Introduction Respiratory dysfunction is a notable complication in stroke patients, in which the diaphragm, as the primary respiratory muscle, directly influences lung function. Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (rPMS) is a new, non-invasive approach that is used to treat brain and nerve problems. Few studies have examined the effect of magnetic stimulation on the phrenic nerve, breathing and diaphragm in stroke patients. This study aims to assess the effect of magnetic phrenic nerve stimulation on respiratory muscle function and lung function in adults with stroke. The results of this study may provide a promising approach to managing respiratory dysfunction in stroke patients.Methods and analysis This randomised controlled trial is designed to compare the effectiveness of bilateral magnetic phrenic nerve stimulation (rPMS) and conventional rehabilitation training in enhancing respiratory muscle strength, lung function indicators, diaphragmatic excursion and diaphragm thickness in patients with respiratory muscle weakness. Thirty patients admitted to the First Hospital of Fujian Medical University will be included in this study. Participants in the intervention group will undergo daily bilateral magnetic phrenic nerve stimulation for 2 weeks. Stimulation will be administered at a frequency of 25 Hz, with a pulse duration of 1.1 s and an inter-pulse interval of 5.9 s, for 5 days each week. Primary outcome measures will be assessed at baseline and after 2 weeks (end of the intervention) to evaluate the efficacy of rPMS compared with conventional rehabilitation techniques.Ethics and dissemination Before commencing the study, all participants will receive a comprehensive explanation of the study procedures, including the assessments. They will also be provided informed consent forms for review, completion and signing. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee for Research at the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University (No.: MRCTA, ECFAH of FMU [2021]641, dated 10 November 2023) (Appendix Ⅰ & Ⅱ). The trial protocol will strictly adhere to the Uniform Standards for Reporting of Trials (CONSORT) statement. The trial has been registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry.Dissemination of individual findings for each participant will be available at the end of the study. The findings will be disseminated to different interest groups, participants or other patients with respiratory dysfunction through journal papers and/or conference presentations. The results of the primary trial will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.Registration ChiCTR2300075669, registered on 12 September 2023.

Understanding the effects of salinity on soil structure and hydraulic properties is critical for addressing environmental challenges in coastal saline and sodic areas. In this study, soil samples were collected from a coastal region in eastern China to investigate how salinity affected the soil structure and hydraulic properties based on lab experiments. A comprehensive soil dataset was also compiled from the experimental results to develop a salinity-based pedotransfer function (PTF-S) tailored to the coastal environment. The results showed that salinity significantly altered the soil aggregate size distribution and hydraulic properties. Higher salinity promoted the formation of larger aggregates (0.25–2 mm), particularly in silty clay soil. Salinity positively correlated with the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) in sandy loam soil, regardless of the cation type (Na⁺ or Ca2⁺). By comparison, Na+ increased the Ks of silty clay soil up to a certain threshold, while Ca2+ enhanced the Ks regardless of the soil texture. Increased salinity also reduced the soil water retention of sandy loam soil; however, Na+ increased the soil water retention of silty clay soil and Ca2+ had different effects depending on the suction levels. The newly developed PTF-S model, which included the electrical conductivity (EC) and cation exchange capacity (CEC), showed better predictions for the volumetric water content (R = 0.886 and RMSE = 0.057 cm3/cm3) and log Ks (R = 0.991 and RMSE = 0.073 mm/h) than the traditional model that excludes the salinity variables EC and CEC (PTF-N) (R = 0.839 and RMSE = 0.066 cm3/cm3 for the volumetric water content, and R = 0.966 and RMSE = 0.140 mm/h for the log Ks). This study highlights the importance of developing salinity-based PTFs for addressing soil salinization challenges.

Background: The pathogenesis of pulmonary senescence involves immune system dysregulation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction. The effects on lung function of niacin, an essential coenzyme involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism with known antioxidant properties, are poorly understood. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2007–2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, including spirometry data and niacin intake information of 9706 adults. This study investigated various spirometry measures, such as forced expiratory volume in 1 s, forced vital capacity, pulse expiratory flow, (forced expiratory volume in 1 s)/(forced vital capacity)ratio, and predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s and forced vital capacity percentages. Additionally, a secondary analysis was conducted using Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Foundation Spirometry Grade criteria to assess the relationship between niacin intake, airflow limitation, and obstruction. Multivariate regression models were used to adjust for relevant covariates. Results: The study included 9706 U S. adults (4788 men and 4918 women) with a median age of 46.2 years. After adjusting for relevant factors, a positive correlation was observed between niacin intake and lung function. Compared to the lowest quintile of niacin intake (Q1, ≤14.5 mg/day), individuals in the highest quintile (Q5, >34.5 mg/day) exhibited significant increases in lung function parameters, including forced expiratory volume in 1s (69.84 mL, p = 0.003), pulse expiratory flow (254.48 mL, p

