Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a widely used metal additive manufacturing technology. However, the accumulation of internal residual stress during printing can cause significant distortion and potential failure. Although various scan patterns have been studied to reduce possible accumulated stress, such as zigzag scanning vectors with changing directions or a chessboard-based scan pattern with divided small islands, most conventional scan patterns cannot significantly reduce residual stress. The proposed adaptive toolpath generation (ATG) algorithms, aiming to minimize the thermal gradients, may result in extremely accumulated temperature fields in some cases. To address these issues, we developed a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based toolpath generation framework, with the goal of achieving uniformly distributed heat and avoiding extremely thermal accumulation regions during the LPBF process. We first developed an overall pipeline for the DRL-based toolpath generation framework, which includes uniformly sampling, agent moving and environment observation, action selection, moving constraints, rewards calculation, and the training process. To accelerate the training process, we simplified the data-intensive numerical model by considering the turning angles on the toolpath. We designed the action spaces with three options, including the minimum temperature value, the smoothest path, and the second smoothest path. The reward function was designed to minimize energy density to ensure the temperature field remains relatively stable. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed DRL-based toolpath generation framework, we performed numerical simulations of polygon shape printing domains. In addition, four groups of thin plate samples with different scan patterns were compared using the LPBF process.

It is now commonplace for organizations to pay developers to work on specific open source software (OSS) projects to pursue their business goals. Such paid developers work alongside voluntary contributors, but given the different motivations of these two groups of developers, conflict may arise, which may pose a threat to a project's sustainability. This paper presents an empirical study of paid developers and volunteers in Rust, a popular open source programming language project. Rust is a particularly interesting case given considerable concerns about corporate participation. We compare volunteers and paid developers through contribution characteristics and long-term participation, and solicit volunteers' perceptions on paid developers. We find that core paid developers tend to contribute more frequently; commits contributed by one-time paid developers have bigger sizes; peripheral paid developers implement more features; and being paid plays a positive role in becoming a long-term contributor. We also find that volunteers do have some prejudices against paid developers. This study suggests that the dichotomous view of paid vs. volunteer developers is too simplistic and that further subgroups can be identified. Companies should become more sensitive to how they engage with OSS communities, in certain ways as suggested by this study.

Relevant to broad applied fields and natural processes, interfacial ionic hydrates has been widely studied by ultrahigh-resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM). However, the complex relationship between AFM signal and the investigated system makes it difficult to determine the atomic structure of such complex system from AFM images alone. Using machine learning, we achieved precise identification of the atomic structures of interfacial water/ionic hydrates based on AFM images, including the position of each atom and the orientation of water molecules. Furthermore, it was found that structure prediction of ionic hydrates can be achieved cost-effectively by transfer learning using neural network (NN) trained with easily available interfacial water data. Thus, this work provides an efficient and economical methodology which not only opens up avenues to determine atomic structures of more complex systems from AFM images, but may also help to interpret other science-wide studies involving sophisticated experimental results., Comment: This is an article accepted for publication in National Science Review. Additive manufacturing has been vastly applied to fabricate various structures of nickel-titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloys due to its flexibility to create complex structures with minimal defects. However, the microstructure heterogeneity and secondary phase formation are two main problems that impede the further application of NiTi alloys. Although post-heat treatment is usually adopted to improve or manipulate NiTi alloy properties, it cannot realize the spatial control of thermal and/or mechanical properties of NiTi alloys. To overcome the limitations of uniform post-heat treatment, this study proposes an in-situ heat treatment strategy that is integrated into the directed energy deposition of NiTi alloys. The proposed method will potentially lead to new manufacturing capabilities to achieve location-dependent performance or property manipulation. The influences of in-situ heat treatment on the thermal and mechanical properties of printed NiTi structures were investigated. The investigations were carried out in terms of thermal cycling, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties by 3D finite element simulations and experimental characterizations. A low-power laser beam was adopted to localize the in-situ heat treatment only to the current printed layer, facilitating a reverse peritectic reaction and a transient high solution treatment successively. The proposed in-situ heat treatment on the specimen results in a more obvious phase transformation peak in the differential scanning calorimetry curves, about 50%~70% volume reduction for the Ti2Ni phase, and approximately 35 HV reduction on microhardness.

