Abstract: Precise direct cosmic-ray (CR) measurements provide an important probe to study the energetic particle sources in our Galaxy, and the interstellar environment through which these particles propagate. Uncertainties on hadronic models, ion-nucleon cross sections in particular, are currently the limiting factor towards obtaining more accurate CR ion flux measurements with calorimetric space-based experiments. We present an energy-dependent measurement of the inelastic cross section of protons and helium-4 nuclei (alpha particles) on a Bi$_4$Ge$_3$O$_{12}$ target, using 88 months of data collected by the DAMPE space mission. The kinetic energy range per nucleon of the measurement points ranges from 18 GeV to 9 TeV for protons, and from 5 GeV/n to 3 TeV/n for helium-4 nuclei. Our results lead to a significant improvement of the CR flux normalisation. Abstract: The second brightest GRB in history, GRB230307A provides an ideal laboratory to study the details of GRB prompt emission thanks to its extraordinarily high photon statistics and its single broad pulse overall shape characterized by an energy-dependent fast-rise-exponential-decay (FRED) profile. Here we demonstrate that its broad pulse is composed of many rapidly variable short pulses, rather than being the superposition of many short pulses on top of a slow component. Such a feature is consistent with the picture of many mini-jets due to local magnetic reconnection events in a large emission zone far from the GRB central engine, as envisaged in the internal-collision-induced magnetic reconnection and turbulence (ICMART) model, but raises a great challenge to the internal shock models that attribute all variability components to collisions among different shells. Since relativistic mini-jets demand strong magnetization in the outflow, this work provides strong evidence for a Poynting-flux-dominated jet composition of this bright GRB., Comment: 7 pages and 2 figures in the main text. 27 pages and 9 figures in total

Abstract: Gravitational-wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is a space-borne instrument dedicated to monitoring high-energy transients, including Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) and Terrestrial Electron Beams (TEBs). We implemented a TGF/TEB search algorithm for GECAM, with which 147 bright TGFs, 2 typical TEBs and 2 special TEB-like events are identified during an effective observation time of $\sim$9 months. We show that, with gamma-ray and charged particle detectors, GECAM can effectively identify and distinguish TGFs and TEBs, and measure their temporal and spectral properties in detail. A very high TGF-lightning association rate of $\sim$80\% is obtained between GECAM and GLD360 in east Asia region., Comment: The paper was accepted by Geophysical Research Letters on June 16th, 2023

Abstract: Recent observations of the light component of the cosmic-ray spectrum have revealed unexpected features that motivate further and more precise measurements up to the highest energies. The Dark Matter Particle Explorer is a satellite-based cosmic-ray experiment that has been operational since December 2015, continuously collecting data on high-energy cosmic particles with very good statistics, energy resolution, and particle identification capabilities. In this work, the latest measurements of the energy spectrum of proton+helium in the energy range from 46 GeV to 464 TeV are presented. Among the most distinctive features of the spectrum, a spectral hardening at 600 GeV has been observed, along with a softening at 29 TeV measured with a 6.6{\sigma} significance. Moreover, the detector features and the analysis approach allowed for the extension of the spectral measurement up to the sub-PeV region. Abstract: More than a century after the performance of the oil drop experiment, the possible existence of fractionally charged particles FCP still remains unsettled. The search for FCPs is crucial for some extensions of the Standard Model in particle physics. Most of the previously conducted searches for FCPs in cosmic rays were based on experiments underground or at high altitudes. However, there have been few searches for FCPs in cosmic rays carried out in orbit other than AMS-01 flown by a space shuttle and BESS by a balloon at the top of the atmosphere. In this study, we conduct an FCP search in space based on on-orbit data obtained using the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite over a period of five years. Unlike underground experiments, which require an FCP energy of the order of hundreds of GeV, our FCP search starts at only a few GeV. An upper limit of $6.2\times 10^{-10}~~\mathrm{cm^{-2}sr^{-1} s^{-1}}$ is obtained for the flux. Our results demonstrate that DAMPE exhibits higher sensitivity than experiments of similar types by three orders of magnitude that more stringently restricts the conditions for the existence of FCP in primary cosmic rays., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted by PRD