BackgroundThe characteristics of disorders of consciousness (DOC) are changes in arousal and/or awareness caused by severe brain injuries. To date, the management of DOC patients remains a complex and challenging task, and neuromodulation techniques offer a promising solution. However, a bibliometric analysis focusing on neuromodulation techniques in DOC is currently absent. The aim of this study is to provide a bibliometric visualization analysis to investigate the research hotspots and frontiers in the field of neuromodulation techniques in DOC from 2012 to 2022.MethodsThe publications were collected and retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) from 2012 to 2022. CiteSpace and Microsoft Excel were utilized perform the first global bibliographic analysis of the literature related to neuromodulation techniques for DOC.ResultsThe analysis included a total of 338 publications. From 2012 to 2022, a consistent yet irregular increase in the number of articles published on neuromodulation techniques in DOC was observed. Frontiers in Neurology published the highest number of papers (n = 16). Neurosciences represented the main research hotspot category (n = 170). The most prolific country, institution, and author were the USA (n = 105), the University of Liege (n = 41), and Laureys Steven (n = 38), respectively. An analysis of keywords revealed that UWS/VS, MCS, and TMS constituted the primary research trends and focal points within this domain.ConclusionThis bibliometric study sheds light on the current progress and emerging trends of neuromodulation techniques in DOC from 2012 to 2022. The focal topics in this domain encompass the precise diagnosis of consciousness levels in patients suffering from DOC and the pursuit of efficacious neuromodulation-based evaluation and treatment protocols for such patients.

Abstract Objective The aim of this review is to identify and summarize factors that are associated with public attitudes towards people with various disabilities systematically. Methods An electronic search of three databases was performed (Medline, EMBASE and Cochrane) covering the period from 1950 to present. A comprehensive search strategy was developed and the lists of citations were screened for potential eligible studies. Only quantitative studies using valid measurements were included, and the methodological quality of included studies was appraised based on three criteria (sample, measurement, analysis) by two independent reviewers. Results The initial electronic search yielded 995 articles after duplicates removed, and 27 studies met the eligibility criteria were included in the study. Three categories of the factors were found to be associated with the public attitudes, which are related to the attitude provider, disabled people, and society respectively. Specifically, the more people know about disabilities, the more likely they were to have positive attitude; and the frequency and quality of the contact with the disabled are also proved to be influential to the attitudes. Meanwhile, the type of disability is also closely correlated to the public’s attitude towards the disabilities. Conclusion People’s knowledge of the disability and their contact with individuals with disabilities are the main influential factors in public attitudes towards persons with disabilities.

ObjectiveHigh-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) induces analgesic effects in both experimental pain and clinical pain conditions. However, whether rTMS can modulate sensory and pain thresholds on sensory fibers is still unclear. Here, we compared the effects of three rTMS paradigms on sensory and pain thresholds conducted by different sensory fibers (Aβ, Aδ, and C fibers) with sham stimulation and investigate the potential brain activation using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).MethodsForty right-handed healthy subjects were randomly allocated into one of four groups. Each subject received one session rTMS [prolonged continuous theta-burst stimulation (pcTBS), intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS), 10 Hz rTMS or sham]. Current perception threshold (CPT), pain tolerance threshold (PTT), and fNIRS were measured at baseline, immediately after stimulation, and 1 h after stimulation, respectively.ResultsSignificant differences between treatments were observed for changes for CPT 2,000 Hz between baseline and 1 h after rTMS (F = 6.551, P < 0.001): pcTBS versus sham (P = 0.004) and pcTBS versus 10 Hz rTMS (P = 0.007). There were significant difference in average HbO μm in the right frontopolar cortex (FPC) [channel 23: P = 0.030 (pcTBS versus sham: P = 0.036)], left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) [channel 7: P = 0.006 (pcTBS versus sham: P = 0.004)], left FPC [channel 17: P = 0.014 (pcTBS versus sham: P = 0.046), channel 22: P = 0.004 (pcTBS versus sham: P = 0.004)] comparing four group in 1 h after stimulation in PTT 2000 Hz (Aβ-fiber).ConclusionProlonged continuous theta-burst stimulation can regulate sensitivity on Aβ fibers. In addition, single-session pcTBS placed on left M1 can increase the excitability of DLPFC and FPC, indicating the interaction between M1 and prefrontal cortex may be a potential mechanism of analgesic effect of rTMS. Studies in patients with central post-stroke pain are required to confirm the potential clinical applications of pcTBS.

