Bicontinuous structures promise applications in a broad range of research fields, such as energy storage, membrane science, and biomaterials. Kinetically arrested spinodal decomposition is found responsible for stabilizing such structures in different types of materials. A recently developed solvent segregation driven gel (SeedGel) is demonstrated to realize bicontinuous channels thermoreversibly with tunable domain sizes by trapping nanoparticles in a particle domain. As the mechanical properties of SeedGel are very important for its future applications, a model system is characterized by temperature-dependent rheology. The storage modulus shows excellent thermo-reproducibility and interesting temperature dependence with the maximum storage modulus observed at an intermediate temperature range (around 28 °C). SANS measurements are conducted at different temperatures to identify the macroscopic solvent phase separation during the gelation transition, and solvent exchange between solvent and particle domains that is responsible for this behavior. The long-time dynamics of the gel is further studied by X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS). The results indicate that particles in the particle domain are in a glassy state and their long-time dynamics are strongly correlated with the temperature dependence of the storage modulus.

The relaxation and aging of an assembly of spherical nanoparticles (NPs) at a water-oil interface are characterized in situ by grazing incidence X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. The dynamics of the interfacial assembly is measured while the interface saturates with NPs. Weak attractions between NPs lead to gel-like structures in the assembly, where the in-plane ordering is inhibited by the broad size distribution of the NPs. Structural rearrangements on the length scale of the NP-NP center-to-center distances proceed by intermittent fluctuations instead of continuous cooperative motions. The coexistence of rapid and slow NP populations is confirmed, as commonly observed in soft glass-forming materials. Dynamics are increasingly slowed as the NPs initially segregate to the locally clustered interface. The structural relaxation of the NPs in these localized clusters is 5 orders of magnitude slower than that of free particles in the bulk. When the interface is nearly saturated, the time for relaxation increases suddenly due to the onset of local jamming, and the dynamics slow exponentially afterward until the system reaches collective jamming by cooperative rearrangements. This investigation provides insights into structural relaxations near the glass transition and the evolution of the structure and dynamics of the assemblies as they transition from an isotropic liquid to a dense disordered film.

X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) probes the spontaneous fluctuation in spatial configurations of mixed phases, which can significantly impact the material properties of complex fluid. Tailored material design, however, requires navigation through massive multi-dimensional parameter space which is beyond the bandwidth of current XPCS beamline infrastructure. Using 3.7 μs-resolved XPCS, we demonstrate that Brownian dynamics of silica colloidal nanoparticles in a shielded pendant drop suspended from an electronic pipette is consistent with a sealed capillary, validating the use of pendant drop for automated XPCS measurement. Furthermore, the electronic pipette can be mounted on a robotic arm to access different stock solutions and create samples with highly-repeatable and precisely-controlled composition profiles (Video S2). This closed-loop, AI-executable experimental protocol is the first step towards autonomous material discovery and is applicable for not only XPCS, but also other high-throughput light and x-ray scattering techniques for multimodal, collaborative material characterization.

Extractant aggregation in liquid-liquid extraction organic phases impacts extraction energetics and is related to the deleterious efficiency-limiting liquid-liquid phase transition known as third phase formation. Using small angle x-ray scattering, we find that structural heterogeneities across a wide range of compositions in binary mixtures of malonamide extractants and alkane diluents are well described by Ornstein-Zernike scattering. This suggests that structure in these simplified organic phases originates from the critical point associated with the liquid-liquid phase transition. To confirm this, we measure the temperature dependence of the organic phase structure, finding critical exponents consistent with the 3D Ising model. Molecular dynamics simulations were also consistent with this mechanism for extractant aggregation. Due to the absence of water or any other polar solutes required to form reverse-micellar-like nanostructures, these fluctuations are inherent to the binary extractant/diluent mixture. Our previous work found pseudobinary critical fluctuations near the critical point for more complex organic phases with extracted polar solutes, including water, acid and metal ions. Taken together, these results suggest this mechanism for explaining organic phase aggregation may dominate over a wide range of conditions encountered in practical liquid-liquid extraction organic phases. We also show how the molecular structure of the extractant and diluent modulate these critical concentration fluctuations by shifting the critical temperature: critical fluctuations are suppressed by increasing extractant alkyl tail lengths or decreasing diluent alkyl chain lengths. This is consistent with how extractant and diluent molecular structure are known to impact metal and acid loading capacity in many-component LLE organic phases, suggesting phase behavior of practical systems may be effectively studied in simplified organic phases. Overall, the explicit connection between molecular structure, aggregation and phase behavior demonstrated here will enable the design of more efficient separations processes.

