Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CHD) has a high incidence, disability rate, and mortality rate, which severely affect people's health, work, and life. Based on its clinical manifestations, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has classified CHD as “chest impediment” and “heart pain” for the treatment. The course of CHD is protracted, and the pathogenesis is complex and changeable. Moreover, different disease stages have different syndrome characteristics. Thus, this article aimed to summarize the classification and distribution characteristics of the TCM syndrome in various stages of CHD, such as before and after percutaneous coronary intervention therapy, disease progression, age, and complications, to provide references for the TCM clinical diagnosis and treatment of CHD.

Structuring elements of fixed shape and size are used in most conventional mathematical morphology operations, which makes the border of image targets shift, produces new image artifacts and loses small image objects due to the diversity and complexity of the image targets. In this paper, a new construction algorithm for adaptive structuring elements is proposed based on the neighborhood gray difference changing vector field and relative density. The proposed structuring element is able to adaptively change shape according to the gray and edge characteristics of an image. This algorithm involves first incorporating the gray difference changing vector field to smooth the local image region and make the gray level within the image target more uniform and then defining a border degree function based on relative density to determine whether the center pixel of the local image region is a border pixel. The adaptive structuring element is composed of all the strong border pixels found in a local image region. Dilation and erosion operations and other derivative operations are proposed with this new adaptive structuring element based on conventional morphology operation principles. The experimental results show that this proposed algorithm is able to effectively suppress the shifting effect of the image target borders while accurately locating the border of the image target region. Additionally, other effective image information is retained and image distortion is reduced while weakening the image details.

Objective The incidence of cancer varies around the globe, especially between less-developed and developed regions. The aim of this study is to explore differences in cancer incidence between China and the USA.Methods Data were obtained from the GLOBOCAN 2008 database. Estimated numbers of new cancer cases in the USA were obtained from the American Cancer Society, while the numbers of cases in China, including those in urban and rural areas, were obtained from 36 cancer registries (2003-2005). Cancer incidence for major sites between China and the USA were analyzed. Results In China, lung cancer was the predominant type of cancer detected in males; in females, breast cancer was the main type of cancer. Gastrointestinal cancers, such as those of the liver, stomach, and esophagus, were more commonly seen in China than in the USA. A significant difference in the incidence of melanoma of the skin was observed between China and the USA. During comparison of differences in the age-standardized rates by world population (ASRWs) of major cancer sites between the two countries, 4 sites in males (i.e., nasopharynx, esophagus, stomach, and liver) and 6 sites in females (i.e., nasopharynx, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, and cervix uteri) showed higher cancer incidence rates in China than in the USA.Conclusions Significant differences in cancer incidence sites were found between the two countries. Cancer may be prevented through public education and awareness. Programs to promote cancer prevention in China, especially those of the lung, breast, and gastrointestinal region, must also be implemented.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the correlation between triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and in-hospital mortality in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). METHODS: A total of 2190 patients with STEMI who underwent primary angiography within 12 h from symptom onset were selected from the prospective, nationwide, multicenter CAMI registry. TyG index was calculated with the formula: Ln [fasting triglycerides (mmol/L) × fasting glucose (mmol/L)/2]. Patients were divided into three groups according to the tertiles of TyG index. The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: Overall, 46 patients died during hospitalization, in-hospital mortality was 1.5%, 2.2%, 2.6% for tertile 1, tertile 2, and tertile 3, respectively. However, TyG index was not significantly correlated with in-hospital mortality in single-variable logistic regression analysis. Nonetheless, after adjusting for age and sex, TyG index was significantly associated with higher mortality when regarded as a continuous variable (adjusted OR = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.16-2.63) or categorical variable (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1: adjusted OR = 2.50, 95% CI: 1.14-5.49). Furthermore, TyG index, either as a continuous variable (adjusted OR = 2.54, 95% CI: 1.42-4.54) or categorical variable (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1: adjusted OR = 3.57, 95% CI: 1.24-10.29), was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for multiple confounders in multivariable logistic regression analysis. In subgroup analysis, the prognostic effect of high TyG index was more significant in patients with body mass index < 18.5 kg/m(2) (P(interaction) = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that TyG index was positively correlated with in-hospital mortality in STEMI patients who underwent primary angiography, especially in underweight patients.

