The increasing demand for high-strength lightweight hollow shafts in transportation highlights the need for advanced fabrication techniques. Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys, noted for their superior properties, are selected for three-roll skew rolling (TRSR). In TRSR, the material undergoes combined axial tensile and radial compressive stresses. This study evaluates the feasibility of TRSR for producing high-strength lightweight hollow stepped shafts from Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy. An integrated approach, including constitutive modeling, hot processing map development, and TRSR numerical simulations/experiments, is employed to optimize the TRSR forming process. The constitutive model was established based on 300°C–450 °C & 0.01–10 s−1 hot compression and 350°C–430 °C & 0.1–5 s−1 high-temperature tensile test data. The established Johnson-Cook optimization by genetic algorithms (GA-JC) model and unified viscoplastic constitutive model, accurately capture the alloy's hot deformation behavior, exhibiting minimal average absolute relative errors (AARE) of 5.431% and 5.808%, respectively. Microstructure evolution analyses shed light on the predominant softening mechanisms, emphasizing dynamic recovery (DRV) at elevated strain rates and diminishing texture intensity with escalating deformation temperatures. The composite hot processing map delineates optimal process parameters (400°C–450 °C & 0.1s−1-1s−1), facilitating informed decision-making in manufacturing practices. The validation of numerical simulations through TRSR forming experiments with initial temperature of 450 °C for the billet and axial moving speed of 10 mm/s for the chuck in affirms the feasibility of producing hollow stepped shafts from high-strength Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy. Close agreement was found between simulated and experimental wall thickness variations. This study enhances understanding and optimization of TRSR forming for high-strength lightweight alloys, advancing industrial manufacturing methodologies.

Abstract This study explores the hot deformation behavior of Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy through uniaxial hot compression (200 °C–450°C) using the Gleeble-1500. True stress–strain curves were corrected, and three models were established: the Arrhenius model, strain compensated (SC) Arrhenius model, and strain compensated recrystallization temperature (RT) segmentation-based (TS-SC) Arrhenius model. Comparative analysis revealed the limited predictive accuracy of the SC Arrhenius model, with a 25.12% average absolute relative error (AARE), while the TS-SC Arrhenius model exhibited a significantly improved to 9.901% AARE. Material parameter calculations displayed variations across the temperature range. The SC Arrhenius model, utilizing an average slope method for parameter computation, failed to consider temperature-induced disparities, limiting its predictive capability. Hot processing map, utilizing the Murty improved Dynamic Materials Model (DMM), indicated optimal conditions for stable forming of the Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy. Microstructural analysis revealed MgZn2 precipitation induced by hot deformation, with crystallographic defects enhancing nucleation rates and precipitate refinement.