6. Fatigue, Physical Activity, and Quality of Life in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study

We aimed to investigate the relationship between PA levels, fatigue, and other health-related quality of life (QoL) in Chinese IBD patients.Patients and Methods: The study is a cross-sectional investigation conducted at a comprehensive IBD diagnosis and treatment facility in East China, spanning from August 2022 to February 2023. A total of 245 participants were initially enrolled, and after excluding individuals with incomplete data about crucial exposure and outcome variables, the final sample size amounted to 237. Participants were provided with a questionnaire encompassing sociodemographic factors, clinical information, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20), and the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ). Correlation analysis was employed to assess the relationship between variables.Results: A majority of participants (144) exhibited low levels of PA. Furthermore, 40.5% of all participants reported experiencing fatigue. Individuals with low levels of PA had an average MIF-20 score of 62.9± 16.0. Correlation analysis showed that PA was significantly and negatively associated with fatigue (r = − 0.224, p < 0.001). Additionally, PA was also negatively correlated with anxiety (r = − 0.150, p < 0.05) and depression (r = − 0.242, p < 0.001). On the other hand, PA was positively correlated with quality of life (QoL) (r = 0.171, p < 0.01). Furthermore, our analysis indicated that sleep disorders were positively associated with both anxiety (r = 0.349, p < 0.01) and depression (r = 0.354, p < 0.001).Conclusion: The levels of PA are significantly low, and there is a high prevalence of fatigue among individuals with IBD. PA in IBD showed a strong negative correlation with fatigue and a strong positive correlation with quality of life.Keywords: physical activity, inflammatory bowel disease, fatigue, quality of life

Abstract: One month after launching Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), a bright thermonuclear X-ray burst from 4U~0614+09, was observed on January 24, 2021. We report the time-resolved spectroscopy of the burst and a burst oscillation detection at 413 Hz with a fractional amplitude 3.4\% (rms). This coincides with the burst oscillation previously discovered with \textit{Swift}/BAT \citep{Strohmayer2008}, and therefore confirms the spin frequency of this source. This burst is the brightest one in the normal bursts (except the superburst) ever detected from 4U~0614+09, which leads to an upper limit of distance estimation as 3.1 kpc. The folded light curve during the burst oscillation shows a multi-peak structure, which is the first case observed during a single burst oscillation in nonpulsating sources. The multi-peak profile could be due to additional harmonics of the burst oscillation, which is corresponding to several brighter/fainter spots at the stellar surface.

Abstract: As the main detector of the GECAM satellite, the calibration of the energy response and detection efficiency of the GRD detector is the main content of the ground-based calibration. The calibration goal requires the calibrated energy points to sample the full energy range (8 keV-2 MeV) as much as possible. The low energy band (8-160 keV) is calibrated with the X-ray beam, while the high energy band (>160 keV) with radioactive sources. This article mainly focuses on the calibration of the energy response and detection efficiency in the 8-160 keV with a refined measurement around the absorption edges of the lanthanum bromide crystal. The GRD performances for different crystal types, data acquisition modes, working modes, and incident positions are also analyzed in detail. We show that the calibration campaign is comprehensive, and the calibration results are generally consistent with simulations as expected., Comment: 16 pages,46 figures

Abstract: The GECAM mission consists of two identical microsatellites (GECAM-A and GECAM-B). Each satellite is equipped with 25 gamma-ray detectors (GRD) and 8 charged particle detectors (CPD). The main scientific objective of the GECAM mission is to detect gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with the gravitational wave events produced by the merging of binary compact stars. After the launch on Dec. 10, 2020 , we carried out a series of on orbit tests. This paper introduces the test results of the GECAM-B satellite. According to the in-flight performance, the energy band for gamma-ray detection of GECAM-B is from about 7 keV to 3.5 MeV. GECAM-B can achieve prompt localization of GRBs. For the first time, GECAM-B realized a quasi-real-time transmission of trigger information using Beidou-3 RDSS. Abstract: The measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray helium nuclei from 70 GeV to 80 TeV using 4.5 years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is reported in this work. A hardening of the spectrum is observed at an energy of about 1.3 TeV, similar to previous observations. In addition, a spectral softening at about 34 TeV is revealed for the first time with large statistics and well controlled systematic uncertainties, with an overall significance of $4.3\sigma$. The DAMPE spectral measurements of both cosmic protons and helium nuclei suggest a particle charge dependent softening energy, although with current uncertainties a dependence on the number of nucleons cannot be ruled out., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, published in Phys. Abstract: The precise measurement of the spectrum of protons, the most abundant component of the cosmic radiation, is necessary to understand the source and acceleration of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. This work reports the measurement of the cosmic ray proton fluxes with kinetic energies from 40 GeV to 100 TeV, with two and a half years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). This is the first time an experiment directly measures the cosmic ray protons up to ~100 TeV with a high statistics. The measured spectrum confirms the spectral hardening found by previous experiments and reveals a softening at ~13.6 TeV, with the spectral index changing from ~2.60 to ~2.85. Our result suggests the existence of a new spectral feature of cosmic rays at energies lower than the so-called knee, and sheds new light on the origin of Galactic cosmic rays., Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures, published in Science Advances