Wormlike micelles (WLMs) are ubiquitous viscoelastic modifiers that share properties with polymer solutions. While their macroscopic rheology is well-understood, their microscopic dynamics remain difficult to measure because they span a large range of time and length scales. In this work, we demonstrate the use of X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to interrogate the segmental dynamics of inverse WLM solutions swollen with a rubidium chloride solution. We observe a diffusive scaling of the dynamics and extract a temperature-dependent diffusion coefficient, which we associate with the thermal interactions of the slow segmental dynamics near entanglement points. We probe this relaxation process across the unbranched to branched topological transition and find no microstructural evidence of branch formation in the slow mode. Instead, we observe that the dynamics become more homogeneous and prominent as the temperature is reduced and water content increases.

Arrested soft materials such as gels and glasses exhibit a slow stress relaxation with a broad distribution of relaxation times in response to linear mechanical perturbations. Although this macroscopic stress relaxation is an essential feature in the application of arrested systems as structural materials, consumer products, foods, and biological materials, the microscopic origins of this relaxation remain poorly understood. Here, we elucidate the microscopic dynamics underlying the stress relaxation of such arrested soft materials under both quiescent and mechanically perturbed conditions through X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. By studying the dynamics of a model associative gel system that undergoes dynamical arrest in the absence of aging effects, we show that the mean stress relaxation time measured from linear rheometry is directly correlated to the quiescent superdiffusive dynamics of the microscopic clusters, which are governed by a buildup of internal stresses during arrest. We also show that perturbing the system via small mechanical deformations can result in large intermittent fluctuations in the form of avalanches, which give rise to a broad non-Gaussian spectrum of relaxation modes at short times that is observed in stress relaxation measurements. These findings suggest that the linear viscoelastic stress relaxation in arrested soft materials may be governed by nonlinear phenomena involving an interplay of internal stress relaxations and perturbation-induced intermittent avalanches.

Summary Polymer semiconductors have shown distinct promise for the development of human-integrated electronics, owing to their solution processability and mechanical softness. However, numerous functional properties required for this application domain face synthetic challenges to being conveyed onto conjugated polymers and thus combined with efficient charge-transport properties. Here, we develop a “click-to-polymer” (CLIP) synthesis strategy for conjugated polymers, which uses a click reaction for the facile and versatile attachment of diverse types of functional units to a pre-synthesized conjugated-polymer precursor. With four types of functional groups, we show that functionalized polymers from this CLIP method can still retain good charge-carrier mobility. We take two realized polymers to showcase a photopatternable property and a biochemical sensing function, both of which advance the state of the art of realizing these two types of functions on conjugated polymers. We expect that the expanded use of this synthesis approach can largely enrich the functional properties of conjugated polymers.

Understanding the behavior of defects in the complex oxides is key to controlling myriad ionic and electronic properties in these multifunctional materials. The observation of defect dynamics, however, requires a unique probe-one sensitive to the configuration of defects as well as its time evolution. Here, we present measurements of oxygen vacancy ordering in epitaxial thin films of SrCoO_{x} and the brownmillerite-perovskite phase transition employing x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. These and associated synchrotron measurements and theory calculations reveal the close interaction between the kinetics and the dynamics of the phase transition, showing how spatial and temporal fluctuations of heterointerface evolve during the transformation process. The energetics of the transition are correlated with the behavior of oxygen vacancies, and the dimensionality of the transformation is shown to depend strongly on whether the phase is undergoing oxidation or reduction. The experimental and theoretical methods described here are broadly applicable to in situ measurements of dynamic phase behavior and demonstrate how coherence may be employed for novel studies of the complex oxides as enabled by the arrival of fourth-generation hard x-ray coherent light sources.