IntroductionThis paper was to assess the diagnostic performance and clinical value of three-dimensional ultrasonography (3DUS), three-dimensional ultrasonography power Doppler (3DPD), and 3DUS combined with 3DPD in ovarian cancer (OC).MethodsThe study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD 42023405765). PubMed and Web of Science were searched from inception to 25 January 2022, and reference lists of potentially eligible studies were also manually searched. Patient and study characteristics were extracted by two independent reviewers. Any discrepancies were addressed through discussion. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratio (PLR and NLR, respectively), and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were pooled separately.ResultsWe retrieved 2,566 studies, of which 18 were finally enrolled, with 2,548 cases. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, PLR, NLR, and AUC for 3DUS were 0.89 (95% CI: 0.85–0.93), 0.93 (95% CI: 0.88–0.96), 13.1 (95% CI: 7.3–23.4), 0.11 (95% CI: 0.08–0.16), and 0.90 (95% CI: 0.87–0.93), respectively. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, PLR, NLR, and AUC for 3DPD were 0.90 (95% CI: 0.80–0.95), 0.85 (95% CI: 0.71–0.92), 5.8 (95% CI: 3.0–11.2), 0.12 (95% CI: 0.06–0.24), and 0.94 (95% CI: 0.91–0.96), respectively. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, PLR, NLR, and AUC for 3DUS combined with 3DPD were 0.99 (95% CI: 0.73–1.00), 0.95 (95% CI: 0.85–0.99), 21.9 (95% CI: 6.1–78.9), 0.01 (95% CI: 0.00–0.37), and 0.99 (95% CI: 0.98–1.00), respectively.Conclusions3DUS, 3DPD, and 3DUS combined with 3DPD are promising diagnostic tools for OC, alongside elevated sensitivity and specificity. Insufficient drug accumulation at tumor sites is one of the key factors leading to treatment failure in breast cancer (BC), and developing a chemotherapeutic drug delivery system that can improve the immune microenvironment to expand the benefits of immunochemotherapy for BC remains a challenge. To increase the efficacy of BC treatment by extending drug retention at the tumor site, we developed a pH-responsive peptide modified with the PHSCN peptide sequence (Pep1) that self-assembles to form spherical DM/Pep1 nanoparticles after encapsulating doxorubicin (DOX) and metformin (MET). In the acidic tumor microenvironment, spherical nanocarriers transform into aggregates with a high aspect ratio, facilitating DOX and MET release for combined chemotherapy and immunomodulation. In cellular experiments, this construct provided prolonged drug retention in BC cells. In a subcutaneous tumor mouse model, the DM/Pep1 nanoparticles exhibited a superior tumor inhibition effect compared to that of free DOX/MET. The DM/Pep1 nanocomplex upregulated CD4, induced calreticulin (CRT) exposure, downregulated PD-L1, and enhanced the MET-mediated antitumor immune response. The use of this pH-responsive peptide nanocarrier system with morphological transformation offers a promising strategy for BC therapy.

Abstract Heparin (HP) and heparan sulfate (HS) are multifunctional polysaccharides widely used in clinical therapy. Heparinases (Hepases) are enzymes that specifically catalyse HP and HS degradation, and they are valuable tools for studying the structure and function of these polysaccharides and for preparing low molecular weight heparins. In this study, by searching the NCBI database, a novel enzyme named PCHepII was discovered in the genome of the marine bacterium Puteibacter caeruleilacuae. Heterologously expressed PCHepII in Escherichia coli (BL21) has high expression levels and good solubility, active in sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) at 20°C. PCHepII exhibits an enzyme activity of 254 mU/mg towards HP and shows weak degradation capacity for HS. More importantly, PCHepII prefers to catalyse the high-sulfated regions of HP and HS rather than the low-sulfated regions. Although PCHepII functions primarily as an endolytic Hepase, it mainly generates disaccharide products during the degradation of HP substrates over time. Investigations reveal that PCHepII exhibits a preference for catalysing the degradation of small substrates, especially HP tetrasaccharides. The catalytic sites of PCHepII include the residues His199, Tyr254, and His403, which play crucial roles in the catalytic process. The study and characterization of PCHepII can potentially benefit research and applications involving HP/HS, making it a promising enzyme.

Abstract Forest soils are important components of forest ecosystems, and soil quality assessment as a decision-making tool to understand forest soil quality and maintain soil productivity is essential. Various methods of soil quality assessment have been developed, which have occasionally generated inconsistent assessment results between soil types. We assessed the soil quality of five communities (herb, shrub, Quercus acutissima, Pinus thunbergii, and Q. acutissima–P. thunbergii mixed plantation) using two common methods of dry and barren mountains in the Yimeng Mountain area, China. Sixteen soil physical, chemical and biological properties were analysed. The soil quality index was determined using the established minimum data set based on the selection results of principal component analysis and Pearson analysis. Silt, soil total phosphorus (P), soil total nitrogen (N), L-leucine aminopeptidase, acid phosphatase and vector length were identified as the most representative indicators for the minimum data set. An accurate constitutive model is imperative to describe the deformation behavior of aluminum alloy in numerical simulation of thermal plastic forming process. In this study, isothermal uniaxial compressions of 2A12-T4 aluminum alloy were conducted by Gleeble-3500 thermal-mechanical simulator under the temperature of 300–450 °C and strain rate of 0.01–10 s−1. Three different Arrhenius constitutive models, including strain compensation (SC), genetic algorithm (GA) and K-function modification (KM), were established basing on the double correction of the true stress–strain curve by considering the effect of temperature variation and interfacial friction. The prediction accuracy of three models were assessed by the correlation coefficient (R), average absolute relative error (AARE) and the logarithm of the mean square error (ln (MSE)). The results show that the newly KM constitutive model considering the coupling effect of temperature and strain rate showed excellent agreement with the experimental data and best prediction capability with lowest error. Hot processing map based on the Murty-Rao criterion shows that high temperature and low strain rate is suitable for stable forming. In order to verify the reliability of the proposed model in numerical simulation, the established KM Arrhenius constitutive equation is secondarily developed in DEFORM 3D software and used in the hot compression process under the stable forming conditions obtained from hot processing map. The simulated force–displacement curves and maximum load values under forming conditions were well match with the experiment trends, which proved the reliability of the KM constitutive equation in the finite element numerical simulation.

