1. Solving Motion Planning Tasks with a Scalable Generative Model

Abstract

As autonomous driving systems being deployed to millions of vehicles, there is a pressing need of improving the system's scalability, safety and reducing the engineering cost. A realistic, scalable, and practical simulator of the driving world is highly desired. In this paper, we present an efficient solution based on generative models which learns the dynamics of the driving scenes. With this model, we can not only simulate the diverse futures of a given driving scenario but also generate a variety of driving scenarios conditioned on various prompts. Our innovative design allows the model to operate in both full-Autoregressive and partial-Autoregressive modes, significantly improving inference and training speed without sacrificing generative capability. This efficiency makes it ideal for being used as an online reactive environment for reinforcement learning, an evaluator for planning policies, and a high-fidelity simulator for testing. We evaluated our model against two real-world datasets: the Waymo motion dataset and the nuPlan dataset. On the simulation realism and scene generation benchmark, our model achieves the state-of-the-art performance. And in the planning benchmarks, our planner outperforms the prior arts. We conclude that the proposed generative model may serve as a foundation for a variety of motion planning tasks, including data generation, simulation, planning, and online training. Abstract

This paper presents our 2nd place solution for the NuPlan Challenge 2023. Autonomous driving in real-world scenarios is highly complex and uncertain. Achieving safe planning in the complex multimodal scenarios is a highly challenging task. Our approach, Imitation with Spatial-Temporal Heatmap, adopts the learning form of behavior cloning, innovatively predicts the future multimodal states with a heatmap representation, and uses trajectory refinement techniques to ensure final safety. The experiment shows that our method effectively balances the vehicle's progress and safety, generating safe and comfortable trajectories. In the NuPlan competition, we achieved the second highest overall score, while obtained the best scores in the ego progress and comfort metrics.

4. Gd-Based Solvated Shells for Defect Passivation of CsPbBr$_3$ Nanoplatelets Enabling Efficient Color-Saturated Blue Electroluminescence

Abstract

Reduced-dimensional CsPbBr$_3$ nanoplatelets (NPLs) are promising candidates for color-saturated blue emitters, yet their electroluminescence performance is hampered by non-radiative recombination, which is associated with bromine vacancies. Here, we show that a post-synthetic treatment of CsPbBr$_3$ NPLs with GdBr$_3$-dimethylformamide (DMF) can effectively eliminate defects while preserving the color. According to a combined experimental and theoretical study, Gd$^{3+}$ ions are less reactive with NPLs as a result of compact interaction between them and DMF, and this stable Gd$^{3+}$-DMF solvation structure makes Brions more available and allows them to move more freely. Consequently, defects are rapidly passivated and photoluminescence quantum yield increases dramatically (from 35 to ~100%), while the surface ligand density and emission color remain unchanged. The result is a remarkable electroluminescence efficiency of 2.4% (at 464 nm), one of the highest in pure blue perovskite NPL light-emitting diodes. It is noteworthy that the conductive NPL film shows a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 80%, demonstrating NPLs' significant electroluminescence potential with further device structure design.

8. A Tagging Solution to Discover IoT Devices in Apartments

Abstract

The number of IoT devices in smart homes is increasing. This broad adoption facilitates users' lives, but it also brings problems. One such issue is that some IoT devices may invade users' privacy. Some reasons for this invasion can stem from obscure data collection practices or hidden devices. Specific IoT devices can exist out of sight and still collect user data to send to third parties via the Internet. Owners can easily forget the location or even the existence of these devices, especially if the owner is a landlord who manages several properties. The landlord-owner scenario creates multi-user problems as designers build machines for single users. We developed tags that use wireless protocols, buzzers, and LED lighting to lead users to solve the issue of device discovery in shared spaces and accommodate multi-user scenarios. They are attached to IoT devices inside a unit during their installation to be later discovered by a tenant. These tags have similar functionalities as the popular Tile models or Airtag, but our tags have different features based on our privacy use case. Our tags do not require pairing; multiple users can interact with them through our Android application. Although researchers developed several other tools, such as thermal cameras or virtual reality (VR), for discovering devices in environments, they have not used wireless protocols as a solution. We measured specific performance metrics of our tags to analyze their feasibility for this problem. We also conducted a user study to measure the participants' comfort levels while finding objects with our tags attached. Our results indicate that wireless tags can be viable for device tracking in residential properties.

