The “job talk” is a standard element of faculty recruiting. How audiences treat candidates for faculty positions during job talks could have disparate impact on protected groups, including women. We annotated 156 job talks from five engineering and science departments for 13 categories of questions and comments. All departments were ranked in the top 10 by US News & World Report. We find that differences in the number, nature, and total duration of audience questions and comments are neither material nor statistically significant. For instance, the median difference (by gender) in the duration of questioning ranges from zero to less than two minutes in the five departments. Moreover, in some departments, candidates who were interrupted more often were more likely to be offered a position, challenging the premise that interruptions are necessarily prejudicial. These results are specific to the departments and years covered by the data, but they are broadly consistent with previous research, which found differences comparable in magnitude. However, those studies concluded that the (small) differences were statistically significant. We present evidence that the nominal statistical significance is an artifact of using inappropriate hypothesis tests. We show that it is possible to calibrate those tests to obtain a proper P -value using randomization.

BackgroundThe development of internet technology has greatly increased the ability of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to obtain health information, giving patients more initiative in the patient-physician decision-making process. However, concerns about the quality of website health information will affect the enthusiasm of patients’ website search behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the current situation of Chinese internet information on COPD. ObjectiveThis study aims to evaluate the quality of COPD treatment information on the Chinese internet. MethodsUsing the standard disease name “慢性阻塞性肺疾病” (“chronic obstructive pulmonary disease” in Chinese) and the commonly used public search terms “慢阻肺” (“COPD”) and “肺气肿” (“emphysema”) combined with the keyword “治疗” (“treatment”), we searched the PC client web page of Baidu, Sogou, and 360 search engines and screened the first 50 links of the website from July to August 2021. The language was restricted to Chinese for all the websites. The DISCERN tool was used to evaluate the websites. ResultsA total of 96 websites were included and analyzed. The mean overall DISCERN score for all websites was 30.4 (SD 10.3; range 17.3-58.7; low quality), no website reached the maximum DISCERN score of 75, and the mean score for each item was 2.0 (SD 0.7; range 1.2-3.9). There were significant differences in mean DISCERN scores between terms, with “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease” having the highest mean score. ConclusionsThe quality of COPD information on the Chinese internet is poor, which is mainly reflected in the low reliability and relevance of COPD treatment information, which can easily lead consumers to make inappropriate treatment choices. The term “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease” has the highest DISCERN score among commonly used disease search terms. It is recommended that consumers use standard disease names when searching for website information, as the information obtained is relatively reliable.

Based on disappointing results of stem cell-based application in clinical trials for patients with critical limb ischemia, we hypothesized that the acidic environment might be the key factor limiting cell survival and function. In the present study, we used microdialysis to determine presence of acidosis and metabolic imbalance in critical ischemia. Moreover, we explored the effect of extracellular acidosis on adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) at molecular and transcriptional level. Our data demonstrate that low pH negatively regulates cell proliferation and survival, also, it results in cell cycle arrest, mitochondrial dynamics disorder, DNA damage as well as the impairment of proangiogenic function in a pH-dependent manner. Further transcriptome profiling identified the pivotal signaling pathways and hub genes in response to acidosis. Collectively, these findings provide strong evidences for a critical role of acidosis in ADSCs impairment with ischemic condition and suggest treatments focus on tissue pH balance and acidosis-mediated hub genes may have therapeutic potential in stem cell-based application.

Abstract Monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), an emergent two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, holds great promise for transcending the fundamental limits of silicon electronics and continue the downscaling of field-effect transistors. To realize its full potential and high-end applications, controlled synthesis of wafer-scale monolayer MoS2 single crystals on general commercial substrates is highly desired yet challenging. Here, we demonstrate the successful epitaxial growth of 2-inch single-crystal MoS2 monolayers on industry-compatible substrates of c-plane sapphire by engineering the formation of a specific interfacial reconstructed layer through the S/MoO3 precursor ratio control. The unidirectional alignment and seamless stitching of MoS2 domains across the entire wafer are demonstrated through cross-dimensional characterizations ranging from atomic- to centimeter-scale. The epitaxial monolayer MoS2 single crystal shows good wafer-scale uniformity and state-of-the-art quality, as evidenced from the ~100% phonon circular dichroism, exciton valley polarization of ~70%, room-temperature mobility of ~140 cm2v−1s−1, and on/off ratio of ~109. Our work provides a simple strategy to produce wafer-scale single-crystal 2D semiconductors on commercial insulator substrates, paving the way towards the further extension of Moore’s law and industrial applications of 2D electronic circuits.

Orexins are a family of neuropeptides secreted by neurons in the lateral hypothalamus (LH). These peptides act widespreadly across the body by interacting with specific orexin receptors on target cells, which comprise the orexinergic system. Emerging evidence has revealed that the orexinergic system is tightly associated with neuropsychiatric disorders; however, the underlying mechanisms require further exploration. Neuropsychiatric disorders have also been associated with neuroplasticity, while orexins have been shown to play regulatory roles in neuronal plasticity. As such, this review aims to summarize the recent progress of research investigating the roles of the orexinergic system in neuronal plasticity and associated neuropsychiatric disorders, including addiction, depression, and schizophrenia, which may provide novel insights into the mechanism of the orexinergic system in the pathogenesis of these neuropsychiatric disorders.

Perilla frutescens L. essential oil (PLEO) has antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which can effectively maintain the quality of fruits and extend their shelf life. In this study, sodium alginate and chitosan were used as wall materials, and PLEO microcapsule powder was used as the core materials to prepare PLEO hydrogel beads. The best results were obtained by using 2%w/v sodium alginate and 1.5%w/v chitosan as wall materials, with a core-to-wall ratio of 2:1 and homogenized for 15 min producing PLEO hydrogel beads with encapsulation efficiency of 82.61 %. For strawberries preservation, PLEO hydrogel beads preservation group had a better effect after 5 d of storage, showing a lower decay rate (15.71 %), better maintaining the hardness of 1.75 kg/cm2, and a weight loss of 3.29 %. Furthermore, organic acids and total phenols were retained more in this group, the number of microorganisms was significantly reduced, and sensory qualities were improved, especially taste and color. This study provides important insights into the application of natural preservatives in the food industry and promotes sustainable practices in food preservation.