The data shown in this article are related to the published paper entitled “A novel 4-O-endosulfatase with high potential for the structure-function studies of chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate” in Carbohydrate Polymers. In this article, the phylogenetic analysis, cloning, expression, purification, specificity and biochemical characteristics of the identified chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate 4-O-endosulfatase (endoBI4SF) are described in detail. The recombinant endoBI4SF with a molecular mass of 59.13 kDa can can specifically hydrolyze the 4-O- but not 2-O- and 6-O-sulfate groups in the oligo-/polysaccharides of chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate and show the maximum reaction rate in 50 mM Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.0) at 50°C, which can be a very useful tool for the structural and functional studies of chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate.

The high level of stress and dimension deviation induced by glass molding are the main causes of the low yield rate of large, irregular glass components on vehicles. To solve this issue, a numerical model of large glass component molding was established in this study, which aimed to analyze the dominant factors of molding quality and achieve a synergistic balance between quality characteristics and energy consumption. The results show that molding temperature is the dominant factor affecting the energy consumption and residual stress, and the molding pressure is the main factor affecting the dimension deviation. Furthermore, the NSGA-II optimization algorithm was used to optimize the maximum residual stress, dimension deviation, and energy consumption with the numerical results. The combination of a heating rate of 1.95 °C/s, holding time of 158 s, molding temperature of 570 °C, molding pressure of 34 MPa, and cooling rate of 1.15 °C/s was determined to be the optimized scheme. The predictive error of the numerical result, based on the optimized scheme, was experimentally verified to be less than 20%. It proved the accuracy of the model in this study. These results can provide guidance for the subsequent precision molding of large, irregular glass components.

Exolytic heparinases are needed for sequencing of heparin and heparan sulfate (HP), but have not yet been reported. Here, the authors identify exolytic heparinases from different bacteria and show that the heparinases preferentially digest HP, determine the crystal structure of the exoheparinase BlexoHep and perform sequencing of HP octasaccharides using the enzyme.

Chondroitin sulfate (CS)/dermatan sulfate (DS) is a kind of sulfated polyanionic, linear polysaccharide belonging to glycosaminoglycan. CS/DS sulfatases, which specifically hydrolyze sulfate groups from CS/DS oligo-/polysaccharides, are potential tools for structural and functional studies of CD/DS. However, only a few sulfatases have been reported and characterized in detail to date. In this study, two CS/DS sulfatases, PB_3262 and PB_3285, were identified from the marine bacterium Photobacterium sp. QA16 and their action patterns were studied in detail. PB_3262 was characterized as a novel 4-O-endosulfatase that can effectively and specifically hydrolyze the 4-O-sulfate group of disaccharide GlcUAβ1–3GalNAc(4-O-sulfate) but not GlcUAβ1–3GalNAc(4,6-O-sulfate) and IdoUAα1–3GalNAc(4-O-sulfate) in CS/DS oligo-/polysaccharides, which is very different from the identified 4-O-endosulfatases in the substrate profile. In contrast, PB_3285 specifically hydrolyzes the 6-O-sulfate groups of GalNAc(6-O-sulfate) residues located at the reducing ends of the CS chains and is the first recombinantly expressed 6-O-exosulfatase to effectively act on CS oligosaccharides.

