Abstract Background Fall prevention and balance control constitute critical components of rehabilitation for stroke survivors. Kneeling training, characterized by its low center of gravity focus, has been incorporated into rehabilitation regimens to enhance postural control across various pathological conditions. Despite its widespread use, empirical evidence substantiating the efficacy of kneeling training is limited, particularly in the context of mobility and balance improvement for patients who have had a stroke. This study aims to substantiate the safety and effectiveness of kneeling training in individuals recovering from stroke. Methods A randomized controlled trial comparing kneeling training and conventional rehabilitation training was conducted, involving sixty-seven participants allocated to the Kneeling Training Group (KNT) and the Conventional Rehabilitation Group (CVR). The KNT group underwent 30-minute sessions of kneeling training, while the CVR group received conventional treadmill walking training, both administered six times per week over four weeks. Evaluation encompassed the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Lower Extremity (FMA-LE), the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and gait analysis was conducted at baseline, as well as at the 2 and 4-week intervals. Results Our study established the safety of a 4-week kneeling training program. Notably, the KNT group exhibited more pronounced improvements in BBS scores at weeks 2 and 4 compared to the CVR group. However, no significant disparities emerged in FMA-LE and gait analysis between the two groups. Our findings suggest that kneeling training may serve as a viable option for enhancing lower limb balance in survivors who have had a stroke. Conclusions We conclude that kneeling training, characterized by its safety, simplicity, and no restrictions on location or equipment, represents a valuable therapeutic approach for enhancing walking balance in individuals recovering from stroke. Abstract As spaceflight becomes more common with commercial crews, blood-based measures of crew health can guide both astronaut biomedicine and countermeasures. By profiling plasma proteins, metabolites, and extracellular vesicles/particles (EVPs) from the SpaceX Inspiration4 crew, we generated “spaceflight secretome profiles,” which showed significant differences in coagulation, oxidative stress, and brain-enriched proteins. While >93% of differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) in vesicles and metabolites recovered within six months, the majority (73%) of plasma DAPs were still perturbed post-flight. Moreover, these proteomic alterations correlated better with peripheral blood mononuclear cells than whole blood, suggesting that immune cells contribute more DAPs than erythrocytes. Finally, to discern possible mechanisms leading to brain-enriched protein detection and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, we examined protein changes in dissected brains of spaceflight mice, which showed increases in PECAM-1, a marker of BBB integrity. These data highlight how even short-duration spaceflight can disrupt human and murine physiology and identify spaceflight biomarkers that can guide countermeasure development.

Abstract Background Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a lethal malignancy with a five-year survival rate of approximately 10%. Genetic mutations are pivotal drivers in PDAC pathogenesis, but recent investigations also revealed the involvement of non-genetic alterations in the disease development. In this study, we undertook a multi-omics approach, encompassing ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and Hi-C methodologies, to dissect gene expression alterations arising from changes in chromosome accessibility and chromatin three-dimensional interactions in PDAC. Results Our findings indicate that chromosomal structural alterations can lead to abnormal expressions on key genes during PDAC development. Notably, overexpression of oncogenes FGFR2, FOXA2, CYP2R1, and CPOX can be attributed to the augmentation of promoter accessibility, coupled with long-range interactions with distal elements. Additionally, our findings indicate that chromosomal structural alterations caused by genomic instability can lead to abnormal expressions in PDACs. As an example, by analyzing chromosomal changes, we identified a putative oncogenic gene, LPAR1, which shows upregulated expression in both PDAC cell lines and clinical samples. The overexpression is correlated with alterations in LPAR1-associated 3D genome structure and chromatin state. We further demonstrated that high LPAR1 activity is required for enhanced PDAC cell migration in vitro. Conclusions Collectively, our findings reveal that the chromosomal conformational alterations, in addition to the well-known genetic mutations, are critical for PDAC tumorigenesis.

In recent years, with the continuous promotion of the " Ocean Power" strategy, Underwater Wireless Optical Communication (UWOC) has played an important role in marine military, underwater environment monitoring, submarine oil exploration and marine science research due to its advantages in large bandwidth, fast rate, low power consumption and high security. UWOC has become a new feasible underwater communication technology. The positioning technology is now regarded as the basis of UWOC applications and one of the key techniques in underwater target detection & moving object tracking, which has been favored by researchers. In this paper, the development of UWOC and related research results are introduced in detail, with diverse UWOC localization methods being analyzed. Besides, the research status, the challenges and the development prospects for UWOC localization technology are also discussed.

The risk factor of the receiving water body is one of the important factors that affect the self-purification ability of the water body. Analyzing the concentration and removal rate of the target substances such as suspended solid (SS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) in the receiving water body during the life cycle can trace the risk factor. Based on this, this article takes a sewage treatment plant and its receiving water body in Nanjing as the research object, sets up five sampling points, and calculates the target concentration and removal rate using the cellular automata-Markov chain Monte Carlo method. Thus, risk assessment of water bodies can be achieved. The results show that: (1) the concentration of the target substance in each process stage has obviously decreased during the life cycle, with an average concentration of 3–18 mg/L; (2) in the life cycle, the highest removal rate of target concentration in each process section can reach 85%; (3) the concentration of target substances SS, COD, TN, TN, TP, and TP at the outlet of the sewage treatment plant is relatively high. Practice has proven that this research method can assess the risk factors of receiving water bodies, so as to improve the scientific, refined and standardized environmental management.

