We look into the 2851 $^{12}$CO molecular clouds harboring $^{13}$CO structures to reveal the distribution of the projected angular separations and radial velocity separations between their internal $^{13}$CO structures. The projected angular separations are determined using the minimal spanning tree algorithm. We find that $\sim$ 50$\%$ of the angular separations fall in a narrow range of $\sim$ 3 - 7 arcmin with a median of $\sim$ 5 arcmin, and the corresponding radial velocity separations mainly range from $\sim$ 0.3 km s$^{-1}$ to 2.5 km s$^{-1}$. The mean and standard deviation of the angular separations of the internal $^{13}$CO structures within $^{12}$CO clouds appear to be universal, independent of the $^{12}$CO cloud angular areas and the counts of their internal $^{13}$CO structures. We also reveal a scaling relation between the $^{12}$CO cloud angular area and its harbored $^{13}$CO structure count. These results suggest there is a preferred angular separation between $^{13}$CO structures in these $^{12}$CO clouds, considering the distance effects. According to that, we propose an alternative picture for the assembly and destruction of molecular clouds: there is a fundamental separation for the internal structures of molecular clouds, the build-up and destruction of molecular clouds proceeds under this fundamental unit., 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In this work, we investigate the observational and algorithmic effects on molecular cloud samples identified from position-position-velocity (PPV) space. By smoothing and cutting off the high quality data of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) survey, we extract various molecular cloud samples from those altered data with the DBSCAN (density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise) algorithm. Those molecular cloud samples are subsequently used to gauge the significance of sensitivity, angular/velocity resolution, and DBSCAN parameters. Two additional surveys, the FCRAO Outer Galaxy Survey (OGS) and the CfA-Chile 1.2 m complete CO (CfA-Chile) survey, are used to verify the MWISP results. We found that molecular cloud catalogs are not unique and the boundary and therefore the number shows strong variation with angular resolution and sensitivity. At low angular resolution (large beam sizes), molecular clouds merge together in PPV space, while low sensitivity (high cutoffs) misses small faint molecular clouds and takes bright parts of large molecular clouds as single ones. At high angular resolution and sensitivity, giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are resolved into individual clouds, and their diffuse components are also revealed. Consequently, GMCs are more appropriately interpreted as clusters or aggregates of molecular clouds, i.e., GMCs represent molecular cloud samples themselves., 25 pages, 21 figures. Based on the MWISP survey, we study high-z CO emission toward the tangent points, in which the distances of the molecular clouds (MCs) are well determined. In the region of l=12-26 deg and |b| 110 pc are identified, of which nearly 30 extreme high-z MCs (EHMCs at |z|> 260 pc) are concentrated in a narrow region of R_GC=2.6-3.1 kpc. The EHMC concentrations, together with other high-z MCs at R_GC=2.3-2.6 kpc, constitute molecular crater-wall structures surrounding the edges of the HI voids that are physically associated with the Fermi bubbles. Intriguingly, some large high-z MCs, which lie in the crater walls above and below the Galactic plane, show cometary structures with the head toward the plane, favouring the scenario that the entrained molecular gas moves with the multi-phase flows from the plane to the high-z regions. We suggest that the Milky Way nuclear wind has a significant impact on the Galactic gaseous disk. We present wide-field multi-wavelength observations of $\gamma$ Cassiopeiae (or $\gamma$~Cas for short) in order to study its feedback toward the interstellar environment. A large expanding cavity is discovered toward $\gamma$~Cas in the neutral hydrogen (HI) images at a systemic velocity of about -10 km/s. The measured dimension of the cavity is roughly 2.0 deg $\times$ 1.4 deg (or 6.0 pc $\times$ 4.2 pc at a distance of 168 pc), while the expansion velocity is about 5.0$\pm$0.5 km/s. The CO observations reveal systematic velocity gradients in IC63 (about 20 km/s/pc) and IC59 (about 30 km/s/pc), two cometary globules illuminated by $\gamma$~Cas, proving