To investigate the clinical effect of NRD assisted Ilizarov technique in the treatment of infected bone and soft tissue defect of tibia.All 48 patients with infected bone and soft tissue defect of tibia were randomly divided into study group and control group from March 2013 to December 2020. There were 34 males and 14 females, aged from 24 to 55 years old with an average of (40.54±11.64) years old. There were 25 patients in the study group, including 17 males and 8 females, aged from 31 to 55 years old with an average of (41.36±9.69) years old. The study group were treated with NRD assisted with Ilizarov bone transport technique. There were 23 patients in control group, including 17 males and 6 females, aged from 24 to 53 years old with an average of(38.61±8.76) years old. The control group were treated with traditional bone transport technique. The curative rate, recurrence rate, incidence rate of pin track infection, time of using antibiotics, time of wound healing, time of carrying external fixation, time of bone transport, time of bone healing and postoperative function were used to evaluate the therapeutic effect of the two groups.The follow-up period was from 12 to 62 months with an average of (33.0±7.2) months. At the final follow-up, there was no significant difference in the curative rate between the two groups (NRD assisted Ilizarov technique can achieve satisfactory results in the treatment of infected bone and soft tissue defect of tibia and shorten the treatment period and the time of using antibiotics. It is worthy of development in clinic.

Light, as the energy and signal sources for plant growth and development, is one of the most important environment factors in recently developed plant factories with artificial light (PFALs). To find the optimal combination of light wavelengths for lettuce (Lactuca sativa cv. ‘Tiberius’) plant growth in a PFAL, four treatments, each using red (R; 662 nm) and blue light (B; 447 nm) with a ratio of 4:1 and photon flux density (PFD) of 150 μmol·m−2·s−1, and mixing, respectively, with 50 μmol·m−2·s−1 of green light (G; 525 nm; RBG), yellow light (Y; 592 nm; RBY), orange light (O; 605 nm; RBO) and far-red light (FR; 742 nm; RBFR), were set up during this experiment. A combination of R and B with a ratio of 4:1 and PFD of 200 μmol·m−2·s−1 was set as the control (RB). The responses of lettuce growth, morphology, anatomical structure of the lettuce leaf, photosynthetic performance, lettuce nutritional quality, and energy use efficiency were investigated. The results showed that RBG, RBO, and RBFR increased the shoot fresh weight of lettuce by 20.5%, 19.6%, and 40.4%, and they increased the shoot dry weight of lettuce by 24.2%, 13.4%, and 45.2%, respectively, compared with those under RB. The Pn under RBY was significantly lower than that under RB, although no significant differences in chlorophyll or carotenoid content were found between RBY and RB. RBG increased the lettuce leaf area, the thickness of the leaf palisade tissue, Pn, and light use efficiency compared with those under RB. Plants grown under RBO showed better photosynthetic capacity, such as higher Pn, ΦPSII, and other photosynthetic parameters. RBFR caused an increase in lettuce leaf area and energy use efficiency, but a decrease in leaf thickness and Pn of the single leaf. Moreover, tipburn injury was observed under RBFR. Therefore, these results demonstrate that RBG and RBO can be considered optimal combinations of light wavelengths for lettuce growth in a PFAL in this experiment, although plant growth can also be improved by using RBFR.

The effect of external roof shading on the spatial distribution of air temperature and relative humidity in a greenhouse (Tin and RHin) was evaluated under the arid climatic conditions of Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia. Two identical, evaporatively-cooled, single-span greenhouses were used in the experiment. One greenhouse was externally shaded (Gs) using a movable black plastic net (30% transmissivity), and the other greenhouse was kept without shading (Gc). Strawberry plants were cultivated in both greenhouses. The results showed that the spatial distribution of the Tin and RHin was significantly affected by the outside solar radiation and evaporative cooling operation. The regression analysis showed that when the outside solar radiation intensity increased from 200 to 800 W m–2, the Tin increased by 4.5°C in the Gc and 2°C in the Gs, while the RHin decreased by 15% in the Gc and 5% in the Gs, respectively. Compared with those in the Gc, more uniformity in the spatial distribution of the Tin and RHin was observed in the Gs. The difference between the maximum and minimum Tin of 6.4°C and the RHin of 10% was lower in the Gs than those in the Gc during the early morning. Around 2°C difference in the Tin was shown between the area closed to the exhausted fans and the area closed to the cooling pad with the external shading. In an evaporatively-cooled greenhouse in arid regions, the variation of the Tin and RHin in the vertical direction and along the sidewalls was much higher than that in the horizontal direction. The average variation of the Tin and RHin in the vertical direction was 5.2°C and 10% in the Gc and 5.5°C and 13% in the Gs, respectively. The external shading improved the spatial distribution of the Tin and RHin and improved the cooling efficiency of the evaporative cooling system by 12%, since the transmitted solar radiation and accumulated thermal energy in the greenhouse were significantly reduced.

