This design leverages the tumor-targeting ability of IR780 to ensure selective accumulation of the nanoparticles in tumor cells, particularly within the mitochondria. The effect of the photothermal therapy-enhanced radiation therapy was also examined to assess the alleviation of hypoxia and the enhancement of radiation sensitivity.Results: The PIBD nanoparticles exhibited strong capacity in mitochondrial targeting and selective tumor accumulation. Upon activation by 808 nm laser irradiation, the nanoparticles effectively alleviated local hypoxia by photothermal effect enhanced blood supplying to improve oxygen content, thereby enhancing the ROS production for effective RT. Comparative studies revealed that PIBD-induced RT significantly outperformed conventional RT in treating hypoxic tumors.Conclusion: This design of tumor-targeting photothermal therapy-enhanced radiation therapy nanomedicine would advance the development of targeted drug delivery system for effective RT regardless of hypoxic microenvironment.Keywords: Bi-DTPA, IR780, radiotherapy, tumor microenvironment hypoxia, photothermal therapy

However, the hypoxic tumor microenvironment, especially deep-seated tumors distant from blood vessels, severely restricts therapeutic efficacy due to the oxygen-dependent manner of SDT.Methods: Herein, we report a novel ultrasonic cavitation effect-based therapeutic modality that is able to facilitate the hypoxia-tolerant SDT for inducing hypoxic tumor death. A tLyP-1 functionalized liposomes is fabricated, composed of hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether gadolinium as the sonosentizer and perfluoropentane (PFP) as the acoustic environment regulator. Moreover, the tLyP-1 functioned liposomes could achieve active tumor homing and effective deep-penetrating into hypoxic tumors. Upon low intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) irradiation, the acoustic droplet vaporization effect of PFP induced fast liquid-to-gas transition and quick bubbles explosion to generate hydroxyl radicals, efficiently promoting cell death in both normoxic and hypoxic microenvironment (acting as deep-penetration nanobomb, DPNB).Results: The loading of PFP is proved to significantly enhance the therapeutic efficacy of hypoxic tumors. In particular, these DPNB can also act as ultrasound, photoacoustic, magnetic resonance, and near-infrared fluorescence tetramodal imaging agents for guiding the therapeutic process.Conclusion: This study is the first report involving that liquid-to-gas transition based SDT has the potential to combat hypoxic tumors.Keywords: tetramodal imaging, low intensity focused ultrasound, sonodynamic therapy, deep-penetration, hypoxic tumors

Abstract

In this work we try to search for signals generated by ultra-heavy dark matter at the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) data. We look for possible gamma-ray by dark matter annihilation or decay from 16 dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the field of view of LHAASO. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the most promising targets for indirect detection of dark matter which have low fluxes of astrophysical $\gamma$-ray background while large amount of dark matter. By analyzing more than 700 days observational data at LHAASO, no significant dark matter signal from 1 TeV to 1 EeV is detected. Accordingly we derive the most stringent constraints on the ultra-heavy dark matter annihilation cross-section up to EeV. Abstract

The KM2A is the largest sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). It consists of 5216 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs). The data recorded by the EDs and MDs are used to reconstruct primary information of cosmic ray and gamma-ray showers. This information is used for physical analysis in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics. To ensure the reliability of the LHAASO-KM2A data, a three-level quality control system has been established. It is used to monitor the status of detector units, stability of reconstructed parameters and the performance of the array based on observations of the Crab Nebula and Moon shadow. This paper will introduce the control system and its application on the LHAASO-KM2A data collected from August 2021 to July 2023. During this period, the pointing and angular resolution of the array were stable. From the observations of the Moon shadow and Crab Nebula, the results achieved using the two methods are consistent with each other. According to the observation of the Crab Nebula at energies from 25 TeV to 100 TeV, the time averaged pointing errors are estimated to be $-0.003^{\circ} \pm 0.005^{\circ}$ and $0.001^{\circ} \pm 0.006^{\circ}$ in the R.A. and Dec directions, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The first source catalog of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory reported the detection of a very-high-energy gamma ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. In this paper a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this point-like source have been carried. The best-fit position of the TeV source ($\rm{RA}=185.05^{\circ}\pm0.04^{\circ}$, $\rm{Dec}=29.25^{\circ}\pm0.03^{\circ}$) is compatible with NGC 4278 within $\sim0.03$ degree. Variation analysis shows an indication of the variability at a few months level in the TeV band, which is consistent with low frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV $\gamma$-ray emissions from this low-luminosity AGN NGC 4278. The observations by LHAASO-WCDA during active period has a significance level of 8.8\,$\sigma$ with best-fit photon spectral index $\varGamma=2.56\pm0.14$ and a flux $f_{1-10\,\rm{TeV}}=(7.0\pm1.1_{\rm{sta}}\pm0.35_{\rm{syst}})\times10^{-13}\,\rm{photons\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, or approximately $5\%$ of the Crab Nebula. The discovery of VHE from NGC 4278 indicates that the compact, weak radio jet can efficiently accelerate particles and emit TeV photons., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

