The assembled corrugated steel initial support structure is a new prefabricated structure in highway tunnel engineering, achieving a balance between economy and safety. This study proposes a simplified calculation method and elucidates the mechanical mechanisms of assembled corrugated steel initial support structures. Firstly, the stiffness characteristics of corrugated steel plates were studied based on full-scale tests. A general equivalent stiffness coefficient table was established. Numerical simulations of corrugated steel flange joints were conducted to explore their bending mechanical properties. A two-stage rotational stiffness model for corrugated steel flange joints was proposed. Finally, a plane strain-spring simplified calculation method for the assembled corrugated steel initial support structure was developed, and the monitoring data from the Qipanshan Tunnel validated the correctness and reliability of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that (1) the plane strain-spring simplified model consists of the planar strain equivalent calculation method for corrugated steel plates and the two-line stiffness equivalent spring of the corrugated steel flange joint. The simplified model was validated as effective by monitoring data. (2) Corrugated steel plates exhibit two stages under loading, namely gap elimination and elastic stages. The elastic stage stiffness of corrugated steel plates decreases with increasing ratio of depth to pitch (RDP), positively correlating with plate thickness when the RDP exceeds 0.333 and otherwise negatively correlated. (3) Corrugated steel lining flange joints exhibit distinct elastic and plastic stages in their linear moment–rotation curves under loading.

Corrugated steel–concrete (CSC) composite structures are increasingly used in tunnel and culvert projects due to their good mechanical properties. The design of CSC composite structures is often governed by deflection limits in service, hence it becomes crucial to evaluate accurately their flexural stiffness. In this work, the deflection deformation mechanism of CSC composite structure is studied by experimental and numerical methods, and a simplified formula for calculating the flexural stiffness is established. In addition, the deflection results obtained by different methods are compared and analyzed. It is found that: (1) the flexural stiffness of the CSC composite structure is constant only when the load is small, and after the bending moment exceeds a certain value, the flexural stiffness will gradually become smaller as the bending moment increases. (2) The value of the bending moment corresponding to the end of the elastic stage of the bending moment-deflection curve increases with the increase of the axial force in the composite structure. (3) As the axial force of the composite structure increases, the flexural bearing capacity of the structure increases first and then decreases.

Shield tunnels are inevitably damaged by complex diseases during operation, so repair and reinforcement are essential. The stainless steel corrugated plate (SSCP) has many advantages for tunnel structure reinforcement because of its high strength, lightweight, convenient construction and installation, and corrosion resistance. Mechanical behaviors of an unreinforced segmental joint and a segmental joint reinforced with a new SSCP were investigated by full-scale tests. The reinforcement test took into account the actual reinforcement conditions in the field, i.e. the joint bore the load alone before reinforcement, maintained the load during reinforcement, and bore the load together with the SSCP after reinforcement. The experimental results demonstrate that: (1) both unreinforced and reinforced joints exhibit a compressive-flexural failure mechanism, and their failure is manifested by concrete crushing in the compressed zone of the joint. (2) Compared to that unreinforced joint, the bending moment and ultimate vertical load of the reinforced one are increased by 73.7% and 119.3%, respectively. And the reinforced joint is stiffer than the unreinforced one, reflecting that SSCP reinforcement enables higher stiffness. (3) Trends of strain-moment curves of the bent bolts and concrete are similar in the unreinforced and reinforced joints. Under the same load, the strains in the reinforced group are smaller than those in the unreinforced group, indicating that the SSCP in the reinforced group shares the load. (4) The strains of the SSCP exhibits a symmetrical distribution in the length direction with the joint section as the symmetrical plane. The strains at the trough show tensile strain, while the strains at the crest show compressive strain. The combined force of the corrugated steel plate cross-section is tensile (i.e., SSCP shares the tension load in the tensile zone of the joint), reflecting the reinforcement effect of SSCP.

It is well known that yield strength is an important mechanical property of construction materials. In construction projects, engineers need to consider the effect of temperature on steel to meet fire safety design requirements, making it necessary to establish a temperature-related yield criterion for steel. The von Mises yield criterion is widely used for isotropic materials because of its good agreement with experimental results. However, the classical von Mises yield criterion does not consider the effect of temperature. Therefore, this study aims to establish a new temperature-dependent generalized von Mises (TGM) yield criterion for construction-grade steels. According to the energy-based theory, the effect of temperature on isotropic metallic materials is investigated and the TGM yield function is further derived based on the classical von Mises yield criterion. Further, it is proved by derivation that the classical von Mises yield criterion agrees with the new TGM yield criterion developed herein when the temperature is fixed, which indicates that the classical von Mises yield criterion is a special case of the TGM yield criterion. Then, the theoretical results of temperature-dependent yield strength calculated by the TGM yield criterion are compared with the experimental results, based on high-temperature tensile test data from five steels (two stainless steels and three high-strength alloy steels). The theoretical results are consistent with the experimental results, which verifies the reasonableness of the TGM yield criterion. This study may provide a reference for scholars and engineers in studying and designing steel structures for fire safety.