Aiming at the problem of the application of the integrated photonic filter in the 3～5 μm atmospheric window banda mid-infrared add-drop filter based on the apodized grating-assisted contra-directional coupler (contra-DC) is studied and designed. The complementary lateral-misalignment method is used for phase modulation to achieve spectral sidelobe suppression and eliminate spectral distortion and broadening caused by the conventional lateral-misalignment modulation method. Simulation results show that the device can achieve a high Sidelobe Suppression Ratio (SLSR) of 22 dB, bandpass filter spectrum is flat at the top and the filtering spectrum is close to the box shape. The device has low insertion loss of about 0.4 dB through port and 0.45 dB drop port.

Spatial community detection is a method that divides geographic spaces into several sub-regions based on spatial interactions, reflecting the regional spatial structure against the background of human mobility. In recent years, spatial community detection has attracted extensive research in the field of geographic information science. However, mining the community structures and their evolutionary patterns from spatial interaction data remains challenging. Most existing methods for spatial community detection rely on representing spatial interaction networks in Euclidean space, which results in significant distortion when modeling spatial interaction networks; since spatial community detection has no ground truth, this results in the detection and evaluation of communities being difficult. Furthermore, most methods usually ignore the dynamics of these spatial interaction networks, resulting in the dynamic evolution of spatial communities not being discussed in depth. Therefore, this study proposes a framework for community detection and evolutionary analysis for spatial interaction networks. Specifically, we construct a spatial interaction network based on network science theory, where geographic units serve as nodes and interaction relationships serve as edges. In order to fully learn the structural features of the spatial interaction network, we introduce a hyperbolic graph convolution module in the community detection phase to learn the spatial and non-spatial attributes of the spatial interaction network, obtain vector representations of the nodes, and optimize them based on a graph generation model to achieve the final community detection results. Considering the dynamics of spatial interactions, we analyze the evolution of the spatial community over time. Finally, using taxi trajectory data as an example, we conduct relevant experiments within the fifth ring road of Beijing. The empirical results validate the community detection capabilities of the proposed method, which can effectively describe the dynamic spatial structure of cities based on human mobility and provide an effective analytical method for urban spatial planning.

Abstract Objective Treatment options for acquired tracheal stenosis (ATS) are limited due to a series of pathophysiological changes including inflammation and cell proliferation. Micro ribonucleic acid‐21‐5p (miR‐21‐5p) may promote the excessive proliferation of fibroblasts. However, various types of fibrosis can be prevented with pirfenidone (PFD). Currently, the effect of PFD on miR‐21‐5p and its biological function has not been clarified. In this study, PFD was evaluated as a potential treatment for ATS by inducing fibroblast proliferation in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced fibroblasts by targeting miR‐21‐5p. Methods For 48 h, 1 g/ml LPS was used to generate fibroblasts in vitro, followed by the separation of cells into four groups: control, PFD, mimic, and mimic + PFD. The Cell Counting Kit‐8 (CCK‐8) technique was adopted to measure the proliferation of fibroblasts. Real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT‐qPCR) and Western blot (WB) were used to measure the relative expressions of tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), transforming growth factor‐β1 (TGF‐β1), drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic 7 (Smad7) and collagen type I alpha 1(COL1A1) messenger RNA (mRNA) and proteins, respectively. Results (1) At 0, 24, 48, and 72 h, fibroblast growth was assessed using the CCK‐8 method. Compared with the control group, the mimic group showed the highest fibroblast viability, and the PFD group showed the lowest fibroblast viability. However, fibroblast viability increased in the mimic + PFD group but decreased in the mimic one. (2) RT‐qPCR and WB showed that the mimic group exhibited a significant up‐regulation in the relative expressions of TNF‐α, TGF‐β1, and COL1A1 mRNA and proteins but a down‐regulation in the relative expression of Smad7 mRNA and protein compared with the control one. In the PFD group, the results were the opposite. Nevertheless, the relative expressions of TNF‐α, TGF‐β1, and COL1A1 mRNA and proteins were increased, whereas that of Smad7 mRNA was decreased in the mimic + PFD group. The change was less in the mimic group. Conclusion PFD may have a preventive and curative effect on ATS by inhibiting fibroblast proliferation and the fibrotic process and possibly through down‐regulating miR‐21‐5p and up‐regulating Smad7 and its mediated fibrotic and inflammatory responses.

Integrated mid-infrared (MIR) photonics have various applications in optical fiber communication, spectral detection and identification, free-space communication, and light detection and ranging, etc. The MIR electro-optic (EO) modulator, which is one of the key components of MIR integrated photonic systems, has attracted a lot of research interests. In this paper, we review the reported integrated MIR EO modulators based on different modulation mechanisms and material platforms. The recent research progresses and challenges of MIR EO modulators are presented and discussed. The unique advantages and the corresponding applications of each type of MIR modulators are summarized as well. In the end, we provide our perspectives of a few areas in integrated MIR modulators that are worthy for research attention in future.

Conventional fertilization practices can lead to many ecological problems, such as nutrient imbalance, soil acidity, and reduced soil fertility, in natural rubber plantations. To address these challenges, a field investigation was strategically carried out to substitute inorganic fertilizer with organic fertilizer, consisting of six treatments: no fertilization (CK), inorganic fertilizer (NPK), 25% replacement of inorganic through organic (25% manure (M)), 50% replacement of inorganic through organic (50% manure (M)), 75% replacement of inorganic through organic (75% manure (M)), and 100% organic fertilizer (100% manure). The soil physicochemical properties (soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), mineral nitrogen (N), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N)), C:N, pH, and the carbon- and nitrogen-converting enzymes β-1,4-glucosidase (BG), N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) and L-leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) were all determined. The partial substitution of inorganic fertilizer with organic fertilizer (i.e., 75% M at surface soil layer) showed higher SOC (14.52 g·kg−1), TN (1.06 g·kg−1), N (20.07 mg·kg−1), C:N (14.63), NH4+-N (10.63 mg·kg−1), and NO3−-N (11.06 mg·kg−1) than NPK and CK. This increase in physicochemical properties after partial replacement of inorganic with organic fertilizer resulted from higher carbon and nitrogen enzyme activities (BG (143.17·nmol·g−1·h−1), NAG (153.96 nmol·g−1·h−1), and LAP (153.48 nmol·g−1·h−1)) compared to NPK and CK. Further, the Pearson correlation and redundancy analysis (RDA) analyses confirmed a significant positive correlation between SOC, N, and soil enzymes. This study presents a new strategy for assessing the impact of partially replacing inorganic fertilizer with organic fertilizer in rubber plantations in tropical regions, mainly by modifying the soil nutrient composition.