Abstract Hepatocarcinogenesis is a multi-step process. However, the regulators of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) initiation are understudied. Adult liver-specific gene expression was globally downregulated in HCC. We hypothesize that adult liver-specific genes, especially adult liver-enriched transcription factors may exert tumor-suppressive functions in HCC. In this study, we identify ZBTB7B, an adult liver-enriched transcription factor as a permissive regulator of HCC initiation. ZBTB7B is highly expressed in hepatocytes in adult livers, compared to fetal livers. To evaluate the functions of ZBTB7B in hepatocarcinogenesis, we performed hepatocyte-specific ZBTB7B knockout in hydrodynamic oncogene transfer-induced mouse liver cancer models. Hepatocyte-specific knockout of ZBTB7B promotes activated Akt and N-Ras-induced HCC development. Moreover, ZBTB7B deficiency sensitizes hepatocytes to a single oncogene Akt-induced oncogenic transformation and HCC initiation, which is otherwise incompetent in inducing HCC. ZBTB7B deficiency accelerates HCC initiation by down-regulating adult liver-specific gene expression and priming livers to a fetal-like state. The molecular mechanism underlying ZBTB7B functions in hepatocytes was investigated by integrated transcriptomic, phosphoproteomic, and chromatin immunoprecipitation-sequencing analyses. Integrative multi-omics analyses identify c-Jun as the core signaling node in ZBTB7B-deficient liver cancer initiation. c-Jun is a direct target of ZBTB7B essential to accelerated liver cancer initiation in ZBTB7B-deficient livers. Knockdown of c-Jun expression or dominant negative c-Jun expression delays HCC development in ZBTB7B-deficient livers. In addition, ZBTB7B competes with c-Jun for chromatin binding. Ectopic ZBTB7B expression attenuates the tumor-promoting functions of c-Jun. Expression of ZBTB7B signature, composed of 140 genes co-regulated by ZBTB7B and c-Jun, is significantly downregulated in early-stage HCCs compared to adjacent normal tissues, correlates to liver-specific gene expression, and is associated with good prognosis in human HCC. Thus, ZBTB7B functions as a permissive regulator of HCC initiation by directly regulating c-Jun expression and function.

Abstract Background The successful launch of icaritin, a therapeutic drug for liver cancer derived from Epimedium brevicornu, has provided new impetus for the development of prenylated flavonoids in the field of oncology. Flemingia macrophylla is reported to contain characteristic prenylated flavonoids which can regulate the p53 protein. We aimed to isolate these constituents and conduct activity evaluation, structure–activity relationship, and mechanism studies to provide candidate compounds for antitumor drug development. Methods In this study, chromatographic techniques combined with spectroscopic methods were used to separate, purify, and identify the constituents of Flemingia macrophylla methanol extract. The cytotoxic activity of the constituents was evaluated using an MTT assay with A549 and H1975 cells as the model. The binding mechanism between the compounds and the p53 protein was investigated with molecular docking and validated with cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA). Western blotting (WB) was employed to detect the expression of p53 protein and apoptosis-related proteins in cells. Results Chiral HPLC separation of racemates 1 and 7 provided two pairs of undescribed enantiomers (1a/1b and 7a/7b), along with eight known compounds (2 − 9) isolated from Flemingia macrophylla roots. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute configurations of the enantiomers were determined from experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism data. Compounds 1 − 7, and the non-prenyl analogues 10 − 13, were evaluated for cytotoxic activity against the human lung cancer A549 and H1975 cell line. Study region: The Xiying River Basin is a typical inland mountainous watershed located in the Qilian Mountains. Study focus: This article reveals the change of runoff stable isotopes and their control mechanisms based on isotope data of different water bodies (precipitation, runoff, groundwater, and glacial snowmelt) in the Xiying River Basin from 2016 to 2021, combined with relevant meteorological observation data and the Normalized Vegetation Index (NDVI). New hydrological insights for the region: The results show that (1) meteorological factors control runoff isotope variations through controlling the evaporation process of runoff and the isotopic characteristics of recharge sources. (2) In areas with low vegetation cover, surface landscape features influence runoff isotopic composition by altering the isotopic characteristics of recharge sources. (3) In areas with high vegetation cover, surface vegetation cover affects runoff stable isotopes by controlling evapotranspiration processes. This study connects vegetation cover and runoff isotopes to explain the surface landscape control of runoff stable isotopes. It offers a more powerful reference for elucidating the factors influencing runoff isotopes in inland mountain watersheds.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Given that plasmid-mediated horizontal gene transfer plays a critical role in disseminating ARGs in the environment, it is important to inspect the transfer potential of transmissible plasmids to have a better understanding of whether these mobile ARGs can be hosted by opportunistic pathogens and should be included in One Health’s considerations. In this study, we used a fluorescent-reporter-gene based exogenous isolation approach to capture extended-spectrum beta-lactamases encoding mobile determinants from sewer microbiome samples that enter an urban water system (UWS) in Denmark. After screening and sequencing, we isolated a ∼73 Kbp IncN plasmid (pDK_DARWIN) that harboured and expressed multiple ARGs. Using a dual fluorescent reporter gene system, we showed that this plasmid can transfer into resident urban water communities. We demonstrated the transfer of pDK_DARWIN to microbiome members of both the sewer (in the upstream UWS compartment) and wastewater treatment (in the downstream UWS compartment) microbiomes. Sequence similarity search across curated plasmid repositories revealed that pDK_DARWIN derives from an IncN backbone harboured by environmental and nosocomial Enterobacterial isolates. Furthermore, we searched for pDK_DARWIN sequence matches in UWS metagenomes from three countries, revealing that this plasmid can be detected in all of them, with a higher relative abundance in hospital sewers compared to residential sewers. Overall, this study demonstrates that this IncN plasmid is prevalent across Europe and an efficient vector capable of disseminating multiple ARGs in the urban water systems.