KM2A is one of the main sub-arrays of LHAASO, working on gamma ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics at energies above 10 TeV. Detector simulation is the important foundation for estimating detector performance and data analysis. It is a big challenge to simulate the KM2A detector in the framework of Geant4 due to the need to track numerous photons from a large number of detector units (>6000) with large altitude difference (30 m) and huge coverage (1.3 km^2). In this paper, the design of the KM2A simulation code G4KM2A based on Geant4 is introduced. The process of G4KM2A is optimized mainly in memory consumption to avoid memory overffow. Some simpliffcations are used to signiffcantly speed up the execution of G4KM2A. The running time is reduced by at least 30 times compared to full detector simulation. The particle distributions and the core/angle resolution comparison between simulation and experimental data of the full KM2A array are also presented, which show good agreement.

The aptamer (APT) AS1411 was outside the shell used as a molecular probe. Basic characterization and targeting abilities of the NPs were tested, and their cytotoxicity and biological safety in vivo were evaluated through CCK-8 assay and blood bio-chemical analysis. The photoacoustic (PA) and ultrasound (US) imaging system were used to assess the effects of AS1411-PLGA@FePc@PFP (A-FP NPs) as dual modal contrast agent in vitro and in vivo. The effects of photothermal therapy (PTT) in vitro and in vivo were evaluated through MCF-7 cells and tumor-bearing nude mouse models.Results: A-FP NPs, with good stability, great biocompatibility and low toxicity, were of 201.87 ± 1.60 nm in diameter, and have an active targeting effect on breast cancer cells and tissues. With the help of PA/US imaging, it was proved to be an excellent dual modal contrast agent for diagnosis and guidance of targeted therapy. Meanwhile, it can heat up under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation and has achieved obvious antitumor effect both in vitro and in vivo experiments.Conclusion: As a kind of nanomedicine, A-FP NPs can be used in the integration of diagnosis and treatment. To compromise metastasis and drug resistance, a nanoparticle IPPD-PHF2 (IR780/PLGA-PEI(Dox)-PHF2) has been engineered to accomplish efficient targeted epigenotherapy forced by PHF2-induced MET (mesenchymal to epithelial transition).Materials and Methods: IPPD-PHF2 nanoparticle was synthesized and characterized by several analytical techniques. The transfection efficiency of IPP-PHF2 (IR780/PLGA-PEI-PHF2) was compared with PP-PHF2 (PLGA-PEI-PHF2) in vitro by WB and in vivo by IHC, and the cytotoxicity of IPP was compared with Lipo2000 in vitro by CCK8 assay. The inhibition of cancer cell migration caused by PHF2-upregulation was tested by wound healing assay, and the enhanced chemotherapeutic sensitivity was detected by flow cytometry. Tumor-targeting property of IPPD-PHF2 was proved by fluorescent imaging in vivo with MDA-MB-231 tumor-bearing nude mice. Except for fluorescent imaging ability, considerable photoacoustic signals of IPPD-PHF2 at tumor sites were verified. The anti-tumor activity of IPPD-PHF2 was investigated using in vivo human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cell models.Results: Tumor-targeting nanoparticle IPPD-PHF2 had an average size of about 319.2 nm, a stable zeta potential at about 38 mV. The encapsulation efficiency of doxorubicin was around 39.28%, and the adsorption capacity of plasmids was about 64.804 μg/mg. Significant up-regulation of PHF2 induced MET and caused reduced migration as well as enhanced chemotherapeutic sensitivity. Either IPPD (IR780/PLGA-PEI(Dox)) or IPP-PHF2 (IR780/PLGA-PEI-PHF2) presented minor therapeutic effects, whereas IPPD-PHF2 specifically accumulated within tumors, showed extraordinary transfection efficiency specifically in tumor sites, acted as inhibitors of metastasis and proliferation, and presented good multimodality imaging potentials in vivo.Conclusion: IPPD-PHF2 NPs is a promising tool to bring epigenotherapy into a more practical era, and the potential application of harm-free multimodality imaging guidance is of great value.Keywords: targeted epigenotherapy, metastasis, drug resistance, multimodality imaging, breast cancer

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been linked with the development and progression of various cancers. In this study, aberrantly expressed lncRNA LINC01116, microRNA-136 (miR-136), and fibronectin1 (FN1) were identified in OSCC using a microarray analysis. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the role of LINC01116/miR-136/FN1 regulatory axis in OSCC.Methods: The gain-of-function and loss-of-function experiments in vitro were performed to alter the expression of LINC01116 and miR-136 in OSCC cells to elucidate their effects on cellular processes, including epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), viability, invasion, and migration. In addition, the interaction among LINC01116, miR-136, and FN1 was identified. Additionally, the tumorigenicity and lymph node metastasis (LNM) affected by LINC01116 were observed through xenograft tumor in nude mice.Results: LINC01116 and FN1 were abundant in both OSCC tissues and cells, while miR-136 was poorly expressed. LINC01116 could competitively bind to miR-136, which targets and negatively regulates FN1. Moreover, in response to LINC01116 silencing or miR-136 over-expression, OSCC cells exhibited diminished EMT process and inhibited cell viability, invasion, and migration in vitro, coupling with impaired tumorigenicity and LNM in vivo.Conclusion: The fundamental findings in this study collectively demonstrate that LINC01116 silencing may inhibit the progression of OSCC via the miR-136-mediated FN1 inhibition, highlighting a promising therapeutic strategy for OSCC treatment.Keywords: long non-coding RNA LINC01116, fibronectin 1, microRNA-136, oral squamous cell carcinoma, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, lymph node metastasis

