P/TGMS (Photo/thermo-sensitive genic male sterile) lines are crucial resources for two-line hybrid rice breeding. Previous studies revealed that slow development is a general mechanism for sterility-fertility conversion of P/TGMS in Arabidopsis. However, the difference in P/TGMS genes between rice and Arabidopsis suggests the presence of a distinct P/TGMS mechanism in rice. In this study, we isolated a novel P/TGMS line, ostms19, which shows sterility under high-temperature conditions and fertility under low-temperature conditions. OsTMS19 encodes a novel pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) protein essential for pollen formation, in which a point mutation GTA(Val) to GCA(Ala) leads to ostms19 P/TGMS phenotype. It is highly expressed in the tapetum and localized to mitochondria. Under high temperature or long-day photoperiod conditions, excessive ROS accumulation in ostms19 anthers during pollen mitosis disrupts gene expression and intine formation, causing male sterility. Conversely, under low temperature or short-day photoperiod conditions, ROS can be effectively scavenged in anthers, resulting in fertility restoration. This indicates that ROS homeostasis is critical for fertility conversion. This relationship between ROS homeostasis and fertility conversion has also been observed in other tested rice P/TGMS lines. Therefore, we propose that ROS homeostasis is a general mechanism for the sterility-fertility conversion of rice P/TGMS lines.

Abstract Intercropping is a prevalent soil management strategy within orchards, whereas it is unclear how inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and intercropping affect tree growth, soil properties, and rhizosphere metabolite profiles. This study investigated the effects of inoculation with Diversispora spurca and intercropping with hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) on biomass production, soil available nutrients, water-stable aggregate (WSA) distribution, phosphatase activity, and secondary metabolite profiles in walnuts (Juglans regia). The intercropping only elevated soil nitrate N levels and WSA distribution at the 0.5–2 mm size, and also triggered 2159 differential metabolites (1378 up-regulated and 781 down-regulated), with armillaramide as the most prominently up-regulated metabolite, followed by the substance diminished upon D. spurca inoculation. Conversely, D. spurca inoculation increased walnut biomass, WSA distribution across the 0.25 − 2 mm size, and acid and neutral phosphatase activities, as well as triggered 2489 differential metabolites (897 up-regulated and 1592 down-regulated), with pteroside D being highest up-regulated differential metabolite, allowing a competitive advantage to AM plants in combating soil pathogens. Despite significantly suppressing root AM fungal colonization and biomass production in AM walnuts, intercropping significantly increased soil ammonium and nitrate N levels in AM walnuts as well as WSAs at the 1–4 mm size, exhibiting a synergistic effect. Flavone and flavonol biosynthesis and pyruvate metabolism were simultaneously involved following AM inoculation or intercropping. Co-application of AM inoculation and intercropping triggered 1006 differential metabolites, with urocanic acid being the most up-regulated metabolite, although it decreased following AM inoculation, suggesting the involvement of mycorrhizal hyphae in soil histidine uptake. Under intercropping, AM inoculation elicited 418 differential metabolites, with the most up-regulated metabolite being implicated in flavonoid pathways. AM inoculation primarily triggered the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, regardless of intercropping or not, implying a potential increase in unsaturated fatty acid contents of walnut kernels. It concluded that AM inoculation and intercropping interactively affected walnut growth, soil attributes, and soil microenvironment. Graphical Abstract

