High carrier mobility and uniform device performance are of crucial importance for organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based device and integrated circuit applications. However, strategies for achieving high device performance with small variations from batch to batch are still desired. Here, we report a thin liquid crystal-like film of 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene (dif-TES-ADT) grown on a N,N′-ditridecylperylene-3,4,9,10-tetra-carboxylic diimide (PTCDI-C13) template, confirmed by atomic force microscopy and polarized fluorescence microscopy. The liquid crystal-like films with large crystalline domains are further employed as carrier transport channels for OFETs. As a result, we achieved high-performance OFETs with a saturation carrier mobility of 1.62 ± 0.26 cm2 V−1 s−1 and a small variation of 16% among three batches. This finding provides a new strategy to design materials and device structures to simultaneously achieve high carrier mobility and device uniformity.

Assembly of semiconducting organic molecules with multiple aryl-metal covalent bonds into stable one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) metal-organic frameworks represents a promising route to the integration of single-molecule electronics in terms of structural robustness and charge transport efficiency. Although various metastable organometallic frameworks have been constructed by the extensive use of single aryl-metal bonds, it remains a great challenge to embed multiple aryl-metal bonds into these structures due to inadequate knowledge of harnessing such complex bonding motifs. Here, we demonstrate the substrate-modulated synthesis of 1D and 2D metal-organic hybrids (MOHs) with the organic building blocks (perylene) interlinked solely with multiple aryl-metal bonds via the stepwise thermal dehalogenation of 3,4,9,10-tetrabromo-1,6,7,12-tetrachloroperylene and subsequent metal-organic connection on metal surfaces. More importantly, the conversion from 1D to 2D MOHs is completely impeded on Au(111) but dominant on Ag(111). We comprehensively study the distinct reaction pathways on the two surfaces by visually tracking the structural evolution of the MOHs with high-resolution scanning tunneling and noncontact atomic force microscopy, supported by first-principles density functional theory calculations. The substrate-dependent structural control of the MOHs is attributed to the variation of the M-X (M = Au, Ag; X = C, Cl) bond strength regulated by the nature of the metal species.

On-surface synthesis is at the verge of emerging as the method of choice for the generation and visualization of unstable or unconventional molecules, which could not be obtained via traditional synthetic methods. A case in point is the on-surface synthesis of the structurally elusive cyclotriphosphazene (P3N3), an inorganic aromatic analogue of benzene. Here, we report the preparation of this fleetingly existing species on a Cu(111) surface at 5.2 K through molecular manipulation with unprecedented precision, i.e., voltage pulse-induced sextuple dechlorination of an ultra-small (about 6 Å) hexachlorophosphazene P3N3Cl6 molecule by the tip of a scanning probe microscope. Real-space atomic-level imaging of cyclotriphosphazene reveals its planar D3h-symmetric ring structure. Furthermore, this synthetic strategy has been expanded to generate cyclotriphosphazene via photolysis of a hexaazide precursor P3N21 for complementary measurements by matrix isolation infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy.

INTRODUCTION Studying the pathological changes of ligaments in patients with haemophilic arthritis (HA) has important significance for guiding the release of ligaments during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and exploring interventions to prevent ligament lesions. AIM This study was conducted to show the pathological changes and investigate the lysine oxidase (LOX) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, -2, and -3 levels in the ligaments of patients with HA compared with those of patients with osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS Ligaments obtained during the TKA were stained with Masson trichrome, Verhoeff-Van Gieson and haematoxylin and eosin to show the basic pathological changes. Collagen I, elastin, LOXs and MMP-1, -2, and -3 expression levels were detected via western blot. LOX and MMP-1, -2, and -3 mRNA expression levels were analysed via quantitative real-time PCR. RESULTS Compared with OA ligaments, HA ligaments were constructed more loosely with wider gaps, more breaks, haemocytodeposition and local hypertrophy among the fibres. LOXs and MMP mRNA expression levels were upregulated in the HA tissues, which was consistent with the western blot results. Collagen I and elastin levels were also higher in patients with HA. CONCLUSIONS The metabolism of the ligaments in patients with HA is more complex than in those with OA, and the ligaments of patients with HA have stronger healing and destruction processes. This pathology is related to iron overload and imbalanced inflammatory factors due to repeated intra-articular bleeding.