fast acceleration of the globules under stellar radiation pressure. The gas kinematics indicate that the cavity is opened by strong stellar wind, which has high potential to lead to the peculiar X-ray emission observed in $\gamma$~Cas. We present large-scale (2° × 2°) observations toward the molecular cloud M120.1+3.0, using 12CO, 13CO and C18O (J = 1 − 0) data from the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7 m millimeter telescope. The distance of the cloud is measured to be ∼1.1 kpc. Using the 13CO data, we identify a main filament F1 and two sub-filaments F2 and F3 in the cloud, which together show a “hub-filament” structure. Filaments F1 and F2 are thermally supercritical. Furthermore, F1 displays clear localized systematic motions in the 13CO position–velocity diagram, which could be explained by accretion along the filament. The mean estimated accretion rate is ∼132 M ⊙ Myr−1. Approximately 150 13CO clumps are identified in the cloud, of which 39 are gravitationally bound. Most of these virialized clumps are well distributed along the supercritical filaments F1 and F2. Based on the complementary infrared and optical data, we identify ∼186 young stellar objects in the observed area and extract five clusters within the dense ridge of F1. The calculated star formation rate (SFR) surface densities (ΣSFR) in the clusters range from 1.4 to 2.5 M ⊙ Myr−1 pc−2, with a mean value of ∼2.0 M ⊙ Myr−1 pc−2. We therefore regard them as mini-starburst cluster candidates. The comparison between ΣSFR and column density N gas along the skeleton of F1 suggests that star formation is closely related to the dense gas in the cloud. Along the main filament F1, five bipolar outflows are also found. All these results indicate intense star-forming activities in the M120.1+3.0 molecular cloud.

Noise is a significant part within a millimeter-wave molecular line datacube. Analyzing the noise improves our understanding of noise characteristics, and further contributes to scientific discoveries. We measure the noise level of a single datacube from MWISP and perform statistical analyses. We identified major factors which increase the noise level of a single datacube, including bad channels, edge effects, baseline distortion and line contamination. Cleaning algorithms are applied to remove or reduce these noise components. As a result, we obtained the cleaned datacube in which noise follows a positively skewed normal distribution. We further analyzed the noise structure distribution of a 3D mosaicked datacube in the range l = 40 ⋅ ° 7 to 43 ⋅ ° 3 and b = − 2 ⋅ ° 3 to 0 ⋅ ° 3 and found that noise in the final mosaicked datacube is mainly characterized by noise fluctuation among the cells.

After the morphological classification of the 18,190 $^{12}$CO molecular clouds, we further investigate the properties of their internal molecular gas structures traced by the $^{13}$CO($J=$ 1$-$0) line emissions. Using three different methods to extract the $^{13}$CO gas structures within each $^{12}$CO cloud, we find that $\sim$ 15$\%$ of $^{12}$CO clouds (2851) have $^{13}$CO gas structures and these $^{12}$CO clouds contribute about 93$\%$ of the total integrated flux of $^{12}$CO emission. In each of 2851 $^{12}$CO clouds with $^{13}$CO gas structures, the $^{13}$CO emission area generally does not exceed 70$\%$ of the $^{12}$CO emission area, and the $^{13}$CO integrated flux does not exceed 20$\%$ of the $^{12}$CO integrated flux. We reveal a strong correlation between the velocity-integrated intensities of $^{12}$CO lines and those of $^{13}$CO lines in both $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO emission regions. This indicates the H$_{2}$ column densities of molecular clouds are crucial for the $^{13}$CO lines emission. After linking the $^{13}$CO structure detection rates of the 18,190 $^{12}$CO molecular clouds to their morphologies, i.e. nonfilaments and filaments, we find that the $^{13}$CO gas structures are primarily detected in the $^{12}$CO clouds with filamentary morphologies. Moreover, these filaments tend to harbor more than one $^{13}$CO structure. That demonstrates filaments not only have larger spatial scales, but also have more molecular gas structures traced by $^{13}$CO lines, i.e. the local gas density enhancements. Our results favor the turbulent compression scenario for filament formation, in which dynamical compression of turbulent flows induces the local density enhancements. We report the