Abstract Background Macroalgae and microalgae, as feedstocks for third-generation biofuel, possess competitive strengths in terms of cost, technology and economics. The most important compound in brown macroalgae is alginate, and the synergistic effect of endolytic and exolytic alginate lyases plays a crucial role in the saccharification process of transforming alginate into biofuel. However, there are few studies on the synergistic effect of endolytic and exolytic alginate lyases, especially those from the same bacterial strain. Results In this study, the endolytic alginate lyase AlyPB1 and exolytic alginate lyase AlyPB2 were identified from the marine bacterium Photobacterium sp. FC615. These two enzymes showed quite different and novel enzymatic properties whereas behaved a strong synergistic effect on the saccharification of alginate. Compared to that when AlyPB2 was used alone, the conversion rate of alginate polysaccharides to unsaturated monosaccharides when AlyPB1 and AlyPB2 acted on alginate together was dramatically increased approximately sevenfold. Furthermore, we found that AlyPB1 and AlyPB2 acted the synergistic effect basing on the complementarity of their substrate degradation patterns, particularly due to their M-/G-preference and substrate-size dependence. In addition, a novel method for sequencing alginate oligosaccharides was developed for the first time by combining the 1H NMR spectroscopy and the enzymatic digestion with the exo-lyase AlyPB2, and this method is much simpler than traditional methods based on one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. Using this strategy, the sequences of the final tetrasaccharide and pentasaccharide product fractions produced by AlyPB1 were easily determined: the tetrasaccharide fractions contained two structures, ΔGMM and ΔMMM, at a molar ratio of 1:3.2, and the pentasaccharide fractions contained four structures, ΔMMMM, ΔMGMM, ΔGMMM, and ΔGGMM, at a molar ratio of ~ 1:1.5:3.5:5.25. Conclusions The identification of these two novel alginate lyases provides not only excellent candidate tool-type enzymes for oligosaccharide preparation but also a good model for studying the synergistic digestion and saccharification of alginate in biofuel production. The novel method for oligosaccharide sequencing described in this study will offer a very useful approach for structural and functional studies on alginate.

This study proposes a new technology for reducing residual stress using a combined magnetic–vibration treatment. To study the combined reduction effect of magnetic and vibration treatments, the independent reduction effects of vibration and magnetic technology were compared. To study the effect of vibration, magnetic, and combined magnetic-vibration treatments on the residual stress in silicon steel, the change in the mesoscopic structure was studied using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The microstructures of the materials were studied using residual stress measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and magnetic domain observations. The experimental results reveal that all three methods reduced the residual stress, among which the combined magnetic-vibration treatment was the best, and the effect of the composite treatment was greater than the sum of the effects of the individual treatments. All three methods reduced the residual stress by providing energy to increase the movement of dislocations in the material and cause dislocation slip. Compared with the other two methods, the combined magnetic-vibration treatment promoted the transformation of magnetic domains into uniform layered domains and excited dislocation movement in more regions to reduce residual stress. However, after all three types of reduction techniques, the mesoscopic structure, such as grain size and texture, was not significantly affected.

This study investigated the difference between the stress–magnetism relationships of ferromagnetic materials under tension and compression. Experimental results showed that the magnetic induction intensity of the ferromagnetic materials increased and decreased linearly with the increasing tensile and compressive stress, respectively, and that the response to tensile stress was more severe. The microstructural effect on the stress–magnetism relationship was studied. Experimental results showed that the difference in magnetic domain structure, grain size, and texture of materials were the important reasons for the different stress-magnetism relationships of different materials. The micromechanism of the stress–magnetism relationship was studied based on first-principles method. The calculation results showed that the atomic magnetic moment of the crystal structure increased and decreased with the increasing tensile and compressive stress, respectively. Moreover, the atomic magnetic moment responded more strongly to the variation in tensile stress, which was consistent with the macroscopic response. The results were explained by both levels in the band structure and the electronic density of states.