Abstract

In this report, we introduce our solution to the Occupancy and Flow Prediction challenge in the Waymo Open Dataset Challenges at CVPR 2022, which ranks 1st on the leaderboard. We have developed a novel hierarchical spatial-temporal network featured with spatial-temporal encoders, a multi-scale aggregator enriched with latent variables, and a recursive hierarchical 3D decoder. We use multiple losses including focal loss and modified flow trace loss to efficiently guide the training process. Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between serum retinol concentration and normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). METHODS: A total of 345 study subjects were recruited in a prospective cross-sectional study: 101 patients with NTG, 106 patients with high-pressure primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 138 healthy control subjects. Serum retinol concentration in fasting blood samples was determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). All study subjects were given complete ophthalmic examinations and diagnosed by two glaucoma sub-specialists. RESULTS: Serum retinol concentrations in NTG, POAG, and controls were 338.90 ± 103.23 ng/mL, 405.22 ± 114.12 ng/mL, and 408.84 ± 122.36 ng/mL respectively. 13. Attacks on Visualization-Based Malware Detection: Balancing Effectiveness and Executability

Abstract

With the rapid development of machine learning for image classification, researchers have found new applications of visualization techniques in malware detection. By converting binary code into images, researchers have shown satisfactory results in applying machine learning to extract features that are difficult to discover manually. Such visualization-based malware detection methods can capture malware patterns from many different malware families and improve malware detection speed. On the other hand, recent research has also shown adversarial attacks against such visualization-based malware detection. Attackers can generate adversarial examples by perturbing the malware binary in non-reachable regions, such as padding at the end of the binary. Alternatively, attackers can perturb the malware image embedding and then verify the executability of the malware post-transformation. One major limitation of the first attack scenario is that a simple pre-processing step can remove the perturbations before classification. For the second attack scenario, it is hard to maintain the original malware's executability and functionality. In this work, we provide literature review on existing malware visualization techniques and attacks against them. We summarize the limitation of the previous work, and design a new adversarial example attack against visualization-based malware detection that can evade pre-processing filtering and maintain the original malware functionality. We test our attack on a public malware dataset and achieve a 98% success rate.

14. A Survey on Common Threats in npm and PyPi Registries

Abstract

Software engineers regularly use JavaScript and Python for both front-end and back-end automation tasks. On top of JavaScript and Python, there are several frameworks to facilitate automation tasks further. Some of these frameworks are Node Manager Package (npm) and Python Package Index (PyPi), which are open source (OS) package libraries. The public registries npm and PyPi use to host packages allow any user with a verified email to publish code. The lack of a comprehensive scanning tool when publishing to the registry creates security concerns. Users can report malicious code on the registry; however, attackers can still cause damage until they remove their tool from the platform. Furthermore, several packages depend on each other, making them more vulnerable to a bad package in the dependency tree. The heavy code reuse creates security artifacts developers have to consider, such as the package reach. This project will illustrate a high-level overview of common risks associated with OS registries and the package dependency structure. There are several attack types, such as typosquatting and combosquatting, in the OS package registries. Outdated packages pose a security risk, and we will examine the extent of technical lag present in the npm environment. In this paper, our main contribution consists of a survey of common threats in OS registries. Afterward, we will offer countermeasures to mitigate the risks presented. These remedies will heavily focus on the applications of Machine Learning (ML) to detect suspicious activities. To the best of our knowledge, the ML-focused countermeasures are the first proposed possible solutions to the security problems listed. In addition, this project is the first survey of threats in npm and PyPi, although several studies focus on a subset of threats.