Abstract: The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), a satellite-based cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector, was launched on December 17, 2015, and began its on-orbit operation on December 24, 2015. In this work we document the on-orbit calibration procedures used by DAMPE and report the calibration results of the Plastic Scintillator strip Detector (PSD), the Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK), the BGO imaging calorimeter (BGO), and the Neutron Detector (NUD). The results are obtained using Galactic cosmic rays, bright known GeV gamma-ray sources, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each sub-detector. The determination of the boundary of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), the measurement of the live time, and the alignments of the detectors are also introduced. The calibration results demonstrate the stability of the detectors in almost two years of the on-orbit operation.

Abstract: Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are brief radio emissions from distant astronomical sources. Some are known to repeat, but most are single bursts. Non-repeating FRB observations have had insufficient positional accuracy to localize them to an individual host galaxy. We report the interferometric localization of the single pulse FRB 180924 to a position 4 kpc from the center of a luminous galaxy at redshift 0.3214. The burst has not been observed to repeat. The properties of the burst and its host are markedly different from the only other accurately localized FRB source. The integrated electron column density along the line of sight closely matches models of the intergalactic medium, indicating that some FRBs are clean probes of the baryonic component of the cosmic web., Comment: Published online in Science 27 June 2019

Abstract: Oxide heterostructures and superlattices have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years owing to the rich exotic properties encountered at their interfaces. We focus on the potential of tunable correlated oxides by investigating the spectral function of the prototypical correlated metal SrVO3, using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS) to access both unoccupied and occupied electronic states, respectively. We demonstrate a remarkable level of tunability in the spectral function of SrVO3 by varying its thickness within the SrVO3/SrTiO3 superlattice, showing that the effects of electron correlation can be tuned from dominating the energy spectrum in a strongly correlated Mott-Hubbard insulator, towards a correlated metal. We show that the effects of dimensionality on the correlated properties of SrVO3 are augmented by interlayer coupling, yielding a highly flexible correlated oxide that may be readily married with other oxide systems.

Abstract: DAMPE (DArk Matter Particle Explorer) is a spaceborne high-energy cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector, successfully launched in December 2015. It is designed to probe astroparticle physics in the broad energy range from few GeV to 100 TeV. The scientific goals of DAMPE include the identification of possible signatures of Dark Matter annihilation or decay, the study of the origin and propagation mechanisms of cosmic-ray particles, and gamma-ray astronomy. DAMPE consists of four sub-detectors: a plastic scintillator strip detector, a Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK), a BGO calorimeter and a neutron detector. The STK is composed of six double layers of single-sided silicon micro-strip detectors interleaved with three layers of tungsten for photon conversions into electron-positron pairs. The STK is a crucial component of DAMPE, allowing to determine the direction of incoming photons, to reconstruct tracks of cosmic rays and to estimate their absolute charge (Z). We present the in-flight performance of the STK based on two years of in-flight DAMPE data, which includes the noise behavior, signal response, thermal and mechanical stability, alignment and position resolution.

Abstract: The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne particle detector designed to probe electrons and gamma-rays in the few GeV to 10 TeV energy range, as well as cosmic-ray proton and nuclei components between 10 GeV and 100 TeV. The silicon-tungsten tracker-converter is a crucial component of DAMPE. It allows the direction of incoming photons converting into electron-positron pairs to be estimated, and the trajectory and charge (Z) of cosmic-ray particles to be identified. It consists of 768 silicon micro-strip sensors assembled in 6 double layers with a total active area of 6.6 m$^2$. Silicon planes are interleaved with three layers of tungsten plates, resulting in about one radiation length of material in the tracker. Internal alignment parameters of the tracker have been determined on orbit, with non-showering protons and helium nuclei. We describe the alignment procedure and present the position resolution and alignment stability measurements.