In order to optimize the structural performance of the heavy truck drive axle and realize the market supply goal of the whole axle lightweight, the corresponding research is carried out based on CAE/CAM technology. Using the systematic layout thinking, the mathematical model is scientifically built, a complete lightweight design axle is formed through CAE simulation analysis and CAM collaborative production, and the prototype test is conducted. The results show that the weight of the whole axle after the lightweight design is relatively reduced by 12.7% and the transmission efficiency is more than 95% on the premise of meeting the key performance parameters such as noise limit and B10 life. This design method and thinking can provide reference ideas for the improvement of other parts of heavy trucks, especially in the field of the lightweight research, and it would have great application and promotion prospects.

COVID-19 has spread rapidly worldwide in the past three years, triggering partial and full lockdowns globally. The successful control of the COVID-19 pandemic on a global scale depended heavily upon the accurate detection of COVID-19. However, the main diagnostic tests for COVID-19 have some significant limitations, e.g. the major nucleic acid (RT-PCR) tests while having a high sensitivity are time-consuming and require expensive equipment with the shortage of test kits in many countries. Antigen lateral flow tests have a lower sensitivity and they cannot be used during the early pandemic as well as usually more expensive than the full or complete blood count test used in this paper which can be potentially performed using a finger blood sample. The last decade has seen rapid growth of AI, particularly deep learning, which has found wide applications in medical image analysis, with results comparable to and even surpassing human expert performance. There have been several machine learning models reported for COVID-19 diagnostics or prognosis predictions, most of them based on CT and X-ray images. In this paper we have applied traditional machine learning and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based deep learning to the blood test data obtained from hematology analyzers and demonstrated that the AI models can be used to detect COVID-19 with a high degree of accuracy (>97%). The performance of different classifiers will be compared and discussed. The work should have potential applications in current COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) contribute a majority of rainfall over tropical oceans. However, our understanding of the environmental controls on tropical oceanic MCS precipitation remains incomplete. Using 20‐year of satellite observations, reanalysis data, and MCS tracking, we found that MCSs initiating in a mesoscale environment with enhanced lower‐free‐tropospheric moisture, warmer middle troposphere, stronger low‐level ascent, and stronger deep‐layer (surface‐400 hPa) wind shear tend to produce more precipitation during their lifetimes. While most of these environmental factors are correlated with one another, the deep‐layer shear is not. A rapid pickup in MCS lifetime rainfall is found when the lower‐free‐tropospheric specific humidity exceeds 10 g kg−1. This nonlinearity is mostly dominated by the nonlinear increase in MCS area. On the other hand, both MCS area and rain rate increase quasi‐linearly with the deep‐layer shear. The increase in rain rate is related to the enhancement of heavy precipitating convective activity with deep‐layer shear.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease with progressive paralysis of limbs and bulb in patients, the cause of which remains unclear. Accumulating studies suggest that motor neuron degeneration is associated with systemic metabolic impairment in ALS. However, the metabolic reprogramming and underlying mechanism in the longitudinal progression of the disease remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the molecular changes at both metabolic and proteomic levels during disease progression to identify the most critical metabolic pathways and underlying mechanisms involved in ALS pathophysiological changes. Utilizing liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, we analyzed the metabolites' levels of plasma, lumbar spinal cord, and motor cortex from SOD1G93A mice and wildtype (WT) littermates at different stages. To elucidate the regulatory network underlying metabolic changes, we further analyzed the proteomics profile in the spinal cords of SOD1G93A and WT mice. A group of metabolites implicated in purine metabolism, methionine cycle, and glycolysis were found differentially expressed in ALS mice, and abnormal expressions of enzymes involved in these metabolic pathways were also confirmed. Notably, we first demonstrated that dysregulation of purine metabolism might contribute to the pathogenesis and disease progression of ALS. Furthermore, we discovered that fatty acid metabolism, TCA cycle, arginine and proline metabolism, and folate-mediated one‑carbon metabolism were also significantly altered in this disease. The identified differential metabolites and proteins in our study could complement existing data on metabolic reprogramming in ALS, which might provide new insight into the pathological mechanisms and novel therapeutic targets of ALS.

BackgroundStroke is a common cerebrovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between LIPC single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the risk of stroke in the Chinese population.MethodsThis study recruited 710 stroke patients and 701 healthy controls. The four SNPs (rs690, rs6083, rs3829461, and rs6074) in LIPC were genotyped by the Agena MassARRAY. The correlation between LIPC polymorphisms and stroke risk was measured by odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). In addition, multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) analysis was used to evaluate the impact of SNP–SNP interaction on stroke risk.ResultsOverall analysis showed that rs690 was associated with an increased risk of stroke (T vs. G: OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.01–1.40, p = 0.041; additive: OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.01–1.42, p = 0.036). The stratified analysis revealed that rs690 was associated with an increased risk of stroke in subjects aged ≤ 64 years, male patients, and smokers, and rs6074 was associated with an increased risk of stroke in subjects aged > 64 years, male patients, drinkers, and non-smokers (p < 0.05). The results of the MDR analysis suggested the four-locus model as the most favorable model for assessing the risk of stroke. The analysis of clinical parameters of stroke patients showed that rs690 was correlated with platelet distribution width (PDW) (p = 0.014) and hematocrit levels (p = 0.004), and rs6074 was correlated with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level (p = 0.033). Furthermore, bioinformatics analysis results demonstrated that the expression levels of LIPC and its related genes (APOB, CETP, PNPLA2, and LMF1) were significantly different between the control and stroke groups (p < 0.05), and LIPC-related proteins were mainly related to lipid metabolism.ConclusionThis study indicated that rs690 and rs6074 in LIPC were significantly associated with increased risk of stroke in the Chinese population, possibly by regulating the levels of PDW, HCT, and LDL-C.