Single-cell or low-input multi-omics techniques have revolutionized the study of pre-implantation embryo development. However, the single-cell or low-input proteomic research in this field is relatively underdeveloped because of the higher threshold of the starting material for mammalian embryo samples and the lack of hypersensitive proteome technology. In this study, a comprehensive solution of ultrasensitive proteome technology (CS-UPT) was developed for single-cell or low-input mouse oocyte/embryo samples. The deep coverage and high-throughput routes significantly reduced the starting material and were selected by investigators based on their demands. Using the deep coverage route, we provided the first large-scale snapshot of the very early stage of mouse maternal-to-zygotic transition, including almost 5,500 protein groups from 20 mouse oocytes or zygotes for each sample. Moreover, significant protein regulatory networks centered on transcription factors and kinases between the MII oocyte and 1-cell embryo provided rich insights into minor zygotic genome activation.

Thin polysilicon (poly-Si)-based passivating contacts can reduce parasitic absorption and the cost of n-TOPCon solar cells. Herein, n+-poly-Si layers with thicknesses of 30~100 nm were fabricated by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) to create passivating contacts. We investigated the effect of n+-poly-Si layer thickness on the microstructure of the metallization contact formation, passivation, and electronic performance of n-TOPCon solar cells. The thickness of the poly-Si layer significantly affected the passivation of metallization-induced recombination under the metal contact (J0,metal) and the contact resistivity (ρc) of the cells. However, it had a minimal impact on the short-circuit current density (Jsc), which was primarily associated with corroded silver (Ag) at depths of the n+-poly-Si layer exceeding 40 nm. We introduced a thin n+-poly-Si layer with a thickness of 70 nm and a surface concentration of 5 × 1020 atoms/cm3. This layer can meet the requirements for low J0,metal and ρc values, leading to an increase in conversion efficiency of 25.65%. This optimized process of depositing a phosphorus-doped poly-Si layer can be commercially applied in photovoltaics to reduce processing times and lower costs.

Oil spill cleanup in water remains a critical challenge due to the harmful secondary pollution from conventional methods such as burning or chemical degradation. Herein, we present a facile method to fabricate a superhydrophobic and superoleophilic polyurethane (PU) foil for efficient and environmentally friendly oil/water separation. More specifically, micropillar arrays were embedded onto the foil surface through a nanoimprinting process. Microporous structures were generated at the foil cross-section by a supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) saturation method. The dimensions of pillar and pore structures were optimized with the aim of boosting selective wetting (i.e., water repellency and oil attraction) properties. As a result, the developed PU foil shows an oil absorption efficiency nearly 4 times higher than a pristine reference. Moreover, the structured PU foil stably retains the absorbed oil for over a week, demonstrating an absorption capacity of nearly 400%, which is also much superior than the unstructured sample. Our concept of combining both topographical micropillars and cross-sectional micropores onto PU foil provides a novel approach for achieving efficient and environmental friendly oil/water separation.

Abstract Monolayer molybdenum disulfide (ML-MoS2) is an emergent two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor holding potential for flexible integrated circuits (ICs). The most important demands for the application of such ML-MoS2 ICs are low power consumption and high performance. However, these are currently challenging to satisfy due to limitations in the material quality and device fabrication technology. In this work, we develop an ultra-thin high-κ dielectric/metal gate fabrication technique for the realization of thin film transistors based on high-quality wafer scale ML-MoS2 on both rigid and flexible substrates. The rigid devices can be operated in the deep-subthreshold regime with low power consumption and show negligible hysteresis, sharp subthreshold slope, high current density, and ultra-low leakage currents. Moreover, we realize fully functional large-scale flexible ICs operating at voltages below 1 V. Our process could represent a key step towards using energy-efficient flexible ML-MoS2 ICs in portable, wearable, and implantable electronics.

IntroductionThe etiology and pathophysiology of major depressive disorders (MDDs) remain unclear. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that essential trace elements (ETEs), such as iodine (I), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), cobalt (Co), and molybdenum (Mo), play vital roles in MDDs.MethodsIn total, 72 patients with MDD and 75 healthy controls (HCs) in the Zhumadian Second People's Hospital, Henan Province, China were recruited in our study. The levels of different ETEs were examined in both serum and urine, using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), for both the MDD patients and HCs.ResultsThe serum levels of I, Se, Cu, and Mo were significantly lower in the MDD patients compared to the HCs (p < 0.05), and the urinary levels of I and Zn were significantly higher in the MDD patients compared to the HCs (p < 0.05). The serum concentration of I (Q3: OR = 0.210, Q4: OR = 0.272) was negatively associated with MDD after adjusting for potential confounders, including age, gender, and BMI, and the urinary concentration of I (Q4: OR = 2.952) was positively associated.ConclusionsThe higher levels of I, Se, Cu, and Mo in serum might be protective against the development of MDD, and the excess I and Zn in urine may be associated with MDD pathogenesis. Future research needs to gain a deeper understanding of the metabolic pathways of ETEs, especially I, Se, Zn, Cu, and Mo, in MDD, and their role in the pathogenesis of depression.

Tetracentron sinense Oliv. is an endangered relict tree found in south-central China. A low number of seedlings among the natural populations has resulted in the poor regeneration of this species. However, the mechanisms underlying seedling survival and growth remain poorly understood. Leaf functional traits (LFT) likely characterize the growth and development of T. sinense in different ecological environments, playing a crucial role in its adaptive strategies to adversity. In this study, two-factor orthogonal control experiments with two levels of light intensity (L1: 50 % natural light intensity in forest edge; L2: 10 % natural light intensity in understory) and soil moisture content (W1: 30 % moisture content in valley; W2: 15 % moisture content in mountainside) were conducted to analyze the response of the LFT of 7-month-old T. sinense seedlings to different light and soil moisture conditions. With the light intensity decreased, superoxide dismutase activity decreased, and peroxidase activity increased. With a decrease in soil moisture, the contents of chlorophyll (Chl) a, Chl b, Chl t, and soluble sugar increased, and Chl a/b decreased. A decrease in light and soil moisture decreased leaf thickness, leaf dry weight, leaf dry matter content, leaf volume, chloroplast volume, and starch grains, but increased osmophilic grains, the total nitrogen, and phosphorus contents. Moreover, the chloroplast morphology of L2W2 was more complete than that of other treatments. The results showed that the LFT of T. sinense seedlings acted synergistically to adapt to different light and soil moisture conditions, low soil moisture alleviated the effects of shading in T. sinense seedlings, and T. sinense seedlings adopted the “quick investment-return strategy” adaptation strategy under L2W2. Finally, the soil moisture of the mountainside in the natural habitat was favorable to the survival and growth of T. sinense seedlings.

