Zinc is an essential trace metal for oceanic primary producers with the highest concentrations in polar oceans. However, its role in the biological functioning and adaptive evolution of polar phytoplankton remains enigmatic. Here, we have applied a combination of evolutionary genomics, quantitative proteomics, co-expression analyses and cellular physiology to suggest that model polar phytoplankton species have a higher demand for zinc because of elevated cellular levels of zinc-binding proteins. We propose that adaptive expansion of regulatory zinc-finger protein families, co-expanded and co-expressed zinc-binding proteins families involved in photosynthesis and growth in these microalgal species and their natural communities were identified to be responsible for the higher zinc demand. The expression of their encoding genes in eukaryotic phytoplankton metatranscriptomes from pole-to-pole was identified to correlate not only with dissolved zinc concentrations in the upper ocean but also with temperature, suggesting that environmental conditions of polar oceans are responsible for an increased demand of zinc. These results suggest that zinc plays an important role in supporting photosynthetic growth in eukaryotic polar phytoplankton and that this has been critical for algal colonization of low-temperature polar oceans.

Abstract Autonomic dysregulation in Parkinson’s disease (PD) can precede motor deficits and is associated with reduced quality of life, disease progression, and increased mortality. Objective markers of autonomic involvement in PD are limited. Corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) is a rapid ophthalmic technique that can quantify small nerve damage in a range of peripheral and autonomic neuropathies. Here we investigated whether CCM can be used to assess autonomic symptoms in PD. Based on the scale for outcomes in Parkinson’s disease for autonomic symptoms (SCOPA-AUT), patients with PD were classified into those without autonomic symptoms (AutD-N), with single (AutD-S), and multiple (AutD-M) domain autonomic dysfunction. Corneal nerve fiber pathology was quantified using CCM, and the relationship with autonomic symptoms was explored. The study enrolled 71 PD patients and 30 control subjects. Corneal nerve fiber density (CNFD), corneal nerve branch density (CNBD), corneal nerve fiber length (CNFL), and CNBD/CNFD ratio were lower in PD patients with autonomic symptoms compared to those without autonomic symptoms. Autonomic symptoms correlated positively with CNFD (r = −0.350, p = 0.004), and were not related to Levodopa equivalent daily dose (r = 0.042, p = 0.733) after adjusting for age, disease severity, disease duration or cognitive function. CCM parameters had high sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing patients with PD with and without autonomic symptoms. PD patients with autonomic symptoms have corneal nerve loss, and CCM could serve as an objective ophthalmic imaging technique to identify patients with PD and autonomic symptoms.

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a heterogeneous movement disorder with patients manifesting with either tremor-dominant (TD) or postural instability and gait disturbance (PIGD) motor subtypes. Small nerve fiber damage occurs in patients with PD and may predict motor progression, but it is not known whether it differs between patients with different motor subtypes. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore whether there was an association between the extent of corneal nerve loss and different motor subtypes. Methods: Patients with PD classified as TD, PIGD, or mixed subtype underwent detailed clinical and neurological evaluation and corneal confocal microscopy (CCM). Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia 1 gene (MEN1), which is known to be a tumor suppressor gene in lung tissues, encodes a 610 amino acid protein menin. Previous research has proven that MEN1 deficiency promotes the malignant progression of lung cancer. However, the biological role of this gene in the immune microenvironment of lung cancer remains unclear. In this study, we found that programmed cell death‐ligand 1 (PD‐L1) is upregulated in lung‐specific KrasG12D mutation‐induced lung adenocarcinoma in mice, after Men1 deficiency. Simultaneously, CD8+ and CD3+ T cells are depleted, and their cytotoxic effects are suppressed. In vitro, PD‐L1 is inhibited by the overexpression of menin. Aluminum and aluminum alloys are widely utilized metal materials. When they are used as surfaces working below 0℃, the anti-icing protection is of great importance for the operation safety of facilities. Two types of aluminum-based anti-icing surfaces were introduced, including superhydrophobic surfaces and organic lubricating layers. First, methods of preparation of micro/nanostructures and surface energy lowering for aluminum-based anti-icing surfaces were discussed, followed by the summarization of their advantages and disadvantages. Then, the characterization of anti-icing performances for aluminum-based surfaces was introduced, including delay of droplets freezing and ice adhesion strength, by which the difference of the anti-icing performance of aluminum-based surfaces can be evaluated. In the end, it was put forward that the future research should be focused on the durability and sustainability of aluminum-based anti-icing surfaces during icing/de-icing cycles.

Abstract Cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease (PD) adversely influences quality of life. There is currently no available biomarker to predict cognitive decline in PD. Corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) has been used as a non-invasive tool for quantifying small nerve damage in PD. The present study investigated whether corneal nerve measures were associated with cognitive function in PD. Porphyra umbilicalis (laver) belongs to an ancient group of red algae (Bangiophyceae), is harvested for human food, and thrives in the harsh conditions of the upper intertidal zone. Here we present the 87.7-Mbp haploid Porphyra genome (65.8% G + C content, 13,125 gene loci) and elucidate traits that inform our understanding of the biology of red algae as one of the few multicellular eukaryotic lineages. Novel features of the Porphyra genome shared by other red algae relate to the cytoskeleton, calcium signaling, the cell cycle, and stress-tolerance mechanisms including photoprotection. Cytoskeletal motor proteins in Porphyra are restricted to a small set of kinesins that appear to be the only universal cytoskeletal motors within the red algae. Dynein motors are absent, and most red algae, including Porphyra, lack myosin. This surprisingly minimal cytoskeleton offers a potential explanation for why red algal cells and multicellular structures are more limited in size than in most multicellular lineages. Additional discoveries further relating to the stress tolerance of bangiophytes include ancestral enzymes for sulfation of the hydrophilic galactan-rich cell wall, evidence for mannan synthesis that originated before the divergence of green and red algae, and a high capacity for nutrient uptake. Our analyses provide a comprehensive understanding of the red algae, which are both commercially important and have played a major role in the evolution of other algal groups through secondary endosymbioses.