Objective. To analyze the characteristics of pulse graph parameters in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) varied at different body mass index (BMI) levels and to provide pulse diagnosis basis for syndrome differentiation and treatment of PCOS. Methods. Pulse graph parameters of 152 patients with PCOS (26 lean patients, 63 patients with moderate weight, and 63 overweight patients) were measured by a Z-BOX pulse meter, and the pulse graph parameters of patients with PCOS varied at different BMI levels were analyzed. Results. Fine pulse, slippery pulse, and string-like pulse were the most common pulse conditions in patients with PCOS. The common pulse conditions of patients with PCOS varied at different BMI levels. The order of pulse conditions was as follows: lean group: fine pulse > string-like pulse > slippery pulse; moderate group: fine pulse > slippery pulse > string-like pulse; and overweight group: slippery pulse > fine pulse > sunken pulse. Compared to the overweight group, the pulse graph parameters h1, h3, h4, h5, h4/h1, As, and Ad increased in the moderate group ( P < 0.05 ), and the parameters h1, h3, and Ad increased ( P < 0.05 ) and the parameter t1 decreased ( P < 0.05 ) in the lean group. Conclusion. Pulse graph parameters among patients with PCOS varied at different BMI levels, which can probably provide pulse diagnosis basis for syndrome differentiation and treatment of PCOS by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Background: To evaluate the role of nimotuzumab in combination with chemotherapy in patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) through progress-free survival, changes in tumor marker expression and adverse drug reactions. Materials and Methods: A total of 59 NSCLC patients were randomized into two groups. The treatment group (n = 30) received nimotuzumab (200 mg) with docetaxel (60 mg/m 2 ) and carboplatin (area under curve = 5), whereas the control group (n = 29) received chemotherapy at the same dosage. All patients received two cycles of treatment lasting for 42 days. The serum tumor biomarker levels were measured on the day before treatment and at 60 days after treatment. Results: The efficacy of treatment for the treatment and control groups were 36.7% and 27.6%, respectively; this difference was not statistically significant. However, progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly prolonged by 1 month in the treatment group. Peripheral blood CYFRA21-1 decreased significantly during treatment with a more extensive decrease in the treatment group, although the difference between the groups was not statistically significant. The neuron-specific enolase levels significantly decreased across all 59 patients. The carcinoembryonic antigen levels decreased significantly in the treatment group, but remained stable in the control group throughout the treatment period. Nimotuzumab was well tolerated by patients with only three cases of Grades I and II skin rash and no other toxic symptoms. Conclusion: Nimotuzumab with docetaxel and carboplatin can enhance the short-term clinical efficacy by extending the duration of PFS and was generally well tolerated by patients.

