Abstract

Precisely regulating surface reconstruction of copper (Cu) chalcogenides‐based catalysts to promote the multicarbon (C2+)selectivity of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is hampered by the challenging control of the intractable anions and the optimal Cuδ+ reduction (0 < δ < 1). Herein, a porous carbon‐supported copper selenides electrocatalyst that can remarkably improve the C2‐product yield and especially unveil the time‐revolved electrochemical CO2RR reconstruction process to enable the high C2‐selectivity, most notably for ethanol is constructed. The Faradic efficiency (FE) of C2‐products achieved is as high as ≈85.2% with a partial current density of 229.5 mA cm−2. Operando infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations unravel that the surface Se vacancies (VSe) formation brings closer the neighboring Cu+ atoms and activates the Cu sites, thereby rendering efficient generation of the key intermediates (*CO and *CHO) and lowering the C–C coupling barrier for C2 production. The appearance of metallic Cu can shorten the next‐nearest Cu0–Cu+ distance for O atom to bridge in, leading to the preferential formation of *OC2H4 towards ethanol instead of C–O bond cleavage to form ethylene. Abstract

Chalcogen vacancy has long been recognized as a detrimental deep‐level defect that can induce severe charge recombination and diminish the quasi‐Fermi‐level splitting in Sb2S3 and Sb2Se3, especially when they are prepared by physical vapor deposition in vacuum. In order to counter this limitation, a sulfur‐supplemented vapor transport deposition technique is proposed, which intentionally introduces low pressure sulfur vapor and can thus afford low‐defect‐density antimony chalcogenide films. The resultant photocathodes modified with conformal TiO2 protection layer and Pt cocatalyst demonstrate a photocurrent as high as 20 mA cm−2 along with a much improved fill factor and onset potential, achieving an applied bias photoconversion efficiency above 1%. Abstract

Narrowband photodetectors conventionally rely on optical structure design or bandpass filters to achieve the narrowband regime. Recently, a strategy for filterless narrowband photoresponse based on the charge collection narrowing (CCN) mechanism was reported. However, the CCN strategy requires an electrically and optically "thick" photoactive layer, which poses challenges in controlling the narrowband photoresponse. Here we propose a novel strategy for constructing narrowband photodetectors by leveraging the inherent ion migration in perovskites, which we term "band modulation narrowing" (BMN). By manipulating the ion migration with external stimuli such as illumination, temperature, and bias voltage, we can regulate in situ the energy‐band structure of perovskite photodetectors (PPDs) and hence their spectral response. Combining the Fermi energy levels obtained by the Kelvin probe force microscopy, the internal potential profiles from solar cell capacitance simulator simulation, and the anion accumulation revealed by the transient ion‐drift technique, we discover two critical mechanisms behind our BMN strategy: the extension of an optically active but electronically dead region proximal to the top electrode and the down‐bending energy bands near the electron transport layer. 16. Prompt Hole Extraction Suppresses V5+Dissolution and Sustains Large-Area BiVO4Photoanodes for Over 2100 h Water Oxidation

Abstract

Nanostructured bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is at the forefront of emerging photoanodes in photoelectrochemical tandem devices for solar water splitting owing to the suitable band edge position and efficient charge separation capability. However, the (photo)chemical corrosion involving V5+dissolution limits the long-term stability of BiVO4. Herein, guided by DFT calculations, we introduce an ALD-derived NiOxcatalyst layer on BiVO4to stabilize the surface Bi–O bonds, facilitate hole extraction, and thus suppress the V5+dissolution. At the same time, the ALD NiOxcatalyst layer could efficiently suppress the surface recombination and accelerate the surface OER kinetics, boosting the half-cell applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of BiVO4to 2.05%, as well as a fill factor of 47.1%. By adding trace NaVO3to the electrolyte, the NiOx/BiVO4photoanode with an illumination area of 10.5 cm2shows a record operational stability of more than 2100 h.

31. Enhancing photoelectrochemical water splitting by combining work function tuning and heterojunction engineering

Abstract

We herein demonstrate the unusual effectiveness of two strategies in combination to enhance photoelectrochemical water splitting. First, the work function adjustment via molybdenum (Mo) doping significantly reduces the interfacial energy loss and increases the open-circuit photovoltage of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photoelectrochemical cells. Second, the creation and optimization of the heterojunction of boron (B) doping carbon nitride (C3N4) and Mo doping BiVO4 to enforce directional charge transfer, accomplished by work function adjustment via B doping for C3N4, substantially boost the charge separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs at the B-C3N4 and Mo-BiVO4 interface. The synergy between the above efforts have significantly reduced the onset potential, and enhanced charge separation and optical properties of the BiVO4-based photoanode, culminating in achieving a record applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 2.67% at 0.54 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode. Abstract

Constructing 3D nanophotonic structures is regarded as an effective means to realize both efficient light absorption and efficient charge separation. However, most of the 3D structures reported so far enhance light trapping beyond the absorption onset wavelength, and thus greatly attentuate or even completely block the long-wavelength light, which could otherwise be efficiently absorbed by narrow-bandgap materials in a Z-scheme or tandem device. In addition, constructing a 3D conductive substrate often involves complex processes causing increased cost and upscaling problems. To overcome these shortcomings, a novel 3D hematite nanorod@nanobowl array nanophotonic structure is designed and fabricated by a low-cost method. This unique structure can enhance light absorption with tunable cutoffs and rationally concentrate photons right above the bowl bottom, enabling efficient charge separation. By loading NiFeO x as a cocatalyst, a high photocurrent density of 3.41 ± 0.2 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) can be obtained, which is 2.35 times that with a planar structure in otherwise the same system. © 2019 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract

Hematite nanoarchitecture offers opportunities to simultaneously enhance the light harvesting and charge transport, which are the key to boosting the photoactivity for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. However, it still remains a challenge to efficiently design and synthesize the nanostructures realizing that in hematite photoanodes. To address this problem, herein we develop an ingenious hierarchical ball-on-wire-array (BWA) structure that can simultaneously improve light harvesting and carrier transport, via a serial growth strategy that is able to feasibly decorate hematite nanowire arrays with in situ generated tunable nanoballs. The simulation and experimental results prove that the nanoballs provide additional light trapping for the augmented light scattering and absorption, and synchronously the orientational nanowire arrays enhance the charge transport in the hierarchical nanostructure. As a result, the hematite BWA photoanode coated with a nickel-iron-based oxygen evolution catalyst (OEC) achieves an outstanding photocurrent density up to 2.3 mA cm -2 at 1.23 V vs RHE. Abstract

The BiVO4 photoelectrochemical (PEC) electrode in tandem with a photovoltaic (PV) cell has shown great potential to become a compact and cost‐efficient device for solar hydrogen generation. However, the PEC part is still facing problems such as the poor charge transport efficiency owing to the drag of oxygen vacancy bound polarons. In the present work, to effectively suppress oxygen vacancy formation, a new route has been developed to synthesize BiVO4 photoanodes by using a highly oxidative two‐dimensional (2D) precursor, bismuth oxyiodate (BiOIO3), as an internal oxidant. With the reduced defects, namely the oxygen vacancies, the bound polarons were released, enabling a fast charge transport inside BiVO4 and doubling the performance in tandem devices based on the oxygen vacancy eliminated BiVO4.
