Abstract

Based on the bioassay-guided strategy, we isolated 6-six allelochemicals [cichoric acid (I), 1,3-dicaffeoylquinic acid (II), 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (III), chlorogenic acid (IV), 1-hydroxy-2-phthoic acid (V), echinacoside (VI)] from the roots of Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench. Their structures were identified by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) spectroscopic data. The bioassays studies included allelopathic and algicidal activities to test the effects of extracts and isolated fractions against the test weeds (Amaranthus viridis L., Portulaca oleracea L. and Microcystis aeruginosa Kutzing). At 100 µg/mL, compound (II) inhibited the shoot length and germination of A. viridis and P. oleracea weeds with the germination RI of -0.95±0.04 and -0.95±0.02, respectively. Furthermore, compound (III) showed the strongest inhibition of root length of P. oleracea L. We also found that compounds I-VI have algicidal activity. The compound (I) at low inoculum (5.0×102 cells mL-1) and high inoculum (1.0×104 cells mL-1), showed the highest algicidal activity of 78 % and 87.67 % 6 h after the treatment at 5 µg mL-1 respectively.

Abstract

Five phytotoxic substances with allelopathic activity were isolated from endophytic fungi Aspergillus sp. YL-6 habited in Pleioblastus amarus. The chemical structures of these substances were determined as chaetominine (1), (+)-alantrypinone (2), questin (3), isorhodoptilometrin (4), and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (5) by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry data. The potential allelopathic effects of compounds 1–5 were evaluated on wheat (Triticum aestivum) and radish (Raphanus sativus). Under lab condition, at concentrations of 10 and 20 ppm, compounds 1–5 inhibit the germination and growth of the two tested seeds completely. An idole-3-acetic acid (IAA) derivative, (+)-alantrypinone (2) displayed the best inhibitory effects on radish seeds among these tested compounds with the similar activity as the positive control glyphosate, a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide. Abstract

In this study, 136 strains of endophytic fungi were isolated from the Chinese traditional medicinal plant Coptis chinensis Franch. Of these, 129 strains were classified into 12 different genera according to morphological traits and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) gene sequence analyses. Their antifungal activities were assessed against the following fungi: Magnaporthe oryzae, Pythium graminicola, Cylindrocarpon destructans, Fusarium oxysporum, Cercospora zeae-maydis, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Setosphaeria turcica and Botrytis cinerea. Fourteen endophytic strains were active against at least one of the selected fungi. The most active strain Cc-HG-7 identified as Cryptosporiopsis ericae displayed inhibition rates of 81.42% and 72.00%, respectively, against S. sclerotiorum and S. turcica in dual culture technique. The volatile antifungal compounds were identified using headspace solid-phase microextraction, followed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry to investigate the potential biocontrol mechanisms of strain Cc-HG-7. The results suggested that the strain Cc-HG-7 could be a potential agent for the biological control of S. sclerotiorum and S. turcica. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