In arid oasis regions, water resources are severely scarce, with agricultural water usage far exceeding that of more humid areas. As a result, assessing non-productive water losses in farmland becomes crucial for estimating the water requirements reliant on irrigation for oasis cultivation. From April 2018 to October 2021, we established an observation system in the Minqin Oasis farmland. By utilizing hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation, soil water, and maize stem xylem water, we quantified the non-productive water loss (FE) and soil water infiltration rate (fe) in maize fields. Our findings indicate: (1) The average non-productive losses from rainfall and irrigation in arid maize fields were 39 %, with peak losses reaching 58 %; (2) Non-productive losses due to evapotranspiration were mainly observed in June and July, while losses from infiltration predominantly occurred in April-May and August-September; (3) Crop evapotranspiration capacity emerged as a significant factor influencing evaporation losses, while individual irrigation amounts and rainfall determined soil infiltration losses. We believe that judiciously managing irrigation volume and adjusting irrigation strategies in arid farmlands could unlock substantial potential for conserving water resources.

Abstract To date, MoS2 can only be achieved at microscale. Edge pinning effect caused by structure defects is the most obvious barrier to expand the size of structural superlubricity to macroscale. Herein, we plan to pin edge planes of MoS2 with nanospheres, and then the incommensurate structure can be formed between adjacent rolling nanoparticles to reduce friction. The sputtered MoS2 film was prepared by the physical vapor deposition (PVD) in advance. Then enough Cu2O nanospheres (∼40 nm) were generated in situ at the edge plane of MoS2 layers by liquid phase synthesis. An incommensurate structure (mismatch angle (θ) = 8°) caused by MoS2 layers was formed before friction. The friction coefficient of the films (5 N, 1,000 r/min) was ∼6.0×10−3 at the most. During friction, MoS2 layers pinned on numerous of Cu2O nanoparticles reduced its edge pinning effect and decreased friction. Moreover, much more incommensurate was formed, developing macro-superlubricity.

Selective emitter (SE) technology significantly influences the passivation and contact properties of n-TOPCon solar cells. In this study, three mask layers (SiOx, SiNx, and SiOxNy) were employed to fabricate n-TOPCon solar cells with phosphorus (P)-SE structures on the rear side using a three-step method. Additionally, phosphosilicon glass (PSG) was used to prepare n-TOPCon solar cells with P-SE structure on the rear side using four-step method, and the comparative analysis of electrical properties were studied. The SiOx mask with a laser power of 20 W (O2 group) achieved the highest solar cell efficiency (Eff, 24.85%), The open-circuit voltage (Voc) is 2.4 mV higher than that of the H1 group, and the fill factor (FF) is 1.88% higher than that of the L1 group. Furthermore, the final Eff of solar cell is 0.17% higher than that of the L1 group and 0.20% higher than that of the H1 group. In contrast, using the four-step method and a laser power of 20 W (P2 group), a maximum Eff of 24.82% was achieved. Moreover, it exhibited an Voc, which is elevated by 3.2 mV compared to the H1 group, and FF increased by 1.49% compared to the L1 group. Furthermore, the overall Eff of the P2 group outperforms both the L1 and H1 groups by approximately 0.14% and 0.17%, respectively. In the four-step groups, the Eff of each laser condition group was improved compared with the L1 group and H1 group, The stability observed within the four-step method surpassed that of the three-step groups. However, in terms of full-scale electrical properties, the three-step method can achieve comparable results as those obtained from the four-step method. This research holds significant guiding implications for upgrading the n-TOPCon solar cell rear-side technology during mass production.

Rhynchanthus beesianus is a medicine food homology plant, and its rhizome is a food spice and traditional Chinese medicine used to treat inflammation-related disorders. Still, little research has been done on its phytochemicals and biological activities. Therefore, this study firstly reported the phytochemical analysis by UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS, antioxidant, anti-enzymatic, and anti-inflammatory effects of R. beesianus rhizome water extract (WE) and 70% ethanol extract (EE). For phytochemical analysis, WE and EE had high total phenolic (25.57–28.19 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoid (10.57–28.08 mg RE/g extract) contents, and further UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS test identified sixty-one compounds, including twelve phenolic compounds and six flavonoids. In the antioxidant assay, WE and EE showed significant DPPH (IC50: 83.93 ± 5.90 and 69.48 ± 1.57 μg/mL, respectively) and ABTS (IC50: 73.46 ± 0.69 and 40.72 ± 0.67 μg/mL, respectively) radical scavenging ability, especially the efficacy of EE was superior or equivalent to that of positive control BHT. Moreover, the WE and EE exhibited poor inhibition on acetylcholinesterase (IC50: 3.31 ± 0.16 and 3.53 ± 0.14 mg/mL, respectively), butyrylcholinesterase (IC50: 1.29 ± 0.02 and 0.75 ± 0.08 mg/mL, respectively), and tyrosinase (IC50: 5.91 ± 0.63 and 21.30 ± 1.52 mg/mL, respectively). Interestingly, EE showed remarkable inhibition on NO, PGE2, IL-6, and TNF-α produced by LPS stimulation without cytotoxicity. It reduced ROS generation and down-regulated mRNA and protein levels of iNOS and COX-2 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. Besides, EE decreased LPS-stimulated MAPKs (ERK, p38, and JNK) phosphorylation and inhibited NF-κB p65 nuclear translocation by suppressing the phosphorylation and degradation of IκBα. Therefore, R. beesianus can be used as a promising natural antioxidant, enzyme inhibitor, and anti-inflammatory agent with great exploitation potential in functional food and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract Background Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has been used as a potential biomarker of inflammation-related diseases, but its role in the peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis (PDRP) is still uncertain. This study was aimed to investigate the association between PLR and the new-onset PDRP in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Methods In this multicenter retrospective study, 1378 PD Chinese PD patients were recruited from four centers, who were divided into the high PLR group (HPG) and the low PLR group (LPG) according to the cutoff value of PLR. The correlation between PLR and the new-onset PDRP was assessed using the Cox regression model analysis. Results During follow-up, 121 new-onset PDRP events were recorded. Objectives The global mortality rate from chronic kidney disease (CKD) has increased over the past two decades. Typically, peritoneal dialysis (PD) remains a useful alternative treatment for end-stage renal disease. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main complication in PD patients. In terms of prognosis, it is reported that platelet distribution width (PDW) can predict adverse CVD events. However, the relationship between PDW and new-onset CVD in PD patients is not clear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between PDW and new-onset CVD in PD patients.Methods This was a retrospective cohort study, from 4 July 2005 to 31 December 2019, and a total of 1557 patients were recruited. PDW was respectively categorized into two groups: PDW ≤13.2 fL and PDW >13.2 fL. The primary outcome was a new-onset CVD event. Cox proportional hazards models were performed to assess the hazard ratio (HR). Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to evaluate the predictive accuracy of the PDW on CVD events.Results During follow-up, 114 new-onset CVD events were recorded. Cox proportional hazards models showed a higher risk of CVD events in patients with high PDW (HR = 1.862 95%CI 1.205–2.877, p = 0.005). Kaplan–Meier cumulative incidence curves showed the risk of the first occurrence of CVD events was greater in the high PDW group (p = 0.006).Conclusions High PDW is associated with new-onset cardiovascular disease events in PD patients.