Abstract: High energy cosmic ray electrons plus positrons (CREs), which lose energy quickly during their propagation, provide an ideal probe of Galactic high-energy processes and may enable the observation of phenomena such as dark-matter particle annihilation or decay. The CRE spectrum has been directly measured up to $\sim 2$ TeV in previous balloon- or space-borne experiments, and indirectly up to $\sim 5$ TeV by ground-based Cherenkov $\gamma$-ray telescope arrays. Evidence for a spectral break in the TeV energy range has been provided by indirect measurements of H.E.S.S., although the results were qualified by sizeable systematic uncertainties. Here we report a direct measurement of CREs in the energy range $25~{\rm GeV}-4.6~{\rm TeV}$ by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) with unprecedentedly high energy resolution and low background. The majority of the spectrum can be properly fitted by a smoothly broken power-law model rather than a single power-law model. The direct detection of a spectral break at $E \sim0.9$ TeV confirms the evidence found by H.E.S.S., clarifies the behavior of the CRE spectrum at energies above 1 TeV and sheds light on the physical origin of the sub-TeV CREs., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, Nature in press, doi:10.1038/nature24475

Abstract: The precise measurement of the spectrum of protons, the most abundant component of the cosmic radiation, is necessary to understand the source and acceleration of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. This work reports the measurement of the cosmic ray proton fluxes with kinetic energies from 40 GeV to 100 TeV, with 2 1/2 years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). This is the first time that an experiment directly measures the cosmic ray protons up to ~100 TeV with high statistics. The measured spectrum confirms the spectral hardening at ~300 GeV found by previous experiments and reveals a softening at ~13.6 TeV, with the spectral index changing from ~2.60 to ~2.85. Our result suggests the existence of a new spectral feature of cosmic rays at energies lower than the so-called knee and sheds new light on the origin of Galactic cosmic rays.

The exact mechanisms of folliculo-sebaceous-apocrine defects and adnexal tumorigenesis are unknown in NS, but benign and malignant neoplasms are often due to a complex etiology in NS. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been implicated in various important biological processes and regulate inflammatory diseases and tumors. However, the role of lncRNAs in nevus sebaceous is unclear.Objective: To identify NS-associated mRNA and lncRNA profiles and predict their potential roles in the development of the folliculo-sebaceous-apocrine unit and adnexal tumorigenesis.Methods: RNA-seq was used to identify NS-associated genes and lncRNAs. Analysis software Illumina NovaSeq 6000 was used to analyze the sequences, and real-time PCR and Western blot were used to validate the differentially expressed genes. Competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNA) networks were constructed by prediction software TargetScan & miRanda.Results: Many mRNAs were significantly differentially expressed between nevus sebaceous and adjacent normal scalp tissues. Among them, 72 were upregulated and 18 were downregulated. KEGG pathway analysis further revealed that 32 functional pathways were associated with the upregulated mRNAs, while only 1 pathway was associated with the downregulated mRNAs. Verification by real-time PCR and Western blot indicated that CDKN2AIP gene was downregulated consistently in NS tissue compared to normal scalp skin. Additionally, 7 upregulated and 10 downregulated significantly differentially expressed lncRNAs were detected between NS and adjacent normal scalp tissues. Three downregulated lncRNAs including AL355607.2, RP5-1024G6.8 and AC007780.1 were predicted to consistently associate with CDKN2AIP expression by competing endogenous RNAs(ceRNA) construction.Conclusion: Both mRNA and lncRNA profiles were altered in NS scalp tissues. Abstract: The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), one of the four scientific space science missions within the framework of the Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a general purpose high energy cosmic-ray and gamma-ray observatory, which was successfully launched on December 17th, 2015 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The DAMPE scientific objectives include the study of galactic cosmic rays up to $\sim 10$ TeV and hundreds of TeV for electrons/gammas and nuclei respectively, and the search for dark matter signatures in their spectra. In this paper we illustrate the layout of the DAMPE instrument, and discuss the results of beam tests and calibrations performed on ground. Exploring novel biomarkers in vitro for the early detection of LC would be of great importance.Patients and Methods: We measured DNA methylation levels of 21 CpG sites within Patatin-like phospholipase domain containing 2 (PNPLA2) gene in the peripheral blood of 168 early-stage LC cases (94.0% LC at stage I) and 187 age- and gender-matched cancer-free controls. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using logistic regression adjusted for covariates. Non-parametric tests were applied for the comparisons of stratified groups.Results: Hypomethylation of PNPLA2_CpG_8,10 and hypermethylation of PNPLA2_CpG_9 were correlated to the early-stage LC with the ORs of 1.44 (95% CI: 1.06– 1.96, P = 0.018) and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.69– 0.98, P = 0.029), respectively. The associations were still significant for the very early-stage LC patients (stage I). Further gender- and age-stratified analyses indicated that the association between hypomethylation of PNPLA2_CpG_8,10 and LC existed only in females and in subjects younger than 55 years. In addition, the association between LC and hypermethylation of PNPLA2_CpG_6 and PNPLA2_CpG_9 was also observed in the younger population.Conclusion: Taken together, our study has proved the hypothesis that the altered methylation in the peripheral blood may be correlated with the burden of cancer at an early stage. 28. Na-Ion Intercalation and Charge Storage Mechanism in 2D Vanadium Carbide