Urban waterlogging is a natural disaster that occurs in developed cities globally and has inevitably become severe due to urbanization, densification, and climate change. The digital elevation model (DEM) is an important component of urban waterlogging risk prediction. However, previous studies generally focused on optimizing hydrological models, and there is a potential improvement in DEM by fusing remote sensing data and hydrological data. To improve the DEM accuracy of urban roads and densely built-up areas, a multisource data fusion approach (MDF-UNet) was proposed. Firstly, Fuzhou city was taken as an example, and the satellite remote sensing images, drainage network, land use, and DEM data of the study area were collected. Secondly, the U-Net model was used to identify buildings using remote sensing images. Subsequently, a multisource data fusion (MDF) method was adopted to reconstruct DEM by fusing the buildings identification results, land use, and drainage network data. Then, a coupled one-dimensional (1D) conduit drainage and two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic model was constructed and validated. Finally, the simulation results of the MDF-UNet approach were compared with the raw DEM data, inverse distance weighting (IDW), and MDF. The results indicated that the proposed approach greatly improved the simulation accuracy of waterlogging points by 29%, 53%, and 12% compared with the raw DEM, IDW, and MDF. Moreover, the MDF-UNet method had the smallest median value error of 0.08 m in the inundation depth simulation. The proposed method demonstrates that the credibility of the waterlogging model and simulation accuracy in roads and densely built-up areas is significantly improved, providing a reliable basis for urban waterlogging prevention and management.

IntroductionThe grasslands in the Nature Reserve of Ganshenling, in the south of Hainan Island, were first formed after deforestation disturbance before a natural restoration of shrubs and secondary forests. However, the stages of grassland and shrubs in some parts of Ganshenling regions could not be naturally restored to secondary forests. In addition, the forest form of the secondary forest after 40 years (40a) of succession was similar to that of the secondary forest of 60 years (60a). However, it was not known whether the microorganisms recovered to the level of the secondary forest of 60a. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are plant root symbionts that can improve the nitrogen and phosphorus absorption of plants and play a key role in secondary forest succession. An understanding of the essential role of soil AMF in secondary forest succession of tropical rainforest in Ganshenling regions is still limited.MethodsTherefore, the soil of 0–10 cm was collected with the help of a 5-point sampling method in grassland, shrubs, and second tropical lowland rainforest of 40a and 60a. We studied community changes in AMF with the succession and explored the impacts of soil physicochemical properties on soil AMF.ResultsOur findings were as follows: (1) Different successional stages showed divergent effects on soil AMF communities. (2) After 40a recovery, the alpha-diversity indices of AMF recovered to the level of secondary forest of 60a, but the similarity of soil AMF communities only recovered to 25.3%. (3) Species richness of common species, rare species, and all the species of AMF showed a significantly positive correlation with soil nitrogen. (4) OTU10; OTU6, OTU9, and OTU141; OTU3 and OTU38; and OTU2, OTU15, OTU23, and OTU197 were significantly unique AMF for grasslands, shrubs, and secondary forests of 40a and 60a, respectively. (5) The phylogenetic tree and the heatmap of AMF showed that the OTUs in grasslands and shrubs were in contrast to the OTUs in secondary forests of 40a and 60a.DiscussionWe concluded that the succession of a secondary forest after deforestation disturbance was probably limited by its AMF community.

IntroductionSoil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation changed with forest succession and hence impacted the SOC storage. However, the variation and underlying mechanisms about SOC during tropical forest succession are not fully understood.MethodsSoil samples at four depths (0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, 20–40 cm and 40–60 cm), litter, and roots of 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm were collected from three forest succession stages (plantation forest, secondary forest, and old– growth forest) in the Jianfengling (JFL) National Nature Reserve in Hainan Island, China. The SOC, soil enzyme activities, physiochemical properties, the biomass of litter and roots were analyzed.ResultsResults showed that forest succession significantly increased SOC at 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm depth (from 23.00 g/kg to 33.70 g/kg and from 14.46 g/kg to 22.55 g/kg, respectively) but not at a deeper depth (20–60 cm). SOC content of the three forest succession stages decreased with increasing soil depth and bulk density (BD). With forest succession from plantation to secondary and old–growth forest, the soil pH at 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm depth decreased from 5.08 to 4.10 and from 5.52 to 4.64, respectively. Structural equation model (SEM) results showed that the SOC at depths of 0–20 cm increased with total root biomass but decreased with increasing soil pH value. The direct positive effect of soil TP on SOC was greater than the indirect negative effect of decomposition of SOC by soil acid phosphatase (AP).DiscussionTo sum up, the study highlighted there was soil P– limited in tropical forests of JFL, and the increase in TP and total root biomass inputs were main factors favoring SOC sequestration during the tropical forest succession. In addition, soil acidification is of great importance for SOC accumulation in tropical forests for forest succession in the future. Therefore, forest succession improved SOC accumulation, TP and roots contributed to soil C sequestration.