Although optimal control has been used extensively for greenhouse climate management, its application to plant factories is still in its infancy. In this paper, profitability of growing lettuce in a Chinese plant factory is investigated by means of optimal control computations. To that end, first, a lettuce growth model is adapted to fit a plant factory environment. Next, this model is calibrated and validated using nine sets of experimental data with different LED light intensities. Using the calibrated and validated model, optimal control computations are used to produce a 3D plot revealing the influence of the electricity and lettuce price on maximum profit. Lettuce's physiological demand for dark periods during artificial lighting is incorporated by fixing this dark period to eight hours a day. Therefore, the optimal LED light intensity pattern obtained from the optimal control computations could be used in the actual production process. Maximum profit can reach 264.88 RMB m−2 assuming a Chinese plant factory fresh lettuce price of 34.5 RMB kg−1. When lettuce must be sold at 5.01 RMB kg−1, which represents the price for an open field product, profit always comes out negative. Besides, LED lighting is not advised when the electricity price is greater than 0.84 RMB kWh−1 under these circumstances. Profit is only positive when the lettuce price is over 20 RMB kg−1.

Excessive accumulation of nitrates in vegetables is a common issue that poses a potential threat to human health. The absorption, translocation, and assimilation of nitrates in vegetables are tightly regulated by the interaction of internal cues (expression of related genes and enzyme activities) and external environmental factors. In addition to global food security, food nutritional quality is recognized as being of strategic importance by most governments and other agencies. Therefore, the identification and development of sustainable, innovative, and inexpensive approaches for increasing vegetable production and concomitantly reducing nitrate concentration are extremely important. Under controlled environmental conditions, optimal fertilizer/nutrient element management and environmental regulation play vital roles in producing vegetables with low nitrate content. In this review, we present some of the recent findings concerning the effects of environmental factors (e.g., light, temperature, and CO2) and fertilizer/nutrient solution management strategies on nitrate reduction in vegetables grown under controlled environments and discuss the possible molecular mechanisms. We also highlight several perspectives for future research to optimize the yield and nutrition quality of leafy vegetables grown in controlled environments.

The aim of this research was to identify the clinicopathological characteristics of early gastric cancer (EGC) based on the WHO criteria, and to analyze predictors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in EGC in a Chinese study population.We retrospectively collected data of 304 Chinese EGC patients, including 265 patients undergoing radical gastrectomy and 39 patients undergoing endoscopic resection. Histological features were accessed by three experienced pathologists. Univariate analysis and multivariate analysis were used to identify the correlation between clinicopathological features and LNM.Among the 304 cases with EGC, the rate of well differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma was 11.2%, significantly lower than that of Japanese and South Korean, which was 24.8% and 19.9% respectively (p0.001 and p = 0.006), but similar to that of a Western result, which was 11.9% (p = 0.860). Among the 265 patients who underwent gastrectomy, 18.5% of the patients had LNM. Univariate analysis showed that macroscopic type, differentiation degree, invasion depth, infiltration pattern (INF), lymphovascular invasion and ulceration were related to LNM. Multivariate analysis revealed that lymphovascular invasion (p 0.001, OR = 6.549), ulceration (p = 0.035, OR = 2.527) and INF c (p = 0.042, OR = 3.424) were the independent risk factors of LNM in EGC.The pathological diagnosis standard of well differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma in China significantly differs from that in Japan and South Korea, but is similar to western countries. LNM is more likely to occur in EGCs with lymphovascular invasion, ulceration and INF c.