Abstract: 2D vanadium carbide MXene containing surface functional groups (denoted as V2CTx, where Tx are surface functional groups) is synthesized and studied as anode material for Na-ion batteries. V2CTx anode exhibits reversible charge storage with good cycling stability and high rate capability through electrochemical test. The charge storage mechanism of V2CTx material during Na+ intercalation/deintercalation and the redox reaction of vanadium are studied using a combination of synchrotron based X-ray diffraction, hard X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS). Experimental evidence of a major contribution of redox reaction of vanadium to the charge storage and the reversible capacity of V2CTx during sodiation/desodiation process are provided through V K-edge XANES and V L2,3-edge sXAS results. A correlation between the CO32− content and the Na+ intercalation/deintercalation states in the V2CTx electrode observed from C and O K-edge in sXAS results implies that some additional charge storage reactions may take place between the Na+-intercalated V2CTx and the carbonate-based nonaqueous electrolyte. The results of this study provide valuable information for the further studies on V2CTx as anode material for Na-ion batteries and capacitors.

Abstract: We describe the performance of the Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA), the prototype for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope ASKAP. BETA is the first aperture synthesis radio telescope to use phased array feed technology, giving it the ability to electronically form up to nine dual-polarization beams. We report the methods developed for forming and measuring the beams, and the adaptations that have been made to the traditional calibration and imaging procedures in order to allow BETA to function as a multi-beam aperture synthesis telescope. We describe the commissioning of the instrument and present details of BETA's performance: sensitivity, beam characteristics, polarimetric properties and image quality. We summarise the astronomical science that it has produced and draw lessons from operating BETA that will be relevant to the commissioning and operation of the final ASKAP telescope., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASA

By cycling the array through 12 interleaved pointing positions and using 9 digitally formed beams we effectively mimic a traditional 1 hour x 108 pointing survey, covering 150 square degrees over 711 - 1015 MHz in 12 hours of observing time. Three such observations were executed over the course of a week. We verify the full bandwidth continuum imaging performance and stability of the system via self-consistency checks and comparisons to existing radio data. The combined three epoch image has arcminute resolution and a 1-sigma thermal noise level of 375 micro-Jy per beam, although the effective noise is a factor 3 higher due to residual sidelobe confusion. From this we derive a catalogue of 3,722 discrete radio components, using the 35 percent fractional bandwidth to measure in-band spectral indices for 1,037 of them. A search for transient events reveals one significantly variable source within the survey area. The survey covers approximately two-thirds of the Spitzer South Pole Telescope Deep Field. Abstract: We use observations from the Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA) of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope to search for transient radio sources in the field around the intermittent pulsar PSR J1107-5907. The pulsar is thought to switch between an "off" state in which no emission is detectable, a weak state and a strong state. We ran three independent transient detection pipelines on two-minute snapshot images from a 13 hour BETA observation in order to 1) study the emission from the pulsar, 2) search for other transient emission from elsewhere in the image and 3) to compare the results from the different transient detection pipelines. The pulsar was easily detected as a transient source and, over the course of the observations, it switched into the strong state three times giving a typical timescale between the strong emission states of 3.7 hours. After the first switch it remained in the strong state for almost 40 minutes. The other strong states lasted less than 4 minutes. The second state change was confirmed using observations with the Parkes radio telescope. No other transient events were found and we place constraints on the surface density of such events on these timescales. The high sensitivity Parkes observations enabled us to detect individual bright pulses during the weak state and to study the strong state over a wide observing band. 33. Transition-metal redox evolution in LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 electrodes at high potentials