However, it has been found that the osseointegration process of the HA/P66 implant takes a large amount of time because of the small amount of HA on its surface.Methods: To increase the amount of HA and aid faster osseointegration, we prepared a HA coating using a biomimetic process assisted by polydopamine (PDA) on the HA/P66 substrate. The surface properties of the substrate modified by PDA and HA were characterized, and the capacity of biomaterials for osteogenic induction was investigated both in vitro and in vivo. Results: The HA coating was successfully prepared on the HA/P66 substrate and verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The HA coating remained firmly attached to the underlying PDA-HA/P66 substrate even after strong ultrasound treatment for 1 h, and the calcium and phosphorus of the HA coating was continuously released in vitro in a slow manner. The formation of the HA coating on the PDA film greatly increased the hydrophilicity and surface roughness of HA/P66. In cell-based experiments, as compared with the HA/P66 substrate, the HA coating formation on the PDA film could facilitate the functions of C3H10T1/2 cells, including cell adhesion, proliferation, spreading, alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium nodule formation, and expression of osteogenic differentiation-related proteins. In addition, the HA/P66 scaffolds modified with PDA and HA coatings were implanted in rabbit femoral condyles. At 8 weeks after surgery, micro-computed tomography scanning (micro-CT) and hematoxylin–eosin (HE) staining revealed that more new bones were formed around the HA/P66 scaffold that was modified with a PDA-assisted HA coating. Conclusion: These results indicate that the preparation of a PDA-assisted HA coating by using a biomimetic process significantly improves the capacity of biomaterials for osteogenic induction. Materials and methods: A total of 35 New Zealand White rabbits were used in a bilateral femoral intercondylar fracture model and randomly divided into two groups. n-CDHA/PAA screws were used in the experimental group, and medical metal screws were used in the control group. The fracture condition, range of motion, and the screw push-out strength were assessed, and an arthroscopic examination of knee joint was performed at 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery. The biodegradation of the n-CDHA/PAA screws in vivo was tested through weighing, and changes in screw structure were assessed by X-ray diffraction at 12 weeks after surgery. Results: The general situation of all animals was good and showed no incision infection and dehiscence after surgery. X-ray scanning showed that significant callus growth was present in both groups at 4 weeks after surgery, and there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the Lane-Sandhu score between the experimental and control groups at all time points after surgery. There were no statistically significant differences (P>0.05) in the range of motion and Oswestry Arthroscopy Score of arthroscopic examination of the knee joints between the two groups. The screw push-out strength of the control group was stronger than that of the experimental group at 4 weeks after surgery (P0.05). The degradation tests showed that the n-CDHA/PAA screws degraded gradually after implantation, and the weight loss rate was approximately 16% at 12 weeks after surgery. The X-ray diffraction results showed that the crystal structure of the outer surface of the n-CDHA/PAA screw has changed at 12 weeks after surgery. Conclusion: The n-CDHA/PAA screw is an effective and safe implant as a potential internal fixation device for an intercondylar fracture of the femur, and its internal fixation effect was similar to that of medical metal screw. Abstract

We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at $3.67 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.15$ PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -$2.7413 \pm 0.0004 \pm 0.0050$, while above the knee, it is -$3.128 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.027$, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -$0.1200 \pm 0.0003 \pm 0.0341$. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

For decades, supernova remnants (SNRs) have been considered the prime sources of Galactic Cosmic rays (CRs). But whether SNRs can accelerate CR protons to PeV energies and thus dominate CR flux up to the knee is currently under intensive theoretical and phenomenological debate. The direct test of the ability of SNRs to operate as CR PeVatrons can be provided by ultrahigh-energy (UHE; $E_\gamma \geq 100$~TeV) $\gamma$-rays. In this context, the historical SNR Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is considered one of the most promising target for UHE observations. This paper presents the observation of Cas A and its vicinity by the LHAASO KM2A detector. The exceptional sensitivity of LHAASO KM2A in the UHE band, combined with the young age of Cas A, enabled us to derive stringent model-independent limits on the energy budget of UHE protons and nuclei accelerated by Cas A at any epoch after the explosion. Abstract