18. Formaldehyde sensing by Co3O4 hollow spheres at room temperature

Abstract

Formaldehyde is a ubiquitous and high toxicity gas. It is an essential task to efficient detect owing to their toxicity and diffusion. In this work, we studied on the detection of trace amount of formaldehyde based on hollow Co3O4 nanostructure. It is found that Co3O4 hollow spheres with different structures shows distinct sensing performance towards formaldehyde at room temperature, the response value of nanosheet modified Co3O4 towards 100 ppm formaldehyde will reach 35 in 18 second, and the nanoparticle modified Co3O4 hollow sphere will reach 2.1 in 18 second, 17 in 300 second. The nanosheet modified and nanoparticle modified Co3O4 hollow sphere will reach 4 and 20 in 10 second towards 100 ppm formaldehyde at room temperature. As room temperature, the sensors do not response towards NH3, CO, etc. The sensing mechanism was proposed based on the theoretical and experimental results. 23. LARS1 is a Prognostic Biomarker and Exhibits a Correlation with Immune Infiltrates in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Abstract

Purpose: To study the relationship between LARS1 expression and immune infiltration and prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients and Methods: The clinical characteristics together with LARS1 expression levels were obtained from the TCGA database. Immunohistochemistry confirmed LARS1 expression levels in paraneoplastic and tumor tissues. To investigate LARS1-related downstream molecules, a network of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and the Gene Ontology (GO)/Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) were built. Furthermore, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was used to analyze the pathways associated with LARS1 expression, whereas Single-sample GSEA (ssGSEA) was applied to perform an association study between immune infiltration and LARS1 gene expression. The TISCH Database and the TISIDB database were used to compare the difference of LARS1 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma and immunomodulators. Results: In comparison to that in normal tissues, the LARS1 expression level was elevated in tumor tissues. LARS1 expression exhibited substantial correlation with AFP, Histologic grade, pathologic stage, Residual tumor, and Vascular invasion in HCC. Higher LARS1 expression in HCC was linked to lower progression-free survival (PFS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and overall survival (OS). According to the GO/KEGG study, the important biological process (neutral lipid metabolic process), cellular component (triglyceride-rich plasma lipoprotein), molecular functions (lipase inhibitor activity), and KEGG pathway (cholesterol metabolism) could be a probable function mechanism in promoting HCC. Various pathways as per GSEA revealed that they were enriched in samples with elevated LARS1 expression. The expression level of LARS1 in malignant tumor cells after immunotherapy was significantly higher than that before immunotherapy. LARS1 was also remarkably linked to the infiltration level and the immunomodulators. Conclusion: LARS1 can be used as a biomarker of HCC, which is associated to immune infiltration of HCC. This study was designed to investigate the expression of TIGIT in PBC patients, with an aim to analyze its diagnostic value in PBC.Patients and Methods: We first explore the expression of TIGIT in cancer patients based on TCGA database, and then we analyzed its correlation with clinicopathological features. Afterwards, we compared the protein and mRNA expressions of TIGIT in two BC cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and normal breast epithelial cell line (MCF-10A). Subsequently, 56 PBC female patients admitted to the Taizhou People’s Hospital from October 2018 to June 2021 were included in this study. Flow cytometry was used to detect TIGIT level on peripheral blood CD3+ T cells of PBC patients and healthy controls. TIGIT expression in PBC tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence staining.Results: TCGA database showed that compared with adjacent tissues, TIGIT was significantly upregulated in tumor tissues. High TIGIT expression was positively correlated with tumor stage and negatively correlated with recurrence free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). TIGIT level in BC cell lines, peripheral blood and tumor tissues of PBC patients was significantly higher than that of control (P < 0.05). TIGIT level was correlated with age (P < 0.05), rather than tumor size, pathological type, lymph node metastasis, ER, PR, HER-2, and P53. ROC curve showed that the optimal critical value of peripheral blood TIGIT for BC screening was 23.38%. Postoperative TIGIT level in peripheral blood was significantly decreased compared to the preoperative TIGIT level (P < 0.05).Conclusion: TIGIT was upregulated in PBC and was correlated with age. 40. Theoretical Model and Experiments of Focused Phased Array for Cross-Medium Communication in Misaligned Transmitter/Receiver Scenarios