Abstract: The mixed transition-metal layered compound, LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 (NMC532), is a promising high-energy cathode material. However, the required high-voltage (>4.3 V) cycling is accompanied by a rapid capacity fade associated with a complex redox mechanism that has not been clarified. Here we report soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy of NMC532 electrodes, both pristine and those charged to 4.2, 4.35, or 4.5 V in graphite/NMC532 cells. A quantitative sXAS analysis shows that about 20% of the nickel exists as Ni4+ in the as-synthesized NMC532. The Ni redox reaction contributes only to the experimental capacity obtained below 4.2 V, while Co redox reactions take place throughout the entire electrochemical cycling up to 4.5 V. In contrast to the changing ratio of the well-defined Ni2+, Ni3+ and Ni4+ ions, Co always displays ill-defined intermediate valence states in the charged NMC532 electrodes. This indicates an itinerant electron system in NMC electrodes related to the improved rate performance through Co doping. Additionally, about 20% of Ni2+ is found on the electrode surface at the high potential, which suggests that the electrode surface has either gone through surface reconstruction or reacted with the electrolyte at high voltage.

Abstract: We present HI imaging of the galaxy group IC 1459 carried out with six antennas of the Australian SKA Pathfinder equipped with phased-array feeds. We detect and resolve HI in eleven galaxies down to a column density of $\sim10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ inside a ~6 deg$^2$ field and with a resolution of ~1 arcmin on the sky and ~8 km/s in velocity. We present HI images, velocity fields and integrated spectra of all detections, and highlight the discovery of three HI clouds -- two in the proximity of the galaxy IC 5270 and one close to NGC 7418. Each cloud has an HI mass of $10^9$ M$_\odot$ and accounts for ~15% of the HI associated with its host galaxy. Available images at ultraviolet, optical and infrared wavelengths do not reveal any clear stellar counterpart of any of the clouds, suggesting that they are not gas-rich dwarf neighbours of IC 5270 and NGC 7418. Using Parkes data we find evidence of additional extended, low-column-density HI emission around IC 5270, indicating that the clouds are the tip of the iceberg of a larger system of gas surrounding this galaxy. This result adds to the body of evidence on the presence of intra-group gas within the IC 1459 group. Altogether, the HI found outside galaxies in this group amounts to several times $10^9$ M$_\odot$, at least 10% of the HI contained inside galaxies. Abstract: We report the discovery of a new 21-cm HI absorption system using commissioning data from the Boolardy Engineering Test Array of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Using the 711.5 - 1015.5 MHz band of ASKAP we were able to conduct a blind search for the 21-cm line in a continuous redshift range between $z = 0.4$ and 1.0, which has, until now, remained largely unexplored. The absorption line is detected at $z = 0.44$ towards the GHz-peaked spectrum radio source PKS B1740$-$517 and demonstrates ASKAP's excellent capability for performing a future wide-field survey for HI absorption at these redshifts. Optical spectroscopy and imaging using the Gemini-South telescope indicates that the HI gas is intrinsic to the host galaxy of the radio source. The narrow OIII emission lines show clear double-peaked structure, indicating either large-scale outflow or rotation of the ionized gas. Archival data from the \emph{XMM-Newton} satellite exhibit an absorbed X-ray spectrum that is consistent with a high column density obscuring medium around the active galactic nucleus. The HI absorption profile is complex, with four distinct components ranging in width from 5 to 300 km s$^{-1}$ and fractional depths from 0.2 to 20 per cent. In addition to systemic HI gas, in a circumnuclear disc or ring structure aligned with the radio jet, we find evidence for a possible broad outflow of neutral gas moving at a radial velocity of $v \sim 300$ km s$^{-1}$. We infer that the expanding young radio source ($t_{\rm age} \approx 2500$ yr) is cocooned within a dense medium and may be driving circumnuclear neutral gas in an outflow of $\sim$ 1 $\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: The presence of defects, including Stone–Wales (SW) defects, can lead to a deterioration of the mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In this study, a continuum-discrete multiscale coupling (CDMC) method is used to investigate the improvement of the pressure resistance of defective CNTs containing SW defects. By employing the moving least squares (MLS) approximation as a bridging mechanism, a seamless integration can be achieved between the deformation fields of discrete atomic configurations and their corresponding continuum models. Based on the CDMC method, a meshless computational framework, devoid of numerical integration, is formulated to accurately predict the buckling behaviors of defective CNTs. The results show that the position of SW defects almost has no effect on the anti-buckling ability of defective CNTs; and the pressure resistance of defective CNTs can be improved by coating/inserting CNT when the deference of the radius between the two nested CNTs is greater than 0.2nm. Changes of peripheral blood DNA methylation could be associated with malignancy but were mostly studied in Caucasians.Methods: Here, in a Chinese population, we performed mass spectrometry assays to investigate the association between very early stage LC and methylation levels of RAPSN in the peripheral blood by a case–control cohort using of 221 LC patients (93.2% LC at stage I) and 285 unrelated cancer free control individuals.Results: The odds ratios (ORs) of all CpG sites were evaluated for their risk to LC using inter-quartile analyses by logistic regression. In general, we observed an association between very early LC and decreased methylation of RAPSN_CpG_1.15 and RAPSN_CpG_3.4 (referring to Q4, OR range from 1.64 to 1.81, p< 0.05). Stratified by gender, while hypomethylation of RAPSN_CpG_1.15, RAPSN_CpG_3.4 and RAPSN_CpG_7.14 were associated with LC in males (referring to Q4, ORs range from 1.94 to 2.31, p< 0.05), RAPSN_CpG_2 and RAPSN_CpG_5 showed significantly lower methylation in female LC patients comparing to controls (referring to Q4, ORs range from 2.49 to 3.60, p< 0.05). 39. Prominent role of oxygen in the multiferroicity of DyMnO3 and TbMnO3: A resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy study