The highest energy gamma-rays from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have important implications for their radiation mechanism. Here we report for the first time the detection of gamma-rays up to 13 TeV from the brightest GRB 221009A by the Large High Altitude Air-shower Observatory (LHAASO). The LHAASO-KM2A detector registered more than 140 gamma-rays with energies above 3 TeV during 230$-$900s after the trigger. The intrinsic energy spectrum of gamma-rays can be described by a power-law after correcting for extragalactic background light (EBL) absorption. Such a hard spectrum challenges the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario of relativistic electrons for the afterglow emission above several TeV. Observations of gamma-rays up to 13 TeV from a source with a measured redshift of z=0.151 hints more transparency in intergalactic space than previously expected. In this study, graphene-reinforced nanohydroxyapatite/polyamide66 (nHA/PA66) bone screws were prepared. The results of scanning electron microscopy observation and X-ray diffraction data showed that both graphene and nHA had good dispersion in the PA66 matrix. In addition, the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the composites were significantly improved by 49.14% and 21.2%, respectively. The murine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell line C3H10T1/2 exhibited better adhesion and proliferation in graphene reinforced nHA/PA66 composite material compared to the nHA/PA66 composites. The cells developed more pseudopods, with greater cell density and a more distinguishable cytoskeletal structure. These results were confirmed by fluorescent staining and cell viability assays. After C3H10T1/2 cells were cultured in osteogenic differentiation medium for 7 and 14 days, the bone differentiation-related gene expression, alkaline phosphatase, and osteocalcin were significantly increased in the cells cocultured with graphene reinforced nHA/PA66. This result demonstrated the bone-inducing characteristics of this composite material, a finding that was further supported by alizarin red staining results. In addition, graphene reinforced nHA/PA66 bone screws were implanted in canine femoral condyles, and postoperative histology revealed no obvious damage to the liver, spleen, kidneys, brain, or other major organs. The bone tissue around the implant grew well and was directly connected to the implant. The soft tissues showed no obvious inflammatory reaction, which demonstrated the good biocompatibility of the screws. These observations indicate that graphene-reinforced nHA/PA66 composites have great potential for application in bone tissue engineering. Abstract

We present the first catalog of very-high energy and ultra-high energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) from March 2021 to September 2022 and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array (KM2A) from January 2020 to September 2022. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering declination from $-$20$^{\circ}$ to 80$^{\circ}$. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than $2^\circ$ and a significance of detection at $> 5\sigma$. Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ($E > 100$ TeV) emission at $> 4\sigma$ significance level. Abstract

The diffuse Galactic $\gamma$-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this work we report the measurements of diffuse $\gamma$-rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner ($15^{\circ}10$~TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of $-2.99\pm0.04$, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of $\sim3$ than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of $-2.99\pm0.07$ is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for $10\lesssim E\lesssim60$ TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. The RPMs were spherical with rough surfaces, and elevated amounts of rifapentine in the formulation markedly increased the particle size and drug loading, while decreased the size distribution and entrapment efficiency. The highest drug loading and encapsulation efficiency of RPMs were 23.93%±3.93% and 88.49%±8.49%, respectively. After the initial rapid drug release, the release rate gradually decreased, and approximately 80% of the encapsulated rifapentine was released after 30 days of incubation. Moreover, RPMs could effectively inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. With increasing rifapentine content, the inhibition zones were continuously enlarged while the minimal inhibitory concentration values decreased. These results suggested that RPMs were bioactive and controlled release delivery systems for the treatment of osteoarticular tuberculosis. However, the utility of biologic agents for cancer therapy has a short half-life, which can hardly deliver to and function in tumor sites efficiently. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have the potential to migrate to tumor sites. In this study, MSCs transfected with adenoviruses carrying the OPG gene (MSCs-OPG) were used via the tail vein to treat athymic nude mice (nu/nu) bearing osteosarcoma. In vivo and ex vivo images were used to validate the MSCs homing to tumors. The therapeutic effect for osteosarcoma was evaluated by observations on growth of tumors and bone destruction. The results showed that infected MSCs-OPG labeled with red fluorescent protein (RFP) can migrate to tumor sites and express OPG protein. The treatment by MSCs-OPG reduced the tumor growth and inhibited bone destruction in vivo. All these indicated that MSCs can deliver OPG to tumor sites, which could be a new direction of biological treatment for human osteosarcoma. Keywords: therapy, MSC, OPG, bone tumor