The effect of substrate on metallographic corrosion of cladding in stainless/carbon steel bimetal plate is investigated in this paper. The metallographic observation results show that the presence of substrate (carbon steel) would lead to the over-corrosion of stainless steel grain boundary, interfering with the metallographic observation results of stainless steel. The over-corrosion of stainless steel grain boundary could be attributed to the iron ion released from carbon steel. The excessive iron ion would enlarge the difference of iron ion concentration between etchant and stainless steel grain boundary, forming the concentration cell. The concentration cell would promote the localized corrosion of stainless steel, aggravating the corrosion degree of stainless steel.

In order to research the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of stainless/carbon steel bimetal plate, the annealing process at 700°C with different times was carried out for stainless/carbon steel bimetal plate. Because the carbon content of carbon steel was higher than that of stainless steel, the carbon would diffuse from carbon steel to stainless steel in the bimetal plate during the annealing process. The carbon diffusion would cause the thickness of the decarburized layer in carbon steel and the carbon content of stainless steel to increase. The carbon diffusion would be ongoing with the annealing process until the carbon content of stainless steel reached 0.08%. The higher carbon content could help in the formation of more chromium-depleted regions in the stainless steel surface, causing the stainless steel in the bimetal plate to have a poorer surface corrosion resistance than that of stainless steel under the same annealing conditions.

This paper investigated the flexible job-shop scheduling problem with the heat treatment process. To solve this problem, we built an unified mathematical model of the heat treatment process and machining process. Up to now, this problem has not been investigated much. Based on the features of this problem, we are intended to minimize Cmax, maximize the space utilization rate of heat treatment equipment, and minimize the total delay penalty to optimize the scheduling. By taking the dynamic process arrival under consideration, this paper proposed a set of decoding rules based on the heat treatment equipment volume and job delivery date to achieve a hybrid dynamic scheduling solution during one scheduling procedure. When the utilization rate of heat treatment equipment volume is maximized, and the job delivery date is taken under consideration, it is preferred to minimize the number of workpiece batches in the same job, and reduce the waiting time of the pending job. In combination with the improved adaptive non-dominated genetic algorithm, we worked out the solution. Furthermore, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed decoding rules and improved algorithm through algorithm comparison and calculation results. Finally, a software system for algorithm verification and algorithm comparison was developed to verify the validity of our proposed algorithm.

The interfacial fracture behavior of a stainless/carbon steel bimetal plate in a uniaxial tensile test was investigated in this paper. The ultrasonic C-scan results showed that the internal fracture had already appeared in the necking area before the tensile sample snapped, and the internal fracture occurred in the middle of the necking area and propagated with the tensile strain increase. The fractography showed that the internal fracture occurred at the interface between the diffusion layer and carburization stainless steel. The contribution of the internal stress to the interface fracture was analyzed by finite element method. The FEM results showed that, due to the different material mechanical properties, the large stress difference between the diffusion layer and the carburized stainless steel induced the interface shear stress. The shear stress value was related to the location and tensile strain, and when the stress difference was larger than 500 MPa, the interface would crack. Chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulfate (CS/DS) sulfatases are potential tools for structural and functional studies of CD/DS chains. In our previous study, a CS/DS 4-O-endosulfatase (endoVB4SF) was identified from a marine bacterium (Wang et al., 2015). Herein, another CS/DS 4-O-sulfatase (exoPB4SF) was identified from a Photobacterium sp. ExoPB4SF shares an 83% identity with endoVB4SF but showed strict exolytic activity. Comparative studies were performed for both enzymes on the basis of biochemical features, substrate-degrading patterns and three-dimensional structures. exoPB4SF exhibited a wider temperature and pH adaptability and better thermostability than endoVB4SF. Furthermore, exoPB4SF is a strict exolytic sulfatase that only releases the sulfate group from the GalNAc residue located at the reducing end, whereas endoVB4SF preferentially removed sulfate esters from the reducing end toward the non-reducing end though its directional degradation property was not strict. In addition, the structure of endoVB4SF was determined by X-ray crystallography at 1.95 Å. It adopts a globular conformation with two monomers per asymmetric unit. The exoPB4SF structure was constructed by homology modeling. Molecular docking results showed that although the residues around the catalytic center are conserved, the residues at the active site of endoVB4SF adopted a more favorable conformation for the binding of long CS/DS chains than those of exoPB4SF, which may explain why the two highly homogenous sulfatases possessed different action patterns. The results of this study provide insight into the structure-function relationship of CS/DS endo- and exosulfatases for the first time.

Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) sulfatases, which catalyze the hydrolysis of sulfate esters from GAGs, belong to a large and conserved sulfatase family. Bacterial GAG sulfatases are essential in the process of sulfur cycling and are useful for the structural analysis of GAGs. Only a few GAG-specific sulfatases have been studied in detail and reported to date. Herein, the GAG-degrading Photobacterium sp. FC615 was isolated from marine sediment, and a novel Δ4,5hexuronate-2-O-sulfatase (PB2SF) was identified from this bacterium. PB2SF specifically removed 2-O-sulfate from the unsaturated hexuronate residue located at the non-reducing end of GAG oligosaccharides produced by GAG lyases. A structural model of PB2SF was constructed through a homology-modeling method. Six conserved amino acids around the active site were chosen for further analysis using site-directed mutagenesis. N113A, K141A, K141H, H143A, H143K, H205A, and H205K mutants exhibited only feeble activity, while the H310A, H310K, and D52A mutants were totally inactive, indicating that these conserved residues, particularly Asp52 and His310, were essential in the catalytic mechanism. Furthermore, bioinformatic analysis revealed that GAG sulfatases with specific degradative properties clustered together in the neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree. Based on this finding, 60 Δ4,5hexuronate-2-O-sulfatases were predicted in the NCBI protein database, and one with relatively low identity to PB2SF was characterized to confirm our prediction. Moreover, the signature sequences of bacterial Δ4,5hexuronate-2-O-sulfatases were identified. With the reported signature motifs, the sulfatase sequence of the Δ4,5hexuronate-2-O-sulfatase family could be simply identified before cloning. Taken together, the results of this study should aid in the identification and further application of novel GAG sulfatases.

In this study, a method based on laser ultrasonic bulk waves is used to detect delamination in a bimetallic composite. For this purpose, several artificial delamination defects were created in a copper-aluminum sample using wire-electrode cutting. The research includes numerical simulation and experimental analysis. The propagation process of laser ultrasonic in Cu/Al bimetallic compo-site, the interaction between bulk waves and composite interface, and the effect of delamination defects on the ultrasound field were studied by numerical simulation. Suitable parameters and features were determined by numerical simulation, which provided a basis for the parameter se-lection of experimental research. The reflected shear waves from the composite interface can act as a sensitive feature to detect the delamination in Cu/Al bimetallic composites. The distance between the detection point and the excitation point was set to 2 mm to take into account the detection resolution and efficiency. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulation results, and the C-scan image can intuitively show the location and size of delamination defects. The detection method based on laser ultrasonic bulk waves can effectively detect the delamination in Cu/Al bimetallic composite, which is suitable for the on-line detection of the rolling composite process.

As food and beverages require more and more green and safe packaging products, the emergence of polymer coated steel (PCS) has been promoted. PCS is a layered composite strip made of metal and polymer. To probe the bonding mechanism of PCS micro-interface, the substrate tin-free steel (TFS) was physically characterized by SEM and XPS, and cladding polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was simulated by first-principles methods of quantum mechanics (QM). We used COMPASS force field for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. XPS pointed out that the element composition of TFS surface coating is Cr(OH)3, Cr2O3 and CrO3. The calculation results of MD and QM indicate that the chromium oxide and PET molecules compound in the form of acid-base interaction. The binding energies of Cr2O3 (110), (200), and (211) with PET molecules are −13.07 eV, −2.74 eV, and −2.37 eV, respectively. We established a Cr2O3 (200) model with different hydroxyl concentrations. It is proposed that the oxygen atom in C=O in the PET molecule combines with –OH on the surface of TFS to form a hydrogen bond. The binding energy of the PCS interface increases with the increase of the surface hydroxyl concentration of the TFS. It provides theoretical guidance and reference significance for the research on the bonding mechanism of PCS.