The water-sensitive effect of expansive soil (ES) poses a serious challenge to the safety and durability of infrastructure. To reduce the effect of water sensitivity on expansive soil, a new powder soil passivator with polyacrylic (PA) as the main component was proposed. In this paper, a series of macroscopic and microscopic tests were conducted to evaluate the water-sensitive passivation effect and mechanism of PA-ES composites. The results showed that PA significantly attenuated the water sensitivity of ES. With the increase in PA content in the PA-ES composites, the water sensitivity of the composites decreased, swelling and shrinkage deformation decreased, and the strength of the composites increased significantly. In addition, when the content of PA in the PA-ES composite is 6%, it can significantly alleviate the deformation of the composite and improve the saturated shear strength of the composite, meeting the requirements of ES engineering disposal. Finally, the results show that the mechanism of PA passivation of ES water-sensitive effect mainly includes adsorption, binding, and filling. The study shows that PA has a broad engineering application prospect as an ES passivator.

A new duplex stainless steel (S32001) with good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties has been introduced into building structures in recent years. It is necessary to study its mechanical properties at room temperature and high temperature to provide a reference for structural design. In the present research, a series of tensile tests were conducted in 11 groups at different temperatures, including room temperature and between 100 and 1000 °C. The steady-state tensile test method with strain rate control was adopted. The failure modes, stress-strain relationships, and the related mechanical parameters (including ultimate elongation, elastic modulus, yield strength, and ultimate strength) were investigated. The test results were compared with existing research finding related to the high-temperature mechanical properties of carbon and other stainless steels. The results indicated that: (1) the ultimate strain of S32001 is about 40% at room temperature, and the ultimate strain first decreases slowly and then increases rapidly with rising temperature. (2) When the temperature is below 500 °C, the elastic modulus of S32001 decreases slowly with the increase of temperature. When the temperature exceeds 500 °C, the elastic modulus decreases sharply with the increase of temperature. (3) The strength of S32001 decreases with increasing temperature. It decreases slowly when the temperature is lower than 500 °C and decreases faster when the temperature exceeds 500 °C. (4) Compared with the existing research results on the thermo-mechanical properties of other steel grades, significant differences between different steel grades can be found.

Basalt platforms are widely distributed in many areas of China, where landslides occur frequently. It is well recognized that landslide hazards seriously threaten engineering constructions and property safety. It is, therefore, of great significance to understand deformation and failure behaviors and their mechanisms in basalt slopes to reduce the loss caused by landslides. In this work, the Pengshan Landslide in Zhejiang Province is taken as a prototype and slope model tests are carried out. During the tests, real-time monitoring of pore pressure, earth pressure and slope deformation is conducted. Based on the experimental data, the influence of rainfall intensity and the thickness of a weak interlayer on the slope stability are obtained. It is demonstrated that the rainfall and weak interlayer are the most important factors causing the slope instability of a basalt platform. Furthermore, damage from a basalt platform slope usually starts from local failure, and the slope foot is the most likely sliding part. Moreover, when the rainfall intensity is doubled, the initial deformation time of the slope is reduced by about half and the final failure time is advanced by one-third. In addition, when the thickness of the weak interlayer is doubled, the initial deformation time of slope is shortened by about half and the final failure time is advanced by one-quarter.

The rheological phenomenon of rock mass affects the long-term safety of rock mass engineering. In this study, gneiss samples with different 3D morphologies are prepared by splitting tests and are tested through multi-step creep tests. The long-term strength of rock discontinuities is determined by using several methods. The test results show that as the 3D morphological parameter increases, the creep deformation, creep rate, and the duration of failure all decrease. The long-term strength of rock discontinuities is linearly related to the 3D morphological parameter. Based on the principle of damage mechanics for rock mass, a damage variable is introduced in the creep model, and an improved non-linear Burgers model is established. Research results are of great theoretical significance and practical value for the design, construction, and long-term safety of rock mass engineering.