In this study, effects of alternating red light (R) and blue light (B) provided by LEDs on the growth and nutritional properties of ‘Green Oak leaf’ lettuce were examined. Four alternating light treatments (R/B) had the same 8.64 μmol m−2 daily light integral (DLI) and similar R:B ratio (2:1), but different R/B alternating intervals that were respectively 8 h, 4 h, 2 h, and 1 h during a 16 h photoperiod. Two simultaneous light treatments, one of which (RB) had the same DLI and energy consumption with the alternating light treatments, while the other (RB’) had the same photoperiod with the alternating light treatments were set up to compare the concurrently and alternately provided R and B. Results showed that different types of radiation led to obvious morphological changes, plants with simultaneous RB appeared the most sparse while those with RB’ looked the most compact. Plant height/width and leaf length/width were all the highest under R/B (8 h) followed by R/B (1 h). Lettuce biomass under RB’ was significantly higher than others, more than twice that under RB, R/B (4 h) and R/B (2 h), but less than twice that under R/B (8 h) and R/B (1 h). RB’ significantly decreased the soluble sugar content by 9%–32% while increased crude fiber content by 14%–39% compared with others. Significantly higher ascorbic acid content as well as lower nitrate content were detected in lettuce under R/B (4 h) and R/B (2 h), while significantly lower ascorbic acid content as well as higher nitrate content were detected in lettuce under R/B (8 h) and R/B (1 h). In all, based on the same energy consumption, R/B (8 h) and R/B (1 h) resulted in higher yield, while R/B (4 h) and R/B (2 h) brought about higher nutritive value compared with the cocurrent light RB. Therefore, we conclude that lettuce growth and qualities can be purposely adjusted by adopting different alternating intervals of red and blue light. Meanwhile, the alternating modes will provide methods for deeply studying the relationship of red and blue light when acting on plants.

The classification of the distinct group of mesenchymal neoplasms, first described as 'Xp11 translocation perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa)' and for which the term 'melanotic Xp11 neoplasm' or 'Xp11 neoplasm with melanocytic differentiation' has recently been proposed, remains challenging and controversial. We collected 27 melanotic Xp11 neoplasms, the largest series to date, for a comprehensive evaluation. Fourteen of the cases, together with eight alveolar soft part sarcomas (ASPS), nine conventional PEComas and a control group of seven normal tissues were submitted to RNA sequencing. Follow-up available in 22 patients showed 5-year overall survival and 5-year disease-free survival of 47.6 and 35.7%, respectively, which were similar to ASPS and significantly worse than conventional PEComa. Univariate analysis of location (occurring in the kidney versus not kidney), infiltrative growth pattern, nuclear pleomorphism, mitotic activity ≥2/50 high-power fields (HPF), necrosis and lymphovascular invasion were found to be associated with overall survival and/or disease-free survival. Multivariate analysis identified that location was the only factor found to independently correlate with disease-free survival. More importantly, RNA sequencing-based clustering analysis segregated melanotic Xp11 neoplasm and ASPS from other tumors, including conventional PEComa and Xp11 translocation renal cell carcinoma, and formed a compact cluster representative of the largely similar expression signature. Here we clearly define the true biologic nature of melanotic Xp11 neoplasms which are distinctive malignant mesenchymal tumors, rather than simply PEComa variants with occasionally unpredictable behavior. Meanwhile, melanotic Xp11 neoplasm and ASPS more likely represent phenotypic variants of the same entity, which is distinct from conventional PEComa and Xp11 translocation renal cell carcinoma. Based on these important findings, melanotic Xp11 neoplasm might be reclassified into a distinctive entity together with ASPS, independent from PEComa, in future revisions of the current WHO categories of tumors of soft tissue and bone for the improved reclassification. © 2020 Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. The present study evaluated the growth response and sugar accumulation of lettuce exposed to different lighting modes of red and blue LED light based on the same daily light integral (7.49 μmol·m−2). Six lighting treatments were performed, that were monochromatic red light (R), monochromatic blue light (B), simultaneous red and blue light as the control (RB, R:B = 1:1), mixed modes of R, B and RB (R/RB/B, 4 h R to 4 h RB and then 4 h B), and alternating red and blue light with alternating intervals of 4 h and 1 h respectively recorded as R/B(4 h) and R/B(1 h). The Results showed that different irradiation modes led to obvious morphological changes in lettuce. Among all the treatments, the highest fresh and dry weight of lettuce shoot were both detected with R/B(1 h), significantly higher than the other treatments. Compared with plants treated with RB, the contents of fructose, glucose, crude fiber as well as the total sweetness index (TSI) of lettuce were significantly enhanced by R treatment; meanwhile, monochromatic R significantly promoted the activities of sucrose degrading enzymes such as acid invertase (AI) and neutral invertase (NI), while obviously reduced the activity of sucrose synthesizing enzyme (SPS). Additionally. The highest contents of sucrose and starch accompanied with the strongest activity of SPS were detected in plants treated with R/B(1 h). The alternating treatments R/B(4 h) and R/B(1 h) inhibited the activity of SS, while enhanced that of SPS compared with the other treatments, indicating that different light environment might influence sugar compositions via regulating the activities of sucrose metabolism enzymes. On the whole, R/B(1 h) was the optimal lighting strategy in terms of lettuce yield, taste and energy use efficiency in the present study.

