28. A soft, ultra-tough and multifunctional artificial muscle for volumetric muscle loss treatment

Abstract

The escalating prevalence of skeletal muscle disorders highlights the critical need for innovative treatments for severe injuries such as volumetric muscle loss. Traditional treatments, such as autologous transplants, are constrained by limited availability and current scaffolds often fail to meet complex clinical needs. This study introduces a new approach to volumetric muscle loss treatment by using a shape-memory polymer (SMP) based on block copolymers of perfluoropolyether and polycaprolactone diol. This SMP mimics the biomechanical properties of natural muscle, exhibiting a low elastic modulus (2–6 MPa), high tensile strength (72.67 ± 3.19 MPa), exceptional toughness (742.02 ± 23.98 MJ m−3) and superior biocompatibility, thereby enhancing skeletal muscle tissue integration and regeneration within 4 weeks. Moreover, the polymer's shape-memory behavior and ability to lift >5000 times its weight showcase significant potential in both severe muscle disorder treatment and prosthetic applications, surpassing existing scaffold technologies. This advancement marks a pivotal step in the development of artificial muscles for clinical use.A novel shape memory polymer mimics the properties of natural muscles, offering new hope for the treatment of severe muscle injuries and the enhancement of prosthetics with its remarkable strength, toughness, and biocompatibility.

40. Anion-site-modulated thermoelectric properties in Ge2Sb2Te5-based compounds.

Abstract

The amalgamation of multi-subjects often elicits novel materials, new concepts and unexpected applications. Recently, Ge2Sb2Te5, as the most established phase-change material, has been found to exhibit decent thermoelectric performance in its stable, hexagonal phase. The challenge for higher figure of merit (zT) values lies in reducing the hole carrier concentration and enhancing the Seebeck coefficient, which, however, can be hardly realized by conventional doping. Here in this work, we report that the electrical properties of Ge2Sb2Te5 can be readily optimized by anion-site modulation. Specifically, Se/S substitution for Te induces stronger and more ionic bonding, lowering the hole density. Furthermore, an increase in electronic density of state is introduced by Se substitution, contributing to a large increase in Seebeck coefficient. Combined with the reduced thermal conductivity, maximum zT values above 0.7 at 800 K have been achieved in Se/S-alloyed materials, which is ~ 30% higher than that in the pristine Ge2Sb2Te5. Abstract

Hierarchical core-shell hetero-arrays with well-controlled morphology, rational combination of hybrid electrochemical active materials are regarded as promising candidate electrodes for supercapacitors due to their excellent redox activity and electrical conductivity. However, their inferior rate performance and poor long-term cycling stability hinder their practical applications and still of great challenge. In this work, three hierarchical core-shell CuTCNQ@MWO 4 /CF (TCNQ = 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinonedimethane; M = Cu, Co and Ni) hetero-arrays on Cu foam with different morphology are successfully constructed by in situ conductive metal-organic framework templated synthetic route of an inter-facial growth and a hydrothermal synthesis process. The crystallinity of MWO 4 decorated on the conductive CuTCNQ nanoarrays plays important role in their electrochemical performances. Especially, the hierarchical tree-like CuTCNQ@CuWO 4 /CF hetero-arrays electrode can be used as high-performance positive electrode materials for supercapacitor, which exhibits excellent electrochemical properties with a high area capacitance (1073.3 mF/cm2 at 1 mA/cm2), excellent rate capability, low resistances and outstanding cycling stability with capacitance retention of 88.6% at 30 mA/cm2 after 10000 cycles. What's more, the CuTCNQ@CuWO 4 //AC ASC device delivers a high energy density of 0.075 mW h/cm2 (45 W h/kg) at a power density of 0.8 mW/cm2 (480 W/kg) and still achieves a energy density of 0.053 mW h/cm2 (32.1 W h/kg) at a power density of 4.00 mW/cm2 (2424 W/kg). Thus, this work demonstrates that a rational and effective strategy is explored to prepare hierarchical hetero-arrays with different morphology from conductive MOF-templated for high-performance energy storage in practical application. Three hierarchical core-shell CuTCNQ@MWO 4 /CF (M = Cu, Co and Ni) hetero-arrays on Cu foam with different morphologies are successfully obtained by in situ conductive metal-organic framework templated synthetic route of an inter-facial growth and a hydrothermal synthesis process. 44. Thermoelectric properties of Ag2S superionic conductor with intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity

Abstract

Recently, Ag2S superionic conductor has attracted great attention due to its metal-like ductility and deformability. In this work, the single phase Ag2S compound is fabricated by the melting-annealing method. The crystal structure, ionic conduction, and electrical and thermal transports in a temperature range of 300－600 K are systematically investigated. The monoclinic-cubic crystal structure transition occurs around 455 K for Ag2S. Significant reduction in the specific heat at constant volume below the Dulong-Petit limit is observed for Ag2S after the monoclinic-cubic phase transition, which is attributed to the liquid-like Ag ions existing inside the sulfur framework. Ag2S shows typical semiconducting-like electrical transport behavior in the whole measured temperature range. Around 455 K, the ionic conductivity, carrier concentration, carrier mobility, electrical conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient each show an abrupt change. The calculated ionic activation based on the ionic conductivity is 0.076 eV for the body centered cubic Ag2S. The calculated band gap based on the electrical conductivity decreases from 1.1 eV for the monoclinic Ag2S to 0.42 eV for the body centered cubic Ag2S. The abrupt increase of electrical conductivity after the monoclinic-cubic phase transition leads to a maximum power factor around 5 μW·cm–1·K–2 at 550 K. In the whole measured temperature range, Ag2S demonstrates an intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity (below 0.6 W·m–1·K–1). The calculated phonon dispersion indicates that the weak chemical bonding between Ag and S is responsible for the low lattice thermal conductivity observed in the monoclinic Ag2S. Likewise, the presence of liquid-like Ag ions with low ionic activation energy is responsible for the low lattice thermal conductivity for the cubic Ag2S. Finally, the Ag2S shows the maximum thermoelectric figure of merit of 0.55 at 580 K, which is comparable to the thermoelectric figure of merit reported before in most of Ag-based thermoelectric superionic conductors.