global properties recovered by an ongoing CO survey of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) toward the Galactic outskirts. %To better understand the observational biases, Our results are also compared to those extracted by a uniform decomposition method from the CfA 1.2 m CO survey and the FCRAO 14 m outer Galaxy survey (OGS). We find that more extended and unseen structures are present in the MWISP data. The total flux across the disk recovered by the MWISP survey is 1.6 times larger than those recovered by the CfA and OGS surveys in the case of the same resolution. The discrepancies are scaling with distance. For example, in the outermost OSC arm, the flux ratios for MWISP-to-CfA and MWISP-to-OGS increase up to 43.8 and 7.4, respectively. Located at a distance of about 300 pc, Perseus OB2 (or Per~OB2 for short) is one of the major OB associations in the solar vicinity\cite{Zeeuw99,Belikov2002}, which has blown a supershell with a diameter of about 15 degree seen in the atomic hydrogen line surveys\cite{Sancisi1974,Heiles1984,Hartmann1997}. It was long considered that stellar feedback from the Per~OB2 association had formed a superbubble that swept up the surrounding interstellar medium into the observed supershell\cite{Bally2008}. Here we report the three-dimensional structure of the Per~OB2 superbubble, based on wide-field atomic hydrogen and molecular gas (traced by CO) surveys. The measured diameter of the superbubble is roughly 330 pc. Multiple atomic hydrogen shells/loops with expansion velocities of about 10 km/s are revealed in the superbubble, suggesting a complicated evolution history of the superbubble. Furthermore, the inspections of the morphology, kinematics and timescale of the Taurus-Auriga, California, and Perseus molecular clouds shows that the cloud complex is a super molecular cloud loop circling around and co-expanding with the Per~OB2 superbubble. We conclude that the Taurus-Auriga-California-Perseus loop, the largest star-forming molecular cloud complex in the solar neighborhood, is formed from the feedback of the Per~OB2 superbubble.

We attempt to visually classify the morphologies of 18190 molecular clouds, which are identified in the $^{12}$CO(1-0) spectral line data over $\sim$ 450 deg$^{2}$ of the second Galactic quadrant from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting project (MWISP). Using the velocity-integrated intensity maps of the $^{12}$CO(1-0) emission, molecular clouds are first divided into unresolved and resolved ones. The resolved clouds are further classified as non-filaments or filaments. Among the 18190 molecular clouds, $\sim$ 25 $\%$ are unresolved, $\sim$ 64$\%$ are non-filaments, and $\sim$ 11$\%$ are filaments. In the terms of the integrated flux of $^{12}$CO(1-0) spectra of the whole 18190 molecular clouds, $\sim$ 90$\%$ are from filaments, $\sim$ 9$\%$ are from non-filaments, and the rest $\sim$ 1$\%$ are from unresolved sources. Although non-filaments are dominant in the number of the discrete molecular clouds, filaments are the main contributor of $^{12}$CO emission flux. We also present the number distributions of physical parameters of the molecular clouds in our catalog, including their angular sizes, velocity spans, peak intensities of $^{12}$CO(1-0) emission, and $^{12}$CO(1-0) total fluxes. We find that there is a systematic difference between the angular sizes of the non-filaments and filaments, with the filaments tending to have larger angular scales. The H$_{2}$ column densities of them are not significantly different. Imaging surveys of CO and other molecular transition lines are fundamental to measuring the large-scale distribution of molecular gas in the Milky Way. Due to finite angular resolution and sensitivity, however, observational effects are inevitable in the surveys, but few studies are available on the extent of uncertainties involved. The purpose of this work is to investigate the dependence of observations on angular resolution (beam sizes), sensitivity (noise levels), distances, and molecular tracers. To this end, we use high-quality CO images of a large-scale region (25.8, Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results of a ~250 square degrees CO mapping (+26d4.1x10^5 Msun in the whole region. In fact, the mass of the molecular gas is dominated by the W40 giant molecular cloud (GMC) at ~474 pc (~1.4x10^5 Msun) and the GMC complex G036.0+01.0 at ~560-670 pc (~2.0x10^5 Msun), while the