Abstract Background MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as the critical modulators of the tumorigenesis and tumor progression. Methods The levels of miR-663 in ovarian cancer cell lines and clinical tissues were detected using qRT-PCR assays. The Transwell invasion and wound healing assay were conducted to assess the roles of miR-663 in the migration and invasion of ovarian cancer cell in vitro. Rescue assays were carried out to confirm the contribution of tumor suppressor candidate 2 (TUSC2) in the aggressiveness of cancer cell which was regulated by miR-663. Results The levels of miR-663 were up-regulated in ovarian cancer tissues in comparison with the corresponding normal tissues. Up-regulation of miR-663 increased the proliferation, colony formation, migration and invasion of ovarian cancer SKOV3 cell. Additional, over-expression of miR-663 increased the tumor growth of SKOV3 in xenograft model. Bioinformatics analysis and luciferase reporter assay identified that miR-663 decreased the level of TUSC2 via binding to the 3′-UTR of TUSC2 gene. Finally, the expression of TUSC2 was inversely associated with the level of miR-663 in ovarian carcinoma tissue and over-expression of TUSC2 inhibited the migration and invasion abilities of SKOV3 that was promoted by miR-663. Conclusion Altogether, these results indicate that miR-663 acts as a potential tumor-promoting miRNA through targeting TUSC2 in ovarian cancer.

The present study was designed to detect possible biomarkers associated with diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) incidence in an effort to develop novel treatments for this condition. The GSE7014 and GSE29221 gene expression datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, after which differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between DFU and healthy samples. These DEGs were then arranged into a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway and Gene Ontology (GO) term enrichment analyses were performed to explore the functional roles of these genes. In total, 1192 DEGs were identified in the GSE7014 dataset (900 upregulated, 292 downregulated), while 1177 were identified in the GSE29221 dataset (257 upregulated, 919 downregulated). GO analyses revealed these DEGs to be significantly enriched in biological processes including sarcomere organization, muscle filament sliding, and the regulation of cardiac conduction, molecular functions including structural constituent of muscle, protein binding, and calcium ion binding, and cellular components including Z disc, myosin filament, and M band. These DEGs were also enriched in the adrenergic signaling in cardiomyoctes, dilated cardiomyopathy, and tight junction KEGG pathways. Together, the findings of these bioinformatics analyses thus identified key hub genes associated with DFU development.

Recently, favorable outcomes of primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair have been reported in patients with proximal tears and good tissue quality. If the tear involves the midsubstance of the ACL fibers or Sherman type II or III injury, independent primary repair will cause a higher failure rate at long-term follow-up. For these cases, we conduct primary repair and apply an internal brace and single-bundle reconstruction as hybrid augmentation. This hybrid repair technique encourages natural healing of the primary ligament by the internal brace and single-bundle graft as a provisional scaffold during the healing phase, as well as early mobilization. We describe our ACL hybrid repair technique, using a video and illustrations.

Abstract Germline polymorphisms are linked with differential survival outcomes in cancers but are not well studied in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Here, a two‐phase association study is conducted to discover germline polymorphisms that are associated with the prognosis of NPC. The discovery phase includes two consecutive hospital cohorts of patients with NPC from Southern China. Exome‐wide genotypes at 246 173 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are determined, followed by survival analysis for each SNP under Cox proportional hazard regression model. Candidate SNP is replicated in another two independent cohorts from Southern China and Singapore. Meta‐analysis of all samples (n = 5553) confirms that the presence of rs1131636‐T, located in the 3′‐UTR of RPA1, confers an inferior overall survival (HR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.20–1.47, P = 6.31 × 10−8). Bioinformatics and biological assays show that rs1131636 has regulatory effects on upstream RPA1. Functional studies further demonstrate that RPA1 promotes the growth, invasion, migration, and radioresistance of NPC cells. Additionally, miR‐1253 is identified as a suppressor for RPA1 expression, likely through regulation of its binding affinity to rs1131636 locus. Collectively, these findings provide a promising biomarker aiding in stratifying patients with poor survival, as well as a potential drug target for NPC.

