Abstract Background Video double-lumen tube (VDLT) intubation in lateral position is a potential alternative to intubation in supine position in patients undergoing thoracic surgery. This non-inferiority trial assessed the efficacy and safety of VDLT intubation in lateral position. Methods Patients (18–70 yr) undergoing right thoracoscopic lung surgery were randomized to either the left lateral position group (group L) or the supine position group (group S). The VDLT was placed under video larygoscopy. The primary endpoint was the intubation time. Secondary endpoints included VDLT displacement rate, intubation failure rate, the satisfaction of surgeon and nurse, and intubation-related adverse events. Results The analysis covered 80 patients. The total intubation time was 52.0 [20.4]s in group L and 34.3 [13.2]s in group S, with a mean difference of 17.6 s [95% confidence interval (CI): 9.9 s to 25.3 s; P = 0.050], failing to demonstrate non-inferiority with a non-inferiority margin of 10 s. Group L, compared with group S, had significantly lower VDLT displacement rate (P = 0.017) and higher nurse satisfaction (P = 0.026). No intubation failure occurred in any group. Intubation complications (P = 0.802) and surgeon satisfaction (P = 0.415) were comparable between two groups. Conclusions The lateral VDLT intubation took longer time than in the supine position, and non-inferiority was not achieved. The incidence of displacement as the secondary endpoint was lower in the L group, possibly due to changing body positions beforehand. The indication of lateral VDLT intubation should be based on a balance between the safety of airway management and the lower incidence of displacement. IntroductionSurfactant Protein C gene (SFTPC) is a marker gene of alveolar type 2 cells (AT2), which are the key structures of alveoli. Mutations or deletions in SFTPC cause idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Importantly, IPF is an independent risk factor for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It suggests that abnormal expression of SFTPC may be relevant to development of NSCLC. However, the function and mechanism of SFTPC in NSCLC are still poor understood until now.MethodsThe expression of SFTPC and the relationship between SFTPC and prognosis of NSCLC were analyzed in TCGA database and our collected clinical NSCLC tissues. Subsequently, the function and mechanism of SFTPC in NSCLC were explored by RNA-sequence, qRT-PCR, Western blot, Immunohistochemical, Wound-healing, Millicell, Transwell assays and mouse tumor xenograft model.ResultsSFTPC was dramatically downregulated in NSCLC tissues from TCGA database and 40 out of 46 collected clinical LUAD tissues compared with adjacent non-tumor tissues. Low expression of SFTPC was associated with poor prognosis of LUAD by TCGA database. Importantly, we confirmed that overexpression of SFTPC significantly inhibited Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) process of NSCLC cells by upregulating SOX7 and then inactivating WNT/β-catenin pathway in vitro and in vivo. Particularly, we discovered that low expression of SFTPC was associated with EMT process and low expression of SOX7 in NSCLC tissues.ConclusionOur study revealed a novel mechanism of SFTPC in NSCLC development. Meanwhile, it also might provide a new clue for exploring the molecular mechanism about NSCLC development in patients with IPF in the future.

Abstract Despite epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) have shown remarkable efficacy in patients with EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), acquired resistance inevitably develops, limiting clinical efficacy. We found that TET2 was poly-ubiquitinated by E3 ligase CUL7FBXW11 and degraded in EGFR-TKI resistant NSCLC cells. Genetic perturbation of TET2 rendered parental cells more tolerant to TKI treatment. TET2 was stabilized by MEK1 phosphorylation at Ser 1107, while MEK1 inactivation promoted its proteasome degradation by enhancing the recruitment of CUL7FBXW11. Loss of TET2 resulted in the upregulation of TNF/NF-κB signaling that confers the EGFR-TKI resistance. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of NF-κB attenuate the TKI resistance both in vitro and in vivo. Our findings exemplified how a cell growth controlling kinase MEK1 leveraged the epigenetic homeostasis by regulating TET2, and demonstrated an alternative path of non-mutational acquired EGFR-TKI resistance modulated by TET2 deficiency. Therefore, combined strategy exploiting EGFR-TKI and inhibitors of TET2/NF-κB axis holds therapeutic potential for treating NSCLC patients who suffered from this resistance.