In this study, a data analysis method for the relaxation test was proposed under step loading by conducting creep and stress relaxation tests of dentate discontinuity poured by cement mortar using biaxial creep machine under step loading and single-stage loading. First, a superposition method for the stress relaxation curve was deduced based on the data processing method of creep test by considering the effect of loading history on the relaxation curve and the characteristic of relaxation was analyzed. Second, this superposition method was verified by testing data under step loading and single-stage loading. Finally, this paper indicate the accurate way for the processing of relaxation test data under step loading. The results show that under the same stress level, the values of relaxation curve after the superposition are different from that under the single-stage loading test. Furthermore, the relaxation curves in the step loading test under different stress levels are similar to those in single-stage loading under the same stress level. Furthermore, creep deformation increase monotonically during the creep, but stress do not exhibit such a trend during relaxation, which is inconsistent with the Boltzmann superposition principle. The relaxation curve in the step loading test under different shear stress could reflect the relaxation properties of the single-stage loading test under the same shear stress, and unlike the data processing method of step loading creep test, superimposition is not needed.

In order to study the instantaneous mechanical properties of rock mass discontinuities with different 3D morphologies during the shear process, the Brazilian splitting method is used to prepare natural rock mass discontinuities, and the high-precision 3D scanning test of discontinuities is carried out. The Z2 is selected as the evaluation parameter of the discontinuities. Based on the graded cyclic shear test results of discontinuities, the influence of the morphology characteristics on the strength and deformation characteristics is analyzed. With the increase of shear times, the 3D morphology characteristic parameters of the structural plane decrease steadily after the graded cyclic shear. Based on the test curve, the graded cyclic shear characteristics of rock mass discontinuities are analyzed from the shear deformation, and the shear process of the discontinuities is finely divided by combining with the variation characteristics of shear stiffness. Combined with the 3D morphology parameters, an empirical formula for the shear strength of discontinuities is proposed. Through verification, the effect of the new model is better than that of the classical JRC-JCS model.

Landslide dams are dangerous because the outburst floods produced by dam failures seriously threaten life and property downstream. In this study, a series of physical flume tests were conducted to investigate the breaching process of landslide dams with fine-grained, well graded, and coarse-grained material under different inflow conditions. The effects of dam material and inflow discharge on the breach development, outflow discharge and erosion characteristics were studied. The erosion resistance of materials and lateral collapses were also discussed. Experimental results reveal that the whole breaching process is determined by the water-sediment interaction. For the fine-grained dams, a general constant downstream slope angle is maintained during the breaching process. For the well-graded dams, a step-pool structure is generated due to the scarp erosion. For the coarse-grained dams, they can remain stable under normal circumstances but fail by overtopping in a short duration under the extreme inflow condition. The final breach of the dam with higher fine content or larger inflow discharge is deeper and narrower. In addition, many fluctuations are observed in the changing curve of the erosion rates along the flow direction for the well-graded and coarse-grained dams. The erosion resistance of materials increases along the flow direction, which needs to be further considered in physically based breach models. Furthermore, the lateral collapse is affected by the dam material instead of inflow discharge. The lower fine content causes more lateral collapses with smaller volumes.

The weakening effect is one of the most important causes triggering large deformation and failure of soft-rock engineering; however, few studies paid attention to damage evolution and constitutive relationship of rock in tensile damage in the excavation unloading and water-weakening process, not to mention the coupling process of unloading and water-weakening. In this paper, the mechanism and engineering characteristics of unloading softening and water-softening of water-rich soft rock are analyzed and summarized. Then with the aid of the strain equivalent principle, the damage of surrounding rock caused by unloading softening and water-softening is coupled, and the compression shear damage and the tensile damage of surrounding rock under the unloading process are analyzed. A damage constitutive model of rock subjected to excavation unloading and water-weakening is proposed considering the influence of water immersion time, and the proposed model is applied in a newly established finite element simulation method, which is suitable for excavation in the water-rich soft rock. Based on the mechanical-hydraulic-damage coupled method, the progressive failure process of surrounding rock under the dual softening effects can be reflected by the deteriorated parameters of damage elements. Finally, the field monitoring data of a typical section in the Xujiadi tunnel is used to verify the applicability and accuracy of the proposed dual softening model and simulation method.

Grouting reinforcement is an important method used to solve problems encountered during tunnel construction, such as collapse and water gushing. The grouting diffusion process is greatly influenced by the structural characteristics of the fractures in a rock mass. First, an analytical grouting diffusion model of a single rough fracture under constant-pressure control is established based on the constitutive equation of a Bingham fluid. Second, the “quasi-elliptical” grouting diffusion pattern under the influence of roughness is revealed through a grouting diffusion experiment, which is conducted with an independently developed visualized testing apparatus. Furthermore, the analytical formula of roughness-corrected grouting diffusion characterized by the saw tooth density is established. Finally, an elaborate numerical simulation of the diffusion process of cement slurry (Bingham flow type) in a single rough fracture is carried out by introducing the Bingham–Papanastasiou rheological model. The temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the velocity field and pressure field during the grouting diffusion process are analyzed as well. Moreover, the method and range of the roughness correction factor in the analytical grouting diffusion model are proposed based on the fracture roughness unit.