In this study, we prepared a new nondegradable bone plate composed of a ternary nano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide 66/glass fiber (n-HA/PA66/GF) composite. A breakage area on the n-HA/PA66/GF plate surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Its mechanical properties were investigated using bone-plate constructs and biocompatibility was evaluated in vitro using bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells. The results confirmed that adhesion between the n-HA/PA66 matrix and the glass fibers was strong, with only a few fibers pulled out at the site of breakage. Fractures fixed by the n-HA/PA66/GF plate showed lower stiffness and had satisfactory strength compared with rigid fixation using a titanium plate. Moreover, the results with regard to mesenchymal stem cell morphology, MTT assay, Alizarin Red S staining, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin showed that the n-HA/PA66/GF composite was suitable for attachment and proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells, and did not have a negative influence on matrix mineralization or osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. These observations indicate that the n-HA/PA66/GF plate has good biomechanical properties and biocompatibility, and may be considered a new option for internal fixation in orthopedic surgery. The structure, setting time, and compressive strength of the cement were investigated. The results showed that the cement with a liquid to powder ratio of 0.8 mL/g exhibited good injectability and appropriate setting time and mechanical properties. In vitro cell studies indicated that MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on the n-CDHA/MAC/CSH composite spread well and showed a good proliferation state. The alkaline phosphatase activity of the MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on the n-CDHA/MAC/CSH composite was significantly higher than that of the cells on pure CSH at 4 and 7 days of culture. The n-CDHA/MAC/CSH cement was implanted into critical size defects of the femoral condyle in rabbits to evaluate its biocompatibility and osteogenesis in vivo. Radiological and histological results indicated that introduction of the n-CDHA/MAC into CSH enhanced new bone formation, and the n-CDHA/MAC/CSH cement exhibited good biocompatibility and degradability. In conclusion, the injectable n-CDHA/MAC/CSH composite cement has a significant clinical advantage over pure CSH cement, and may be a promising bone graft substitute for the treatment of bone defects. 24. Electron and ion acceleration from femtosecond laser-plasma peeler scheme

Abstract

Using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we further investigate the electron and ion acceleration from femtosecond laser-plasma peeler scheme which was proposed in our recent paper (Shen et al 2021 Phys. Rev. X 11 041002). In addition to the standard setup where a laser pulse impinges on an edge of a single tape target, two new variants of the target, i.e., a parallel tape and a cross tape target, were proposed, where strong surface plasma waves can also be efficiently excited at the front edges of the target. By using a tabletop 200 TW-class laser pulse, we observe generation of high-flux, well-collimated, superponderomotive electrons. More importantly, quasimonoenergetic proton beams can always be obtained in all the three setups, while with the single tape case, the obtained proton beam has the highest peak energy and narrowest spectrum.

Abstract

The nuclear reactions in a plasma system with energy distribution deviated from Maxwellian are proved to have some unique characteristics including those in their product energy spectrum. Based on this, a new nuclear diagnostic scheme for measuring the nonthermal ion energy spectrum in high-energy-density plasmas is proposed, where the effective temperature and spectral peak of the nonthermal ion energy spectrum are uniquely determined by the spectral width and spectral peak of the product energy spectrum. Then, taking the laser-driven magnetic reconnection experiment as an example, according to the particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results coupled with the proton-boron (pB) fusion reaction, the pB reaction rate is increased by 4 orders of magnitude; meanwhile, the product spectral peak and spectral width are shifted towards higher energy, deviating from the predictions of the thermal equilibrium assumption, both of which are on account of the accelerated and heated suprathermal protons in magnetic reconnection. Furthermore, analyzing a series of simulation results, the new product spectrum analysis approach suitable for the parameter range of laser-driven magnetic reconnection is found., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

In this work, we investigate the generation of vortex $\gamma$ photons via nonlinear Compton scattering of ultrarelativistic electrons in a circularly polarized laser pulse. We develop a quantum electrodynamics scattering theory that explicitly addresses the multiphoton absorption and the angular momentum transfer mechanism. In pulsed laser fields, we unveil the vortex phase structure of the scattering matrix element, discuss how the vortex phase could be transferred to the radiated photon, and derive the radiation rate of the vortex $\gamma$ photon. We numerically examine the energy spectra and beam characteristics of the radiation, while also investigating the influence of finite laser pulses on the angular momentum and energy distribution of the emitted vortex $\gamma$ photons., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has three sub-arrays, KM2A, WCDA and WFCTA. The flux variations of cosmic ray air showers were studied by analyzing the KM2A data during the thunderstorm on 10 June 2021. The number of shower events that meet the trigger conditions increases significantly in atmospheric electric fields, with maximum fractional increase of 20%. The variations of trigger rates (increases or decreases) are found to be strongly dependent on the primary zenith angle. The flux of secondary particles increases significantly, following a similar trend with that of the shower events. To better understand the observed behavior, Monte Carlo simulations are performed with CORSIKA and G4KM2A (a code based on GEANT4). We find that the experimental data (in saturated negative fields) are in good agreement with simulations, assuming the presence of a uniform upward electric field of 700 V/cm with a thickness of 1500 m in the atmosphere above the observation level. Due to the acceleration/deceleration and deflection by the atmospheric electric field, the number of secondary particles with energy above the detector threshold is modified, resulting in the changes in shower detection rate., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The interaction between the supersonic jet and background can influence the process of star formation, and this interaction also results in a change of the jet's velocity, direction and density through shock waves. However, due to the limitations of current astronomical facilities, the fine shock structure and the detailed interaction process still remain unclear. Here we investigate the plasma dynamics under different collision states through laser-driven experiments. A double-shock structure is shown in the optical diagnosis for collision case, but the integrated self-emitting X-ray characteristic is different. For solid plastic hemisphere obstacle, two-layer shock emission is observed, and for the relatively low-density laser-driven plasma core, only one shock emission is shown. And the plasma jets are deflected by $50 ^{\circ}$ through the interaction with the high-density background in both cases. For collisionless cases, filament structures are observed, and the mean width of filaments is roughly the same as the ion skin depth. High-energy electrons are observed in all interaction cases. We present the detailed process of the shock formation and filament instability through 2D/3D hydrodynamic simulations and particle-in-cell simulations respectively. Our results can also be applied to explain the shock structure in the Herbig-Haro (HH) 110/270 system, and the experiments indicate that the impact point may be pushed into the inside part of the cloud.