Transcriptome and genome data from twenty stony coral species and a selection of reference bilaterians were studied to elucidate coral evolutionary history. We identified genes that encode the proteins responsible for the precipitation and aggregation of the aragonite skeleton on which the organisms live, and revealed a network of environmental sensors that coordinate responses of the host animals to temperature, light, and pH. Furthermore, we describe a variety of stress-related pathways, including apoptotic pathways that allow the host animals to detoxify reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that are generated by their intracellular photosynthetic symbionts, and determine the fate of corals under environmental stress. Some of these genes arose through horizontal gene transfer and comprise at least 0.2% of the animal gene inventory. Our analysis elucidates the evolutionary strategies that have allowed symbiotic corals to adapt and thrive for hundreds of millions of years.

In situ recordings by the solar Wind spacecraft reveal the ubiquitousness of alpha particles, whose drift velocities to the background proton vα are generally less than or equal to the local Alfvén velocity vA. The alpha beam instability plays a significant role in the alpha beam deceleration in the solar wind; nonetheless, the detailed mechanism of deceleration remains unclear. By using the linear Vlasov equation of the PDRK/B0 solver, the present work investigates the kinetic instability caused by both the alpha beam and the electron temperature anisotropy in the solar wind and assesses the effects of the electron temperature anisotropy on such instability. The results show that both anisotropic electrons and alpha beams lead to the excitation of several plasma waves, and the wave frequency, growth rate, and polarization properties are sensitive to the electron temperature anisotropy (Te⊥/Te‖), the parallel electron beta (βe‖), and the alpha beam drift velocity (vα/vA). With an excess parallel temperature Te⊥/Te‖<1, the parallel magnetosonic/whistler (PM/W), parallel Alfvén wave (PAW), and oblique Alfvén/ion cyclotron (OA/IC) instabilities could be generated, while for an excess perpendicular temperature Te⊥/Te‖>1, the PM/W, OA/IC, parallel whistler (PW), and kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) instabilities could grow. In the region of Te⊥/Te‖<1, the thresholds of the PM/W, PAW, and OA/IC instabilities extend to lower drift velocity vα/vA. In the region of Te⊥/Te‖>1, the thresholds of the PM/W and OA/IC instabilities increase, while those of the PW and KAW instabilities are shifted to lower vα/vA. The current study presents a comprehensive overview for alpha beam instabilities that limit the alpha beam drift velocity in the solar wind.

Background and purpose: In recent years, there has been extensive research on the role of exercise as an adjunctive therapy for cancer. However, the potential mechanisms underlying the anti-tumor therapy of exercise in lung cancer remain to be fully elucidated. As such, our study aims to confirm whether exercise-induced elevation of epinephrine can accelerate CD8+ T cell recruitment through modulation of chemokines and thus ultimately inhibit tumor progression. Method: C57BL/6 mice were subcutaneously inoculated with Lewis lung cancer cells (LLCs) to establish a subcutaneous tumor model. The tumor mice were randomly divided into different groups to performed a moderate-intensity exercise program on a treadmill for 5 consecutive days a week, 45 min a day. The blood samples and tumor tissues were collected after exercise for IHC, RT-qPCR, ELISA and Western blot. In addition, another group of mice received daily epinephrine treatment for two weeks (0.05 mg/mL, 200 µL i.p.) (EPI, n = 8) to replicate the effects of exercise on tumors in vivo. Lewis lung cancer cells were treated with different concentrations of epinephrine (0, 5, 10, 20 µM) to detect the effect of epinephrine on chemokine levels via ELISA and RT-qPCR. Results: This study reveals that both pre- and post-cancer exercise effectively impede the tumor progression. Exercise led to an increase in EPI levels and the infiltration of CD8+ T cell into the lung tumor. Exercise-induced elevation of EPI is involved in the regulation of Ccl5 and Cxcl10 levels further leading to enhanced CD8+ T cell infiltration and ultimately inhibiting tumor progression. Conclusion: Exercise training enhance the anti-tumor immunity of lung cancer individuals. Using a hand-collected sample of non-financial firms listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) over the period of 2011–2021, we examine the joint effect of intellectual capital and innovation on the financial vulnerability of a firm, which is an important risk factor that a firm may face in its operation. We first use the static fixed-effect panel model as our baseline regression model and find that the level of intellectual capital of a firm strengthens the positive effect of the adoption of product and market innovation on reducing the financial vulnerability of the firm. We also conduct additional analyses using alternative measures of financial vulnerability, as well as various regression models, and confirm that the results are robust under different scenarios. Overall, the results highlight the positive role of the intellectual capital, as well as the joint effect of intellectual capital and innovation, in mitigating the financial vulnerability faced by a firm and thus have academic and practical implications to academic researchers and practitioners. This paper presents a non-orthogonal multiple access(NOMA) relay method which is based on mmWave wireless heterogeneous system and can support Internet of things(IoT) applications. The scheme takes advantage of the deployment specialty of low power relays，together with energy harvesting capabilities of IoT devices，so that it can infer the performance of UEs with relay collaboration. With the help of a relay or IoT device, the downstream NOMA transmission consists of two phases.(1)The base station(BS) transmits the composite signal to the user equipment(UE) and the selected relay device simultaneously by applying the NOMA. (2)The BS sends another signal to the UE 1 while the relay device transmits the signal to the UE 2. The simulation results show that the method designed in this paper is feasible and effective.