Abstract Background Increasing attention has been raised on the surgical option for lung cancer patients aged ≥75 years, however, few studies have focused on whether uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is safe and feasible for these patients. This study aimed to evaluate short-term results of uniportal versus three-port VATS for the treatment of lung cancer patients aged ≥75 years. Methods We retrospectively evaluated 582 lung cancer patients (≥75 years) who underwent uniportal or three-port VATS from August 2007 to August 2021 based on the Western China Lung Cancer Database. The baseline and perioperative outcomes between uniportal and three-port VATS were compared in the whole cohort (WC) and the patients undergoing lobectomy (lobectomy cohort, LC) respectively. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to minimize confounding bias between the uniportal and three-port cohorts in WC and LC. Results Intraoperative blood loss was significantly less in the uniportal than three-port LC (50 mL vs. 83 mL, P = 0.007) before PSM and relatively less in the uniportal than three-port LC (50 mL vs. 83 mL, P = 0.05) after PSM. Significantly more lymph nodes harvested (13 vs. 9, P = 0.007) were found in the uniportal than three-port LC after PSM. In addition, in WC and LC, there were no significant differences between uniportal and three-port cohorts in terms of operation time, the rate of conversion to thoracotomy during surgery, nodal treatments (dissection or sampling or not), the overall number of lymph node stations dissected, postoperative complications, volume and duration of postoperative thoracic drainage, hospital stay after operation and hospitalization expenses before and after PSM (P > 0.05). Objectives: To synthesize the clinical experience of patients with COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or pulmonary fibrosis (PF) receiving lung transplantation (LTx) and compare the characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 LTx patients. Methods: A literature search of online databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Wan Fang databases) was performed regarding LTx for COVID-19–associated ARDS or PF. This study was registered on PROSPERO (CRD2024507647). Results: Eight eligible studies were included with 478 COVID-19 LTx patients and 163 non-COVID-19 LTx patients. In COVID-19 LTx patients, the pooled hospital mortality and follow-up survival rate was 0.00% (95% CI 0.00-0.03) and 87.40% (95% CI 0.76-0.96). Compared to non-COVID-19 LTx patients, COVID-19 LTx patients were associated with significantly higher rate of primary graft dysfunction (odds ratio [OR] 8.72, 95% CI 3.54-21.47, P < 0.001) but significantly higher follow-up survival rate (OR 2.48, 95% CI 1.02-6.01, P = 0.04), within an overall similar follow-up period. Conclusions: For patients with COVID-19–associated ARDS or PF, LTx offers acceptable short-term outcomes and is suggested as a viable lifesaving treatment.

Dysfunction of the vascular angiocrine system is critically involved in regenerative defects and fibrosis of injured organs. Previous studies have identified various angiocrine factors and found that risk factors such as aging and metabolic disorders can disturb the vascular angiocrine system in fibrotic organs. One existing key gap is what sense the fibrotic risk to modulate the vascular angiocrine system in organ fibrosis. Here, using human and mouse data, we discovered that the metabolic pathway hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a sensor of fibrotic stress and serves as a key mechanism upregulating the angiocrine factor plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) in endothelial cells to participate in lung fibrosis. Activation of the metabolic sensor AMPK was inhibited in endothelial cells of fibrotic lungs, and AMPK inactivation was correlated with enriched fibrotic signature and reduced lung functions in humans. The inactivation of endothelial AMPK accelerated lung fibrosis in mice, while the activation of endothelial AMPK with metformin alleviated lung fibrosis. In fibrotic lungs, endothelial AMPK inactivation led to YAP activation and overexpression of the angiocrine factor PAI-1, which was positively correlated with the fibrotic signature in human fibrotic lungs and inhibition of PAI-1 with Tiplaxtinin mitigated lung fibrosis. Further study identified that the deficiency of the antioxidative gas metabolite H2S accounted for the inactivation of AMPK and activation of YAP-PAI-1 signaling in endothelial cells of fibrotic lungs. H2S deficiency was involved in human lung fibrosis and H2S supplement reversed mouse lung fibrosis in an endothelial AMPK-dependent manner. These findings provide new insight into the mechanism underlying the deregulation of the vascular angiocrine system in fibrotic organs.