An experimental setup to measure X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy during continuous sample translation is presented and its effectiveness as a means to avoid sample damage in dynamics studies of protein diffusion is evaluated. X-ray damage from focused coherent synchrotron radiation remains below tolerable levels as long as the sample is translated through the beam sufficiently quickly. Here it is shown that it is possible to separate sample dynamics from the effects associated with the transit of the sample through the beam. By varying the sample translation rate, the damage threshold level, D thresh = 1.8 kGy, for when beam damage begins to modify the dynamics under the conditions used, is also determined. Signal-to-noise ratios, R sn ≥ 20, are obtained down to the shortest delay times of 20 µs. The applicability of this method of data collection to the next generation of multi-bend achromat synchrotron sources is discussed and it is shown that sub-microsecond dynamics should be obtainable on protein samples.

The performance of the new 52 kHz frame rate Rigaku XSPA-500k detector was characterized on beamline 8-ID-I at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne for X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) applications. Due to the large data flow produced by this detector (0.2 PB of data per 24 h of continuous operation), a workflow system was deployed that uses the Advanced Photon Source data-management (DM) system and high-performance software to rapidly reduce area-detector data to multi-tau and two-time correlation functions in near real time, providing human-in-the-loop feedback to experimenters. The utility and performance of the workflow system are demonstrated via its application to a variety of small-angle XPCS measurements acquired from different detectors in different XPCS measurement modalities. The XSPA-500k detector, the software and the DM workflow system allow for the efficient acquisition and reduction of up to ∼109 area-detector data frames per day, facilitating the application of XPCS to measuring samples with weak scattering and fast dynamics.

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) represent an emerging device platform for next-generation bioelectronics owing to the uniquely high amplification and sensitivity to biological signals. For achieving seamless tissue-electronics interfaces for accurate signal acquisition, skin-like softness and stretchability are essential requirements, but they have not yet been imparted onto high-performance OECTs, largely due to the lack of stretchable redox-active semiconducting polymers. Here, a stretchable semiconductor is reported for OECT devices, namely poly(2-(3,3'-bis(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)-[2,2'-bithiophen]-5)yl thiophene) (p(g2T-T)), which gives exceptional stretchability over 200% strain and 5000 repeated stretching cycles, together with OECT performance on par with the state-of-the-art. Validated by systematic characterizations and comparisons of different polymers, the key design features of this polymer that enable the combination of high stretchability and high OECT performance are a nonlinear backbone architecture, a moderate side-chain density, and a sufficiently high molecular weight. Summary Living tissues are an integrated, multiscale architecture consisting of dense cellular ensembles and extracellular matrices (ECMs). The cells and ECMs cooperate to enable specialized mechanical properties and dynamic responsiveness. However, the mechanical properties of living tissues are difficult to replicate. A particular challenge is identification of a cell-like synthetic component, which is tightly integrated with its matrix and also responsive to external stimuli. Here, we demonstrate that cellular-scale hydrated starch granules, an underexplored component in materials science, can turn conventional hydrogels into tissue-like materials when composites are formed. By using several synchrotron-based X-ray techniques, we reveal the mechanically induced organization and training dynamics of the starch granules in the hydrogel matrix. These dynamic behaviors enable multiple tissue-like properties such as programmability, anisotropy, strain-stiffening, mechanochemistry, and self-healability.