Abstract

Magnetic reconnection, breaking and reorganization of magnetic field topology, is a fundamental process for rapid release of magnetic energy into plasma particles that occurs pervasively throughout the universe. In most natural circumstances, the plasma properties on either side of the reconnection layer are asymmetric, in particular for the collision rates that are associated with a combination of density and temperature and critically determine the reconnection mechanism. To date, all laboratory experiments on magnetic reconnections have been limited to purely collisional or collisionless regimes. Here, we report a well-designed experimental investigation on asymmetric magnetic reconnections in a novel hybrid collisional-collisionless regime by interactions between laser-ablated Cu and CH plasmas. We show that the growth rate of the tearing instability in such a hybrid regime is still extremely large, resulting in rapid formation of multiple plasmoids, lower than that in the purely collisionless regime but much higher than the collisional case. In addition, we, for the first time, directly observe the topology evolutions of the whole process of plasmoid-dominated magnetic reconnections by using highly-resolved proton radiography.

Abstract

The Crab pulsar and the surrounding nebula powered by the pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind is a bright source of gamma-rays carrying crucial information about this complex conglomerate. We report the detection of $\gamma$-rays with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades, from $5\times 10^{-4}$ to $1.1$ petaelectronvolt (PeV). The ultra-high-energy photons exhibit the presence of a PeV electron accelerator (a pevatron) with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the absolute theoretical limit. Assuming that unpulsed $\gamma$-rays are produced at the termination of the pulsar's wind, we constrain the pevatron's size, between $0.025$ and $0.1$ pc, and the magnetic field $\approx 110 \mu$G. The production rate of PeV electrons, $2.5 \times 10^{36}$ erg $\rm s^{-1}$, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar's spin-down luminosity, although we do not exclude a non-negligible contribution of PeV protons to the production of the highest energy $\gamma$-rays., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; Published in Science

Abstract

In laser-drive ICF, hybrid drive (HD) combined direct drive (DD) and indirect drive (ID) offers a smoothed HD pressure $P_{HD}$, far higher than the ablation pressure in ID and DD, to suppress hydrodynamic instabilities. In this letter, simulations of a new robust HD ignition target show that maximal HD pressure as high as $P_{HD} \sim$ 650 Mbar driven by a novel "bulldozer" effect is achieved, resulting in nonstagnation hotspot ignition at the convergence ratio $C_r \sim $23, and finally, fusion energy gain $\sim$ 10 in total laser energy = 1.42 MJ. Two-dimensional simulations have confirmed that hydrodynamic instabilities are suppressed. A well-fitted scale of maximal HD pressure $P_{HD}$ (Mbar)= $BE_{DD}^{1/4} T_r$ is found from simulations of different targets and laser energies as long as $T_r> 160$ eV, where B is the constant depending on ablator materials, $E_{DD}$ in kJ is DD laser energy and $T_r$ in 100 eV is radiation temperature depending on ID laser energy $E_{ID}$. $P_{HD}\geq$ 450 Mbar is requested for hotspot ignition. This scale from "bulldozer" effect is also available as $E_{DD}$ is reduced to kJ. Experiments have verified $P_{HD}$ about 3.5 times radiation ablation pressure for CH ablator using $E_{ID}=43$ kJ ($T_r \simeq$200 eV) and $E_{DD}$=3.6 kJ, also shown that both backscattering fraction and hot-electron energy fraction for DD laser intensity $\sim 1.8 \times 10^{15} {\rm w\cdot cm^{-2}}$ are about a third of the traditional DD laser-plasma interaction, Comment: 10 pages, 4 Postscript figures

33. Synergistic Longitudinal Acceleration and Transverse Oscillation in High-order Harmonic Generation

Abstract

We propose and demonstrate that relativistic harmonics with a slowly decaying power law are generated from a femtosecond lase pulse incident parallel to a micro-scale overdense plasma. It is shown that due to the excitation of a strong surface wave, dense electron nanobunches are continuously accelerated forward while oscillating in the transverse laser field. Even around the stationary phase point, relativistic gamma factors of the nanobunches increase considerably, leading to a much stronger attosecond burst, compared to the case with constant gamma. Our two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analytical theory show that this synergistic function promises a power-law harmonic spectrum $I_n/I_0 = n^{-1}$. This is much flatter than the other well-known radiation mechanisms and paves the way to unprecedentedly large energy attosecond pulses.