Inert gas argon has important applications in the fields of daily life, industrial manufacture and nuclear environmental monitoring. The key to its application is to selectively and efficiently separate and purify Ar from complex gas components. However, the separation of O2 and Ar at normal temperature is full of challenge due to their similar molecular sizes and adsorption properties as well as their close boiling point. In industry, high purity Ar is mainly produced by low temperature rectification, which is mature technology, but the equipment is large, high-energy consumption and explosive. Adsorption separation is a common method of gas separation. Molecular sieves are the most widely used material due to their huge specific surface area, aboudant pore structure and excellent adsorption properties. The silica tetrahedron in molecular sieve is electrically neutral, while the aluminum tetrahedron is electronegative, which makes it necessary to use H+ or Na+ outside the molecular sieve skeleton to maintain electrical neutrality. In actual application, the interaction between adsorbent and adsorbent can be enhanced by ion-exchange modification of molecular sieve material, so as to effectively improve the O2/Ar separation capacity of molecular sieve. In this paper, the application of ion-exchange modified molecular sieve materials in the field of O2/Ar adsorption separation was systematically summarized and reviewed. The results show that the O2/Ar separation coefficients of molecular sieves modified by alkaline earth metal ions like Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ can reach about 2.0, while that of Ce3+-exchanged X-type molecular sieve is as high as 5.9, it is an ideal adsorption material for O2/Ar separation. However, the high separation coefficient is limited to the range of low partial pressure, and the O2/Ar separation coefficient under normal pressure is below 2.0. The Ag+-exchanged molecular sieves, namely silver-loaded molecular sieves, have excellent Ar adsorption selectivity. At present, the O2/Ar separation coefficients of silver-loaded molecular sieve materials at atmospheric pressure are around 2.0, but the preparation cost of silver-loaded molecular sieves is high, and it is more suitable for small-scale separation applications, it means that the efficient separation of O2 and Ar at normal temperature and pressure is still challenging. The development of novel ion-exchange modified molecular sieve materials with high adsorption capacity and high adsorption selectivity for the separation of O2 and Ar is still one of the focuses and trends of future research projects.

Abstract Skyrmions, a stable topological vectorial textures characteristic with skyrmionic number, hold promise for advanced applications in information storage and transmission. While the dynamic motion control of skyrmions has been realized with various techniques in magnetics and optics, the manipulation of acoustic skyrmion has not been done. Here, the propagation and control of acoustic skyrmion along a chain of metastructures are shown. In coupled acoustic resonators made with Archimedes spiral channel, the skyrmion hybridization is found giving rise to bonding and antibonding skyrmionic modes. Furthermore, it is experimentally observed that the skyrmionic mode of acoustic velocity field distribution can be robustly transferred covering a long distance and almost no distortion of the skyrmion textures in a chain of metastructures, even if a structure defect is introduced in the travel path. The proposed localized acoustic skyrmionic mode coupling and propagating is expected in future applications for manipulating acoustic information storage and transfer.

This paper, set against the backdrop of expanding urban rail networks and dynamic urban development, focuses on the distribution and evolution of commercial Points of Interests (POIs) within the central urban rail transit areas of Beijing. The study examines data from four different years—2008, 2013, 2017, and 2020—to observe the temporal evolution of commercial entities. It identifies stable explanatory variables affecting the distribution and evolution of commercial POIs, which include rail transit accessibility, characteristics of the working and residential population distribution around stations, and the construction intensity in the vicinity of station areas. Through statistical analysis and model building, relatively stable linear regression equations were established, with R2 values generally maintained above 0.5 (except for 2017). The study advances our understanding of the influence of rail transit on urban commercial spaces and how this influence shifts with temporal and urban developmental changes. It elucidates the correlation between changes in the number of businesses and spatial configuration, offering insights and information for urban planners and policy makers. This research also serves as a model for exploring the interplay between urban rail transit and commercial spaces in other major cities.

Abstract Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) trigger beneficial effects on their hosts, but it is unknown how plants modulate their defense responses during root colonization of AMF and the symbiotic benefits are initiated. The purpose of this study was to analyze the root mycorrhizal colonization process of trifoliate orange and the responsive patterns of plant growth, root peroxide hydrogen (H2O2), antioxidant enzymes and their encoding gene expression, and sugar, lipid and phosphate transporter protein gene expression at 7‒56 days of inoculation (doi) with Funneliformis mosseae (Fm). Fm developed appressoriums on the root surface at 7 doi, followed by abundant arbuscules in root cortical cells at 28 doi, intracellular vesicles at 42 doi, and root mycorrhizal colonization rate of 41.54% at 56 doi. Plant growth improvement by Fm started at 28 doi. The immune defense response of roots was initiated at 7 doi, as evidenced by the increase of H2O2 levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) activity, as well as the up-regulation of PtMn-SOD, PtCu/Zn-SOD, PtPOD, and PtCAT expression, which lasted until 14 doi. Starting at 28 doi, a sugar transporter gene (PtSWEET), a lipid transporter gene (PtSTR), and a phosphate transporter gene (PtPT6) were initiated to be up-regulated, followed by the up-regulation of PtSTR2, PtPT3, and PtPT5 at 42 doi and PtFe-SOD at 56 doi. Arbuscule formation and plant growth improvement together at 28 doi suggested that arbuscules trigger improved growth responses of host plants. This study also reveals the initiation of host immune defense response and function in early root AMF colonization. Graphical Abstract