In order to explore the mechanism of response of growth and development of tomato seedlings to the combination of red and blue light, the light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) as precision modulation light sources were used in this study with 7 treatments including red (R) light, blue (B) light and combination of R+B light (9R1B, 6R1B, 3R1B, 1R1B, 1R3B), white (W) light as control, and the effects of different proportions of R and B light on the growth, photosynthetic pigment content, photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence and root activity of tomato seedlings with variety of 'SV0313TG' as experiment material were studied. The results showed that there were significant differences in growth of tomato seedlings under treatments of different proportions of R and B light. The aim of the present study was to explore a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 17 (ADAM17) mRNA and protein expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and its association with clinicopathological factors and prognosis. Through semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, the ADAM17 mRNA expression in 50 cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and corresponding normal esophageal mucosa were detected. Using streptavidin peroxidase conjugated immunohistochemistry, ADAM17 protein levels were detected in 80 cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and corresponding normal esophageal mucosa. A log rank test and the Cox proportional hazards model were used for the esophageal cancer survival analysis. ADAM17 mRNA expression levels in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and corresponding normal esophageal mucosa were 0.937±0.241 and 0.225±0.077, respectively (P0.05). In this study, the effects of light-emitting diode (LED) panels with different illumination schedules and mounted above butterhead lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. capitata) seedlings on lettuce growth and photosynthesis were examined, and the performance of the vertical and horizontal movable system on energy savings was evaluated. The illumination schedules used were fixed LED [F-LED (four LED panels illuminated the area below)] and movable LED [M-LED (two LED panels moved left and right once per day to illuminate the same area as F-LED)] at distances of 10 and 30 cm above the seedlings. The plant yields were uniform in all LED treatments. The highest light utilization efficiencies and lowest electricity consumption were found for the treatments with irradiation from a shorter distance above the seedlings. The true leaf numbers and ascorbic acid concentrations were the highest in the M-LED and F-LED treatments at a distance above the seedlings of 10 cm, while the leaf lengths and sucrose concentrations in these groups were significantly lower than those in the 30-cm treatment. These results indicate that illumination with M-LED can halve the initial light source input while maintaining yield and that sustained illumination from a shorter distance above the seedlings is the main factor in electricity savings.

An electric window control system based on low-speed CAN bus has been developed to reduce the wiring harness of vehicle control system, improve the system reliability and cut overall costs. On the basis of requirement analysis of the control system, a CAN application layer communication protocol has been defined. The electric window control system has been designed using Freescale 16-bit single chip microprocessor MCS12DP256 as central processing unit, and the control software has also been developed, in which an integral algorithm was used to realize the anti-pinch function.

Phytochemicals in vegetables are important for human health, and their biosynthesis, metabolism and accumulation are affected by environmental factors. Light condition (light quality, light intensity and photoperiod) is one of the most important environmental variables in regulating vegetable growth, development and phytochemical accumulation, particularly for vegetables produced in controlled environments. With the development of light-emitting diode (LED) technology, the regulation of light environments has become increasingly feasible for the provision of ideal light quality, intensity and photoperiod for protected facilities. In this review, the effects of light quality regulation on phytochemical accumulation in vegetables produced in controlled environments are identified, highlighting the research progress and advantages of LED technology as a light environment regulation tool for modifying phytochemical accumulation in vegetables.