Polymer electrolytes are found at the heart of numerous electrochemical technologies involved in energy storage, conversion and separations. An important property of these materials is their partitioning behavior of ions in aqueous solutions and its effect on the activity of the ions within the polymer electrolyte. In this work, the fraction of condensed counterions (fc) were quantified in nanostructured block copolymer electrolyte (BCE) thin films with new and established experimental techniques. The transition between the osmotic-controlled regime and condensation-controlled regime in BCEs was identified using environmental GI-SAXS and solution uptake measurements via a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Further, the activity coefficients of ions in thin film BCEs were quantified experimentally and these values matched predictions from Manning's theory of counterion condensation if the average distance between fixed charges on the polymer chains were determined accurately. Classical molecular dynamics simulations were also performed to assess counterion condensation and ionic conductivity values. The simulations showed large fc values in the BCE – agreeing with results from GI-SAXS and QCM. Because a holistic approach was adopted, it was uncovered that fc can vary significantly depending on the experimental method and analysis deployed. Interestingly, ionic conductivity measurements of the BCE thin films with aqueous solutions and humidified vapor revealed that solvation is critical for breaking ion pairs, and that the notion of two distinct counterion types, condensed and non-condensed, may not be the most accurate picture despite the utility of Manning's theory for accurately predicting the activity coefficient of ions in polymer electrolytes.

We report a combined rheology, x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, and modeling study of gel formation and aging in suspensions of nanocolloidal spheres with volume fractions of 0.20 and 0.43 and with a short-range attraction whose strength is tuned by changing temperature. Following a quench from high temperature, where the colloids are essentially hard spheres, to a temperature below the gel point, the suspensions form gels that undergo aging characterized by a steadily increasing elastic shear modulus and slowing, increasingly constrained microscopic dynamics. The aging proceeds at a faster rate for stronger attraction strength. When the attraction strength is suddenly lowered during aging, the gel properties evolve non-monotonically in a manner resembling the Kovacs effect in glasses, in which the modulus decreases and the microscopic dynamics become less constrained for a period before more conventional aging resumes. Eventually, the properties of the gel following the decrease in attraction strength converge to those of a gel that has undergone aging at the lower attraction strength throughout. The time scale of this convergence increases as a power law with the age at which the attraction strength is decreased and decreases exponentially with the magnitude of the change in attraction. A model for gel aging in which particles attach and detach from the gel at rates that depend on their contact number reproduces these trends and reveals that the non-monotonic behavior results from the dispersion in the rates that the populations of particles with different contact number adjust to the new attraction strength.

Electroactive polymer thin films undergo repeated reversible structural change during operation in electrochemical applications. While synchrotron X-ray scattering is powerful for the characterization of stand-alone and ex situ organic thin films, in situ/operando structural characterization has been underutilized-in large part due to complications arising from supporting electrolyte scattering. This has greatly hampered the development of application relevant structure property relationships. Therefore, a new methodology for in situ/operando X-ray characterization that separates the incident and scattered X-ray beam path from the electrolyte is developed. As a proof of concept, the operando structural characterization of weakly-scattering, organic mixed conducting thin films in an aqueous electrolyte environment is demonstrated, accessing previously unexplored changes in the π-π peak and diffuse scatter, while capturing the solvent swollen thin film structure which is inaccessible in previous ex situ studies. These in situ/operando measurements improve the sensitivity to structural changes, capturing minute changes not possible ex situ, and have multimodal potential such as combined Raman measurements that also serve to validate the true in situ/operando conditions of the cell. Finally, new directions enabled by this in situ/operando cell design are examined and state of the art measurements are compared.

Herein, a systematic study where the macromolecular architectures of poly(styrene-block-2-vinyl pyridine) block copolymer electrolytes (BCE) are varied and their activity coefficients and ionic conductivities are compared and rationalized versus a random copolymer electrolyte (RCE) of the same repeat unit chemistry. By performing quartz crystal microbalance, ion-sorption, and ionic conductivity measurements of the thin film copolymer electrolytes, it is found that the RCE has higher ionic activity coefficients. This observation is ascribed to the fact that the ionic groups in the RCE are more spaced out, reducing the overall chain charge density. However, the ionic conductivity of the BCE is 50% higher and 17% higher after the conductivity is normalized by their ion exchange capacity values on a volumetric basis. This is attributed to the presence of percolated pathways in the BCE. To complement the experimental findings, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations showed that the BCE has larger water cluster sizes, rotational dynamics, and diffusion coefficients, which are contributing factors to the higher ionic conductivity of the BCE variant. The findings herein motivate the design of new polymer electrolyte chemistries that exploit the advantages of both RCEs and BCEs.

