Irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) behavior and irradiated microstructural features of cold-worked 316 stainless steel flux thimble tube specimens were investigated in 340 °C simulated PWR primary water. It covers three dose levels (∼40, ∼60 and ∼100 dpa) and five stress levels (35%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 70% of irradiated yield strength at high temperature. Crack initiation in highly irradiated materials occurred rapidly in 33 failed specimens at high-stress level. A clear dose dependence for IASCC initiation was observed. The susceptibility to IASCC initiation reached saturation around 40–60 dpa. Fracture surface of different dose level O-ring specimens showed that intergranular cracking was the main fracture mode. Discrete slip steps were observed on intergranular fractured regions of each dose level specimens, which is associated as evidence of dislocation channeling. A threshold stress level which was close to 30% yield strength was determined on various testing results from literature and this study. Data scatter was observed for those results from different studies but all agreed on that the failure rate increases with stress level and neutron dose.

The microstructure and hardness of fusion boundary (FB) and near FB of a low alloy steel (LAS) 16MND5 welding cladded with stainless steel 308L for nuclear reactor pressure vessel were investigated by using modern electron microscopes and nano-indenter. The wavy morphology of fusion line results in changes of nearby microstructures of both cladding 308L and substrate 16MND5 along the FB. The microstructure of the cladding 308L is composed of columnar grains adjacent most of the FB, but it is equiaxed grains at the valley of the wavy fusion line with large curvature. The microstructures of 16MND5 near the FB are ferrite at the wavy fusion line with large curvature, martensite at the wavy fusion line with small curvature, and transition mixed structure between them. A carbide-depleted zone adjacent to the FB was observed in the 16MND5 side, of which the hardness is lower than both FB and 16MND5 base metal. Three types of FB can be observed according to the width, being narrow or sharp FB, needle-like martensite FB, and partially-mixed zone FB. The FB includes high density of carbides of M7C3 and M3C, leading to a hardness peak at FB.

Microcracks are always present in the deposited metal of nickel-based alloys and austenitic stainless steels, which affects the safety of the pressure pipes. If compressive stress can be introduced into the cracked position by overlay welding, the time required with ordinary gouging repair welding technology will be significantly reduced, which is practical significance for pressure pipes repair welding. In this work, a stainless-steel T-pipe joint was fabricated using manual metal arc welding with an ER316L wire, and an overlay weld was fabricated using tungsten inert gas arc welding with an ERNiCrFe-7A wire. The overlay thickness was about 10 mm. The contour method was employed to measure the residual stress in the T-pipe joint. The results show that compressive residual stress about 50 MPa is formed in the original ER316L weld, which proves that the residual compressive stress can be obtained in the original weld by surfacing 10 mm thick nickel base alloy on the original weld surface.
