8. Integrating Hydrogen in Single-Price Electricity Systems: The Effects of Spatial Economic Signals

Abstract

Hydrogen can contribute substantially to the reduction of carbon emissions in industry and transportation. However, the production of hydrogen through electrolysis creates interdependencies between hydrogen supply chains and electricity systems. Therefore, as governments worldwide are planning considerable financial subsidies and new regulation to promote hydrogen infrastructure investments in the next years, energy policy research is needed to guide such policies with holistic analyses. In this study, we link a electrolytic hydrogen supply chain model with an electricity system dispatch model, for a cross-sectoral case study of Germany in 2030. We find that hydrogen infrastructure investments and their effects on the electricity system are strongly influenced by electricity prices. Given current uniform prices, hydrogen production increases congestion costs in the electricity grid by 17%. In contrast, passing spatially resolved electricity price signals leads to electrolyzers being placed at low-cost grid nodes and further away from consumption centers. This causes lower end-use costs for hydrogen. Moreover, congestion management costs decrease substantially, by up to 20% compared to the benchmark case without hydrogen. These savings could be transferred into according subsidies for hydrogen production. Thus, our study demonstrates the benefits of differentiating economic signals for hydrogen production based on spatial criteria.

Abstract

Cycloaddition of CO2and epoxides to synthesize cyclic carbonates viaphotothermal catalysis represents one of the effective strategies for achieving carbon neutrality. In this study, a facile one-step hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize a bimetallic photothermal catalyst FeCo@BPDC. This catalyst demonstrates remarkable efficiency in fixing CO2to synthesize cyclic carbonates under atmospheric pressure and solvent-free conditions. Through comprehensive characterization and experimentation, the indispensability of bimetallic active sites has been convincingly demonstrated. Additionally, the incorporation of organic ligands significantly enhances the concentration of oxygen vacancies within the catalyst, thereby endowing it with excellent photocatalytic performance. This study presents a novel perspective for the design of photothermal catalysts that convert CO2into value-added chemicals under mild conditions.

Abstract

As one of the Early Four Historiographies, Fan Ye’s Book of the Later Han preserves significant works of both historical and literary value. This is something increasingly significant in response to the dynamic growth in popularity of classical Chinese texts among Western sinologists. Through reading the English translation of the “Biography of Huan Tan and Feng Yan” from the Book of the Later Han, the followingthree issues are arguably noteworthy for the translator’s consideration. Firstly, the English translation may involve aninterim step of intralingual translation from classical Chinese to modern Chinese, before a subsequent interlingual translation from modern Chinese to English. While this facilitates the process of translation,the vernacular translation also involves further risks in misinterpretation. Secondly, translation of such historiographical work which consists of literary works by various writers with numerous historical references,not only requires the translator to conduct additional analysis and write explanatory notes, it also makes the English output inaccessible to most readers. Thirdly,the highly interdisciplinary knowledge in relevant historiography not only demands a high quality of competency in translators, but also arguably acts as a catalyst for further academic research in the process of close reading and research. This paper intends to analyse the above three issues through a case study on the “Biography of Huan Tan and Feng Yan”, thereby demonstrating how the translation of Chinese classics is anarduous yet meaningful challenge.