IntroductionAlthough numerous studies have investigated ecosystem-scale soil respiration (SR) at different ecosystem, our understanding of spatial heterogeneity of SR at plot scale is still incomplete, especially in tropical rainforests with complex topography. Further, the ecological factors that drive the variability of SR in tropical rainforests is also poorly understood.MethodsHere, we investigated the spatial variations and control mechanisms of SR in a 60-ha plot of old-growth tropical rainforest with complex topography. Specifically, we sampled a 60-ha plot in intervals of 20 m to measure SR with LI-8100, used semi-variogram of geostatistical tools to examine spatial heterogeneity of SR.ResultsThe mean SR rate in this plot was 4.312 ± 0.0410 (SE) μmol m−2 s−1. Geostatistical analysis indicated that the SR rate at this plot had a moderate spatial dependence, with a nugget-to-sill ratio of 68.1%. The coefficients variance of SR was 36.2% and the patch size was approximately 112 m. Stepwise linear regression analysis (involving a multiple regression tree) revealed that the independent factors regulated different types of SR’s. Liner mix-effect models showed that SR was significantly positively related to soil phosphorus and negatively to the slope in the 60-ha plot. Spatial disturbance of SR along multidimensional habitats that an increase in elevation of the multidimensional habitat, which was accompanied by enhanced SOC and soil phosphorous, also increased its SR in the 60-ha plot.DiscussionThis study would be helpful in designing future field experiments for a better understanding of SR at plot scale.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi play an important role in mediating plant-soil interactions across succession stages. However, AMF community dynamics which about the change of community composition and member activity remain unclear. To complete the gap knowledge about microbial community dynamics during restoration succession, soil AMF community composition was studied within a tropical forest ecosystem in the Ganshiling nature reserve using high throughput sequencing methods. The results revealed that soil AMF communities characteristics about speices diversity, species composition and microbial correlation network showed significant differences between shrubland (SC) and secondary forest ecosystems, but the same differences were not found between 40-year recovery secondary forest (SF40) and 60-year recovery secondary forest (SF60). Plant community dynamics were the key factor for regulating soil AMF communities among succession stages. An important biotic factor explaining variance in AMF community composition was root biomass. The correlation network analysis showed that although the nodes were similar among succession stages, the complexity of networks was significant higher in SF40 than in SC and SF60, suggesting that AMF communities were more active in SF40, which verified the hypothesis of intermediate disturbance hypothesis. This study provides new insights into AMF community dynamics and their driving factors across succession stages, as well as expanding knowledge of the ecological value of AMF for tropical forest restoration processes.

Abstract Underwater exploration has been an attractive topic for understanding the very nature of the lakes and even deep oceans. In recent years, extensive efforts have been devoted to developing functional materials and their integrated devices for underwater information capturing. However, there still remains a great challenge for water depth detection and vibration monitoring in a high-efficient, controllable, and scalable way. Inspired by the lateral line of fish that can sensitively sense the water depth and environmental stimuli, an ultrathin, elastic, and adaptive underwater sensor based on Ecoflex matrix with embedded assembled graphene sheets is fabricated. The graphene structured thin film is endowed with favourable adaptive and morphable features, which can conformally adhere to the structural surface and transform to a bulged state driven by water pressure. Owing to the introduction of the graphene-based layer, the integrated sensing system can actively detect the water depth with a wide range of 0.3–1.8 m. Furthermore, similar to the fish, the mechanical stimuli from land (e.g. knocking, stomping) and water (e.g. wind blowing, raining, fishing) can also be sensitively captured in real time. This graphene structured thin-film system is expected to demonstrate significant potentials in underwater monitoring, communication, and risk avoidance.

Abstract The explosive process of 5G communication evokes the urgent demand of miniaturized and integrated dielectric ceramics filter. It is a pressing need to advance the development of dielectric ceramics utilization of emerging technology to design new materials and understand the polarization mechanism. This review provides the summary of the study of microwave dielectric ceramics (MWDCs) sintered higher than 1000 from 2010 up to now, °C with the purpose of taking a broad and historical view of these ceramics and illustrating research directions. To date, researchers endeavor to explain the structure-property relationship of ceramics with multitude of approaches and design a new formula or strategy to obtain excellent microwave dielectric properties. There are variety of factors that impact the permittivity, dielectric loss, and temperature stability of dielectric materials, covering intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Many of these factors are often intertwined, which can complicate new dielectric material discovery and the mechanism investigation. Because of the various ceramics systems, pseudo phase diagram was used to classify the dielectric materials based on the composition. In this review, the ceramics were firstly divided into ternary systems, and then brief description of the experimental probes and complementary theoretical methods that have been used to discern the intrinsic polarization mechanisms and the origin of intrinsic loss was mentioned. Finally, some perspectives on the future outlook for high-temperature MWDCs were offered based on the synthesis method, characterization techniques, and significant theory developments.

Abstract Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) is a prognostic biomarker for many types of cancer. Here, we aimed to study the prognostic value of lncRNA in Breast Invasive Carcinoma (BRCA). We downloaded expression profiles from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets. Subsequently, we screened the differentially expressed genes between normal tissues and tumor tissues. Univariate Cox, LASSO regression, and multivariate Cox regression analysis were used to construct a lncRNA prognostic model. Finally, a nomogram based on the lncRNAs model was developed, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was used to predict mRNAs related to the model, and to perform function and pathway enrichment. We constructed a 6-lncRNA prognostic model. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the 6-lncRNA model could be used as an independent prognostic factor for BRCA patients. We developed a nomogram based on the lncRNAs model and age, and showed good performance in predicting the survival rates of BRCA patients. Also, functional pathway enrichment analysis showed that genes related to the model were enriched in cell cycle-related pathways. Tumor immune infiltration analysis showed that the types of immune cells and their expression levels in the high-risk group were significantly different from those in the low-risk group. In general, the 6-lncRNA prognostic model and nomogram could be used as a practical and reliable prognostic tool for invasive breast cancer.

