Abstract

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading killer of human life worldwide. Clinically, stent implantation with percutaneous coronary intervention has become a standard and effective method to treat coronary artery disease. A large amount of research work has been carried out to investigate the mechanical, degradation and fatigue behavior for permanent metallic stents, but not for bioresorbable polymeric stents. Such research gaps are urgently required to be addressed, as bioresorbable polymeric stents are regarded as the next generation medical devices, even replacing metallic stents. In this thesis, pioneering efforts have been made to systematically study the mechanical behavior of polymeric stents using finite element method, which are novel and have not been reported in literature yet.

Abstract

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading killer of humans worldwide. Bioresorbable polymeric stents have attracted a great deal of interest because they can treat CAD without producing long-term complications. Bioresorbable polymeric stents (BMSs) have undergone a sustainable revolution in terms of material processing, mechanical performance, biodegradability and manufacture techniques. Biodegradable polymers and copolymers have been widely studied as potential material candidates for bioresorbable stents. It is a great challenge to find a reasonable balance between the mechanical properties and degradation behavior of bioresorbable polymeric stents. Surface modification and drug-coating methods are generally used to improve biocompatibility and drug loading performance, which are decisive factors for the safety and efficacy of bioresorbable stents. Traditional stent manufacture techniques include etching, micro-electro discharge machining, electroforming, die-casting and laser cutting. The rapid development of 3D printing has brought continuous innovation and the wide application of biodegradable materials, which provides a novel technique for the additive manufacture of bioresorbable stents. This review aims to describe the problems regarding and the achievements of biodegradable stents from their birth to the present and discuss potential difficulties and challenges in the future.

40. Cyclic stress–strain response and crystal plasticity finite element analysis of AISI 9310 steel in biaxial fatigue loading.

Abstract

There are still many gaps in the research on the multiaxial fatigue failure mechanism of the gear shaft. In this paper, cyclic stress–strain response and biaxial fatigue damage characteristics of gear steel AISI 9310 were investigated. The specimens showed obvious cyclic softening characteristics at all phase angles, and the softening rate was directly associated with the initiation and propagation of cracks. The fractographies at different phase angles revealed that the specimens under out‐of‐phase loading suffered fatigue failure caused by a single crack source on the surface, while the fatigue crack under in‐phase loading was gathered together by the propagation of different crack sources. Finally, the established crystal plastic finite element model showed a good prediction of the plastic strain energy density at different phase angles, and the maximum error was 13.03%. Furthermore, a biaxial fatigue life prediction method was proposed, with a maximum error of 39.5%. Highlights: Plastic strain energy density shows logarithmic relationship with the number of cycles.The OP loading fatigue crack propagation failure was caused by a single crack source.The established crystal plastic model could effectively simulate plastic strain energy density.A fatigue life prediction method was proposed, with a maximum error of 39.5%. Abstract

Bioresorbable polymeric stents have attracted great interest for coronary artery disease because they can provide mechanical support first and then disappear within a desired time period. The conventional manufacturing process is laser cutting, and generally they are fabricated from tubular prototypes produced by injection molding or melt extrusion. The aim of this study is to fabricate and characterize a novel bioresorbable polymeric stent for treatment of coronary artery disease. Polycaprolactone (PCL) is investigated as suitable material for biomedical stents. A rotary 3D printing method is developed to fabricate the polymeric stents. Surface modification of polymeric stent is performed by immobilization of 2-N, 6-O-sulfated chitosan (26SCS). Physical and chemical characterization results showed that the surface microstructure of 3D-pinted PCL stents can be influenced by 26SCS modification, but no significant difference was observed for their mechanical behavior. Biocompatibility assessment results indicated that PCL and S-PCL stents possess good compatibility with blood and cells, and 26SCS modification can enhance cell proliferation. These results suggest that 3D printed PCL stent can be a potential candidate for coronary artery disease by modification of sulfated chitosan (CS).

45. WO3@Fe2O3Core-Shell Heterojunction Photoanodes for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production from water splitting is a green technology to convert solar energy into renewable hydrogen fuel. The construction of host/guest architecture in semiconductor photoanodes has been proven to be an effective strategy to improve solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency. In this study, WO3@Fe2O3core-shell nanoarray heterojunction photoanodes are synthesized from the in-situdecomposition of WO3@Prussian blue (WO3@PB) and then used as host/guest photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting, during which Fe2O3serves as guest material to absorb visible solar light and WO3can act as host scaffolds to collect electrons at the contact. The prepared WO3@Fe2O3shows the enhanced photocurrent density of 1.26 mA cm−2(under visible light) at 1.23 V. vs RHE and a superior IPEC of 24.4% at 350 nm, which is higher than that of WO3@PB and pure WO3(0.43 mA/cm−2and 16.3%, 0.18 mA/cm−2and 11.5%) respectively, owing to the efficient light-harvesting from Fe2O3and the enhanced electron-hole pairs separation from the formation of type-II heterojunctions, and the direct and ordered charge transport channels from the one-dimensional (1D) WO3nanoarray nanostructures. Therefore, this work provides an alternative insight into the construction of sustainable and cost-effective photoanodes to enhance the efficiency of the solar-driven water splitting.

46. Molybdenum Sulfide Quantum Dots Decorated on TiO2 for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Abstract

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been identified as an active non-noble-metal-based cocatalyst for photocatalytic water splitting. Here, a TiO2 nanoplate/amorphous MoS2 quantum dot (a-MoS2) composite was developed via in situ sulfuration of MoO3/TiO2. Due to intimate chemical bonding instead of electrostatic adsorption between TiO2 and MoO3, effective transfer of electrons from TiO2 to a-MoS2 is achieved. Additionally, a-MoS2 with an outstanding electron conveying ability can function as an electron collector and catalytic sites. As a result, the obtained a-MoS2/TiO2 nanocomposite achieved an average yield of H2 up to 371 μmol·g–1·h–1 when the content of the cocatalyst was 1.5 wt %, which is 309 and 79 times those of bare TiO2 and trigonally coordinated MoS2/TiO2, respectively. The highest yield rate of H2 up to 880.3 μmol·g–1·h–1 was obtained over a-MoS2/TiO2. This work may provide a wider perspective on the preparation of a low-cost cocatalyst with high conversion efficiency, to replace other commonly used MoS2-based cocatalysts to solve the energy crisis. 49. Bismuth Vacancy-Induced Efficient CO2Photoreduction in BiOCl Directly from Natural Air: A Progressive Step toward Photosynthesis in Nature

Abstract

Photocatalytic CO2conversion into carbonaceous fuels through artificial photosynthesis is beneficial to global warming mitigation and renewable resource generation. However, a high cost is always required by special CO2-capturing devices for efficient artificial photosynthesis. For achieving highly efficient photocatalytic CO2reduction (PCR) directly from natural air, we report rose-like BiOCl that is rich in Bi vacancies (VBi) assembled by nanosheets with almost fully exposed active {001} facets. These rose-like BiOCl with VBiassemblies provide considerable adsorption and catalytic sites, which hoists the CO2capture and reduction capabilities, and thus expedites the PCR to a superior value of 21.99 μmol·g–1·h–1CO generation under a 300 W Xe lamp within 5 h from natural air. The novel design and construction of a photocatalyst in this work could break through the conventional PCR system requiring compression and purification for CO2, dramatically reduce expenses, and open up new possibilities for the practical application of artificial photosynthesis.
