Abstract

This book provides a general overview of virtual power plants (VPP) as a key technology in future energy communities and active distribution and transmission networks for managing distributed energy resources, providing local and global services, and facilitating market participation of small-scale managing distributed energy resources and prosumers. The book also aims at describing some practical solutions, business models, and novel architectures for the implementation of VPPs in the real world. Each chapter of the book begins with the fundamental structure of the problem required for a rudimentary understanding of the methods described. It provides a clear picture for practical implementation of VPP through novel technologies such as blockchain, digital twin, and distributed ledger technology. The book will help the electrical and power engineers, undergraduate, graduate students, research scholars, and utility engineers to understand the emerging solutions regarding the VPP concept lucidly.

Abstract

As the demand for electricity and the need for power systems flexibility grow, it is crucial to exploit more reliable and clean sources of energy to produce electricity when needed most. Tidal lagoons generate renewable electricity by creating an artificial head difference between water levels on the seaside, driven by tides, and water levels inside the basin, controlled by flow through the structure. Depending on the level of seawater, power generation from a tidal lagoon can be controlled, i.e. shifting power generation in time. This paper aims to investigate the operation of a tidal lagoon in response to fluctuating electricity prices. By developing an optimal operation model of a tidal lagoon, its schedule in the day-ahead wholesale electricity market was optimized to achieve maximum revenue. The Swansea Bay tidal lagoon was used as a case study. It was demonstrated that by exploiting the flexibility offered by the tidal lagoon, it can achieve a higher revenue in the day-ahead market, although their total electricity generation is reduced.

Abstract

Governments' net zero emission target aims at increasing the share of renewable energy sources as well as influencing the behaviours of consumers to support the cost-effective balancing of energy supply and demand. These will be achieved by the advanced information and control infrastructures of smart grids which allow the interoperability among various stakeholders. Under this circumstance, increasing number of consumers produce, store, and consume energy, giving them a new role of prosumers. The integration of prosumers and accommodation of incurred bidirectional flows of energy and information rely on two key factors: flexible structures of energy markets and intelligent operations of power systems. The blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) are innovative technologies to fulfil these two factors, by which the blockchain provides decentralised trading platforms for energy markets and the AI supports the optimal operational control of power systems. This paper attempts to address how to incorporate the blockchain and AI in the smart grids for facilitating prosumers to participate in energy markets. To achieve this objective, first, this paper reviews how policy designs price carbon emissions caused by the fossil-fuel based generation so as to facilitate the integration of prosumers with renewable energy sources. Second, the potential structures of energy markets with the support of the blockchain technologies are discussed. Abstract

Electric power systems are currently undergoing a transformation towards a decentralized paradigm by actively involving prosumers, through the utilization of distributed multi‐energy sources. This research introduces a fully decentralized multi‐community peer‐to‐peer electricity trading mechanism, which integrates iterative auction and pricing methods within local electricity markets. The mechanism classifies peers in all communities on an hourly basis depending on their electricity surplus or deficit, facilitating electricity exchange between sellers and buyers. Moreover, communities engage in energy exchange not only within and between themselves but also with the grid. The proposed mechanism adopts a fully decentralized approach known as the alternating direction method of multipliers. The key advantage of this approach is that it eliminates the need for a supervisory node or the disclosure of private information of the involved parties. Furthermore, this study incorporates the flexibility provided by residential heating systems and energy storage systems into the energy scheduling of some prosumers. Case studies illustrate that the proposed multi‐community peer‐to‐peer electricity trading mechanism effectively enhances local energy balance. Specifically, the proposed mechanism reduces average daily electricity costs for individual prosumers by 63% compared to scenarios where peer‐to‐peer electricity trading is not employed. 30. Modelling of an integrated gas and electricity network with significant wind capacity

Abstract

The large scale integration of wind generation capacity into an electricity network poses technical as well as economic challenges. In this research, three major challenges introduced by wind including non-correlated power output from geographically dispersed wind farms, wind variability and wind uncertainty were studied. In order to address each of the aforementioned challenges an appropriate modelling approach and case studies were used. The impacts of power output from dispersed wind farms on the Great Britain transmission reinforcement were studied using an optimal DC load flow combined with a power generation model. It was shown that Western and Eastern HVDC links play a crucial role to bypass the Scotland to England transmission bottleneck. The impacts of wind variability on the GB gas and electricity network were investigated through application of the Combined gas and Electricity Network (CGEN) Model. Additional gas storage capacity was shown to be an efficient option to compensate for wind variability. Two-stage and multi-stage stochastic programming models were developed to examine the impact of wind forecast uncertainty on the GB electricity and gas networks. Stochastic modelling approaches were shown to be efficient methods for scheduling and operating the system under wind uncertainty. The key contributions of this thesis are the investigation of the impacts of wind generation variability on the gas network, and development of twostage and multi-stage stochastic programming models of integrated gas and electricity network.