Abstract Convective momentum transport (CMT) is the process of vertical redistribution of horizontal momentum by small‐scale turbulent flows from moist convection. Traditional general circulation models (GCMs) and their multiscale modeling framework (MMF) versions poorly represent CMT due to insufficient information of subgrid‐scale flows at each GCM grid. Here the explicit scalar momentum transport (ESMT) scheme for representing CMT is implemented in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model‐Multiscale Modeling Framework (E3SM‐MMF) with embedded 2‐D cloud‐resolving models (CRMs), and verified against E3SM‐MMF simulations with 3‐D CRMs and observations. The results show that representing CMT by ESMT helps reduce climatological mean precipitation model bias over the western Pacific and the ITCZ regions, which is attributed to the weakened mean easterlies over the Pacific. Also, CMT from simulations with 2‐D and 3‐D CRMs impose a similar impact on Kelvin waves by reducing their variability and slowing down their phase speed, but opposite impacts on the Madden‐Julian Oscillation (MJO) variability. The ESMT scheme readily captures the climatological mean spatial patterns of the zonal and meridional components of CMT and their variability across multiple time scales, but shows some differences in estimating its magnitude. CMT mainly affects the MJO by decelerating its winds in the free troposphere, but accelerates its near‐surface winds. This study serves as a prototype for implementing CMT scheme in the MMF simulations, highlighting its crucial role in reducing model bias in mean state and spatiotemporal variability.

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) is a ubiquitously occurring protease involved in various physiological and pathological processes ranging from glucose homeostasis, immunoregulation, inflammation to tumorigenesis. Recently, the benefits of DPP4 inhibitors as novel hypoglycemic agents on bone metabolism have attracted extensive attraction in many studies, indicating that DPP4 inhibitors may regulate bone homeostasis. The effects of DPP4 on bone metabolism are still unclear. This paper thoroughly reviews the potential mechanisms of DPP4 for interaction with adipokines, bone cells, bone immune cells, and cytokines in skeleton system. This literature review shows that the increased DPP4 activity may indirectly promote bone resorption and inhibit bone formation, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Thus, bone metabolic balance can be improved by decreasing DPP4 activities. The substantial evidence collected and analyzed in this review supports this implication.

The color and aroma are the significant traits of vegetables and fruits, but the metabolic and molecular mechanisms underlying anthocyanin accumulation and aroma formation remain almost unknown in fennel (Anethum foeniculum L.), which is a crucial vegetable crop and grown widely for aromatic leaves and bulbs. Here, ten major anthocyanins identified and quantified by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS) were mainly responsible for the coloration of purple fennel leaf. With the application of GC-MS, it was found that the reduced volatile phenylpropanoids including isoeugenol, trans-isoeugenol, and apiol chiefly account for the characteristic aroma changes of the purple fennel. Moreover, the characteristic anthocyanin coloration and aroma formation in purple fennel were systematically studied with the integrated transcriptomics and metabolomics. The critical genes associated with the biosynthesis and regulation of anthocyanins and volatile phenylpropanoids were isolated and studied carefully in transiently transfected tobacco cells and transgenic tomato plants. Together with the results of UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS, RT-qPCR, and yeast two hybrid (Y2H), it is proved that the metabolic flux redirection of phenylpropanoid pathway primarily regulated by a functional MYB-bHLH-WD40 complex consisting of AfTT8, AfMYB7, and AfTTG1 accounts for the characteristic anthocyanin coloration and aroma formation in purple fennel leaf. The systematic understanding of the anthocyanin accumulation and aroma formation will assist in the improvement of fennel resource utilization and breeding.

The purpose of this work is to study the accelerated aging behavior of a room-temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber anti-pollution flashover coating. Red, blue and gray RTV rubber samples were selected to prepare coatings on the surface of stainless-steel sheets. The accelerated aging test was carried out in an aging test chamber according to a four-step program cycle. After the completion of different aging tests, the color difference, glossiness, surface micromorphology, wettability, insulation performance and other parameters of the samples were measured using colorimetry, infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and a high-voltage breakdown tester. The results showed that with the increase in aging time, the color difference ∆Eab of the coatings increased. The G60 gloss value decreased gradually and tended to be saturated after 60 cycles. After the aging tests, the RTV coating surface had holes, cracks, peeling and other damage to varying degrees. The C:Si atomic ratio was less than 2, and the hydrophobicity was obviously deteriorated. After aging, the electrical strength of the three RTV coatings decreased significantly. It can be concluded that during the accelerated aging test, the RTV coating had cross-linking and oxidation reactions, and the internal deterioration and surface damage of the coating led to changes in its color, luster, morphology, insulation strength, etc.

Estimation of soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and its dynamics in tropical montane forests is crucial for climate change prediction, which calls for further investigation into the spatial variation in SOC and its stability mechanisms. In this study, 60 subplots (20 m × 20 m) were randomly selected within a 60 ha tropical montane rainforest dynamic monitoring plot located in southern China. The physical (HFC and LFC) and chemical fractions of SOC (alkyl C, O-alkyl C, aromatic C and carbonyl C), microbial biomass carbon and other soil properties at depths of 0–10 cm, plant species and root biomass (0–10 cm and 10–20 cm) were investigated. Geostatistical methods, multiple regression trees and redundant analysis were used to reveal that the spatial variations in SOC and its stability mechanisms with the terrain. The results show that the spatial variations in HFC and the ratios of alkyl carbon/O-alkyl carbon had a moderate spatial dependence due to the complex terrain. High SOC and its physical stability fractions (HFC) were distributed along ridgelines, while the chemical stability index of SOC (alkyl C/O-alkyl C) was the highest on hillsides and in valleys. Terrain convexity best explained the spatial variations in SOC and HFC, while total nitrogen and convexity together best explained the spatial variation in the chemical fractions of SOC. Abiotic factors explained more of the variation in SOC and its fractions than biotic factors, while abiotic and biotic factors were covariant. The specific factors controlling the distribution of SOC and its fractions differed with the types of micro-terrain. These results highlight the influence of terrain on the distribution and accumulation of SOC in tropical forest ecosystems. Hence, terrain should be considered a key factor in biogeochemical models.