Abstract Background Selenium is an essential trace element in the human body. In epidemiological and clinical studies, Se supplementation significantly reduced the incidence of lung cancer in individuals with low baseline Se levels. The significant action of selenium is based on the selenium‐containing protein as a mediator. Of note, the previous studies reported that the expression of selenium‐binding protein 1 (SELENBP1) was obviously decreased in many human cancer tissues including non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, its roles in the origin and development of NSCLC are still unclear. Methods The expression of SELENBP1 was measured by qRT‐PCR, Western blotting and IHC in our collected clinical NSCLC tissues and cell lines. Next, the CCK‐8, colony formation, wound‐haeling, Millicell, Transwell, FCM assay, and in vivo xenograft model were performed to explore the function of SELENBP1 in NSCLC. The molecular mechanisms of SELENBP1 were investigated by Western blotting or IF assay. Results We further identified that the expression of SELENBP1 was significantly decreased in NSCLC tissues in TCGA database and 45 out of 59 collected clinical NSCLC tissues compared with adjacent nontumor tissues, as well as in four NSCLC cell lines compared with normal lung cells. Particularly, we unexpectedly discovered that SELENBP1 was obviously expressed in alveolar type 2 (AT‐II) cells for the first time. Then, a series of in vitro experiments uncovered that overexpression of SELENBP1 inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of NSCLC cells, and induced cell apoptosis. Moreover, overexpression of SELENBP1 also inhibited growth and induced apoptosis of NSCLC cells in vivo. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that overexpression of SELENBP1 inhibited the malignant characteristics of NSCLC cells in part via inactivating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signal pathway. Meanwhile, we found that overexpression of SELENBP1 inducing the apoptosis of NSCLC cells was associated with the activation of caspase‐3 signaling pathway under nonhigh level of oxidative stress, but overexpression of SELENBP1 facilitating the cell apoptosis might be related to its combining with GPX1 and colocalizing in the nucleus under high level of oxidative stress. Conclusions Our findings highlighted that SELENBP1 was an important tumor suppressor during the origin and development of NSCLC. It may help to discover novel biomarkers or drug therapy targets for NSCLC.

Abstract Background Chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) directly causes an abysmal long-term prognosis after lung transplantation (LTx), but effective and safe drugs are not available. Metformin exhibits high therapeutic potential due to its antifibrotic and immunomodulatory effects; however, it is unclear whether metformin exerts a therapeutic effect in CLAD. We sought to investigate the effect of metformin on CLAD based on rat models. Methods Allogeneic LTx rats were treated with Cyclosporin A (CsA) in the first week, followed by metformin, CsA, or vehicle treatment. Syngeneic LTx rats received only vehicles. All rats were sacrificed on post-transplant week 4. Pathology of lung graft, spleen, and thymus, extent of lung fibrosis, activity of profibrotic cytokines and signaling pathway, adaptive immunity, and AMPK activity were then studied. Results Allogeneic recipients without maintenance CsA treatment manifested CLAD pathological characteristics, but these changes were not observed in rats treated with metformin. For the antifibrotic effect, metformin suppressed the fibrosis extent and profibrotic cytokine expression in lung grafts. Regarding immunomodulatory effect, metformin reduced T- and B-cell infiltration in lung grafts, spleen and thymus weights, the T- and B-cell zone areas in the spleen, and the thymic medullary area. In addition, metformin activated AMPK in lung allografts and in α-SMA+ cells and T cells in the lung grafts. Conclusions Metformin attenuates CLAD in rat models, which could be attributed to the antifibrotic and immunomodulatory effects. AMPK activation suggests the potential molecular mechanism. Our study provides an experimental rationale for further clinical trials.

BackgroundIndocyanine green (ICG) is a nontoxic, albumin-bound, liver-metabolized fluorescent iodide dye that has been widely utilized in clinical applications since the mid-1950s. However, after the 1970s, in-depth research on the fluorescence properties of ICG greatly expanded its application in the medical field.MethodsIn our mini-review, we searched the relevant literature on common oncology surgeries from PubMed, including lung cancer, breast cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, and pituitary tumors, using keywords such as indocyanine green, fluorescence imaging technology, and near-infrared fluorescence imaging. In addition, the application of targeted ICG photothermal technology in tumor therapy is briefly mentioned.ResultsIn this mini-review, we analyzed studies on ICG fluorescence imaging in common surgical oncology and offered a thorough analysis of each form of cancer or tumor.ConclusionICG has demonstrated significant potential in the detection and treatment of tumors in current clinical practice, although many applications are still in the preliminary stages, and multicenter studies are still required to more precisely define its indications, effectiveness, and safety.