Uterine fibroid embolization has been proven effective in treating symptomatic uterine fibroids for appropriately selected patients as an alternative option to surgical approaches. The most common adult uterine position is anteverted followed by a retroverted uterus which can be found in roughly 15%-20% of normal adult females. The positioning of the uterus can change from anteversion to retroversion due to the filling of bladder or during pregnancy; however, changing from retroverted to anteverted position without prior pregnancy or endometriosis is rather uncommon. Here, we describe a case of uterine orientation change from retroversion to anteversion presenting 6 months after uterine fibroid embolization. Objective:To evaluate therapeutic effects of different moxibustion temperatures on stroke patients with spastic hemiplegia, in order to provid suitable and objective moxibustion temperature for such patients with abnormal perceptual abnormalities.Methods:A total of 80 patients were randomly divided into thermal burning group and temperature-sensing group, with 40 cases in each group. The thermal burning group received moxibustion at 36.8-43.5℃ and the temperature-sensing group received moxibustion at 32.8-35.8℃, 30 minutes each course, one course a day and five courses a week, continuous treatment for four weeks. A modified MAS scale was used to assess the degree of spasticity; a simplified Fugl-Meyer scale was used to assess motor function; Barthel's number was used to assess the ability of daily living.Results:Comparing the difference at the end of intervention to that before, the degree of upper limb paralysis was improved in both groups with statistically significant difference (PPP>0.05).After four treatments, two groups of motor function, daily life ability were greater than the corresponding minimum clinically important difference, with statistical significance (P

Abstract Background Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene may be correlated with the susceptibility to coronary artery disease (CAD) – although results have been controversial. The aim of this meta–analysis is to clarify the effects of VEGF –2578A/C (rs699947), −1154G/A (rs1570360), +405C/G (rs2010963), and + 936C/T (rs3025039) polymorphisms on CAD risk. Methods Pooled odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to estimate the strength of the association between VEGF gene polymorphisms and CAD risk. Fixed- or random-effects model was used depending on the heterogeneity between studies. Results In total, 13 eligible articles containing 29 studies were analysed. The pooled analysis indicated that the VEGF gene polymorphisms of rs699947, rs2010963, and rs3025039 were associated with an increased risk of CAD, whereas no significant associations were observed with the rs1570360 polymorphism. A subgroup analysis stratified by ethnicity revealed that the rs699947 and rs3025039 polymorphisms were associated with CAD risk in Asian populations. In addition, stratification by control source indicated an increased risk of CAD susceptibility with the rs699947 polymorphism for population–based studies of reduced heterogeneity. Conclusions In summary, we concluded that the VEGF gene polymorphisms rs699947, rs2010963, and rs3025039 are correlated with an elevated CAD risk.

Abstract Background Retrieval of inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) is important to decrease the long-term risk of complications associated with indwelling devices. Our hospital experienced low retrieval rates and implemented a low-cost intervention and evaluation for quality improvement. The working hypothesis was that a simple, mailed letter intervention could increase retrieval rates by increasing patient and primary care provider knowledge of the need for retrieval. Methods For all prospective patients who received a retrievable IVCF during the intervention period from January 1, 2014 to February 29, 2016, patients and their primary care providers were mailed letters encouraging contact with the clinic for evaluation of eligibility for retrieval. The main outcome was retrieval of the IVCF if clinically indicated with a secondary outcome of time-to-retrieval. A pre-intervention control group from October 1, 2011 to December 31, 2013 was used to evaluate the impact of the intervention. Competing risks, time-to-event analysis was used to compare the pre- and post-intervention period retrieval rates correcting for patients who died during follow-up. Results Between the pre- and post-intervention periods, crude retrieval rates increased from 4.4% to 8.1% with a 12-fold change at comparable time points. The time-to-retrieval in the pre-intervention period was a mean (SD) of 503 (207) days with a median (IQR) of 505 (301–742). In the post-intervention period, time-to-retrieval was a mean (SD) of 119 (83) days and with median (IQR) of 128 (38–164) days. Conclusions This low-cost intervention significantly increased retrieval rates in a single clinic. However, retrieval rates remain low and can be further improved. Ongoing interventions, including improved patient follow-up and physician education, are being implemented to further improve retrieval and use of inferior vena cava filters. Implanting clinics should implement quality improvement initiatives to improve patient care and follow-up with IVCFs to ensure retrievals occur once clinically relevant in order to minimize long-term complications.

