying arm. For dynamic analysis, an infinite dimensional model of the arm is designed. Unknown disturbances can be estimated by two observers. Two boundary controls with observers are designed for vibration suppression and tracking the desired angle. For the arm system, the boundedness is testified by introducing Lyapunov's theory. Finally, simulations attest the validity of the designed controls.

Abstract

In this paper, in order to suppress the vibration and track the desired angle of a flexible manipulator effected by output constraints and external disturbances, the novel restricted boundary control laws with disturbance observers are proposed. The barrier Lyapunov function is adopted to limit the tracking errors of the angle and the end-point displacement. Disturbance observers are designed to reject external disturbances. For the closed-loop system, the stability is proven. Numerical simulations show the feasibility of the proposed control schemes.

Abstract

Mass production has been a trend for modern manufacturing. Information from peer processes may be used to improve the individual process control performance. The idea of ‘incremental step mimicking’ has been presented in our previous work [1] which resulted in ‘incremental inter-agent learning’ (IIAL) adaptive control. However, that work is based on a primitive adaptive control in which the control input is directly calculated from the online-identified model. This paper explores the inter-agent learning adaptive control based on a more complicated adaptive control, and proposes a more general Full-Scale IIAL (FS-IIAL) of which the previous IIAL [1] can be viewed as a special case. With the ensured robust stability, the proposed work is applied on the case when LIP formulae is a single layer RBF neural network, and simulation result validates the superior control performance of each process over the original adaptive control and the previous IIAL. © 2020