BackgroundPlenty of publications had been written in the last several decades on acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in women. However, there are few bibliometric analyses in such field. In order to solve this problem, we attempted to examine the knowledge structure and development of research about AMI in women based on analysis of related publications.MethodThe Web of Science Core Collection was used to extract all publications regarding AMI in women, ranging from January 2000 to August 2022. Bibliometric analysis was performed using VOSviewer, Cite Space, and an online bibliometric analysis platform.ResultsA total of 14,853 publications related to AMI in women were identified from 2000 to 2022. Over the past 20 years, the United States had published the most articles in international research and participated in international cooperation the most frequently. The primary research institutions were Harvard University and University of Toronto. Circulation was the most cited journal and had an incontrovertible academic impact. 67,848 authors were identified, among which Harlan M Krumholz had the most significant number of articles and Thygesen K was co-cited most often. And the most common keywords included risk factors, disease, prognosis, mortality, criteria and algorithm.ConclusionThe research hotspots and trends of AMI in women were identified and explored using bibliometric and visual methods. Researches about AMI in women are flourishing. Criteria and algorithms might be the focus of research in the near future, which deserved great attentions.

The homeotic gene Antennapedia (Antp) has been identified as playing a pivotal role in the morphogenesis of the thorax and wings across various insect species. Leveraging insights from previous studies, the functional characterization of Antp in S. frugiperda was undertaken using RT-qPCR and the CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing system. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that Antp shares a high degree of sequence homology among Lepidoptera species. The expression profile of SfAntp was detected by RT-qPCR. The results showed that SfAntp was expressed in the whole growth cycle of S. frugiperda, the expression level was the highest in the egg stage, and the expression level was higher from 12 h to 48 h. Tissue-specific expression profiling demonstrated that SfAntp was most abundantly expressed in the thoracic segments and legs. To functionally disrupt SfAntp, two sgRNA sites were designed at the first exon of SfAntp and the gene was knocked out by CRISPR/Cas9 via microinjection. The results showed that the deletion of SfAntp produced a mutant phenotype of thoracic fusion, thoracic leg defect, leg-like protrusions between the head and thoracic segments and pupation deformity. In addition, deletion of SfAntp resulted in high embryo mortality. Through DNA sequencing, it was found that the target site of the SfAntp mutant had different degrees of frameshift mutations, indicating that the mutant phenotype was indeed caused by the knockout of SfAntp.

Abstract The bearing voltage brings premature failure of the motor bearings in the subway traction system, which is related to the stray capacitance of the motor. Therefore, the accurate calculation of stray capacitance parameters is of great significance for predicting bearing voltage. In previous studies, stray capacitances generally were acquired from simplified model of the motor. The effect of stator end‐winding and the bearing labyrinth seal on stray capacitance was usually ignored. In this study, the stray capacitance is analysed and the finite element calculation is carried out, and the improved finite element model of motor is proposed, which includes the end‐winding treatment and the bearing labyrinth seal. Then the feasibility of the improved model is verified by the measurement, and it is found that the accurate modelling of end windings has a great influence on the capacitance, and the bearing seal capacitance cannot be ignored while it is used in the motor. Finally, the influence of labyrinth seal parameters on the bearing voltage ratio of the motor is analysed, and it is concluded that the reduction of the radial gap width or the axial gap width of labyrinth seal can effectively reduce the risk of baring current.

Despite many recent advances, state-of-the-art recommender systems still struggle to achieve good performance with sparse datasets. To address the sparsity issue, transfer learning techniques have been investigated for recommender systems, but they tend to impose strict constraints on the content and structure of the data in the source and target domains. For transfer learning methods to work well, there should normally be homogeneity between source and target domains, or a high degree of overlap between the source and target items. In this paper we propose a novel transfer learning framework for mitigating the effects of sparsity and insufficient data. Our method requires neither homogeneity nor overlap between the source and target domains. We describe and evaluate a shared parameter auto-encoder to jointly learn representations of user/item aspects in two domains, applying Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD) loss during training to ensure that the source and target representations are similar in the distribution space. The approach is evaluated using a number of benchmark datasets to demonstrate improved recommendation performance when learned representations are used in collaborative filtering. Abstract Background Melatonin 2-hydroxylase (M2H) is the first enzyme in the catabolism pathway of melatonin, which catalyzes the production of 2-hydroxymelatonin (2-OHM) from melatonin. The content of 2-hydroxymelatonin in plants is much higher than that of melatonin. So M2H may be a key enzyme in the metabolic pathway of melatonin. Method We conducted a systematic analysis of the M2H gene family in Gossypium hirsutum based on the whole genome sequence by integrating the structural characteristics, phylogenetic relationships, expression profile, and biological stress of the members of the Gossypium hirsutum M2H gene family. Result We identified 265 M2H genes in the whole genome of Gossypium hirsutum, which were divided into 7 clades (clades I-VII) according to phylogenetic analysis. Most M2H members in each group had similar motif composition and gene structure characteristics. More than half of GhM2H members contain ABA-responsive elements and MeJA-responsive elements. Under different stress conditions, the expression levels of the gene changed, indicating that GhM2H members were involved in the regulation of abiotic stress. Some genes in the GhM2H family were involved in regulating melatonin levels in cotton under salt stress, and some genes were regulated by exogenous melatonin. Conclusion This study is helpful to explore the function of GhM2H, the downstream metabolism gene of melatonin in cotton, and lay the foundation for better exploring the molecular mechanism of melatonin improving cotton's response to abiotic stress.