Soil carbon (C) distribution, which is deeply correlated with soil extracellular enzyme activity and its temperature sensitivity (Q10), are important for predicting the soil organic carbon (SOC) pools under climate warming. However, the high spatial heterogeneity in tropical forest soils makes the predicted results vary significantly. Thus, a total of 87 soil samples of three forest types, eight slope orientations, and four vegetation types were selected from Wuzhishan in Hainan Island, China. SOC distribution, the activities of six soil enzymes, and Q10 at 10, 20, 30, and 40 °C were investigated to supplement the tropical data. The results showed that: (1) SOC ranged from 24.82 to 87.72 g/kg. SOC in the primary forest was significantly higher than that of the secondary forest, and SOC of the cloud forests and hilltop scrub at higher elevations was significantly higher than that of the lowland rainforests and montane rainforests at lower elevations. However, the amount of recalcitrant carbon in the primary forest was the lowest. (2) Under lab temperature conditions, the acid phosphatase and β-1,4-glucosidase in the plantation forest were significantly higher than that of the secondary forest, and the polyphenol oxidase and catalase in the plantation forest were significantly higher than that of the primary forest. Enzyme stoichiometry analysis indicated that microbials were limited by nitrogen in the study area. The six soil enzyme activities were strongly correlated with SOC and total nitrogen. (3) The Q10 of soil enzymes ranged from 0.61 to 1.92 under three temperature gradients. Most hydrolases enzymes (Q10 > 1) showed a positive response with temperatures from 10 to 30 °C, and showed a negative response (Q10 < 1) with temperatures from 30 to 40 °C. We concluded that the negative response of enzyme Q10 with global warming would slow down the SOC decomposition. Primary tropical forests could still sequester SOC; however, their ability to do so may be vulnerable to climate change, as the amount of soil C quality index was low.

Mechanisms of soil organic carbon (SOC) stability are still unclear in forest ecosystems. In order to unveil the influences of topography on the SOC stability, a 60ha dynamic plot of a tropical montane rainforest was selected in Jianfengling, in Hainan Island, China and soil was sampled from 60 quadrats. The chemical fractions of the SOC were detected with 13C CPMAS/NMR and path analyses explore the mechanisms of SOC stability in different topographies. The chemical fractions of the SOC comprised alkyl carbon > O-alkyl carbon > carboxyl carbon > aromatic carbon. The decomposition index (DI) values were greater than 1 in the different topographies, with an average DI value was 1.29, which indicated that the SOC in the study area was stable. Flat and top areas (together named RF) had more favorable nutrients and silt contents compared with steep and slight steep areas (together named RS). The influencing factors of SOC stability varied across the topographies, where SOC, soil moisture (SM) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4+-N, AN) were the main influencing factors in the RF, while SM and AN were the main factors in the RS. Greater SOC and AN strengthened the SOC stability, while higher soil moisture lowered SOC stability. The inertia index was higher in the RS than the RF areas, indicating that local topography significantly affects SOC content and SOC stability by changing soil environmental factors. Topography cannot be neglected in considering SOC stability and future C budgets.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) that frequently results in renal disease, and is characterized by a variety of symptoms, including albuminuria. It has been shown that apoptosis of glomerular mesangial cells (MCs) can aggravate albuminuria and contribute to the development of diabetic glomerulosclerosis. Hence, determination of the mechanisms leading to MC apoptosis may help us gain insights into the pathogenesis of DN. As our understanding of the role of high glucose (HG) in MC apoptosis remains elusive, we explored the interplay between X‐box binding protein 1 (XBP1) and MC apoptosis in this study. XBP1 was observed to be downregulated both in vivo and in vitro. Treatment of XBP1‐overexpressing cells with HG resulted in a decrease of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a suppression of cell apoptosis, concomitant with decreases in cleaved caspase‐3 and Bax. Subsequent analyses demonstrated that XBP1 overexpression inhibited the expression of phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome ten (PTEN) and enhanced the activation of AKT in MCs exposed to HG. In addition, XBP1‐induced injuries in MC were reversed by overexpression of PTEN, and XBP1 inhibited apoptosis, which was mediated by the activated PTEN/AKT signaling pathway. Thus, our data indicate that XBP1 can activate the PTEN/AKT signaling pathway, thereby alleviating oxidative stress caused by HG or MC apoptosis. These findings suggest that XBP1 may have potential in the development of treatment methods for DN.

The frustrated magnet Nd_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7}, where strong correlations together with spin-orbit coupling play a crucial role, is predicted to be a Weyl semimetal and to host topological pairs of bulk Dirac-like valleys. Here we use an external magnetic field to manipulate the localized rare-earth 4f moments coupled to the 5d electronic bands. Low-energy optical spectroscopy reveals that a field of only a few teslas suffices to create charge-compensating pockets of holes and electrons in different regions of momentum space, thus introducing a valley population shift that can be tuned with the field.