Abstract Background Congenital lobal emphysema (CLE) is a developmental lung abnormality usually diagnosed in the neonatal period and is rarely observed in adults. Adults with CLE are usually asymptomatic and only a small fraction may present with coughing, recurrent pneumonia and respiratory distress. In imaging studies, the most frequently affected lobe of CLE is the left upper lobe, followed by the right middle lobe. However, multilobar involvement with severe mediastinal shift is extremely rare. Case presentation We report a case of fatal CLE in a 28-year-old puerpera with postpartum respiratory failure. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed emphysema of the right upper, middle and lower lobes resulting in adjacent atelectasis. Hyperinflation of the right upper lobe crossed the midline, leading to a deviation of the mediastinal structure to the left hemithorax and severe compression of the left lung. Conclusions Early and timely diagnosis of CLE with routine follow-up is necessary for patients. CLE, especially with multilobar involvement or mediastinal shift, could be life-threatening and should be promptly and aggressively treated to prevent severe complications.

Abstract Background The optimal analgesic strategy for surgical pain after lobectomy remains undefined. To compare the combination of flurbiprofen axetil and dezocine with flurbiprofen axetil alone and dezocine alone, in post-lobectomy patients. Methods A single-center, parallel-design double-blind superiority trial, with 5 groups (1:1:1:1:1 ratio) with different combinations of flurbiprofen and dezocine. Patients scheduled for lobectomy will be recruited. The primary outcome is total sufentanil use in patient-controlled intravenous analgesia within the first 24 postoperative hours. Secondary outcomes include pain numeric rating scales at 6th, 12th, 24th, 48th, and 72th postoperative hours, and on the 1st, 3rd, and 6th postoperative months at rest and during coughing, adverse effects from experimental drug treatment, sufentanil use at other time points, analgesia cost, time to chest tube removal, length of hospital stay, time to pass first flatus, and serum level of cytokines. Doctors, patients, and nurses are blinded, and only the manager is unblinded. Analysis is intention-to-treat. Statistical analysis is pre-specified. Statistical comparison of the treatment groups includes one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s post hoc test. Discussion Trial did not begin to recruit. Participant recruitment start date is planned to be June 1, 2020. Approximate recruitment end date is May 31, 2021. If successful, the trial may shed light on the use of certain analgesic combinations in post-lobectomy pain control. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR1800018563 . BackgroundUniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (UniVATS) was utilized with a rapid growth. The evidence is sparse, however, on whether to add external suction to water-seal drainage for chest drainage after UniVATS. This retrospective propensity score-matched study aimed to identify the necessity of adding external suction to chest drainage after UniVATS.MethodsPatients with lung cancer who underwent UniVATS were included from our prospectively maintained database. Patients were divided into two cohorts based on the addition of external suction to postoperative water-seal drainage or not. Propensity score-matched analysis was performed to identify the impact of suction on chest tube duration, incidence of persistent air leak, hospital stay, and hospitalization cost. Multivariable model with interaction terms was constructed to identify impact of covariables on effect of suction.ResultsThe two cohorts matched well on baseline characteristics (nonsuction: 173; suction: 96). Compared with nonsuction group, suction group showed longer median chest tube duration (3 vs. 2 days, p = 0.003), higher incidences of persistent air leak (9.4% vs. 1.2%, p = 0.003), persistent drainage (16.8% vs. 5.8%, p = 0.007), and reduced drainage volume within first 3 postoperative days (386.90 vs. 504.78 ml, p = 0.011). Resection extent was identified to mediate the relationship between suction and chest tube drainage.ConclusionsThese findings discouraged adding external suction to water-seal drainage after UniVATS regarding longer chest tube duration and more persistent air leak. Patients undergoing lobectomy would benefit more from water-seal drainage without external suction compared with those doing sublobectomy.