The elastic constants, ideal strength, band structure and electronic density state of Fe3Si (DO3) under triaxial tension and triaxial compression were studied using the first principle. The structural parameters calculated at zero pressure are consistent with the experimental results. The dependence of elastic constant and strain can be obtained using static finite strain technique. The ideal triaxial tensile and compressive strength of DO3 were studied by calculating the stress–strain relationship. The micro mechanism that affects the stability of the structure was analyzed using the results of electronic structure calculation. The results showed that the compressive strength of DO3 structure is higher than the tensile strength. When the stress of cell structure exceeds a limit, the covalent bond of Fe–Si is destroyed, resulting in the sudden decrease of G and E and the abnormal change of electronic density of state.

Finite element analysis was conducted on a thermally-aged cast duplex stainless steel based on the true three-dimensional (3D) microstructure obtained from X-ray microtomography experiments and using the constitutive behavior of each individual phase extracted from nanoindentation on single-crystal and bicrystal micropillar compression tests. The evolution of the phase morphology, the mechanical properties and the boundary deformation behavior during the aging process are highlighted. Quantitative analysis in terms of the distribution and evolution of the stress and strain in both the as received and aged conditions was performed. The experimental results show that aging at an intermediate temperature has a negligible influence on the morphology of the two phases in cast duplex stainless steel (CDSS). Results from simulations reveal that the mechanical behavior of this material were seriously affected by the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the individual phase and the necking deformation tend to form in the area with less large ferrite grains after aging. In addition, stress localization tends to form at the austenite/ferrite interface, in the narrow region of ferrite grains and in the small ferrite grains.

Z3CN20.09M cast duplex stainless steel (CDSS) has been used for primary coolant water pipes in pressurized water reactors due to its excellent mechanical properties. Such pipes operate at an elevated service temperature (~320 °C) and experience issues of thermal aging embrittlement. In situ tensile tests were conducted to investigate the deformation mechanisms of Z3CN20.09M CDSS after long-term thermal aging at 475 °C for up to 2000 h in both optical microscope and scanning electron microscope at 320 °C. For the 320 °C tests, the tensile stress and other mechanical properties, e.g. the yield stress and the ultimate tensile strength, increase during the thermal aging process and recover to almost the same level as the unaged condition after annealing heat-treatment, which is caused by the formation and dissolution of precipitation during aging and anneal heat-treatment, respectively. For the slip mechanism, straight slip lines form first in the austenite phase. When these slip lines reach the austenite/ferrite interface, three kinds of slip systems are found in the ferrite phase. During the fracture process, the austenite phase is torn apart and the ferrite phase shows a significant elongation. The role of the ferrite phase is to hold the austenite matrix, thus increasing the tensile strength of this steel.

The void closure mechanism during the roll-bonding process was investigated using a multiscale approach, which includes contact deformation at the macro-scale and atomic bonding at the micro-scale. The closure process of the voids was observed using roll-bonding tests of 304 stainless steel/Q235 carbon steel. A finite element model was built to simulate the macroscopic deformation process of 304/Q235 material, and a molecular dynamics model established to simulate the deformation process of the microscopic rough peaks. The closure law and mechanism of interface voids at the macro- and micro-scales were studied. The results show that the closure rate of interface voids decreases with the decrease in the average contact stress during the contact deformation process. In the atomic bonding process, the void closure rate is slow in the elastic deformation process. The ordered atoms near the interface become disordered as plastic deformation occurs, which increases the void closure rate and hinders dislocation propagation through the interface, resulting in significant strengthening effects via plastic deformation. Ultimately, a perfect lattice is reconstructed with void healing. In addition, the interface morphology after roll-bonding at the macro scale was determined by the morphology of the 304 steel with larger yield strength ratio, while the interface morphology at the micro-scale was mainly determined by the morphology of the Q235 steel with a higher yield strength.