To simplify the wiring harness of automotive body control system, the functional requirements of automotive door locks, window lifters, rearview mirrors, trunk lock, and lights were analyzed, and an architecture of automotive body electronic control system was put forward based on CAN bus technology. The application layer protocol referring SAE J1939 protocol specification was defined. And the door lock system was modeled and simulated as an example by using CANoe. The simulation results show that the proposed architecture of automotive body electronic control system works well, and the reliability of automotive body control system can be improved and the automotive weight and cost can be reduced.

Purple lettuce was grown hydroponically under six different nitrogen nutrition conditions, with NO(3-)-N:NH(4+)-N at 1:0, 4:1 and 1:1 combined with nitrogen application levels of 10 and 15 mmol · L(-1), for 25 days in solar greenhouse, then treated with short-term continuous lighting (SCL) before harvest to study the changes in contents of nutrients and analyze the effects of nitrogen nutrition conditions on the changes. Results showed that the shoot dry mass of all six nitrogen nutrition conditions were significantly improved under SCL treatment, by 35.1% at least, and the root dry mass increased greatly except for NO(3-)-N:NH(4+)-N 1:1 combined with nitrogen application level 15 mmol · L(-1) treatment and NO(3-)-N:NH(4+)-N 1:0 combined with nitrogen application level 10 mmol · L(-1) treatment. The relative contents of total phenols and flavonoid of different nitrogen nutrition conditions turned significantly different after treatment with SCL. The relative contents of total phenols and flavonoid were enhanced with the improvement of ammonium nitrogen ratio, while the relative content of anthocyanin increased and then decreased with the improvement of ammonium nitrogen ratio. The lighting treatment reduced the nitrate content of leaf blade of all six nitrogen nutrition conditions remarkably by 23.2% at least. The contents of ascorbic acid, soluble sugar and soluble protein rose significantly under SCL treatments. The study showed that the reduction of nitrate content speeded up with the enhancement of nitrogen application level and ammonium nitrogen ratio, and the advancement of ascorbic acid content slowed down with the increasing nitrogen application level. The soluble sugar improvement speed increased with the increasing ammonium nitrogen ratio, and SCL lifted the dry mass of the lettuce greatly. The results showed that SCL with LED lamps improved significantly the dry matter of lettuce under different nitrogen nutrition conditions, reduced the nitrate content and increased the ascorbic acid, soluble sugar and soluble protein contents greatly. In addition, nitrogen nutrition conditions affected the effectiveness of short-term continuous lighting on quality improvement rate of hydroponic lettuce remarkably.

A glasshouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of five days’ treatment before harvest with various light intensities and seven hydroponic solutions on nitrate reduction in lettuce. The results showed that SPAD of new and expanded leaves were elevated by most of the hydroponic solutions under shading compared with the full nutrient solution, while no effect was demonstrated under non-shading. Additionally, lettuces under non-shading presented slightly higher leaf SPAD than those under shading. Nitrate concentrations of lettuce new leaves, expanded leaves and petiole were lowered significantly by all hydroponic solutions under shading and non-shading conditions compared with the full nutrient solution. To evaluate the blood flow changes and their relationships to microvessel density (MVD) and thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) by transvaginal colour Doppler sonography (TV-CDS) in the ovarian interstitium to predict ovarian interstitial microvascular injury in the pathological process of ovarian endometrial cysts (OEC). Vegetables, the indispensable staple produce providing humans with many beneficial substances, are readily contaminated by nitrate, heavy metals and pesticides during conventional cultivation. In particular, off-season vegetables grown in protected systems with low light intensity do tend to accumulate more nitrate in tissues due to excess N fertilization driven by farmers' desire for high yields. Over-the-limit accumulation of the harmful substances in vegetables constitutes a serious hazard to human health globally. Soilless cultivation, currently a fraction of vegetable cultivation in China, is a promising cultivation method to decrease the accumulation of harmful substances through nutrient solution regulation and environmental factor control. However, conventional inorganic nutrient solutions present few quality benefits besides plant nutrition for the widely acknowledged formulations. Currently, high-quality vegetables are urgently desired by humans globally, but they are difficult to grow for lack of an effective and practical cultivation method to lower the accumulation of harmful substances and to improve nutritional quality simultaneously. Although some attempts have been made, few commercial formulations have been applied in practice. Biogas manure (biogas slurry and biogas dregs) is a by-product of biogas production. It has been shown to be a good fertilizer with abundant nutrients, amino acids and bioactive substances. In China, as a product of the recycling process of agricultural wastes, biogas manure is an ever-growing resource due to the rapid development of biogas projects. Therefore, the need to utilize biogas manure is an urgent issue that relates both to environment protection and nutrient resources utilization. In this paper, the updated research results on yield and the quality effects of vegetables cultivated with biogas dregs and the solutions modified from biogas slurry in China are summarized, highlighting the feasibility and benefits of biogas manure in high-quality vegetable production. It is concluded that biogas manure is an effective nutrient source for high-quality vegetable production based on its synergistic effects and effectiveness in yield and quality improvement (particularly depression effects on nitrate accumulation), and stress resistance. However, deliberate component regulations need to be developed for better yield and quality of vegetables under soilless cultivation due to the large variability of components of biogas manure caused by various combinations of fermentative materials.