A series of Zn-Bi/MCM-41 catalysts were efficiently synthesized for the hydration of acetylene to acetaldehyde. The catalytic performance was examined in a fixed-bed reactor at 240 °C, GHSV(C2H2) = 90 h−1, and n(H2O)/n(C2H2) = 4. It was demonstrated that Zn-4Bi/MCM-41 showed the better catalytic activity with 90% of acetylene conversion and 85% of selectivity to acetaldehyde. The addition of BiCl3 inhibited the loss of zinc species in the reaction, reduced the generation of carbon deposition, and enhanced the dispersion of zinc species. This work could provide new ideas for the development of highly stable catalytic systems for acetylene hydration to acetaldehyde.

2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are considered promising building blocks for emergent electronic and optoelectronic devices. As one of the representatives of 2D semiconductors, monolayer MoSe2 has excellent electrical and optical properties and has attracted a lot of research interest recently. To realize various device applications, large‐scale synthesis of monolayer MoSe2 with high crystal quality is critical, yet remains challenging. Herein, the growth of monolayer MoSe2 at a 4 inch wafer‐scale by chemical vapor deposition is demonstrated. Based on a multisource design and vertical placement of substrates, wafer‐scale continuity and uniformity of layer thickness, e.g., the monolayer, are achieved. This growth technique is also applicable to the wafer‐scale growth of other 2D semiconductors such as WS2 and MoS2.

Abstract Background The abiotic stress such as soil salinization and heavy metal toxicity has posed a major threat to sustainable crop production worldwide. Previous studies revealed that halophytes were supposed to tolerate other stress including heavy metal toxicity. Though HMAD (heavy-metal-associated domain) was reported to play various important functions in Arabidopsis, little is known in Gossypium. Results A total of 169 G. hirsutum genes were identified belonging to the HMAD gene family with the number of amino acids ranged from 56 to 1011. Additionally, 84, 76 and 159 HMAD genes were identified in each G. arboreum, G. raimondii and G. barbadense, respectively. The phylogenetic tree analysis showed that the HMAD gene family were divided into five classes, and 87 orthologs of HMAD genes were identified in four Gossypium species, such as genes Gh_D08G1950 and Gh_A08G2387 of G. hirsutum are orthologs of the Gorai.004G210800.1 and Cotton_A_25987 gene in G. raimondii and G. arboreum, respectively. In addition, 15 genes were lost during evolution. Furthermore, conserved sequence analysis found the conserved catalytic center containing an anion binding (CXXC) box. The HMAD gene family showed a differential expression levels among different tissues and developmental stages in G. hirsutum with the different cis-elements for abiotic stress. Conclusions Current study provided important information about HMAD family genes under salt-stress in Gossypium genome, which would be useful to understand its putative functions in different species of cotton.

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death. Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for the majority of lung cancer diagnoses. Dihydrotanshinone (DHT) is a compound extract from Salvia miltiorrhiza, which has favorable anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. However, the role of DHT in NSCLC has not been fully studied. The anti-cancer drugs used for treating lung cancer often lead to apoptosis; however, the drug resistance of apoptosis restricts the effect of these drugs. Oncosis is a passive form of cell death that is different from apoptosis. It is characterized by cell swelling, and Porimin is a specific marker for oncosis. In this study, the role of DHT in mediating oncosis in A549 cells was investigated. In vitro, the MTS assay was used to detect cell activity after DHT treatment. Microscopy and electron microscopy were used to observe cell morphology changes. Western blotting was used to detect protein expression. Flow cytometry was used to detect intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, calcium ion (Ca2+) level, and cell mortality. The intracellular Lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) level was detected by an LDH detection kit after DHT treatment. The ATP level was detected using an ATP detection kit. In vivo, Lewis lung cancer (LLC) xenograft mice were used to evaluate the anti-tumor effect of DHT. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining was used to detect the pathology of lung cancer tumors. The detection of Porimin in the tumor tissues of the mice after DHT administration was assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The results of this study showed that DHT treatment changed the cell morphology; destroyed the mitochondrial structure; increased the expression of Porimin; increased the levels of LDH, ROS, and Ca2+; decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP level; and played an anti-tumor role in vitro by mediating oncosis in A549 cells. The in vivo studies showed that DHT could effectively inhibit tumor growth. The results of protein detection and IHC detection in the tumor tissues showed that the expression of Porimin was increased and that oncosis occurred in the tumor tissues of mice. DHT triggered Porimin-dependent oncosis by ROS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction in NSCLC. The in vivo studies showed that DHT could inhibit tumor growth in LLC xenograft mice by triggering oncosis. This study indicates the potential for DHT to treat NSCLC.

