In order to improve the quality of solid waste utilization, this study simultaneously used recycled coarse aggregate and recycled fine aggregate to prepare recycled aggregate concrete, with fly ash partially replacing cement as a binder. After the particle gradation of recycled aggregate was artificially adjusted into continuous gradation, the effects of accelerated carbonation on the performance and microstructure of recycled concrete were studied. The microstructural change was analyzed using mercury intrusion porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy. Additionally, the environmental benefits of the recycled concrete were evaluated based on carbon emissions using the life cycle assessment method. The experimental results indicate that accelerated carbonation can increase the compressive strength of recycled concrete by up to 13%, and its microstructure becomes more compact after carbonation. The carbon emissions are reduced by more than 13% after using 20% fly ash, contributing to sustainable development. Additionally, the optimal replacement rate of recycled fine aggregate should be controlled to under 15% when both recycled coarse and fine aggregates are used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chloride–sulfate corrosion environment of concrete is a significant engineering problem. This paper investigates the effect of the complete/semi–immersion mode on the durability of concrete in a chloride–sulfate environment by using different granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) dosage rates (10–50%) of a metakaolin (MK)-based geopolymer mortar. The chloride–sulfate corrosion environment is discussed by analyzing the apparent morphology, mass change, and mechanical property change in specimens at the age of 120 d of erosion combined with XRD and SEM. The high Ca content in GBFS has an important effect on the strength and erosion resistance of the metakaolin geopolymer (MGP) group mortar; an increase in the GBFS dosage makes the MGP group mortar denser, and the initial strength of the MGP group mortar is positively correlated with the dosage of GBFS. After 120 d of erosion, the GBFS dosage is negatively correlated with erosion resistance, with the high GBFS dosage groups showing more severe damage. Semi-immersion resulted in more severe deterioration at the immersion–evaporation interface zone due to the difference in the ionic concentration and the 'wick effect' at the immersion–evaporation interface zone. Compared with the commonly used OPC mortar, the M40 and M50 groups have improved strength and corrosion resistance and are suitable for engineering environments in highly erosive areas. This paper mainly explores the feasibility of using desert sand (DS) and recycled aggregate in cement-stabilized bases. Recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and DS serve as the substitutes of natural coarse and fine aggregates, respectively, in cement-stabilized bases. A four-factor and four-level orthogonal test is designed to analyze the unconfined compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and compressive resilient modulus. Furthermore, this paper investigates the effects of cement content, fly ash (FA) replacement rate, RCA replacement rate, and DS replacement rate on the road performance of cement-stabilized bases composed of RCA and DS. The test results reveal that the performance of cement-stabilized bases with partial RCA instead of natural coarse aggregate (NCA) and partial DS instead of natural fine aggregate satisfies the road use. The correlation and microscopic analyses of the test results imply the feasibility of applying DS and recycled aggregate to cement-stabilized bases. This paper calculates and evaluates the life cycle of carbon emissions of desert sand and recycled coarse aggregate cement-stabilized macadam (DRCSM) and finds that both DS and RCA can reduce the carbon emissions of CSM, which has a positive effect on improving the environment and solving the climate crisis. The issue of uneven ground settlement caused by the excavation of subway tunnels represents a significant challenge in the design and construction of subway projects. This paper examined the fractal characteristics of surface settlement caused by subway excavation, employing wavelet transform and fractal theory. Firstly, the noise reduction effects of different wavelet functions, decomposition levels, threshold functions, and threshold selection rules were evaluated using the SNR and RMSE. Subsequently, 291 data points were derived from 18 interpolation points through fractal interpolation, representing a utilization of only 18% of the original data, to enhance the original monitoring data information by a factor of 2.94. The average relative error between the fractal interpolation results and the monitoring data was approximately 13%, which was indicative of a high degree of accuracy. Finally, the fractal dimension of the monitoring curves under different monitoring frequencies was calculated using the box-counting method. The denoising effect of the dbN wavelet function was found to be superior to that of the symN wavelet function in the denoising process of subway construction surface deformation monitoring data. Furthermore, the hard threshold method was observed to be more effective than the soft threshold method. As the monitoring frequency decreased, the fractal dimension of the deformation curves showed an overall decreasing trend. This indicated that high-frequency monitoring could capture more details and complexity of the surface settlement, while low-frequency monitoring led to a gradual flattening of the curves and a decrease in details. Cronobacter spp. (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii) are special foodborne pathogens. Cronobacter infection can cause necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis and meningitis in all age groups, especially neonates and infants, with a high fatality of up to 80%, although the infection is rare. Outbreaks of Cronobacter infection are epidemiologically proven to be associated with contaminated powdered infant formula (PIF). Cronobacter spp. can resist dry environments and survive for a long period in food with low water activity. Therefore, Cronobacter spp. have become serious pathogens of neonates and infants, as well as in the dairy industry. In this review, we present the taxonomy, pathogenesis, resistance, detection and control of Cronobacter spp.