MCs at ~220-260pc have gas masses of 10^2-10^3 Msun. Interestingly, an ~80pc long filamentary MC G044.0-02.5 at a distance of ~404 pc shows a systematic velocity gradient along and perpendicular to the major axis of the filament. The HI gas with the enhanced emission has the similar spatial morphologies and velocity features compared to the corresponding CO structure, indicating that the large-scale converging HI flows are probably responsible for the formation of the MC. A study on the CO 12 , CO 13 , and C18O lines of the high Galactic latitude cloud HSVMT 27, located in Ursa Major, was conducted. A relatively low CO 12 excitation temperature was found. While some C18O emissions were detected, they were too weak to be mapped. With the spatial resolution of 0.08 pc and the velocity resolution of 0.17 km·s−1, 26 CO 13 cores were identified in the dense regions. All the local thermodynamic equilibrium masses of these cores are less than their Virial masses, ranging in 0.5–10 M⊙, and have no infrared point sources associated with them. Overall, the data indicate that there is no recent or ongoing star formation in this cloud.

The principle of the background-eliminated extinction-parallax (BEEP) method is examining the extinction difference between on- and off-cloud regions to reveal the extinction jump caused by molecular clouds, thereby revealing the distance in complex dust environments. The BEEP method requires high-quality images of molecular clouds and high-precision stellar parallaxes and extinction data, which can be provided by the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) CO survey and the Gaia DR2 catalog, as well as supplementary AV extinction data. In this work, the BEEP method is further improved (BEEP-II) to measure molecular cloud distances in a global search manner. Applying the BEEP-II method to three regions mapped by the MWISP CO survey, we collectively measured 238 distances for 234 molecular clouds. Compared with previous BEEP results, the BEEP-II method measures distances efficiently, particularly for those molecular clouds with large angular size or in complicated environments, making it suitable for distance measurements of molecular clouds in large samples., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 17 pages, 8 figures

We present a new method of calculating distances of molecular clouds in the Galactic plane, using CO observations and the Gaia DR2 parallax and G-band extinction ($A_G$) measurements. Due to the complexity of dust environments in the Galactic plane, $A_G$ contains irregular variations, which is difficult to model. To overcome this difficulty, we propose that the $A_G$ of off-cloud stars (Gaia stars around molecular clouds) can be used as a baseline to calibrate the $A_G$ of on-cloud stars (Gaia stars toward molecular clouds), which removes the $A_G$ components that are unrelated to molecular clouds. The distance is subsequently inferred from the jump point in on-cloud $A_G$ with Bayesian analysis and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling. We applied this baseline subtraction method to a 100 square degree region (209.75{\deg} $\leq$ l $\leq$ 219.75{\deg} and |b| $\leq$ 5{\deg}) in the third Galactic quadrant, which was mapped as part of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project, covering three CO isotopologue lines, and derived distances and masses for 11 molecular clouds, including the Maddalena molecular cloud and Sh 2-287. Using the Purple Mountain Observatory Delingha 13.7 m telescope, we conducted a large-scale $^{12}$CO $\left(J=1 \rightarrow 0\right)$ outflow survey (over $\sim$ 110 deg$^2$) toward the W3/4/5 complex and its surroundings. In total, 459 outflow candidates were identified. Approximately 62\% (284) were located in the Perseus arm, including W3/4/5 complex and its surroundings, while $\sim$ 35\% (162) were located in the Local arm, $\sim$ 1\% (5) in the Outer arm, and $\sim$ 2\% (8) in two interarm regions. This result indicated that star formation was concentrated in the Galactic spiral arms. The detailed spatial distribution of the outflow candidates showed that the Perseus arm presented the most active star formation among the study regions. The W3/4/5 complex is a great region to research massive star formation in a triggered environment. A key region, which has been well-studied by other researches, is in the eastern high-density W3 complex that neighbors the W4 complex. Two shell-like