To evaluate the efficacy of nimotuzumab combined with palitaxel liposome and carboplatin (LP) regimen for treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and to observe the changes of tumor markers and toxicities in the treatment. METHODS Forty-one patients with advanced NSCLC were randomly divided into 2 groups: 21 patients in the observation group were treated with nimotuzumab (200 mg per week for 6 weeks), palitaxel liposome 160 mg/m2 and carboplatin (AUC = 6). 20 patients in the control group were given LP regimen. Each group completed two cycles of chemotherapy. The level of tumor markers (CEA, CYFR21-1 and NSE) and toxicities were checked at one week before and after the treatment. Thoracic CT examinations were taken before treatment and at the fourth week and eighth week after treatment. In the observation group, there were 2 cases of CR, 7 cases of PR, 9 cases of SD and 3 cases of PD. The objective response rate (RR) was 42. 9% in the observation group. In the control group, there were 1 case of CR, 6 cases of PR, 8 cases of SD and 5 cases of PD, with a RR of 35.0% in this group. There was no significant difference in the RR between the two groups (P = 0.751). The time to progression (TIP) was 6. 9 months in the observation group and 5. 7 months in the control group, with a significant difference (P = 0.027). The levels of NSE decreased significantly in both groups and showed a significant difference (P = 0.039). The levels of CEA and CYFRA21 in both groups were decreased after treatment, but did not show a significant difference before and after treatment, respectively. Except 3 cases had I-II skin toxicities on the faces in the observation group, there was no significant difference in toxicities between the two groups.Nimotuzmab combined with LP regimen shows a synergistic effect, can increase the efficacy and prolong TFP in advanced NSCLC patients. The toxicities are mild and tolerable.

Background. Cancer rates in immigrant populations are frequently found to be intermediate between the country of origin and the adopted country. Such observations play an important role in establishing the environmental origin of cancer. Chinese now constitute the third largest group immigrating to New York City. Methods. Cancer deaths in New York City (1986–90) among 706 male and 412 female foreign-born Chinese were compared using proportional cancer mortality ratios (PCMR) with Chinese who died of cancer in Tianjin, China (19,461 deaths, 1983–87), and with United States-born whites in New York City (32,293 deaths). Results. Cancer sites were divided into those for which the age-adjusted PCMR were significantly higher in Tianjin Chinese (TC) compared with New York City whites (NYW), and those for which PCMR were significantly lower in TC compared with NYW. PCMR for Chinese immigrants usually fell between those of TC and NYW, but some were closer to those of TC (e.g., liver, gallbladder, female lung) whereas other sites were closer to those of NYW (e.g., esophagus, colon, rectum). Conclusions. These data provide additional support for the concept that much cancer originates with and can be modified by environmental factors. Cancer 1994; 73:1270–5.

To evaluate the efficacy of Endosteal(TM) (rh-endostatin, YH-16) combined with docetaxel and carboplatin (TP) regimen for the adjuvant treatment of non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) and its impact on circulating blood markers.36 patients with stage Ib-IIIa postoperative NSCLC, were randomly divided into the treatment group, Endosteal(TM) plus TP regimen, and the control group, TP regimen only, respectively. DFS and toxicities of patients were observed. The numbers of CEC and the levels of tumor marker CEA, NSE and CYFR21-1 were measured. The numbers of CEC and the levels of CEA, NSE and CYFR21-1 decreased after treatment. There were significant differences in CEC and NSE between treatment group and control group after four cycles of treatment, respectively (P = 0.016 and 0.013). Disease-free survival time (DFS) was longer in treatment group than control group but without significant difference. CEC was significantly increased in recurrent and metastasis cases and decreased after effective treatment.Endosteal(TM) combined with TP regimen seem to be superior to TP alone in some short term index for the treatment of postoperative NSCLC even though long-term survival is still anticipated. CEC, as a biomarker, may be useful in predicting the efficacy of the such synergistic treatment.

To investigate the risk factors of lung cancer in Tianjin and to provide evidence for further monitor there of.A case-control study involving interviews with 193 new cases and 259 controls aged 30 - 76 years was carried out. Structured questionnaires were used to collect information on general condition, living environment, living style, disease and family history, etc. Logistic regression model univariate and multivariate analysis were used to pick out the significant lung cancer risk factors.By monovariate analysis, risk factors such as smoking, passive smoking, drinking, history of malignancy in family and occupation were found. By multivariate analysis, smoking, passive smoking, higher body mass index (BMI) and average income and living space per capita ten years earlier were ascertained, their operations research (OR) values were 3.302, 1.193, 1.003, 1.067 and 0.913.Smoking and passive smoking are independent risk factors of lung cancer. Monthly income per person and living space per person 10 years earlier are associated with elevated risk of lung cancer. Higher body mass index has protective effects on lung cancer risk.