Polygonum cuspidatum, an important medicinal plant, often experiences shading from surrounding vegetation during its growth phase, raising questions about the impact of such conditions on the functionality of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. This study investigated the effects of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (Funneliformis mosseae) on the growth, leaf gas exchange, and concentrations of active ingredient concentrations in leaves and roots of P. cuspidatum under shading (with a 72% shading rate) conditions. A nine-week shading intervention significantly suppressed root colonization by F. mosseae and the formation of soil mycorrhizal mycelium. Shading significantly inhibited the above-ground growth performance, biomass production, leaf photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and intercellular CO2 concentration, while F. mosseae significantly increased these variables in the absence of shading. Plant height, leaf biomass, stem biomass, leaf photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance were all decreased by F. mosseae when the plants were shaded. The shading treatment also significantly diminished the concentrations of active components measured in both leaves and roots. Under no-shading conditions, F. mosseae significantly boosted the concentrations of polydatin, resveratrol, aloe-emodin, emodin, chrysophanol, and physcion in roots, as well as the concentrations of polydatin and chrysophanol in leaves. Conversely, in the presence of shading, F. mosseae distinctly reduced these active ingredient levels in roots, followed by an increase in leaf polydatin and chrysophanol concentrations. In summary, shading substantially impaired the mycorrhizal benefits on plant growth, leaf gas exchange, and root active ingredients in P. cuspidatum, highlighting the importance of sufficient light to maximize mycorrhizal contributions.

Serendipita indica is a very promising root-associated endophytic fungus that is widely used on various plants; however, whether it affects the growth and physiological activity of an oilseed crop (Camellia oleifera) under field conditions remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed the effects of S. indica inoculation on root colonization rate, growth rate, photosynthetic parameters, mineral element concentrations and related gene expression, and sugar concentrations and expression of their transporter genes in four-year-old C. oleifera trees in the field. The results showed that the root colonization rate of C. oleifera increased from 3.37% to 9.42% following being inoculated with S. indica. Inoculation with S. indica significantly increased the plant height (46.81%), net photosynthetic rate (69.16%), nitrogen balance index (14.44%), chlorophyll index (21.08%), leaf K (7.4%), leaf Ca (13.52%), root P (17.75%), root K (12.80%), soil NH4+-N (17.78%), available K (26.66%), Olsen-P (184.30%), easily extractable glomalin-related soil protein (39.26%), and soil organic carbon (16.25%) concentrations compared to the uninoculated treatment. Inoculation with S. indica also significantly up-regulated the expression of CoHKT1;1 and CoCAX1;2 in the leaves and roots and CoPht1;1, CoPht1;2, and CoPht1;3 in the leaves. Plants inoculated with S. indica also presented significantly higher leaf glucose, fructose, and sucrose concentrations, accompanied by up-regulated expression of CoSWEET2a, CoSWEET7, CoSWEET9b, CoSWEET17a, and CoSWEET17b. These results suggest that S. indica has significant potential as a biostimulant for enhancing the growth and nutritional profile of C. oleifera, thereby contributing to sustainable oilseed production.