OBJECTIVE: Tissues have complex structures, comprised of solid and fluid phases. Improved understanding of interactions between joint fluid and extracellular matrix (ECM) is required in models of cartilage mechanics. X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) directly measures nanometer-scale dynamics, and thus can provide insight into biofluid-biosolid interactions in cartilage. This study applies XPCS to evaluate dynamic interactions between intact cartilage and biofluids. DESIGN: Cartilage biopsies were collected from bovine femoral condyles. During XPCS measurements, cartilage samples were exposed to different fluids: deionized water, PBS, synovial fluid, or sonicated synovial fluid. ECM-biofluid interactions were also assessed at different length scales and different depths from the cartilage surface. RESULTS: Using SA-XPCS, cartilage ECM mobility was detected at length scales from 50 to 207 nm. As length scale decreased, time scale for autocorrelation decay decreased, suggesting smaller ECM components are more mobile. ECM dynamics were slowed by dehydrating the sample, demonstrating XPCS assesses matrix mobility in hydrated environments. At all length scales, the matrix was more mobile in deionized water and slowest in synovial fluid. Using the 207 nm length scale assessment, ECM dynamics in synovial fluid were fastest at the cartilage surface and progressively slowed as depth into the sample increased, demonstrating XPCS can assess spatial distribution of ECM dynamics. Finally, ECM mobility increased for sonicated synovial fluid. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the potential of XPCS to provide unique insights into nanometer-scale cartilage ECM mobility in a spatially resolved manner and illustrates the importance of biosolid-biofluid interactions in dictating dynamics of ECM components.

The advent of high-speed x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy now allows the study of critical phenomena in fluids to much smaller length scales and over a wider range of temperatures than is possible with dynamic light scattering. We present an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy study of critical fluctuation dynamics in a complex fluid typical of those used in liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) of ions, dodecane-DMDBTDMA with extracted aqueous $\mathrm{Ce}({\mathrm{NO}}_{3}{)}_{3}$. We observe good agreement with both static and dynamic scaling without the need for significant noncritical background corrections. Critical exponents agree with 3D Ising values, and the fluctuation dynamics are described by simple exponential relaxation. The form of the dynamic master curve deviates somewhat from the Kawasaki result, with a more abrupt transition between the critical and noncritical asymptotic behavior. The concepts of critical phenomena thus provide a quantitative framework for understanding the structure and dynamics of LLE systems and a path forward to new LLE processes.

The structure and packing of organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors have an outsized effect on transport properties. In operating devices this structure is not fixed but is responsive to changes in electrochemical potential, ion intercalation, and solvent swelling. Towards this end, the dynamic structure of a model organic mixed conductor is characterized using multimodal time-resolved operando techniques. Time-resolved operando X-ray scattering reveals asymmetric rates of structural change during doping and dedoping that do not directly depend on potential or charging dynamics. Time-resolved spectroscopy establishes a link between structural transients and the complex dynamics of electronic charge carrier subpopulations, in particular the polaron-bipolaron equilibrium. These findings provide insight into the factors limiting the response time of organic mixed conductor based devices, and present the first real-time observation of the structural changes during doping and dedoping of a conjugated polymer system via X-ray scattering.

2D hybrid halide perovskites with the formula (A')2 (A)n -1 Pbn I3 n +1 have remarkable stability and promising efficiency in photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices, yet fundamental understanding of film formation, key to optimizing these devices, is lacking. Here, in situ grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) is used to monitor film formation during spin-coating. This elucidates the general film formation mechanism of 2D halide perovskites during one-step spin-coating. There are three stages of film formation: sol-gel, oriented 3D, and 2D. Three precursor phases form during the sol-gel stage and transform to perovskite, first giving a highly oriented 3D-like phase at the air/liquid interface followed by subsequent nucleations forming slightly less oriented 2D perovskite. Furthermore, heating before crystallization leads to fewer nucleations and faster removal of the precursors, improving orientation. This outlines the primary causes of phase distribution and perpendicular orientation in 2D perovskite films and paves the way for rationally designed film fabrication techniques.