Massive infrastructure constructions have resulted in scarcity of river sand resources. Previous studies and applications proved dune sand can partially replace river sand used in engineering to alleviate the supply and demand contradiction of river sand. However, due to the dune sand is finer, rounder and smoother than river sand, determining the appropriate proportion of dune sand for designing engineered dune sand concrete (DSC) remains challenging. To tackle this challenge, a mix design method for DSC was proposed via close packing model and mortar film thickness theory. Specifically, the close packing model was used to confirm dune sand content and sand ratio, then the dune sand and river sand were mixed to obtain engineering-standard mixed sand. The mortar film thickness theory was utilized to determine the mortar volume and to tailor the concrete slump. By proper design, the DSC achieved the 28-d compressive strengths of 50 MPa along with good workability. Increasing the thickness of the mortar film from 0.3 to 0.9 mm leads to significant changes in DSC performance. For per 0.1 mm increase in thickness, there is an average change of 14.25 mm in slump, 11.35 kg/m3 in dry density, 0.90 MPa in compressive strength at 28 d, 15.06 kg/m3 in CO2 emission, 85.3 MJ/m3 in energy consumption, and 1.2 USD/m3 in cost. The designed DSC achieved a relatively low cement intensity (CI) value of 6.23 kg/m3/MPa , implying that DSC exhibits good eco-efficiency. Considering anti-rotation of sand particles, two-dimensional Discrete Element Method (DEM) has been employed to reproduce direct shear behaviors of sand with different particle distribution sizes, so as to explore effects of anti-rotation of particle on responses of stress-displacement and dilatancy, the evolution law of shear stress, coordination number and vertical displacement of sand samples, and analyze the contact force chain, contact fabric and porosity of the samples after shearing.The results show that the anti-rotation ability of sand is enhanced, the torque of overcoming the relative rotation between particles is increased, and the peak shear stress, dilatancy and porosity in the middle of the sample are increased; with the increase of the anti-rotation coefficient, the coordination number decreases more obviously. The proportion of the contact number in the direction of 100°–160° to the total contact number decreases with the increase of the anti-rotation coefficient. The elliptical shape of the contact configuration becomes more flat, and the anisotropy of the contact force chain is more obvious; compared with fine sand, the coarse sand has greater shear capacity, more obvious dilatancy and larger porosity in the middle of the sample.The maximum minimum particle size ratio of the sample becomes larger, so that the shear strength of the sample is reduced, and the dilatancy is also weak. Examining the environmental risk sources of regional subway construction is crucial for ensuring construction safety and providing guidance for future subway line planning. This study focused on Urumqi's main urban area and used SBAS-InSAR analysis technology to extract the settlement rate field within 600 m of Urumqi Metro Line 1 and investigate these risk sources. Results showed that the environmental risk sources affecting subway construction in the study area could be classified into four categories: geological conditions, distribution of high-rise buildings, density of road networks, and density of clustered buildings. The study further analyzed the spatial distribution of each risk source and developed a comprehensive impact zoning evaluation model for environmental risk sources in the study area. The model was then used to assess the risk of the currently planned subway lines (1–7), revealing that the largest area of subway construction environmental risk sources (1444 partitions) was associated with soil layer, IV high-rise building risk, IV road network risk, and IV building density risk. Additionally, the study found that environmental risk sources had the most significant impact on Metro Line 6, emphasizing the importance of closely monitoring risk factors during future construction. Shear failure of reinforced concrete (RC) members belongs to brittle failure and has always been concerned. In this paper, 16 existing shear strength models of RC slender beams have been selected and comprehensively compared based on a set of 781 experimental test results. These formulas from eight national codes and eight published papers are mainly the semi-empirical models or the analytical models. These experimental test results were collected from 66 published papers, and the range of key parameters is relatively wide. The accuracy of these shear strength models is evaluated from overall prediction level and the effect of key parameters. These key parameters mainly contain concrete compressive strength, shear-span-to-depth ratio, effective depth, and stirrup ratio. According to the results of overall prediction and evaluation of key parameters, the prediction results of Zsutty's, Gunawan's, and Bazant–Kim's models are more accurate than others for both beams with stirrups and without stirrups. The models of ACI and JSCE exhibit higher prediction accuracy and safety margin, and their average values are between 1.19 and 1.28.