34. Monoenergetic High-energy Ion Source via Femtosecond Laser Incident Parallel to a Microplate

Abstract

Using fully three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we show that readily available femtosecond laser systems can stably generate proton beams with hundred MeV energy and low spread at $\sim1\%$ level by parallel irradiation of a tens of micrometers long plasma plate. As the laser pulse sweeps along the plate, it drags out a huge charge ($\sim$100 nC) of collimated energetic electrons and accelerates them along the plate surface to superponderomotive energies. When this dense electron current arrives at the rear end of the plate, it induces a strong electrostatic field. Due to the excessive space charge of electrons, the longitudinal field becomes bunching while the transverse field is focusing. Together, this leads to a highly monoenergetic energy spectrum and much higher proton energy as compared to simulation results from typical target normal sheath acceleration and radiation pressure acceleration at the same laser parameters.

Abstract

A new regime in the interaction of a two-colour ($\omega$,$2\omega$) laser with a nanometre-scale foil is identified, resulting in the emission of extremely intense, isolated attosecond pulses - even in the case of multi-cycle lasers. For foils irradiated by lasers exceeding the blow-out field strength (i.e. capable of fully separating electrons from the ion background), the addition of a second harmonic field results in the stabilization of the foil up to the blow-out intensity. This is then followed by a sharp transition to transparency that essentially occurs in a single optical cycle. During the transition cycle, a dense, nanometre-scale electron bunch is accelerated to relativistic velocities and emits a single, strong attosecond pulse with a peak intensity approaching that of the laser field.

Abstract

Imposing an external magnetic field in short-pulse intense laser-plasma interaction is of broad scientific interest in related plasma research areas. We propose a simple method using a virtual current layer by introducing an extra current density term to simulate the external magnetic field, and demonstrate it with three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The field distribution and its evolution in sub-picosecond time scale are obtained. The magnetization process takes a much longer time than that of laser-plasma interaction due to plasma diamagnetism arising from collective response. Abstract

A scheme for controlling the direction of energetic proton beam driven by intense laser pulse is proposed. Simulations show that a precisely directed and collimated proton bunch can be produced by a sub-picosecond laser pulse interacting with a target consisting of a thin solid-density disk foil with a solenoid coil attached to its back at the desired angle. It is found that two partially overlapping sheath fields are induced. As a result, the accelerated protons are directed parallel to the axis of the solenoid, and their spread angle is also reduced by the overlapping sheath fields. The proton properties can thus be controlled by manipulating the solenoid parameters. Abstract

The kinetic effects of magnetic fields on the transport of relativistic jet in the intergalactic medium remain uncertain, especially for their perpendicular component. By particle-in-cell simulations, we find that when only jet electrons are fully magnetized, they are directly deflected by the magnetic field, but jet protons are mainly dragged by collective charge-separation electric field. However, when both electrons and protons are fully magnetized, the contrary is the case. Their balance tremendously distorts the jet density and electromagnetic fields, leading to enormous energy exchange between different species and fields. As a result, the electron spectrum energy distribution (SED) gets reshaped and the power law slope of the SED decreases as the magnetic field strength increases. In other words, we may infer that magnetic fields around the relativistic jet play a crucial role in shaping the observed SED.

Abstract

The composition of the astrophysical relativistic jets remains uncertain. By kinetic particle-in-cell simulations, we show that the baryon component in the jet, or the so-called baryon loading effect (BLE), heavily affects relativistic jets transport dynamics in the interstellar medium. On the one hand, with the BLE, relativistic jets can transport in a much longer distance, because jet electrons draw a significant amount of energy from jet baryons via the Buneman-induced electrostatic waves and the Weibel-mediated collisionless shock; on the other hand, the jet electron phase space distribution may transform from a bottom-wide-single-peak structure to a center-wide-multiple-peak one by increasing the BLE, which largely influences the observed jet morphology. Implications for related astrophysical studies are also discussed.

Abstract

Scaling laws of ion acceleration in ultrathin foils driven by radiation pressure of intense laser pulses are investigated by theoretical analysis and two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Considering the instabilities are inevitable during laser plasma interaction, the maximum energy of ions should have two contributions: the bulk acceleration driven by radiation pressure and the sheath acceleration in the moving foil reference induced by hot electrons. A theoretical model is proposed to quantitatively explain the results that the cutoff energy and energy spread are larger than the predictions of "light sail" model, observed in simulations and experiments for a large range of laser and target parameters. Abstract

Production of the huge longitudinal magnetic fields by using an ultraintense laser pulse irradiating a solenoid target is considered. Through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, it is shown that the longitudinal magnetic field up to ten kilotesla can be observed in the ultraintense laser-solenoid target interactions. The finding is associated with both fast and return electron currents in the solenoid target. Abstract

Dimensional effects in particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation of target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) of protons are considered. As the spatial divergence of the laser-accelerated hot sheath electrons and the resulting space-charge electric field on the target backside depend on the spatial dimension, the maximum energy of the accelerated protons obtained from three-dimensional (3D) simulations is usually much less that from two-dimensional (2D) simulations. By closely examining the TNSA of protons in 2D and 3D PIC simulations, we deduce an empirical ratio between the maximum proton energies obtained from the 2D and 3D simulations. This ratio may be useful for estimating the maximum proton energy in realistic (3D) TNSA from the results of the corresponding 2D simulation. Abstract

The dynamics of electron injection in the direct laser acceleration (DLA) regime was investigated by means of three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and theoretical analysis. It is shown that when an ultra-intense laser pulse propagates into a near-critical density or relativistically transparent plasma, the longitudinal charge-separation electric field excites an ion wave. The ion wave modulates the local electric field and acts as a set of potential wells to guide the electrons, located on the edge of the plasma channel, to the central region, where the DLA takes place later on. In addition, it is pointed out that the self-generated azimuthal magnetic fields tend to suppress the injection process of electrons by deflecting them away from the laser field region. 46. Anomalous material-dependent transport of focused, laser-driven proton beams.