Decarbonization plans depend on the rapid, large-scale deployment of batteries to sufficiently decarbonize the electricity system and on-road transport. This can take many forms, shaped by technology, materials, and supply chain selection, which will have local and global environmental and social impacts. Current knowledge gaps limit the ability of decision-makers to make choices in facilitating battery deployment that minimizes or avoids unintended environmental and social consequences. These gaps include a lack of harmonized, accessible, and up-to-date data on manufacturing and supply chains and shortcomings within sustainability and social impact assessment methods, resulting in uncertainty that limits incorporation of research into policy making. These gaps can lead to unintended detrimental effects of large-scale battery deployment. To support decarbonization goals while minimizing negative environmental and social impacts, we elucidate current barriers to tracking how decision-making for large-scale battery deployment translates to environmental and social impacts and recommend steps to overcome them.

Non-microbial methane (NM-CH4), emissions from soil might play a significant role in carbon cycling and global climate change. However, the production mechanisms and emission potential of soil NM-CH4 from tropical rainforest remain highly uncertain. In order to explore the laws and characteristics of NM-CH4 emission from tropical rainforest soils. Incubation experiments at different environmental conditions (temperatures, soil water contents, hydrogen peroxide) and for soils with different soil organic carbon (SOC) contents were conducted to investigate the NM-CH4 emission characteristics and its influence factors of soils (0-10cm) that collected from a tropical rainforest in Hainan, China. Incubation results illustrated that soil NM-CH4 release showed a linear increase with the incubation time in the first 24 hours at 70 °C, whereas the logarithmic curve increase was found in 192 h incubation. Soil NM-CH4 emission rates under aerobic condition were significantly higher than that of under anaerobic condition at first 24 h incubation. The increasing of temperature, suitable soil water contents (0–100%), and hydrogen peroxide significantly promoted soil NM-CH4 emission rates at the first 24 h incubation. However, excessive soil water contents (200%) inhibited soil NM-CH4 emissions. According to the curve simulated from the NM-CH4 emission rates and incubation time at 70 °C of aerobic condition, soil would no longer release NM-CH4 after 229 h incubation. The NM-CH4 emissions were positively corelated with SOC contents, and the average soil NM-CH4 emission potential was about 6.91 ug per gram organic carbon in the tropical mountain rainforest. This study revealed that soils in the tropical rainforest could produce NM-CH4 under certain environment conditions and it supported production mechanisms of thermal degradation and reactive oxygen species oxidation. Those results could provide a basic data for understanding the soil NM-CH4 production mechanisms and its potential in the tropical rainforest.

Introduction Preliminary evidence from clinical observations suggests that Tai Chi exercise may offer potential benefits for patients with chronic coronary syndrom (CCS). However, the advantages for CCS patients to practice Tai Chi exercise as rehabilitation have not been rigorously tested and there is a lack of consensus on its benefits. This study aims to develop an innovative Tai Chi Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (TCCRP) for CCS patients and to assess the efficacy, safety and acceptability of the programme.Methods and analysis We propose to conduct a multicentre randomised controlled clinical trial comprising of 150 participants with CCS. The patients will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio into two groups. The intervention group will participate in a supervised TCCRP held three times a week for 3 months. The control group will receive supervised conventional exercise rehabilitation held three times a week for 3 months. The primary and secondary outcomes will be assessed at baseline, 1 month, 3 months after intervention and after an additional 3-month follow-up period. Primary outcome measures will include a score of 36-Item Short Form Survey and Chinese Perceived Stress Scale. The secondary outcome measures will include body composition, cardiopulmonary exercise test, respiratory muscle function, locomotor skills, echocardiogram, New York Heart Association classification, heart rate recovery time and laboratory examination. Other measures also include Seattle Angina Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 and Berg Balance Scale. All adverse events will be recorded and analysed.Ethics and dissemination This study conforms to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and relevant ethical guidelines. Ethical approval has been obtained from the Ethics Committee of Chinese People’s Libration Army General Hospital (approval number: S2019-060-02). Findings from this study will be published and presented at conferences for widespread dissemination of the results.Trial registration number NCT03936504.

Urban floods research has been attracting extensive attention with the increasing threat of flood risk and environmental hazards due to global climate change and urbanization. However, there is rarely a comprehensive review of this field and it remains unclear how the research topics on urban floods have evolved. In this study, we analyzed the development of urban floods research and explored the hotspots and frontiers of this field by scientific knowledge mapping. In total, 3314 published articles from 2006 to 2021 were analyzed. The results suggest that the number of published articles in the field of urban floods generally has an upward trend year by year, and the research focus has shifted from exploring hydrological processes to adopting advanced management measures to solve urban flood problems. Moreover, urban stormwater management and low impact development in the context of climate change and urbanization have gradually become research hotspots. Future research directions based on the status and trends of the urban floods field were also discussed. This research can not only inspire other researchers and policymakers, but also demonstrates the effectiveness of scientific knowledge mapping analysis by the use of the software CiteSpace and VOSviewer.

Composites incorporating metallic nanoparticles into metal-organic frameworks are potentially useful but controlling the nanoparticle spatial distribution is challenging. Here, the authors report a strategy that accomplishes this by using a metal oxide as both support and sacrificial template.

In the context of green development and sustainable development, in response to the national policy of “carbon neutrality and peak carbon dioxide emissions”, we will fully implement clean energy heating and reduce air pollution. Air energy is the representative, bringing the comfortable, efficient, safe and energy-saving environment to people. For an office building in Nanjing, which is located in hot-summer and cold-winter zone, an air source heat pump unit is designed as a cold and heat source system to meet the demand for heating in winter and cooling in summer. At the same time, compared with the traditional cold and heat source system which is designed central heating in winter and multi-line refrigeration in summer, the result of economic analysis shows that the use of air source heat pump as the cold and heat source system of office buildings is more economical and energy-saving. It is suitable to popularize and apply in China’s hot-summer and cold-winter zone.