A series of 45 high-risk breast cancer patients, consisting of 25 affected individuals from 16 families in China with at least two cases of breast cancer and 20 cases of breast cancer diagnosed under age 35 without reported family history, were studied for germline mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Thirteen of the 16 families contained at leas t one case diagnosed under age 50. Three distinct protein truncating sequence variants, likely to be disease–associated, were identified: two novel mutations in BRCA1 (1584G>T and 5028delC), and a previously reported mutation in BRCA2 (7883delTTAA). Additional sequence variants identified included common polymorphisms, and several variants of unknown clinical significance, including a novel BRCA1 alteration. Based on models for predictive testing using allele frequencies and risks estimated in Western populations, our results suggest that BRCA1/2 mutations account for a somewhat smaller fraction of breast cancer cases in Tianjin than in the Caucasian populations studied. This difference could be the result of a lower penetrance of BRCA1/2 mutations due to the surrounding environmental and hormonal milieu, or a lower frequency of mutations in this population. Larger, more detailed, studies will be necessary to determine which factors underlie this difference. © 2002 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

This article has been removed: please see Elsevier Policy on Article Withdrawal (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/withdrawalpolicy).This abstract has been removed at the request of the Editor-in-Chief and author because it contains a drug dosage error which could have serious health consequences. The abstract contained a dosage error for the drug, docetaxel. The corrected abstract should read as follows:Background: We evaluated the efficacy of nimotuzumab combined with docetaxel and carboplatin (TP) for treatment of advanced non-small-cell-lung-cancer (NSCLC), as well as the effect on circulating blood markers and patient's side-effects.Methods: 21 patients with advanced NSCLC were enrolled in the study. Patients were given nimotuzumab (200 mg/week for 6 weeks) and DP regimen (60 mg/m2 docetaxel and 400 mg/m2 carboplatin, twice). Each patient had two cycles of chemotherapy. Response data was collected before and after treatment. Tumour size and reduction were recorded by thoracic CT scan and compared. Treatment related side-effects were compared by statistical methods.Findings: Tumour size and levels of CEA, NSE, and CYFR21-1 were decreased after treatment (p=0.01, p=0.02, p=0.03). Four patients had a complete response, five had a partial response, nine had stable disease, and three had progressive disease. Three patients had side-effects on facial skin and were graded as stage I-II disease.Interpretation: Nimotuzumab combined with DP regimen may increase the efficacy of treatment, with few side-effects.Funding: Beijing Science Plan. The authors declared no conflicts of interest.

The dietary habits, occupational exposures, use of tobacco and alcohol, and medical history were compared among 100 patients with histologically confirmed nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in Tianjin City, People's Republic of China, and 300 neighborhood controls who were individually matched to the patients with regard to age (within 5 yr), sex, and race (Han). Exposure to salted fish was significantly associated with an increased risk of NPC. Four characteristics of exposure to salted fish independently contributed to the increased risk: (a) earlier age at first exposure, (b) increasing duration of consumption, (c) increasing frequency of consumption, and (d) cooking the fish by steaming it rather than frying, grilling, or boiling it. In addition, significant associations were observed for consumption in childhood of salted shrimp paste (increased risk) and carrots (reduced risk), and the three dietary effects (i.e., those from consumption of salted fish, salted shrimp paste, and carrots) were independent of each other. None of the non-dietary factors studied were significantly associated with NPC risk.

- Abstract
The article presents a study on the effect of swimming on retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of liver and adipose tissue of rats with type 2 diabetes. It notes that type 2 diabetic rats are divided into three groups and are fed with high fat, high-sugar diet. Results show the increase on RBP4 mRNA expression of control group compared with the group of healthy Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. The decrease on RBP4 mRNA expression of the swimming group is also noted.