Abstract: Oxygen is known to play an important role in the multiferroicity of rare earth manganites; however, how this role changes with rare earth elements is still not fully understood. To address this question, we have used resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to study the F-type (0,τ,0) diffraction peak from the antiferromagnetic order in DyMnO3 and TbMnO3. We focus on the measurements at O K edge of these two manganites, supplemented by the results at Mn L2 and Dy M5 edge of DyMnO3. We show that the electronic states of different elements are coupled more strongly in DyMnO3 than in TbMnO3, presumably due to the stronger lattice distortion and the tendency to develop E-type antiferromagnetism in the ferroelectric state that promote the orbital hybridization. We also show that the anomaly in the correlation length of (0,τ,0) peak in DyMnO3 signifies the exchange interaction between Mn and rare earth spins. Our findings reveal the prominent role of oxygen orbitals in the multiferroicity of rare earth manganites and the distinct energetics between them.

Abstract: Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is important for understanding the topological properties of electronic states, and provides insight into the spin-polarized carriers of magnetic materials. AHE has been extensively studied in metallic, but not variable-range-hopping (VRH), regime. Here we report the experiments of both anomalous and ordinary Hall effect (OHE) in Mott and Efros VRH regimes. We found unusual scaling law of the AHE coefficient $Rah=aRxx^b$ with b>2, contrasting the OHE coefficient $Roh=cRxx^d$ with d<1. More strikingly, the sign of AHE coefficient changes with temperature with specific electron densities.