In this paper, studies on photoautotrophic micropropagation (PM) and inoculant cultivation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) were reviewed. The existing issues, which include the lack of a bio-method for improving the environmental stress resistance of plantlets in vitro or ex vitro and the mass production of AMF inoculants in commercialization for PM and inoculants cultivation, were discussed. Based on current knowledge and our analysis, we suggested that the integration of PM system and mycorrhization in vitro (here called mycorrhization-PM cultivation system) is highly feasible. Furthermore, combining mycorrhization with PM system in vitro was shown to be an efficient method for alleviating the injuries of plantlets in vitro and ex vitro caused by environmental stresses and for mass producing AMF inoculants through applying different cultivation strategies. Cultivation strategies for the mass production of mycorrhizal plants and AMF inoculants using mycorrhization-PM cultivation system were discussed.

To investigate the expression of A disintegrin and metalloproteinase 17 (ADAM17) mRNA and ADAM17 protein in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and to evaluate their correlation with clinicopathological features and prognosis.The expression of ADAM17 mRNA in 50 ESCC and 50 normal esophageal tissues was detected by RT-PCR. The expression of ADAM17 protein in 80 ESCC and 80 normal esophageal tissues was detected with immunohistochemioal staining (SP). Log rank test and Cox proportional hazards analysis were used to analyze the prognosis of ESCC.The expression of ADAM17 mRNA in 50 ESCC and 50 normal esophageal tissues was 0.937 ± 0.241 and 0.225 ± 0.077, respectively. The positive expression rates of ADAM17 protein in 80 ESCC and 80 normal esophageal tissues was 66.2% and 6.2%, respectively. The expressions of ADAM17 mRNA and ADAM17 protein in the ESCC were significantly higher than those in normal esophageal tissues (P0.01). The expressions of ADAM17 mRNA and protein were positively correlated with lymph node metastasis and TNM staging (P0.05). There were no correlations between the expressions of ADAM17 mRNA and protein and sex, age and histological grade (P0.05) . The expression of ADAM17 protein was positively correlated with EGFR protein (P0.01). The lymph node metastasis, TNM staging and the expression of ADAM17 and EGFR protein were independent prognostic factors.ADAM17 mRNA and protein are highly expressed in ESCC than in normal esophageal tissues and may play an important role in the development, invasion and metastasis of ESCC. They may be used as prognostic factors of ESCC.

Phytochemicals in vegetables are important for human health, and their biosynthesis, metabolism and accumulation are affected by environmental factors. Light condition (light quality, light intensity and photoperiod) is one of the most important environmental variables in regulating vegetable growth, development and phytochemical accumulation, particularly for vegetables produced in controlled environments. With the development of light-emitting diode (LED) technology, the regulation of light environments has become increasingly feasible for the provision of ideal light quality, intensity and photoperiod for protected facilities. In this review, the effects of light quality regulation on phytochemical accumulation in vegetables produced in controlled environments are identified, highlighting the research progress and advantages of LED technology as a light environment regulation tool for modifying phytochemical accumulation in vegetables.