Conjunctive transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among bacteria driven by plasmids facilitated the evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance. Heavy metal exposure accelerated the plasmid-mediated conjunctive transfer of ARGs. Nanomaterials are well-known adsorbents for heavy metals removal, with the capability of combatting resistant bacteria/facilitating conjunctive transfer of ARGs. However, co-effect of heavy metals and nanomaterials on plasmid-mediated conjunctive transfer of ARGs was still unknown. In this study, we investigated the effect of the simultaneous exposure of Cd2+ and nano Fe2O3 on conjugative transfer of plasmid RP4 from Pseudomonas putida KT2442 to water microbial community. The permeability of bacterial cell membranes, antioxidant enzyme activities and conjugation gene expression were also investigated. The objective of modern pig breeding is to improve the genetic reproduction performance potential of sows, including the litter size and weight of piglets. During the gestation period, the umbilical cord facilitates placenta–fetal communication; thus, it plays an indispensable role in intrauterine embryonic development and fitness. Herein, we analyzed the molecular mechanism in declining reproductive potential in high-parity sows by assessing the changes in the umbilical cord blood. Firstly, we analyzed the reproductive characteristics data of sows, followed by histological analysis of the umbilical cord phenotype. Next, we evaluated the effect of umbilical cord blood exosomes (UCB-EXO) on angiogenesis. Finally, the miRNA expression in UCB-EXO from high-parity sows with poor reproductive performance (OS) and multiparous sows with excellent reproductive performance (MS) was assessed. Overall, the best reproductive performance was at parity 3–7, gradually decreasing after parity 8 and angiogenesis was repressed in OS. However, exosomes derived from MS (Exo-MS) exhibited pro-angiogenesis properties but were diminished in exosomes derived from OS (Exo-OS). Additionally, the angiogenesis of sows was significantly decreased, increasing the risk of disease with the increase in parity, greatly limiting the reproductive potential of the sows. At the same time, miR-188-5p expression in Exo-OS was significantly higher than in Exo-MS (p < 0.01), implying that it may play an important role in regulating the lifespan and reproductive potential of sows. These findings demonstrated that miRNAs in UCB-EXO play a central role in intrauterine development. Further, the findings suggest novel insights on reproductive potential, which provide a reference for increasing the sow reproductive efficiency.

Lung cancer is the most common and fatal tumor in the world with limited diagnostic and treatment methods. The development of precision medicine has brought new opportunities for the improvement of diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. However, various kinds of information required by precision medicine (such as biometrics, clinical test indicators and non-biological environmental background information) are difficult for clinicians to integrate and utilize effectively. With the development of computer technology, artificial neural networks (ANNs), which has the characteristic of high fault tolerance, intelligence and self-learning ability. Its powerful information integration ability can solve many problems in the development and application of precision medicine, which can play a key role in basic research and clinical practice associated with lung cancer. This article reviewed the application of artificial neural network in the field of lung cancer.

Background and Objective: Glucose fluctuation (GF) has been reported to induce renal injury and diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, the mechanism still remains ambiguous. Mitochondrial energy metabolism, especially aerobic glycolysis, has been a hotspot of DN research for decades. The activation of HIF-1α/miR210/ISCU/FeS axis has provided a new explanation for aerobic glycolysis. Our previous studies indicated quercetin as a potential therapeutic drug for DN. This study aims to evaluate levels of aerobic glycolysis and repressive effect of quercetin via HIF-1α/miR210/ISCU/FeS axis in a cell model of GF.Methods: The mouse glomerular mesangial cells (MCs) were exposed in high or oscillating glucose with or without quercetin treatment. Cell viability was measured by CCK8 assay. Aerobic glycolysis flux was evaluated by lactate acid, pH activity of PFK. Apoptosis level was confirmed by Annexin V-APC/7-AAD double staining and activity of caspase-3. TNF-α and IL-1β were used to evaluate inflammation levels.Results: GF deteriorated inflammation damage and apoptosis injury in MCs, while quercetin could alleviate this GF-triggered cytotoxicity. GF intensified aerobic glycolysis in MCs and quercetin could inhibit this intensification in a dose-dependent manner. Quercetin prevented activities of two FeS-dependent metabolic enzymes, aconitase, and complex I, under GF injury in MCs. The mRNA expression and protein contents of HIF-1α were increased after GF exposure, and these could be alleviated by quercetin treatment. Knockdown of ISCU by siRNA and Up-regulating of miR-210 by mimic could weaken the effects of quercetin that maintained protein levels of ISCU1/2, improved cell viability, relieved inflammation injury, decreased apoptosis, and reduced aerobic glycolysis switch in MCs.Conclusion: Quercetin antagonizes GF-induced renal injury by suppressing aerobic glycolysis via HIF-1α/miR-210/ISCU/FeS pathway in MCs cell model. Our findings contribute to a new insight into understanding the mechanism of GF-induced renal injury and protective effects of quercetin.