Abstract Salinity is an extensive and adverse environmental stress to crop plants across the globe, and a major abiotic constraint responsible for limited crop production threatening the crop security. Soil salinization is a widespread problem across the globe, threatening the crop production and food security. Salinity impairs plant growth and development via reduction in osmotic potential, cytotoxicity due to excessive uptake of ions such as sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−), and nutritional imbalance. Cotton, being the most cultivated crop on saline-alkaline soils, it is of great importance to elucidate the mechanisms involved in Na2SO4 tolerance which is still lacking in upland cotton. Zhong 9835, a Na2SO4 resistant cultivar was screened for transcriptomic studies through various levels of Na2SO4 treatments, which results into identification of 3329 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in roots, stems and leave at 300 mM Na2SO4 stress till 12 h in compared to control. According to gene functional annotation analysis, genes involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging system including osmotic stress and ion toxicity were significantly up-regulated, especially GST (glutathione transferase). In addition, analysis for sulfur metabolism, results in to identification of two rate limiting enzymes [APR (Gh_D05G1637) and OASTL (Gh_A13G0863)] during synthesis of GSH from SO4 2−. Furthermore, we also observed a crosstalk of the hormones and TFs (transcription factors) enriched in hormone signal transduction pathway. Genes related to IAA exceeds the rest of hormones followed by ubiquitin related genes which are greater than TFs. The analysis of the expression profiles of diverse tissues under Na2SO4 stress and identification of relevant key hub genes in a network crosstalk will provide a strong foundation and valuable clues for genetic improvements of cotton in response to various salt stresses.

A novel fluorine-containing water-repellent agent (OFAE-SA-BA) was designed and synthesized by emulsion copolymerization, which was used to replace the commercial long fluorocarbon chain water-repellent agent. To improve water repellency, the intermediate and monomer containing two short fluoroalkyl chains were successfully synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and FT-IR, respectively. After being treated by the water-repellent agent, the surface chemical composition, molecular weight, thermal stability, surface morphology, wetting behavior, and durability of the modified cotton fabrics were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectrophotometry (XPS), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermal degradation (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and video-based contact angle goniometry, respectively. The cotton fabric demonstrated water contact angle of 154.1°, both the water and oil repellency rating were grade 4. The durability of water repellency of the treated fabrics only decreased slightly after 30 times, which represented very good washing durability. The finishing agent did not affect the whiteness of the fabric.

To improve the efficiency of polycrystalline silicon solar cells, process optimization is a key technology in the photovoltaic industry. Despite the efficiency of this technique to be reproducible, economic, and simple, it presents a major inconvenience to have a heavily doped region near the surface which induces a high minority carrier recombination. To limit this effect, an optimization of diffused phosphorous profiles is required. A “low-high-low” temperature step of the POCl3 diffusion process was developed to improve the efficiency of industrial-type polycrystalline silicon solar cells. The low surface concentration of phosphorus doping of 4.54 × 1020 atoms/cm3 and junction depth of 0.31 μm at a dopant concentration of N = 1017 atoms/cm3 were obtained. The open-circuit voltage and fill factor of solar cells increased up to 1 mV and 0.30%, compared with the online low-temperature diffusion process, respectively. The efficiency of solar cells and the power of PV cells were increased by 0.1% and 1 W, respectively. This POCl3 diffusion process effectively improved the overall efficiency of industrial-type polycrystalline silicon solar cells in this solar field.

Traditional electrical grid as the largest and most complex industry in the world is currently under fundamental development. According to the IEEE Std1547.4, large distribution systems can be clustered into a number of micro-grids (MGs) to facilitate the control and operation infrastructure in future distribution systems. A distribution network with distributed energy resources serving a group of loads, can be operated as a MG, in grid-connected or isolated grid modes. Most recently, the concept of MGs has become an important subject in smart grid area, demanding a systematic method for their optimal planning. The prosperous development of the micro-grid concept implies the definition of an appropriate regulation for its integration on distribution systems. The MG operators are responsible for a reliable energy supply to their consumers. MG formation represents a suitable solution for uninterrupted supplying of critical loads, in the absence of network.In this study, a systematic approach is presented for optimal construction of micro-grid. The problem is solved in two stages. In the first stage, the network is designed as an integrated and active distribution network considering the importance of reliability by using Backward–forward load flow. Next, the distribution network is designed to be divided in to several MGs in order to minimize the cost of electricity generation, improve reliability and voltage profile. In the presented study, stochastic models are considered for representing generation availability related to wind energy and solar energy. The generated power of distributed generation resources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic, have been modeled per hours of the day and the amount of important network parameters are obtained from the results of probabilistic load flow. Practical and important factors such as problem solving space reduction, load controllability, load priority, bus voltage limitation, line capacity limitation and the possibility of forming larger micro-grids by connecting switches between the obtained initial MGs from the first stage are considered in the proposed method.The proposed methodology is implemented for a standard 69-bus distribution system by applying the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) in MATLAB software. Results verify the usefulness of the proposed approach in transforming an existing radial distribution network into several autonomous MG.

Hypercholesterolemia and carotid atherosclerosis contribute to the etiology of stroke. However, there has been a lack of appropriate comorbid animal models incorporating some of the ubiquitous characteristics that precede strokes. Curcumin is a natural active polyphenolic compound extracted from the rhizoma of Curcuma longa L. which possesses comprehensive bioactivities. The present study aimed to evaluate whether neurobehavioral deficits, neuroendocrine-immune dysregulations and cerebral microcirculation dysfunction, are part of the initial stages of cerebral ischemia in individuals suffering from carotid atherosclerosis resulting from a high cholesterol diet (HCD) and if they could be tested using a comorbid animal model. Furthermore, the utility of this model will be examined following the administration of curcumin. Adult wild-type SD rats were fed a regular diet or HCD and supplemented with either vehicle or curcumin for 4 weeks. Carotid injury was induced by an air-drying endothelial denudation method at the end of the second week. Plasma cholesterol, carotid pathomorphology, neurobehavioral tests, and neuroendocrine-immune parameters were measured. We found higher plasma levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), intima and media (I/M) ratio, but lower high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), spatial learning and memory capacity impairment, elevated NPY expression in the hypothalamus, increased plasma concentration of leptin, upregulated TNF-α, IL-1β, and CRP in the circulation as well as TNF-α and IL-1β in the cerebral cortex, plus enhanced ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin in cerebral microvessels in HCD-fed model rats. All these alterations were ameliorated by curcumin. These results suggest that a comorbid rat model was effectively developed by HCD and carotid injury.