Additive manufacturing has been adopted to process nickel-titanium shape memory alloys due to its advantages of flexibility and minimal defects. The current layer-by-layer method is accompanied by a complex temperature history, which is not beneficial to the final characteristics of shape memory alloys. In this study, a continuous directed energy deposition method has been proposed to improve microstructure uniformity. The spatial characterization of nickel-titanium shape memory alloy fabricated by continuous directed energy deposition is investigated to study the temperature history, phase constituent, microstructure, and mechanical properties. The results indicate that the fabricated specimen has a monotonic temperature history, relatively uniform phase distribution and microstructure morphology, as well as high compressive strength (2982 MPa~3105 MPa) and strain (37.7%~41.1%). The reported method is expected to lay the foundation for spatial control during the printing of functional structures.

Fabrication of nickel-titanium shape memory alloy through additive manufacturing has attracted increasing interest due to its advantages of flexible manufacturing capability, low-cost customization, and minimal defects. The process parameters in directed energy deposition (DED) have a crucial impact on its molten pool characteristics (geometry, microstructure, etc.), thus influencing the final properties of shape memory effect and pseudoelasticity. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model considering heat transfer, phase change, and fluid flow has been developed to simulate the cladding geometry, melt pool depth, and deposition rate. The experimental and simulated results indicated that laser power plays a critical role in determining the melt pool width and deposition rate while scan speed and powder feed rate have less effect on cladding geometry and deposition rate. The fluid velocity has a huge influence on the distribution of elements in the molten pool. The temperature gradient G, solidification rate R, as well as shape factor G/R were calculated to illustrate the underlying mechanisms of grain structure evolution. The grain morphology distribution of cross-section from the experimental samples agreed well with the simulation results. The model reported in this paper is expected to shed light on the optimization of the deposition process and grain structure prediction.

Hybrid memory systems, comprised of emerging non-volatile memory (NVM) and DRAM, have been proposed to address the growing memory demand of applications. Emerging NVM technologies, such as phase-change memories (PCM), memristor, and 3D XPoint, have higher capacity density, minimal static power consumption and lower cost per GB. However, NVM has longer access latency and limited write endurance as opposed to DRAM. The different characteristics of two memory classes point towards the design of hybrid memory systems containing multiple classes of main memory. In the iterative and incremental development of new architectures, the timeliness of simulation completion is critical to project progression. Hence, a highly efficient simulation method is needed to evaluate the performance of different hybrid memory system designs. Design exploration for hybrid memory systems is challenging, because it requires emulation of the full system stack, including the OS, memory controller, and interconnect. Moreover, benchmark applications for memory performance test typically have much larger working sets, thus taking even longer simulation warm-up period. In this paper, we propose a FPGA-based hybrid memory system emulation platform. We target at the mobile computing system, which is sensitive to energy consumption and is likely to adopt NVM for its power efficiency. Here, because the focus of our platform is on the design of the hybrid memory system, we leverage the on-board hard IP ARM processors to both improve simulation performance while improving accuracy of the results. Thus, users can implement their data placement/migration policies with the FPGA logic elements and evaluate new designs quickly and effectively. Results show that our emulation platform provides a speedup of 9280x in simulation time compared to the software counterpart Gem5.

The current mobile applications have rapidly growing memory footprints, posing a great challenge for memory system design. Insufficient DRAM main memory will incur frequent data swaps between memory and storage, a process that hurts performance, consumes energy and deteriorates the write endurance of typical flash storage devices. Alternately, a larger DRAM has higher leakage power and drains the battery faster. Further, DRAM scaling trends make further growth of DRAMin the mobile space prohibitive due to cost. Emerging non-volatile memory (NVM) has the potential to alleviate these issues due to its higher capacity per cost than DRAM and mini-mal static power. Recently, a wide spectrum of NVM technologies, including phase-change memories (PCM), memristor, and 3D XPoint have emerged. Despite the mentioned advantages, NVM has longer access latency compared to DRAMand NVM writes can incur higher latencies and wear costs. Therefore integration of these new memory technologies in the memory hierarchy requires a fundamental rearchitect-ing of traditional system designs. In this work, we propose a hardware-accelerated memory manager (HMMU) that addresses both types of memory in a flat space address space. We design a set of data placement and data migration policies within this memory manager, such that we may exploit the advantages of each memory technology. By augmenting the system with this HMMU, we reduce the overall memory latency while also reducing writes to the NVM. Experimental results show that our design achieves a 39% reduction in energy consumption with only a 12% performance degradation versus an all-DRAM baseline that is likely untenable in the future.