To investigate the effects of carvedilol on stabilizing atherosclerosis plaque.Forty five male Japanese white rabbits were divided randomly into 5 groups with 9 for each. One group was fed up with normal diet as blank control. In other four groups, the common carotid artery of rabbits fed up with high cholesterol diet were injured by balloon. Three groups of them were transfected by wild-type p53 gene 8 weeks later, and then two groups of them were treated with carvedilol (3 mgxkg(-1)xd(-1)) and metoprolol (6 mgxkg(-1)xd(-1)) respectively, high cholesterol diet should be continued for other 4 weeks. Serum lipid, hypersensitive C-reaction protein (hsCRP), oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) were measured in 0, 8, 12 weeks after experiment. The apoptosis rate of smooth muscle cell (SMC) in endomembrane and the local expression of p53, bcl-2, bax, alpha-actin were examined after experiment, and the carotid arteries were examined by light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.The typical carotid atherosclerotic plaques were observed in balloon-injured groups. The local expression rates of p53 in groups transfected by wild type p53 gene were higher obviously than them in other two groups (P0.01). Compared with the rabbits received simple transfection, the thickness of the fibrous cap in rabbits received carvedilol and metoprolol were all increased, but the change could be observed significantly in carvedilol group (P0.05). Compared with metoprolol, carvedilol could reduce the level of serum hsCRP, oxLDL, MDA, and increase the concentration of SOD and GSH-PX significantly (P0.05 or 0.01), but two medicines had no obvious influence to serum lipid. The apoptosis rate of SMC in endomembrane, the local expression of bax gene and bax/bcl-2 ratio were decreased, the positive expression rates of alpha-actin and bcl-2 were enhanced in carvedilol group (P0.01).Both carvedilol and metoprolol can improve the stability of the plaque, but carvedilol is superior. Its mechanisms may lie in that carvedilol still has function of anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, decreasing the apoptosis rate of SMC in addition to its function of blocking beta-receptor.

To explore a simplified and reproducible approach for the diagnosis and morphologic prognostication of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).Eighty-five cases of gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors including 74 cases of GIST, 8 esophageal smooth muscle tumor, 1 rectal leiomyosarcoma, 1 Schwannoma, and 1 malignant fibrous histiocytoma were studied by histological evaluation along with an immunohistochemistry panel including vimentin, CD117 (c-kit), CD34, SMA, desmin and S-100. Clinicopathological correlation was performed in 31 cases of GIST that had accompanied with the available follow-up data.Among 74 GISTs, 34 arose principally from the stomach, 30 from the small intestine, and 10 other cases found in the esophagus, retroperitoneum, mesenterium and omentum. The patients' age ranged from 23 to 80 years (mean 52.5 years), with 45 males and 29 females. Histologically, the tumors composed of either spindle or oval to round cells arranged in interlacing fascicles forming whorls or cellular clusters, cytoplasm generally abundant and eosinophilic. There were 48 cases of spindle cell type, 10 cases of epithelioid cell type and 16 cases of mixed cell type. All 74 cases of GIST were positive for CD117 in a cell membranous pattern, however, some variable staining patterns of CD117 had been noticed in a few cases. In addition, 54 GISTs were also positive for CD34 (72.9%), 25 cases positive for SMA, 5 cases positive for S-100 and 5 cases positive for desmin. According to the Fletcher's scheme, GISTs in this study were divided into 4 subcategories including groups of very low risk of aggressive behavior (3 cases), of low risk (15 cases), of intermediate risk (36 cases) and of high risk (20 cases) respectively. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis of 31 GIST cases whom had been followed up for 16 to 72 months showed a statistically significant difference present among the subcategories (P0.01).GISTs predominantly occur in the middle and old age patients, more common in male, and positive CD117 staining is considered to be the defining marker to differentiate GIST from other mesenchymal tumors of the GI tract. Positive CD34 immun-staining, plus a CD117 positivity, strengthens further a diagnosis of GIST. Subclassification of GISTs using Fletcher's scheme appears to be simple, reproducible, and correlates well with the clinical behavior of the tumor.