The poor stability of carbon materials doped with nitrogen limited their development in acetylene hydrochlorination. Therefore, investigating the deactivation reasons of carbon catalysts and researching regeneration methods became the research focus. Herein, carbon-nitrogen materials were synthesized by one-step pyrolysis, which using biomass materials with high nitrogen content, the synthesized material was used in an acetylene hydrochlorination reaction. The acetylene conversion rate of D-GH-800 catalyst was up to 99%, but the catalytic activity decreased by 30% after 60 h reaction. Thermogravimetric analysis results showed that the coke content was 5.87%, resulting in catalyst deactivation. Temperature-programmed desorption verified that the deactivation was due to the strong adsorption and difficult desorption of acetylene by the D-GH-800 catalyst, resulting in the accumulation of acetylene on the catalyst surface to form carbon polymers and leading to the pore blockage phenomenon. Furthermore, based on the catalyst deactivation by carbon accumulation, we proposed a new idea of regeneration by ZnCl2 activation to eliminate carbon deposition in the pores of the deactivated catalyst. As a result, the activity of D-GH-800 was recovered, and lifetime was also extended. Our strategy illustrated the mechanism of carbon deposition, and the recoverability of the catalyst has promising applications.

Neuroinflammation regulated by microglia is one of the important factors involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Activated microglia exhibited phenotypes termed as M1 and M2 phenotypes separately. M1 microglia contribute to the development of inflammation via upregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines, while M2 microglia exert anti-inflammation effects through enhancing the expression of anti-inflammation factors. Moreover, M1 and M2 microglia could be mutually transformed under various conditions. Both M1 and M2 microglia are implicated in AD. Amyloid-β (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau are two major components of AD pathological hallmarks, neuritic plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles. Both Aβ and hyperphosphorylated tau were involved in microglial activation and subsequent inflammation, which further contribute to neuronal and synaptic loss in AD. In this review, we summarized the roles of M1 and M2 microglia in AD and underlying mechanisms, which will provide an insight into the role of microglia in the pathogenesis of AD and highlight the therapeutic potential of modulating microglia.

Gossypium barbadense is a cultivated cotton not only known for producing superior fiber but also for its salt and alkaline resistance. Here, we used Whole Genome Bisulfite Sequencing (WGBS) technology to map the cytosine methylation of the whole genome of the G. barbadense hypocotyl at single base resolution. The methylation sequencing results showed that the mapping rates of the three samples were 75.32, 77.54, and 77.94%, respectively. In addition, the Bisulfite Sequence (BS) conversion rate was 99.78%. Approximately 71.03, 53.87, and 6.26% of the cytosine were methylated at CG, CHG, and CHH sequence contexts, respectively. A comprehensive analysis of DNA methylation and transcriptome data showed that the methylation level of the promoter region was a positive correlation in the CHH context. Saline-alkaline stress was related to the methylation changes of many genes, transcription factors (TFs) and transposable elements (TEs), respectively. We explored the regulatory mechanism of DNA methylation in response to salt and alkaline stress during cotton hypocotyl elongation. Our data shed light into the relationship of methylation regulation at the germination stage of G. barbadense hypocotyl cell elongation and salt-alkali treatment. The results of this research help understand the early growth regulation mechanism of G. barbadense in response to abiotic stress.

A rim seal is often used to prevent the ingress of high-temperature gas into the turbine disk cavity and protect the turbine disk from damage. Based on the overlapping rim seal (Seal-A), this paper proposes two more composite sealing structures (Seal-B and Seal-C) to show the effects of a deep cavity in the static disk and a modified platform in the rotating disk. Three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the shear stress transfer (SST) k-ω turbulence model were used to reveal the flow field characteristics and the sealing efficiency. The results show that the rotor–stator interaction plays a dominant role in the sealing outlet pressure, and the sealing efficiency in the outflow area obtained by the transient calculation is lower than that of the steady-state calculation. The rise in the cooling air flow enhances the reverse vortex in the sealing cavity, and the disk cavity’s sealing efficiency is also improved. When the cooling air flow ratio increases from 0.6% to 1.8%, the sealing efficiency at the high radius increases by 30%. The shape of the deep cavity produces a new return vortex at the lower part of the sealing cavity, which improves the sealing efficiency. The shark nose platform in Seal-C aggravates the gas ingress at the sealing outlet but improves the sealing efficiency at the sealing cavity. In general, compared with Seal-A, the sealing efficiency of Seal-B and Seal-C is increased by 13.5% and 10%, respectively, at a cooling air flow ratio of 0.6%.

The amyloid cascade hypothesis has predominately been used to describe the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) for decades, as Aβ oligomers are thought to be the prime cause of AD. Meanwhile, the neurotrophic factor hypothesis has also been proposed for decades. Accumulating evidence states that the amyloidogenic process and neurotrophic dysfunction are mutually influenced and may coincidently cause the onset and progress of AD. Meanwhile, there are intracellular regulators participating both in the amyloidogenic process and neurotrophic pathways, which might be the common original causes of amyloidogenesis and neurotrophic dysfunction. In this review, the current understanding regarding the role of neurotrophic dysfunction and the amyloidogenic process in AD pathology is briefly summarized. The mutual influence of these two pathogenesis pathways and their potential common causal pathway are further discussed. Therapeutic strategies targeting the common pathways to simultaneously prevent amyloidogenesis and neurotrophic dysfunction might be anticipated for the disease-modifying treatment of AD.

The synthesis of nanometer-sized metallic nanoparticles utilizing bio-sources is one of the most cost-effective and ecologically friendly approaches. Nano-zinc oxide particles (N-ZnO Ps) were made using a simple green synthesis method using an aqueous zinc nitrate salt and Perilla frutescens crude protein as a protecting and reducing agent in the current work. UV-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), (energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy) EDX and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) were used to characterize the synthesized N-ZnO Ps. A distinctive UV-vis absorption peak was observed at 370 nm due to N-ZnO Ps. The SEM and HR-TEM pictures revealed N-ZnO Ps with a triangular form. The XRD pattern indicated the wurtzite structure of N-ZnO Ps. Nanoparticles exhibited a zeta potential of −11.3 mV. The antibacterial activity of N-ZnO Ps was tested against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumonia) microorganisms. The N-ZnO Ps were non-toxic to HMC-3 human normal brain microglia cells; however, they exhibited a potential cytotoxic effect on the LN-18 human brain glioblastoma cell line. These results indicate that N-ZnOPs can act as promising antibacterial and anticancer treatments in the prevention of Glioblastoma.