Constructing low-dimensional covalent assemblies with tailored size and connectivity is challenging yet often key for applications in molecular electronics where optical and electronic properties of the quantum materials are highly structure dependent. We present a versatile approach for building such structures block by block on bilayer sodium chloride (NaCl) films on Cu(111) with the tip of an atomic force microscope, while tracking the structural changes with single-bond resolution. Covalent homo-dimers in cis and trans configurations and homo-/hetero-trimers were selectively synthesized by a sequence of dehalogenation, translational manipulation and intermolecular coupling of halogenated precursors. Further demonstrations of structural build-up include complex bonding motifs, like carbon–iodine–carbon bonds and fused carbon pentagons. This work paves the way for synthesizing elusive covalent nanoarchitectures, studying structural modifications and revealing pathways of intermolecular reactions., Tailoring the size and connectivity of organic nanostructures is challenging but is often key in molecular electronics for tuning the properties of the quantum materials. Now an approach has been developed for building low-dimensional covalent architectures block by block on a surface by highly selective tip-induced intermolecular reactions.

Clarifying the links between iron and FGF23, SOX9 expression in chondrocytes would be helpful for comprehending articular cartilage degradation pathogenesis in blood-induced arthritis and exploring new protective methods.The purpose of this study was to determine iron regulation of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and SRY-box 9 (SOX9) in human chondrocytes, an area which is unexplored in blood-induced arthritis cartilage degradation pathogenesis.Expression of FGF23, SOX9, MMP13 and collagen Ⅱ in articular cartilage of patients with osteoarthritis (OA) or haemophilic arthritis (HA) was determined by western blot (WB). Iron-induced FGF23 and SOX9 mRNA and protein expression in primary human normal chondrocyte cells (HUM-iCell-s018) was quantified by qRT-PCR and WB, respectively.We found that compared with OA patients, the expression of FGF23, MMP13 in articular cartilage of patients with HA was up-regulated, while the expression of SOX9, collagen Ⅱ was down-regulated. Iron-induced FGF23 and suppressed SOX9 expression in chondrocytes in a dose-dependent manner.These findings demonstrated that iron was involved in hemophilic cartilage lesion directly via changing cartilage phenotype through regulation of FGF23 and SOX9 expression in chondrocytes.

As an emerging discipline in the intersection of chemistry and physics, on-surface chemistry has been at the forefront of surface science since its inception. On-surface chemistry has obvious differences from classical solution chemistry although they are closely related. Many reactions in solution become applicable in on-surface reactions under ultra-high vacuum conditions without the involvement of solvents. Furthermore, with the aid of surface confinement effects, a series of highly accurate, highly selective chemical reactions that are difficult to achieve in traditional solution reactions can be accomplished, which shows attractive potential for functional macromolecule design, synthetic chemistry, and new material fabrication. In this review, we present some representative on-surface reactions. By comparing the differences in reaction paths and products with traditional solution reactions, the characteristics of on-surface chemistry are epitomized. In addtion, we make a brief outlook for the opportunities and challenges of this novel synthetic tool facing in the future.

Controlling the regioselectivity of C-H activation in unimolecular reactions is of great significance for the rational synthesis of functional graphene nanostructures, which are called nanographenes. Here, we demonstrate that the adsorption of tetranaphthyl- p-terphenyl precursors on metal surfaces can completely change the cyclodehydrogenation route and lead to obtaining planar benzo-fused perihexacenes rather than double [7]helicenes during solution synthesis. The course of the on-surface planarization reactions is monitored using scanning probe microscopy, which unambiguously reveals the formation of dibenzoperihexacenes and the structures of reaction intermediates. The regioselective planarization can be attributed to the flattened adsorption geometries and the reduced flexibility of the precursors on the surfaces, in addition to the different mechanism of the on-surface cyclodehydrogenation from that of the solution counterpart. We have further achieved the on-surface synthesis of dibenzoperioctacene by employing a tetra-anthryl- p-terphenyl precursor. The energy gaps of the new nanographenes are measured to be approximately 2.1 eV (dibenzoperihexacene) and 1.3 eV (dibenzoperioctacene) on a Au(111) surface. Our findings shed new light on the regioselectivity in cyclodehydrogenation reactions, which will be important for exploring the synthesis of unprecedented nanographenes.

Developments in micro-displays have led to great interest in patterning OLEDs on the microscale. However, because organic molecules are fragile in adverse environments, patterning OLEDs on the microscale remains underdeveloped. In this work, the fabrication of Micro-OLEDs via the area-selective growth of hole-transporting material is reported. The active material is selectively deposited on pre-determined areas, and this technique is compatible with photolithography. High-resolution OLEDs with feature sizes as low as sub-micrometer and green-, orange-red- and deep-blue-emitting devices are demonstrated. This technique provides a promising method for the fabrication of high-resolution OLED devices over large areas.