Abstract As a unique type of supramolecular self‐assemblies, crystalline host‐guest aggregates have attracted extensive interests in multiple application fields. Herein, a crystalline host‐guest aggregate LIFM‐HG1 was obtained with curcubit[8]uril as the host and carboxypyridinium salt as the guest. Single‐crystal structural analysis indicates that the presence of abundant weak interactions in LIFM‐HG1 provides a rigid environment for the guest molecule and effectively blocks the external quenchers. Spectral analysis and theoretical calculations confirm the presence of robust triplet energy levels in LIFM‐HG1. Even more impressively, the intersystem crossing channels of the guest molecules are greatly opened up after the formation of the crystalline host‐guest aggregate, resulting in a large kisc of 6.70 × 107 s−1 at room temperature for LIFM‐HG1 (which is ∼0 for pure guest), leading to fascinating multichannel (including one‐photon, two‐photon, and X‐ray) excited LPL properties. In addition, the crystalline LIFM‐HG1 has a much higher triplet state luminescence efficiency under X‐ray and two‐photon excitation than that under single‐photon excitation (AP/AF = 86.8, 44.8, 10.7 under the three circumstances, respectively). And the phosphorescent emission intensity of LIFM‐HG1 is 27.6 times higher than that of the crystalline guest under X‐ray excitation. As a result, LIFM‐HG1 shows a long afterglow retention time under both single‐ and two‐photon excitation, and an impressive afterglow retention time of 1 s under X‐ray excitation. Furthermore, the excellent lysosomal targeting and low cytotoxicity by the formation of host‐guest aggregate makes LIFM‐HG1 promising to be used as a novel lysosomal‐targeted two‐photon excited phosphorescent tracer.

Abstract Root-associated symbiotic fungi can enhance the host plant’s ability to tolerate adverse environmental conditions, but it’s unclear whether and how they enhance waterlogged peach plants. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Funneliformis mosseae (Fm), an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, and Serendipita indica (Si), an endophytic fungus, on plant growth, root development, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, total flavonoids, ROS scavenging activity of flavonoids, and activities and gene expression of antioxidant enzymes in roots of waterlogged peach seedlings. Although waterlogging treatment had little effect on root development, Fm and Si, particularly Fm, improved root development variables to varying degrees. Waterlogging significantly promoted superoxide anion radicals (O2 •−) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels, whereas Fm and Si distinctly reduced O2 •− and H2O2 levels under waterlogging. Waterlogging triggered an increase in total flavonoids in fungi-inoculated seedlings, and the two fungi also significantly increased total flavonoid concentrations and the scavenging activity of total flavonoids to hydroxyl radical, O2 •−, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical. In addition, root fungal colonization rate was negatively and significantly correlated with O2 •− and H2O2, but positively with total flavonoids. Under waterlogging conditions, Fm significantly raised root superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activities, and Si likewise elevated root SOD, CAT, GPX, and peroxidase (POD) activities, compared with uninoculated treatment. Although the expression of various antioxidant enzyme genes in roots remained mostly unchanged or were inhibited by the waterlogging, Fm up-regulated the expression of PpSOD3 and PpSOD7, whereas Si up-regulated the expression of PpSOD3, PpCAT1, PpGPX6, PpGPX8, and PpPOD1. In conclusion, low oxidative bursts in Fm- and Si-inoculated peach plants exposed to waterlogging were associated with an increase in total flavonoids as well as activities and gene expression of antioxidant enzymes. The mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) has been recently identified as a neurotrophic factor, but its role in hepatic fibrosis is unknown. Here, we found that MANF was upregulated in the fibrotic liver tissues of the patients with chronic liver diseases and of mice treated with CCl4. MANF deficiency in either hepatocytes or hepatic mono-macrophages, particularly in hepatic mono-macrophages, clearly exacerbated hepatic fibrosis. Myeloid-specific MANF knockout increased the population of hepatic Ly6Chigh macrophages and promoted HSCs activation. Furthermore, MANF-sufficient macrophages (from WT mice) transfusion ameliorated CCl4-induced hepatic fibrosis in myeloid cells-specific MANF knockout (MKO) mice. Mechanistically, MANF interacted with S100A8 to competitively block S100A8/A9 heterodimer formation and inhibited S100A8/A9-mediated TLR4–NF-κB signal activation. Pharmacologically, systemic administration of recombinant human MANF significantly alleviated CCl4-induced hepatic fibrosis in both WT and hepatocytes-specific MANF knockout (HKO) mice. This study reveals a mechanism by which MANF targets S100A8/A9-TLR4 as a “brake” on the upstream of NF-κB pathway, which exerts an impact on macrophage differentiation and shed light on hepatic fibrosis treatment.