Background: Superior sulcus tumor is a rare non-small cell lung cancer with poor prognosis. Exploring the potential prognostic factors of patients with superior sulcus tumor and adopting individualized treatment for patients with different prognostic factors are of great significance for the prolongation of patients' lives. To figure out the prognostic factors of upper sulcus tumors, a meta-analysis was conducted.Method: We searched all the articles published until January 2020 in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases, and the search strategy included the following terms, combining superior sulcus tumor and prognosis. Hazard ratio (HR) with associated confidential interval (CI) was evaluated for the purpose of investigating prognostic factors for superior sulcus tumor. STATA 16.0 was used for analysis of extracted data and assessment of publication bias.Result: Fifteen eligible studies, which had 1,009 patients with superior sulcus tumor, were included in this meta-analysis. The studies were published between 1994 and 2018, and the patient recruitment periods ranged from 1974 to 2016. The median follow-up time ranged from 18 to 95 months. The meta-analysis indicated that lower T stage (HR, 1.63; 95% CI, 1.35–1.97), lower N stage (HR, 3.08; 95% CI: 2.37–3.99), negative surgical margin (HR, 0.25; 95% CI, 0.17–0.38), and pathologic complete response (HR, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.39–0.77) were favorable prognostic factors.Conclusion: We found that T stage, N stage, surgical margin, and pathologic complete response are prognostic factors for superior sulcus tumor. To reach a better long-term survival, patients with these negative prognostic factors may need a more aggressive treatment, while more studies should be conducted to further validate these results and explore a more effective treatment.

Background: Prognostic nutritional index (PNI), combining albumin and lymphocyte counts, which represent the nutritional and immune status, was considered as an effective predictor for the patient's prognosis after surgery. To comprehensively analyze the relative effectiveness of prognostic performance of pretreatment PNI in esophageal cancer (EC), we performed this meta-analysis.Methods: We performed a systematic search in PubMed, Embase, CNKI, and Web of Science. The hazard ratios (HRs) or odds ratios (ORs) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted to explore the correlation between PNI and the post-operative survival of patients with EC, including overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and post-operative complications. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) was applied to estimate the quality of the included studies. The Begg's test was applied to assess the publication bias.Results: A total of 13 articles with 3,543 patients, were included in our meta-analysis, and nine studies reported OS in 2,731 EC patients. The pooled results of the nine studies suggested that EC patients with a low PNI would have a worse overall survival (HR = 1.14, 95% CI 0.99–1.31, p < 0.05). The integrated results also indicated that the PNI was a negative predictor for RFS.Conclusion: This meta-analysis indicated a high correlation between PNI and post-operative survival of EC. EC patients with low PNI values tend to have worse OS and may be at a higher risk of EC recurrence. However, more relevant researches are needed to confirm the association between PNI and post-operative complications of EC.

The Liangshan pig is a traditional Chinese small-sized breed; it has a relatively long feeding period and low meat production ability but superior meat quality. This study utilized three non-linear growth models (Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and logistic) to fit the growth curve of Liangshan pigs from an unselected, random-bred pig population and estimate the pigs most suitable slaughter weight. The growth development data at 20 time points of 275 Liangshan pigs (from birth to 250 d) were collected. To analyze the relative gene expression related to development, seven slaughter weight phases (50, 58, 66, 74, 82, 90, and 98 kg) (20 pigs per phase) were examined. We found that the Liangshan pig growth curve fit the typical S-curve well and that their growth turning point was 193.4 days at a weight of 62.5 kg, according to the best fit Von Bertalanffy model based on the goodness of fit criteria. Furthermore, we estimated that the most suitable slaughter weight was 62.5 to 74.9 kg based on the growth curve and the relative expression levels of growth-related genes.