It was a long-cherished dream for chemists to take a direct look at chemical bonding, a fundamental component of chemistry. This dream was finally accomplished by the state-of-the-art noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) equipped with qPlus force sensors and carbon monoxide (CO) functionalized tips. The resolved interconnectivity between atoms and molecules in NC-AFM frequency shift images is interpreted as chemical bonding, providing essential knowledge of the bond length, bond angle and even bond order. The featured contrast of different chemical bonds can serve as fingerprints for further interpretation of chemical structures toward unknown species synthesized on surfaces. This breakthrough enriches characterization tools for surface science and brings our understanding of on-surface reactions to a new level. Beyond bond imaging, the application of NC-AFM has been extended to quantifying interatomic interactions, identifying three-dimensional nanostructures, manipulating molecules and reactions, as well as determining molecular electronic characteristics. Moreover, some recent efforts address the improvement of the usability and versatility of the bond-resolved NC-AFM technique, including high-resolution molecular investigation on bulk insulators, application-specific tip modification, stable bond imaging above liquid helium temperature and autonomous experimentation implemented by artificial intelligence.

Selectivity is a key parameter for building customized organic nanostructures via bottom-up approaches. Therefore, strategies are needed that allow connecting molecular entities at a specific stage of the assembly process in a chemoselective manner. Studying the mechanisms of such reactions is the key to apply these transformations for the buildup of organic nanostructures on surfaces. Especially, the knowledge about the precise adsorption geometry of intermediates at different stages during the reaction process and their interactions with surface atoms or adatoms is of fundamental importance, since often catalytic processes are involved. We show the selective dehalogenation of 4-bromo-3″-iodo- p-terphenyl on the Cu(111) surface using bond imaging atomic force microscopy with CO-functionalized tips. The deiodination and debromination reactions are triggered either by heating or by locally applying voltage pulses with the tip. We observed a strong hierarchical behavior of the dehalogenation with respect to temperature and voltage. In connection with first-principles simulations we can determine the orientation and position of the pristine molecules as well as adsorbed mono/diradicals and the halogens. We find that the isolated radicals are chemisorbed to Cu(111) top sites, which are lifted by 16 pm ( meta-position) and 32 pm ( para-position) from the Cu surface plane. This leads to a strongly twisted and bent 3D adsorption structure. After heating, different types of dimers are observed whose molecules are either bound to surface atoms or connected via Cu adatoms. Such knowledge about the intermediate geometry and its interaction with the surface will open the way to rationally design syntheses on surfaces.

Hierarchical control of chemical reactions is being considered as one of the most ambitious and challenging topics in modern organic chemistry. In this study, we have realized the one-by-one scission of the X–H bonds (X = N and C) of aromatic amines in a controlled fashion on the Cu(111) surface. Each dehydrogenation reaction leads to certain metal–organic supramolecular structures, which were monitored in single-bond resolution via scanning tunneling microscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy. Moreover, the reaction pathways were elucidated from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations. Our insights pave the way for connecting molecules into complex structures in a more reliable and predictable manner, utilizing carefully tuned stepwise on-surface synthesis protocols.

In this communication, a direct coupling of patterned growth of rubrene crystalline thin films with OFET fabrication is presented. The film was grown between pre-patterned Au electrodes covered with an organic monolayer, which directly allowed the fabrication of OFET devices with a sub-micrometer channel length. More importantly, close packed and porous film structures can be controlled by adjusting the space between the electrodes, resulting in a two orders of magnitude difference in carrier mobility. The technique is completely compatible with lithography methods thus may find potential applications in addressable and crosstalk suppressing OFET arrays.

We demonstrate the ability of resolving the chemical structure of single organic molecules using non-contact atomic force microscopy with higher normal eigenmodes of quartz tuning fork sensors. In order to achieve submolecular resolution, CO-functionalized tips at low temperatures are used. The tuning fork sensors are operated in ultrahigh vacuum in the frequency modulation mode by exciting either their first or second eigenmode. Despite the high effective spring constant of the second eigenmode (on the order of several tens of kN/m), the force sensitivity is sufficiently high to achieve atomic resolution above the organic molecules. This is observed for two different tuning fork sensors with different tip geometries (small tip vs. large tip). These results represent an important step towards resolving the chemical structure of single molecules with multifrequency atomic force microscopy techniques where two or more eigenmodes are driven simultaneously.