Common lymphoid progenitors (CLPs) are thought to represent major intermediates in the transition of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) to B lineage lymphocytes. However, it has been obvious for some time that CLPs are heterogeneous, and there has been controversy concerning their differentiation potential. We have now resolved four Flt3(+) CLP subsets that are relatively homogenous and capable of forming B cells. Differentiation potential and gene expression patterns suggest Flt3(+) CLPs lacking both Ly6D and RAG-1 are the least differentiated. In addition to B cells, they generate natural killer (NK) and dendritic cells (DCs). At the other extreme is a subset of the recently described Flt3(+) Ly6D(+) CLPs that have a history of RAG-1 expression and are B lineage restricted. These relatively abundant and potent CLPs were depleted within 48 hours of acute in vivo estrogen elevation, suggesting they descend from hormone regulated progenitors. This contrasts with the hormone insensitivity of other CLP subsets that include NK lineage progenitors. This progenitor heterogeneity and differentiation complexity may add flexibility in response to environmental changes. Expression of RAG-1 and display of Ly6D are both milestone events, but they are neither synchronized nor dependent on each other.

In this study, Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber hemodialysis membranes were prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) with compound addtive. The compound additive was made with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and Poly ethylene glycol (PEG). The results showed that the modified PVDF membrane had better separation performance than virgin PVDF membrane. The UF flux of modified PVDF membrane can reach 684 L·h−1·m−2 and lysozyme (LZM) passage is 72.6% while virgin PVDF membrane is 313 L·h−1·m−2 and 53.2%. At the same time, the biocompatibility of PVDF membranes was also improved. Compared with commercial polysulfone hemodialysis membrane (Fresenius F60S membrane), the modified PVDF membrane had better mechanical and separation performance. The stress and tensile elongation of modified PVDF membrane was 0.94 MPa and 352% while Fresenius F60S membrane was 0.79 MPa and 59%. The LZM passage reached 72.6% while Fresenius F60S membrane was 54.4%. It was proven that the modified PVDF membrane showed better hydrophilicity, antithrombogenicity, less BSA adsorption, and lower hemolytic ratio and adhesion of platelets. Water contact angle and BSA adsorption of the modified PVDF membrane are 38° and 45 mg/m2 while Fresenius F60S membrane are 64° and 235 mg/m2. Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) of the modified PVDF membrane are 56.5 s and 25.8 s while Fresenius F60S membrane is 35.7 s and 16.6 s. However, further biocompatibility evaluation is needed to obtain a more comprehensive conclusion.

BACKGROUND:Requirements for human B lymphopoiesis are still poorly understood, and that has hampered investigation of differentiation events. For example, there are few cell surface antigens that can be used as milestones of lineage progression. The CD10 ectoenzyme is one such marker and has been used to define CLP, but we found substantial tissue specific variations in CD10 levels, and there was no information about how that corresponded to differentiation options. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:The aim of the present study was to use recently developed culture methods to assess the nature and differentiation potential of progenitors sorted according to CD10 density from umbilical cord blood (CB), adult bone marrow (BM) or G-CSF mobilized peripheral blood (PB). Many CD34(+) cells in BM express high levels of CD10, while low or low/negative CD10 densities were found on CD34(+) cells in CB or G-CSF mobilized PB, respectively. The relative abundance of CD10(Lo) versus CD10(Hi) cells only accounts for some CB versus BM differences. Almost all of the CD34(+) CD10(Hi) cells expressed CD19 and lymphocyte transcription factors and corresponded to loss of myeloid potential. A high degree of immunoglobulin D(H)-J(H) gene rearrangements was characteristic only of the CD10(Hi) subset. In contrast, the CD34(+) CD10(Lo) progenitors efficiently produced plasmacytoid and conventional dendritic cells as well as myeloid cells. These findings suggest a positive correlation between CD10 density and degree of differentiation. Although freshly isolated CD34(+) CD10(Hi) cells were in cycle, those from CB or BM expanded poorly in culture, suggesting regulators of populations remain to be discovered. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:Steps in human B lymphopoiesis have not been sufficiently studied, and we now show that increased CD10 expression corresponds to differentiation potential and stage. CD34(+) CD10(Hi) progenitors are obviously in the B lineage but may have progressed beyond the point where they can be expanded in culture.