The ferroelectric domain pattern within lithographically defined PbTiO3/SrTiO3 ferroelectric/dielectric heteroepitaxial superlattice nanostructures is strongly influenced by the edges of the structures. Synchrotron x-ray nanobeam diffraction reveals that the spontaneously formed 180{\deg} ferroelectric stripe domains exhibited by such superlattices adopt a configuration in rectangular nanostructures in which domain walls are aligned with long patterned edges. The angular distribution of x-ray diffuse scattering intensity from nanodomains indicates that domains are aligned within an angular range of approximately 20{\deg} with respect to the edges. Computational studies based on a time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire model show that the preferred direction of the alignment results from lowering of the bulk and electrostrictive contributions to the free energy of the system due to the release of the lateral mechanical constraint. This unexpected alignment appears to be intrinsic and not a result of distortions or defects caused by the patterning process. Our work demonstrates how nanostructuring and patterning of heteroepitaxial superlattices allow for pathways to create and control ferroelectric structures that may appear counterintuitive.

Insight into the spatial ordering and dynamics of structural heterogeneity in materials is at the heart of understanding their structure and function. X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measures the dynamic structure factor S ( Q , t ) providing information on the spontaneous low-energy dynamics intrinsic to many materials. Combined with in situ and in operando capabilities, XPCS provides unique insight into a variety of scientific areas, including phase separation in binary alloys, aging in metallic glasses, surface dynamics during growth, domain wall dynamics in ferroic complex oxides and charge and spin density wave motion in quantum materials. This review summarizes some recent XPCS work in these areas and discusses scientific opportunities that will be made possible with the many-fold increase in coherent flux provided by the world-wide construction and commissioning of X-ray sources based on multi-bend achromat (MBA) storage ring (SR) lattices and high repetition rate free electron lasers (FELs).

Understanding and designing sophisticated new materials require measurements of not only their average structural properties but also their dynamic behavior. X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) provides this information by characterizing fluctuations in condensed matter across a broad range of length scales and timescales. Over the past two decades, XPCS has provided a wide variety of results in the study of materials properties. In this review, we provide an overview of coherence, photon correlation spectroscopy, and the dynamic structure factor as well as information on the mechanics of XPCS experiments. We highlight the impact that this infrastructure has had on materials research and the bright future that is forthcoming with the anticipated upgrade of many third-generation synchrotron sources to fourth-generation multibend achromat sources. A combined X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and rheology study is carried out to capture the evolution of structure, fast particle-scale dynamics, and moduli (elastic and loss) at early times of gel formation near the fluid–gel boundary of a suspension of nanoparticles. The system is comprised of moderately concentrated suspensions of octadecyl silica in decalin (ϕ = 0.2) undergoing thermoreversible gelation. Near the gel boundary, the rate of gel formation is very sensitive to changes in attraction strength. However, we find that at different attraction strengths, the system goes through identical intermediate states of microscopic and macroscopic behavior, even though the absolute time needed to form a gel varies by orders of magnitude. We identify a single dimensionless time parameter, tw/tg, where tw is the wait time following the quench and tg is the rheologically determined gel time, that captures the similarity in gel formation at a range of attraction strengths. Following a temperature quench below the gel boundary, the system is initially fluidlike and forms diffusive clusters (∼8.5 times the particle diameter). After a lag-time, tL, clusters aggregate to form a network like structure which is characterized by the onset of mechanical rigidity and a rapid growth in microscopic relaxation times. At tg, the Baxter parameter obtained from adhesive hard sphere fits of the structure factor attains a constant value corresponding to the theoretical percolation boundary, thus demonstrating that gelation is percolation driven.