structures in the Local arm contain candidates that can be used to study the impact on star formation imposed by massive or intermediate-mass stars in relatively isolated systems. We use the ~370 square degrees data from the MWISP CO survey to study the vertical distribution of the molecular clouds (MCs) toward the tangent points in the region of l=[16,52]deg and |b|100pc from the Galactic plane. However, only a few samples (i.e., 32 MCs) are located in the |z|>360pc region. Typically, the discrete MCs of the thick disk population have a median peak temperature of 2.1 K, a median velocity dispersion of 0.8km/s, and a median effective radius of 2.5pc. The median surface density of these MCs is 6.8 Msun/pc^2, indicating very faint CO emission for these high-z MCs. The cloud-cloud velocity dispersion is 4.9+-1.3 km/s and a linear variation with a slope of -0.4 km/s/kpc is obtained in the region of R_GC=2.2-6.4kpc. Assuming that these clouds are supported by their turbulent motions against the gravitational pull of the disk, a model of rho0(R) = 1.28exp(-R/3.2kpc) Msun/pc^3 can be used to describe the distribution of the total mass density in the Galactic midplane., 29 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables (2021, ApJ, 910, 131)

We present new criteria for selecting HII regions from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) Point Source catalogue (PSC), based on an HII region catalogue derived manually from the all-sky Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The criteria are used to augment the number of HII region candidates in the Milky Way. The criteria are defined by the linear decision boundary of two samples: IRAS point sources associated with known HII regions, which serve as the HII region sample, and IRAS point sources at high Galactic latitudes, which serve as the non-HII region sample. A machine learning classifier, specifically a support vector machine (SVM), is used to determine the decision boundary. We investigate all combinations of four IRAS bands and suggest that the optimal criterion is log(F$_{\rm 60}$/F$_{\rm 12}$)$\ge$(-0.19$\times$log(F$_{\rm 100}$/F$_{\rm 25}$)+ 1.52), with detections at 60 and 100 micron. This selects 3041 HII region candidates from the IRAS PSC. We find that IRAS HII region candidates show evidence of evolution on the two-colour diagram. Merging the WISE HII catalogue with IRAS HII region candidates, we estimate a lower limit of approximately 10200 for the number of HII regions in the Milky Way., MNRAS, Accepted. 11 pages, 7 figures

We report the distances of molecular clouds at high Galactic latitudes (|b|>10$^\circ$) derived from parallax and G band extinction (A$_{\rm G}$) measurements in the second Gaia data release, Gaia DR2. Aided by Bayesian analyses, we determined distances by identifying the breakpoint in the extinction A$_{\rm G}$ towards molecular clouds and using the extinction A$_{\rm G}$ of Gaia stars around molecular clouds to confirm the breakpoint. We use nearby star-forming regions, such as Orion, Taurus, Cepheus, and Perseus, whose distances are well-known to examine the reliability of our method. By comparing with previous results, we found that the molecular cloud distances derived from this method are reliable. The systematic error in the distances is approximately 5%. In total, 52 molecular clouds have their distances well determined, most of which are at high Galactic latitudes, and we provide reliable distances for 13 molecular clouds for the first time., Accepted by A&A. 13 pages, 9 figures

We report the internal proper motions of 12 GHz methanol masers in massive star-forming region G35.20–0.74 observed with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at four epochs spanning about 1.5 yr. Two groups of maser features were detected, groups A and B, and the latter that had a V-shaped spatial distribution is likely tracing the north outflow in G35.20–0.74. We present a three-dimensional model for the kinematics of these masers, by assuming the interstellar medium was blown by the stellar wind from the driving source (G35.2N) of the outflow. Adopting a position angle of ~ 81° for the main axis of the outflow from previous studies, we estimate an inclination of 35° ± 5.5°, a velocity of 8.1 ± 0.7 km s−1 for the stellar wind along the main axis and an expansion speed gradient of 0.05 ± 0.016 km s−1 AU−1. From the model, we derive the age of the north outflow in G35.20–0.74 to be ~ 1.6 × 104 yr.