Background and objective It is unknown that the postoperation fast-track recovery and in hospital cost of the lobectomy in lung cancer, we explored the influencing factor of postoperative fast-track recovery and in hospital cost after undergoing lobectomy for lung cancer. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all patients (n=176) who underwent lobectomy for lung cancer between January 2010 and November 2011 by a thoracic surgeon. Results The hospital costs of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy (47,308.21 ¥) is significantly higher than open lobectomy (45,664.31 ¥)(P=0.007). The hospital costs of body mass index (BMI) ≥ 24 kg/m2 (51,186.99 ¥) is significantly higher than BMI < 24 kg/m2 (41,701.64 ¥)(P=0.032). Background and objective Primary lung cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors. The aim of the current study is to retrospectively analyze the clinical features variation of patients with primary bronchogenic carcinoma in West China Hospital Sichuan University to provide information for early detection and treatment of lung cancer. Animal growth curves can provide essential information for animal breeders to optimize feeding and management strategies. However, the genetic mechanism underlying the phenotypic differentiation between the inflection point and asymptotic stages of the growth curve is not well characterized. Here, we employed Liangshan pigs in stages of growth at the inflection point (under inflection point: UIP) and the two asymptotic stages (before the inflection point: BIP, after the inflection point: AIP) as models to survey global gene expression in the longissimus dorsi muscle using digital gene expression (DGE) tag profiling. We found Liangshan pigs reached maximum growth rate (UIP) at 163.6 days of age and a weight of 134.6 kg. The DGE libraries generated 117 million reads of 5.89 gigabases in length. 21,331, 20,996 and 20,139 expressed transcripts were identified BIP, UIP and AIP, respectively. Among them, we identified 757 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between BIP and UIP, and 271 DEGs between AIP and UIP. An enrichment analysis of DEGs proved the immune system was strengthened in the AIP stage. Energy metabolism rate, global transcriptional activity and bone development intensity were highest UIP. Meat from Liangshan pigs had the highest intramuscular fat content and most favorable fatty acid composition in the AIP. Three hundred eighty (27.70%) specific expression genes were highly enriched in QTL regions for growth and meat quality traits. This study completed a comprehensive analysis of diverse genetic mechanisms underlying the inflection point and asymptotic stages of growth. Our findings will serve as an important resource in the understanding of animal growth and development in indigenous pig breeds.

Background: Whether wedge resection is oncological suitable for ground glass opacity (GGO)-dominant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) ≤2 cmis still debatable. The aim of this study is to investigate the short-term and long-term outcomes of intentional wedge resection and segmentectomy for those patients. Materials and Methods: This was a real-world study from one of the largest thoracic surgery centers in West China. Patients who underwent intentional wedge resection or segmentectomy for ≤2 cmCTR (consolidation-to-tumor) =0.5 NSCLC were consecutively included between December 2009 and December 2018. Data were prospectively collected and retrospectively reviewed. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was used to balance baseline characteristics. Long-term outcomes, including overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and lung cancer-specific survival (LCSS), were analyzed using Cox proportional model. Results: A total of 1209 patients were included (497 in the wedge resection group, 712 in the segmentectomy group). Compared to segmentectomy, wedge resection had a significantly lower rate of complications (3.8 vs. 7.7%, P=0.008), a shorter operating time (65 min vs. 114 min, P<0.001), and a shorter postoperative stay (3 days vs. 4 days, P<0.001). The median follow-up was 70.1 months. Themultivariate Coxmodel indicated that wedge resection had survival outcomes that were similar to segmentectomy in terms of 5-year OS (98.8 vs. 99.6%, HR=1.98, 95% CI: 0.59-6.68, P=0.270), 5-year RFS (98.8 vs. 99.5%, HR=1.88, 95% CI: 0.56-6.31, P=0.307) and 5-year LCSS (99.9 vs. 99.6%, HR=1.76, 95% CI: 0.24-13.15, P=0.581). The South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), has invaded most Afro-Eurasian countries. Since its first detection in China in late 2017, this pest has been now present in nearly 20 provinces/prefectures in China and is threating tomato and other Solanaceous crops such as potato, eggplant, and tobacco. Here, we provide a timely review on the current distribution, damage, management, and research in China. A standard survey form was designed and 30 answered surveys from 25 provinces have been received. The data showed that the damage has been witnessed in most of the regions despite that the severities vary among the regions. The management is chemicalcontrol biased, and more efforts are needed to increase the adoption of non-chemical alternatives in the Integrated Pest Management packages. An Integrated Pest Management (IPM) package called "CAMEFA" was developed and demonstrated in Yunnan and Xinjiang, the two earliest regions for the invasion. Yet, the adoption by local growers is still limited. Besides T. absoluta, we suggest a multi-pest approach by combining IPM tactics coping with other major insect pests sharing the crop. Lastly, international projects are deemed to serve as key lever for promoting IPM of T. absoluta and other invasive insect pests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