Abstract

Intense lasers can accelerate protons in sufficient numbers and energy that the resulting beam can heat materials to exotic warm (10 s of eV temperature) states. Here we show with experimental data that a laser-driven proton beam focused onto a target heated it in a localized spot with size strongly dependent upon material and as small as 35 μm radius. Simulations indicate that cold stopping power values cannot model the intense proton beam transport in solid targets well enough to match the large differences observed. In the experiment a 74 J, 670 fs laser drove a focusing proton beam that transported through different thicknesses of solid Mylar, Al, Cu or Au, eventually heating a rear, thin, Au witness layer. The XUV emission seen from the rear of the Au indicated a clear dependence of proton beam transport upon atomic number, Z, of the transport layer: a larger and brighter emission spot was measured after proton transport through the lower Z foils even with equal mass density for supposed equivalent proton stopping range. Beam transport dynamics pertaining to the observed heated spot were investigated numerically with a particle-in-cell (PIC) code. In simulations protons moving through an Al transport layer result in higher Au temperature responsible for higher Au radiant emittance compared to a Cu transport case. The inferred finding that proton stopping varies with temperature in different materials, considerably changing the beam heating profile, can guide applications seeking to controllably heat targets with intense proton beams.

47. Mediating Effect of the NLR on the Relationship Between HbA1c and Left Atrial Stiffness in Overweight Patients With Hypertension.

Abstract

BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the association between hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and left atrial (LA) stiffness in patients with hypertension and to explore the mediating effect of the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on this association. METHODS Essential hypertensive patients (n = 292) aged 18–83 years were enrolled and divided into two groups based on the LA stiffness index (LASI): Group I (LASI ≤ 0.32, n = 146) and Group II (LASI > 0.32, n = 146). The LASI was defined as the ratio of early diastolic transmitral flow velocity/lateral mitral annulus myocardial velocity (E / e ʹ) to LA reservoir strain. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to determine the independent predictors of the LASI. RESULTS Age, BMI, SBP, HbA1c, CRP, and NLR were significantly greater in Group II than in Group I (P < 0.05). Additionally, Group II had a greater LA volume index (LAVI), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), and early diastolic transmitral flow velocity/lateral mitral annulus myocardial velocity (E / e ʹ) and lower LA reservoir, conduit, and booster pump strains than Group I (P  < 0.001). Univariate and multivariate linear regression models revealed that age, SBP, HbA1c, and the NLR were independently associated with the LASI. Further mediation analysis was performed to determine the mediating effect of the NLR on the association between HbA1c and the LASI and revealed that the NLR had a mediating role only in overweight hypertensive patients, and the proportion of the mediating effect was 21.9%. CONCLUSIONS The NLR was independently correlated with the LASI and played a mediating role in the relationship between HbA1c and the LASI in overweight hypertensive patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The radiation reaction effects on electron dynamics in counter-propagating circularly polarized laser beams are investigated through the linearization theorem and the results are in great agreement with numeric solutions. For the first time, the properties of fixed points in electron phase-space were analyzed with linear stability theory, showing that center nodes will become attractors if the classical radiation reaction is considered. Electron dynamics are significantly affected by the properties of the fixed points and the electron phase-space densities are found to be increasing exponentially near the attractors. The density growth rates are derived theoretically and further verified by particle-in-cell simulations, which can be detected in experiments to explore the effects of radiation reaction qualitatively. The attractor can also facilitate to realize a series of nanometer-scaled flying electron slices via adjusting the colliding laser frequencies.

Abstract

The birth of attosecond light sources is expected to inspire a breakthrough in ultrafast optics, which may extend human real-time measurement and control techniques into atomic-scale electronic dynamics. For applications, it is essential to obtain a single attosecond pulse of high intensity, large photon energy and short duration. Here we show that single 100-terawatt attosecond X-ray light pulse with intensity ${1\times10^{21}}\textrm{W}/\textrm{cm}^{{ 2}}$ and duration ${7.9} \textrm{as}$ can be produced by intense laser irradiation on a capacitor-nanofoil target composed of two separate nanofoils. In the interaction, a strong electrostatic potential develops between two nanofoils, which drags electrons out of the second foil and piles them up in vacuum, forming an ultradense relativistic electron nanobunch. This nanobunch exists in only half a laser cycle and smears out in others, resulting in coherent synchrotron emission of a single pulse.