In this study the microstructure and mechanical properties of stainless steel clad plate are researched. Due to element diffusion (Fe, Cr, Ni, Mn), a 20 μm thick diffusion layer is formed between stainless steel and carbon steel clad plate. The diffusion layer has a stable mechanical performance without obvious grain microstructure, and its internal mechanical properties show a graded change in the thickness direction. This is beneficial to a strong bond between stainless steel and carbon steel and the stable transition of mechanical performance in the thickness direction, as well as further carbon diffusion changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties near the diffusion layer of clad plate. Carburization stainless steel with a thickness of 150 μm is formed in the stainless steel side and decarburization carbon steel with a thickness of 80 μm is formed in the carbon steel side.

The interfacial bonding process and mechanical properties of AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) stainless steel/Q235A carbon steel were investigated by deformation bonding, heat preservation, and tensile tests. The results reveal that the deformation temperature has a beneficial effect on the bonding rate, and that the critical temperature for the large-area bonding of stainless steel and carbon steel is approximately 700 °C. However, owing to the short contact time, only a shallow diffusion of approximately 2–3 µm can be achieved. A slight decrease in the interfacial bonding rate after heat preservation is correlated to the difference between the thermal expansion coefficients of the two materials, but the thickness of the diffusion layer shows a significant increase. It was found that the strength of the composites is mostly related to the bonding rate and the strength of the relatively soft material, which can be determined using an explicit equation. Moreover, with the increase in the interfacial bonding rate, the crack source changes from the junction of the unbonded and bonded areas of the interface to the interior of the carbon steel. The failure mode evolves from cleavage brittle fracture to ductile–brittle mixed-mode fracture, and then to ductile fracture.

This paper reported the utilization of water spray for controlling H2S release in a confined space, which is especially important in industry. A typical spray tower was modified to simulate the confined space for people's enterable routine operation (e.g., pump room), in which the dilution capacity of water sprays can also be evaluated. This work consists of two parts: the first part focuses on the influences of different operating conditions on chemical dilution capacities of water sprays in mechanisms; the second one is comparison between two nozzle configurations for evaluating their feasibilities of practical application. Water sprays express eligible performance for H2S release control even though their dilution capacity was weakened at high gaseous concentrations and rates of releases. The presence of Na2CO3 can significantly improve absorption effectiveness of H2S in water and the optimal Na2CO3 additive was found to be 1.0 g·L−1 in this test. Compared with Na2CO3, adjusting water flow rate may be an effective strategy in enhancing dilution capacity of water sprays due to the fact that larger flow rate led to both less dilution time (TD) and dilution concentration (CD). Furthermore, multinozzle configuration is more efficient than single-nozzle configuration under the same water consumption.

For the deficiencies of traditional stress detection methods for steel strips in industrial production, this paper proposes a non-contact stress detection scheme based on the magnetoelastic effect. The theoretical model of the transmission-type stress detection is established, in which the output voltage and the tested stress obey a linear relation. Then, a stress detection device is built for the experiment, and Q235 steel under uniaxial tension is tested as an example. The result shows that the output voltage rises linearly with the increase of the tensile stress, consistent with the theoretical prediction. To ensure the accuracy of the stress detection method in actual application, the temperature compensation, magnetic shielding and some other key technologies are investigated to reduce the interference of the external factors, such as environment temperature and surrounding magnetic field. The present research develops the theoretical and experimental foundations for the magnetic stress detection system, which can be used for online non-contact monitoring of strip flatness-related stress (tension distribution or longitudinal residual stress) in the steel strip rolling process, the quality evaluation of strip flatness after rolling, the life and safety assessment of metal construction and other industrial production links.