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy is performed using a dual counter pixel array detector at a frame rate of 11.8 kHz with no readout dead-time., Small-angle scattering X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) studies were performed using a novel photon-counting pixel array detector with dual counters for each pixel. Each counter can be read out independently from the other to ensure there is no readout dead-time between the neighboring frames. A maximum frame rate of 11.8 kHz was achieved. Results on test samples show good agreement with simple diffusion. The potential of extending the time resolution of XPCS beyond the limit set by the detector frame rate using dual counters is also discussed.

The structure and packing of organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors have an especially significant effect on transport properties. In operating devices, this structure is not fixed but is responsive to changes in electrochemical potential, ion intercalation, and solvent swelling. Toward this end, the steady-state and transient structure of the model organic mixed conductor, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), is characterized using multimodal time-resolved operando techniques. Steady-state operando X-ray scattering reveals a doping-induced lamellar expansion of 1.6 Å followed by 0.4 Å relaxation at high doping levels. Time-resolved operando X-ray scattering reveals asymmetric rates of lamellar structural change during doping and dedoping that do not directly depend on potential or charging transients. Time-resolved spectroscopy establishes a link between structural transients and the complex kinetics of electronic charge carrier subpopulations, in particular the polaron-bipolaron equilibrium. These findings provide insight into the factors limiting the response time of organic mixed-conductor-based devices, and present the first real-time observation of the structural changes during doping and dedoping of a conjugated polymer system via X-ray scattering.

We present a standalone and autonomous X-ray detector capable of operation with the speed of up to1.2 Mfps. The detector utilizes UFXC32k hybrid pixel detectors for sensing X-rays, Spartan-6 LX45 FPGA placed in commercially available sbRIO 9628 controller for data acquisition and processing including a compression with zero-suppression algorithm. A Linux-RT system working on the 400 MHz Dual-Core CPU is used for FPGA control and data streaming to the higher-level system over 1 Gbps Ethernet connection. 1.2 M frames per second is achieved in so-called burst mode of operation while in zerodead-time mode 70 kfps is possible. Due to efficient data compression in FPGA there's no need of using high-speed transceivers and Frame-Grabber cards on the data server side and the detector can stream the data infinitely over standard 1 Gbps network connection. Operation modes were tested at Advanced Photon Source Synchrotron at Argonne National Laboratory.

The dynamics of concentrated suspensions of the eye-lens protein alpha crystallin have been measured using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. Measurements were made at wave vectors corresponding to the first peak in the hard-sphere structure factor and volume fractions close to the critical volume fraction for the glass transition. Langevin dynamics simulations were also performed in parallel to the experiments. The intermediate scattering function f(q,τ) could be fit using a stretched exponential decay for both experiments and numerical simulations. The measured relaxation times show good agreement with simulations for polydisperse hard-sphere colloids.

The ferroelectric domain pattern within lithographically defined PbTiO

Small-angle X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements spanning delay times from 826 ns to 52.8 s were performed using a photon-counting pixel array detector with a dynamic range of 0–3 (2 bits). Fine resolution and a wide dynamic range of time scales was achieved by combining two modes of operation of the detector: (i) continuous mode, where data acquisition and data readout are performed in parallel with a frame acquisition time of 19.36 µs, and (ii) burst mode, where 12 frames are acquired with frame integration times of either 2.56 µs frame−1or 826 ns frame−1followed by 3.49 ms or 1.16 ms, respectively, for readout. The applicability of the detector for performing multi-speckle XPCS was demonstrated by measuring the Brownian dynamics of 10 nm-radius gold and 57 nm-radius silica colloids in water at room temperature. In addition, the capability of the detector to faithfully record one- and two-photon counts was examined by comparing the statistical distribution of photon counts with expected probabilities from the negative binomial distribution. It was found that in burst mode the ratio of 2 s to 1 s is markedly smaller than predicted and that this is attributable to pixel-response dead-time.