Abstract

Direct communication across the water-air interface has attracted wide attention because of its potential applications in integrated air-sea networking. In this article, three different cross-medium communication systems have been proposed, including line-of-sight (LOS) optical links, laser-induced acoustic (LIA) systems, and translational acoustic radio frequency (TARF) systems. However, LOS optical links are sensitive to turbid water, misalignment of the transmitters/receivers, and the influence of surface waves. LIA systems are unstable with poor repeatability. TARF systems require the alignment of transmitters/receivers. Moreover, in situations where the location of detection points is required to be frequently moved for flexible communication, LOS optical links, and TARF systems both failed. This article proposes a cross-medium focused phased array (CMFPA) model, which is a multiple-input single-output system, to enlarge the detection area and increase the overall wave amplitude at the water surface. Theoretical analyses and experimental results indicate that the CMFPA can relax the requirement of precise alignment between communication nodes and improve performance in cross-medium communication when compared to a single-input single-output system. The study is expected to provide a foundation for cross-medium communication between underwater and airborne nodes in misaligned transmitters/receivers scenarios.

Abstract

Lithium-ion diffusion ability in solid electrolytes is crucial for the performance and safety of lithium-ion batteries. However, the lithium-ion diffusion coefficient of Li6.75La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 (LLZTO) measured experimentally is much lower than that simulated theoretically because LLZTO exists widely in the polycrystalline form rather than in the single-crystal form. Herein, we focus on the construction of grain boundaries in polycrystalline materials to address this key issue. An amorphous structure is created by randomly throwing atoms into a virtual box, where the chemical bonds are broken and rearranged through continuous heating and annealing operations, resulting in a stable framework structure. The lithium-ion diffusion coefficients of polycrystalline LLZTO and single-crystal LLZTO calculated via Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) are consistent with the experimental data in trend. Furthermore, the analysis of the grain boundary composed of the secondary phase in polycrystalline LLZTO reveals that the continuous –O–M–O– metal oxide grid with low formation energy per atom restricts the lithium-ion migration. The lithium-ion migration barriers calculated utilizing density functional theory (DFT) also demonstrate the obstacle of the grain boundary from another perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report a symbiotic hetero-nanocomposite that stabilizes unprecedented CaCl2-type TiO2 for enhanced solar-driven hydrogen evolution reaction., Symbiotic hetero-nanocomposites prevail in many classes of minerals, functional substances and/or devices. However, design and development of a symbiotic hetero-nanocomposite that contains unachievable phases remain a significant challenge owing to the tedious formation conditions and the need for precise control over atomic nucleation in synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report a solution chemistry approach for a symbiotic hetero-nanocomposite that contains an unprecedented CaCl2-type titania phase inter-grown with rutile TiO2. CaCl2 structured TiO2, usually occurring when bulk rutile-TiO2 is compressed at an extreme pressure of several GPa, is identified to be a distorted structure with a tilt of adjacent ribbons of the c-axis of rutile. The structural specificity of the symbiotic CaCl2/rutile TiO2 hetero-nanocomposite was confirmed by Rietveld refinement, HRTEM, EXAFS, and Raman spectra, and the formation region (TiCl4 concentration vs. reaction temperature) was obtained by mapping the phase diagram. Due to the symbiotic relationship, this CaCl2-type TiO2 maintained a high stability via tight connection by edge dislocations with rutile TiO2, thus forming a CaCl2/rutile TiO2 heterojunction with a higher reduction capacity and enhanced charge separation efficiency. These merits endow symbiotic CaCl2/rutile TiO2 with a water splitting activity far superior to that of the commercial benchmark photocatalyst, P25 under simulated sunlight without the assistance of a cocatalyst. Our findings reported here may offer several useful understandings of the mechanical intergrowth process in functional symbiotic hetero-nanocomposites for super interfacial charge separation, where interfacial dislocation appears to be a universal cause.