Angiography and endovascular embolization play an important role in controlling acute arterial upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage, particularly when endoscopic intervention fails to do so. In our case, the patient presented with recurrent life-threatening bleed in spite of multiple prior endoscopic interventions and gastroduodenal artery embolization. Our teaching points focus on the role of angiography in acute upper gastrointestinal bleed and when to conduct empiric embolization, while reviewing the supraduodenal artery as an atypical but important potential culprit for refractory upper gastrointestinal bleed.

Background: The osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMCs) is important for the development of vascular calcification (VC), particularly in diabetes. Exosomes derived from Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs) are effective against cardiovascular diseases, yet their role in VC remains unclear. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) inhibit bone marrow stromal cell osteogenesis by targeting osteogenesis-associated genes. Thus, we investigated the role of exosomes derived from MSCs pretreated with AGEs-BSA in VC and its potential mechanisms.Methods: Primary VSMCs and MSCs were isolated from the aorta and bone marrow of Sprague-Dawley rats, respectively. VSMCs were cultured with AGEs-BSA to induce osteogenic differentiation. Exosomes were harvested from MSCs by ultracentrifugation. MSCs and VSMCs were cocultured in Transwells, and exosomes were added to VSMC culture medium to assess their effects on osteogenic differentiation. Double luciferase reporter assay was applied to confirm that miR-146a directly targets the 3' UTR of the thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) gene.Results: Pretreatment of VSMCs with AGEs-BSA increased the expression of thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) by inhibiting that of miR-146a, resulting in enhanced ROS production and VSMC calcification. By contrast, the expression of miR-146a in MSCs was increased by AGEs-BSA treatment. Thus, miR-146a was transferred from AGEs-BSA-pretreated or miR-146a-transfected MSCs to VSMCs via exosomes. After coculture with miR-146a-containing exosomes, the AGEs-BSA-mediated increase in VSMC calcification was diminished, accompanied by decreased TXNIP expression and ROS production. Furthermore, TXNIP overexpression counteracted the anti-calcification effects of MSC-derived miR-146a-containing exosomes. In addition, TXNIP was identified as a target gene of miR-146a, and the results of double luciferase reporter assay confirmed that TXNIP was the direct target gene of miR-146a.Conclusions: Exosomes secreted by MSCs pretreated with AGEs-BSA contained a high level of miR-146a, which was transferred to VSMCs and inhibited AGEs-BSA-induced calcification in a TXNIP-dependent manner. Thus, miR-146a-containing exosomes may be a potential therapeutic target for VC.

BackgroundRetrieval of vena cava filters (VCFs) is important for safety as complications increase with longer dwell times. This study assessed VCF retrieval rates and factors associated with retrieval in a national cohort. Methods and ResultsVCFs were identified by procedural codes from an administrative claims database. Patients were identified who had a VCF placement during a hospitalization from a national commercial administrative claims database. Indications for VCF placement were identified as pulmonary embolism with or without deep vein thrombosis, deep vein thrombosis only, or prophylactic. Patient demographic and clinical characteristics were included in proportional hazard regression models to find associations with early (90‐day) and 1‐year VCF retrieval. Initiation of anticoagulation and the correlation between time‐to‐retrieval and time‐to‐initiation of anticoagulation were observed. Of 54 766 patients receiving a VCF, 36.9% had pulmonary embolism, 43.9% had deep vein thrombosis only, and 19.2% had no apparent venous thromboembolism present. Over the 1 year of follow‐up, the cumulative incidence of VCF retrieval was 18.4%. Retrieval increased over time from a low of 14.0% in 2010 up to ≈24% in 2014. In adjusted time‐to‐event models, increasing age, differing regions, and some comorbidities were associated with poorer retrieval rates. Initiation of anticoagulation was poorly correlated with retrieval, with anticoagulation preceding retrieval by a median of 51 days while those without retrieval had a median of 278 days of exposure to anticoagulation. ConclusionsVCF retrieval increased over the study period but remained suboptimal and was weakly correlated with anticoagulation initiation.