Abstract: The LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel is an appealing cathode material for next generation rechargeable Li-ion batteries due to its high operating voltage of ∼4.7 V (vs Li/Li+). Although it is widely believed that the full range of electrochemical cycling involves the redox of Ni(II)/(IV), it has not been experimentally clarified whether Ni(III) exists as the intermediate state or a double-electron transfer takes place. Here, combined with theoretical calculations, we show unambiguous spectroscopic evidence of the Ni(III) state when the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 electrode is half charged. This provides a direct verification of single-electron-transfer reactions in LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 upon cycling, namely, from Ni(II) to Ni(III), then to Ni(IV). Additionally, by virtue of its surface sensitivity, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy also reveals the electrochemically inactive Ni2+ and Mn2+ phases on the electrode surface. Our work provides the long-awaited clarification of the single-electron transfer mechanism in LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 electrodes. Furthermore, the experimental results serve as a benchmark for further spectroscopic characterizations of Ni-based battery electrodes.

43. Accelerating charging dynamics in sub-nanometer pores

Abstract: Having smaller energy density than batteries, supercapacitors have exceptional power density and cyclability. Their energy density can be increased using ionic liquids and electrodes with sub-nanometer pores, but this tends to reduce their power density and compromise the key advantage of supercapacitors. To help address this issue through material optimization, here we unravel the mechanisms of charging sub-nanometer pores with ionic liquids using molecular simulations, navigated by a phenomenological model. We show that charging of ionophilic pores is a diffusive process, often accompanied by overfilling followed by de-filling. In sharp contrast to conventional expectations, charging is fast because ion diffusion during charging can be an order of magnitude faster than in bulk, and charging itself is accelerated by the onset of collective modes. Further acceleration can be achieved using ionophobic pores by eliminating overfilling/de-filling and thus leading to charging behavior qualitatively different from that in conventional, ionophilic pores.

Abstract: Understanding and controlling the surface activities of electrode materials is critical for optimizing the battery performance, especially for nanoparticles with high surface area. Na0.44MnO2 is a promising positive electrode material for large-scale sodium-ion batteries. However, its application in grid-scale energy storage requires improvements in cycling stability at high rate. We are able to quantitatively determine the Mn evolution upon the potentials and cycle numbers. We reveal the Mn2+ formation on the top 10nm of Na0.44MnO2 particles when the electrochemical potential is below 2.6V, which does not occur in the bulk. A portion of the surface Mn2+ compounds become electrochemically inactive after extended cycles, contributing to the capacity fading. Based on the spectroscopic discoveries, we demonstrate that cycling Na0.44MnO2 above 3V could efficiently suppress the Mn2+ formation. formation.

Abstract: Using x-ray emission spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy, it has been possible to directly access the states in the unoccupied conduction bands that are involved with 5f and 6d covalency in oxidized uranium. By varying the oxidizing agent, the degree of 5f covalency can be manipulated and monitored, clearly and irrevocably establishing the importance of 5f covalency in the electronic structure of the key nuclear fuel, uranium dioxide.

Abstract: The evolution of electron correlation in Sr$_{x}$Ca$_{1-x}$VO$_3$ has been studied using a combination of bulk-sensitive resonant soft x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES), surface-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy (PES), and ab initio band structure calculations. We show that the effect of electron correlation is enhanced at the surface. Strong incoherent Hubbard subbands are found to lie ~ 20% closer in energy to the coherent quasiparticle features in surface-sensitive PES measurements compared with those from bulk-sensitive RXES, and a ~ 10% narrowing of the overall bandwidth at the surface is also observed.

RT-PCR and Western blot were then performed to confirm the findings. To investigate the mechanisms, S100A16 was knocked down by siRNA. Then, the sensitivity of M-RT4 to mitomycin C was analyzed by a cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) assay, and the molecular expression including epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related and apoptosis-related markers were also examined by Western blot. Based on the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) data, the prognostic value of S100A16 was also investigated.Results: There were six S100 proteins with differential expression, among which S100A16 was confirmed to be the only upregulated protein in M-RT4 cells. The expression of S100A16 was regulated by the EMT-related transcription factor Snail. Knockdown of S100A16 suppressed the AKT/Bcl-2 pathway to promote apoptosis, greatly sensitizing M-RT4 cells to mitomycin C. The expression of S100A16 was negatively correlated with the overall survival of bladder cancer patients.Conclusion: S100A16 contributes to the chemoresistance of NMIBC by promoting the AKT/Bcl-2-mediated anti-apoptosis effect and could be a potential prognostic marker and therapeutic target for NMIBC patients.Keywords: nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer, chemoresistance, S100A16, apoptosis, Snail
