Arid ecosystems are known to be sensitive to climate change. The Jornada Basin in the USA, as one representative of arid land, has suffered from land degradation in recent decades. In order to disentangle the climate–vegetation feedback, we analyzed the vegetation dynamics under the effects of climate change via a mathematical model based on the reaction–diffusion mechanism. Using this model, we conducted a sensitive analysis of climate factors and concluded that the ecosystem might experience a catastrophic shift with the climatic deterioration. We considered the non-local interaction term to explain the competition among plants. Additionally, the PLR (power law range) metric was used to quantify the extent of the degradation and to compare the results of the vegetation patterns from the remote sensing data and the simulations. From the results, this model could simulate the trends of land degradation in this area. We found that the land degradation could be mainly attributed to climate changes in recent years. This approach suggests that vegetation patterns can provide hints as to whether the ecosystem is approaching desertification. In this study, the East Asian summer (June–July–August) monsoon (EASM) atmospheric moisture transport variability under global warming are examined using ERA‐Interim reanalysis data from 1979 to 2019. The total EASM atmospheric moisture transport is decomposed into the thermodynamic (δTH) and dynamic (δMCD) components, which are related to specific humidity and wind velocity, respectively. Based on empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, both the second and the fourth modes of δTH are linked to δMCD, indicating that δMCD can impact the moisture distribution and consequently influence δTH indirectly. Both the first (δTH_EOF1) and the third (δTH_EOF3) modes of δTH show considerable interdecadal changes. It is noted that their principal components exhibit significant increasing trends in recent decades. The response of EASM moisture transport to global warming is probably reflected in these two modes. δTH_EOF1 is associated with negative phases of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO)/Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). This causes the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) to extend westward and the strengthening of Pacific trade winds. As a result, positive precipitable water anomalies dominate East Asia and δTH_EOF1 is characterized by anomalous southwesterly moisture transport along the East China Sea to southern Japan. δTH_EOF3 corresponds to anomalous moisture transport over the Indochina Peninsula and Japan. The precipitable water associated with δTH_EOF3 in general represents a meridional dipole. Anomalous southward wind induced by the eastward extension of the WNPSH is the main reason for positive (negative) precipitable water anomalies in southern (northern) East Asian. The anomalous circulation associated with the anomalous east–west sea surface temperature gradient over the Indian Ocean affects atmospheric moisture in southern East Asian and can dramatically impact δTH_EOF3. In this study, the temporal variation of actual evapotranspiration (AE) over China during 1980–2015 is analysed based on an ensemble of six reanalyses and a complementary‐relationship‐based AE dataset. The results reveal that annual mean AE in China increases significantly, and the major regime shift occurred around 1998. Accordingly, long‐term mean AE changes from 1999–2015 relative to 1980–1997 are computed to quantify the spatial pattern of AE trends. In general, annual AE increases significantly in southern and northwestern China but decreases significantly in northeastern China and eastern Tibetan Plateau. Then we examine the primary cause for changes in AE using the Budyko framework, in which the change of climate is represented by changes in precipitation and potential evapotranspiration and the shift in landscape characteristics is represented by the parameter n. Overall, increasing potential evapotranspiration is the main contributor to the increase of AE in southeastern China. Increasing potential evapotranspiration and the parameter n are the main contributors to the increase of AE in southwestern China. Decreasing AE in northeastern China and eastern Tibetan Plateau are respectively caused by changes in precipitation and the parameter n, whereas the combination of these two factors has led to increasing AE in northwestern China. It is shown here that the contribution of the parameter n is comparable to that of climate change in western China. A positive correlation is found between vegetation coverage and the parameter n; however, vegetation type, catchment slope, irrigation practices, and glacial meltwater also have an impact on regional n. A concurrent occurrence of the negative contribution of parameter n and positive vegetation coverage change is found in the forest land of northeastern and southeastern China. Decreasing irrigation water is likely the main reason for the negative contribution of n in cropland of the North China Plain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Enhancing the ignition energy has little influence on ignition with the static condition. • The multi-strike is superior to the continuous discharge at the lean limit of static condition. • Enhancing the ignition energy improves the ignition performance with the turbulent condition. • The discharge duration is more critical on ignition than the discharge power under the strong flow field. • The continuous discharge is better than the multi-strike for ignition under the strong flow field. Diluted combustion can promote thermal efficiency and decrease NO x emissions for natural gas engines, but also presents high cycle-by-cycle variations. Enhancing the in-cylinder flow field is beneficial for the combustion stability, but brings challenges for the stable ignition. Therefore, advanced ignition strategies are critical for extending the diluted limit. In this work, by using the constant volume combustion vessel, rapid compression and expansion machine, and multi-cylinder natural gas engine, the lean methane/air or natural gas/air mixtures under the static and turbulent conditions are established to compare various discharge strategies. The comparisons include: (1) different discharge energies, (2) power and duration enhancements with similar discharge energies, (3) the continuous discharge and multi-strike. For the static condition, once the flame kernel can be successfully established, enhancing discharge power or duration has few effects on ignition. The continuous discharge and multi-strike show no clear differences. At the lean limit, the multi-strike shows better performance than the continuous discharge. For the turbulent condition, increasing discharge energy can promote the initial flame propagation. When the flow velocity around the spark plug increases to some extent, enhancing the discharge duration shows better performance than enhancing the discharge power. Moreover, the continuous discharge is better for the ignition processes than the multi-strike. For the multi-cylinder engine tests, compared to the single strike of one coil, the continuous discharge and multi-strike extend the lean limit from the excess air ratio of 1.51 to 1.61. The coupling of hetero monolayers into van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures has become an effective way to obtain tunable physical and chemical properties of two dimensional (2D) materials. In this work, based on first principles calculations, we systematically explore the electronic and magnetic properties of a 2D VOCl 2 /PtTe 2 heterostructure. Our results indicate that the ground state of the VOCl 2 /PtTe 2 heterostructure is a ferromagnetic (FM) metal with large magnetic anisotropy energy, among which, the VOCl 2 "sublayer" shows FM half metallic properties while the PtTe 2 "sublayer" shows nonmagnetic metallic properties. The Curie temperature ( T C ) of VOCl 2 /PtTe 2 is 111 K. Moreover, the FM-antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition can be obtained under biaxial strain.