We present a study of the three-dimensional structure of the molecular clouds in the Galactic Centre (GC) using CO emission and OH absorption lines. Two CO isotopologue lines, $^{12}$CO ($J$=1$\rightarrow$0) and $^{13}$CO ($J$=1$\rightarrow$0), and four OH ground-state transitions, surveyed by the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH), contribute to this study. We develop a novel method to calculate the OH column density, excitation temperature, and optical depth precisely using all four OH lines, and we employ it to derive a three-dimensional model for the distribution of molecular clouds in the GC for six slices in Galactic latitude. The angular resolution of the data is 15.5 arcmin, which at the distance of the GC (8.34 kpc) is equivalent to 38 pc. We find that the total mass of OH in the GC is in the range 2400-5100 Solar mass . The face-on view at a Galactic latitude of b = 0{\deg} displays a bar-like structure with an inclination angle of 67.5 $\pm$ 2.1{\deg} with respect to the line of sight. No ring-like structure in the GC is evident in our data, likely due to the low spatial resolution of the CO and OH maps., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 15 pages, 12 figures

Context. Quasars are spatially stationary, and they are essential objects in astrometry when defining reference frames. However, the census of quasars is far from complete. Mid-infared colors can be used to find quasar candidates because AGNs show a peculiar appearance in mid-infrared color, but these methods are incapable of separating quasars from AGNs. Aims. The aim of our study is to use astrometric and mid-infrared methods to select quasars and get a reliable quasar candidates catalog. Methods. We used a near-zero proper motion criterion in conjuction with WISE (all-sky Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) [W1-W2] color to select quasar candidates. The [W1-W2] color criterion is defined by the linear boundary of two samples: LAMOST DR5 quasars, which serve as the quasar sample, and LAMOST DR5 stars and galaxies, which serve as the non-quasar sample. The contamination and completeness are evaluated. Results. We investigated the physical properties of molecular clouds and star formation processes around infrared bubbles which are essentially expanding HII regions. We performed observations of 13 galactic infrared bubble fields containing 18 bubbles. Five molecular lines, 12CO (J=1-0), 13CO (J=1-0), C18O(J=1-0), HCN (J=1-0), and HCO+ (J=1-0), were observed, and several publicly available surveys, GLIMPSE, MIPSGAL, ATLASGAL, BGPS, VGPS, MAGPIS, and NVSS, were used for comparison. We find that these bubbles are generally connected with molecular clouds, most of which are giant. Several bubble regions display velocity gradients and broad shifted profiles, which could be due to the expansion of bubbles. The masses of molecular clouds within bubbles range from 100 to 19,000 solar mass, and their dynamic ages are about 0.3-3.7 Myr, which takes into account the internal turbulence pressure of surrounding molecular clouds. Clumps are found in the vicinity of all 18 bubbles, and molecular clouds near four of these bubbles with larger angular sizes show shell-like morphologies, indicating that either collect-and-collapse or radiation-driven implosion processes may have occurred. Due to the contamination of adjacent molecular clouds, only six bubble regions are appropriate to search for outflows, and we find that four of them have outflow activities. Three bubbles display ultra-compact HII regions at their borders, and one of them is probably responsible for its outflow. In total, only six bubbles show star formation activities in the vicinity, and we suggest that star formation processes might have been triggered., Comment: 55 Pages, 32 figures.