Relative contributions from environmental factors to daily actual evapotranspiration (ET _a ) across a variety of climate zones is a widely open research question, especially regarding the roles played by soil water content ((SWC); water supply) and net radiation ((Rn); energy supply) in controlling ET _a . Here, the boosted regression tree method scheme was employed to quantify environmental controls on daily ET _a using the global FLUXNET dataset. Similar to the general trend suggested by the Budyko theory at annual scales, the results showed that the relative control of SWC on daily ET _a increased with increasing aridity index (Φ); however, Rn played a major role at most FLUXNET sites (roughly Φ < 4), indicating that Rn could be a leading control on daily ET _a even at water-limited sites. The variability in the relative controls of SWC and Rn also partly depended on factors affecting water availability for daily ET _a (e.g. vegetation characteristics and groundwater depth). Our study showed that other than SWC and Rn, the net effect of environmental controls (particularly leaf area index) on daily ET _a was more important at drier sites than at relatively humid sites. This suggests that near-surface hydrological processes are more sensitive to vegetation variations due to their ability to extract deep soil water and enhance ET _a , especially under arid and semi-arid climatic conditions. Our findings illustrate how environmental controls on daily ET _a change as the climate dries, which has important implications for many scientific disciplines including hydrological, climatic, and agricultural studies.

Human leukocyte antigen G (HLA-G) has multiple immune regulatory functions including the induction of immune tolerance in malignancies. The roles of HLA-G have not been investigated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This study is aimed to evaluate the role of HLA-G as prognostic factor for NPC patients as well as its role in the immune regulation. Western assays showed high HLA-G expression in NPC cell lines, but low in the immortalized nasopharyngeal epithelial cell line NP69. HLA-G protein was further detected in 79.2% of 552 NPC specimens with immunohistochemistry (IHC), but not in normal nasopharyngeal epithelium tissue. Moreover, high expression of HLA-G predicted poor survival of NPC patients and positively correlated with tumor N classification and recurrence or metastasis. Multivariate analysis indicated that HLA-G was an independent and unfavorable prognostic factor. Furthermore, the presence of CD68+macrophages and IL-10 were also examined, which are two prognostic markers of NPC and important factors for regulating immune surveillance. The correlations of HLA-G with these two immune factors were revealed in NPC tissues. Taken together, our results suggest that HLA-G is an independent biomarker for NPC prognosis, and HLA-G might contribute to NPC progression, which might jointly regulate immune surveillance in NPC together with macrophages and IL-10.

Genetic variations that influence DNA repair efficiency may contribute to coronary artery disease (CAD) susceptibility. Previous studies have investigated whether there was evidence of an association between polymorphisms at the X-ray repair cross complementing 1 (XRCC1) gene and susceptibility to CAD, but findings have been inconclusive. We identified eligible studies through a comprehensive literature search to determine whether an association exists between XRCC1 gene polymorphisms and CAD susceptibility. Findings were assessed using the odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI), which were calculated using a fixed- or random-effects model, based on the heterogeneity of the studies. Ten eligible studies were finally included in this meta-analysis. Our pooled analysis found that XRCC1 polymorphisms were significantly associated with CAD susceptibility under recessive (Arg194Trp: OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.13-1.93; Arg399Gln: OR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.12-1.89), homozygous (Arg194Trp: OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.03-1.81; Arg399Gln: OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.19-2.05), and allele (Arg399Gln: OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.06-1.32) genetic models. Following subgroup analysis by ethnicity, in Asian populations, we found evidence of associations between the XRCC1 Arg194Trp polymorphism and CAD under recessive and homozygous genetic models, and between the XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism and CAD under recessive, homozygous, and allele genetic models. Subgroup analysis stratified by control source revealed associations between the Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln polymorphisms and susceptibility to CAD under recessive and homozygous modes of inheritance, respectively. In addition, subgroup analysis stratified by sample size found that findings of the Arg194Trp polymorphism in large sample sizes were comparable to those found using pooled eligible studies. Based on our meta-analysis, we concluded that the XRCC1 gene polymorphisms, Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln, are associated with CAD susceptibility, specifically in Asian populations. However, additional, comprehensive and well-designed studies are warranted to confirm these findings.
