The purpose of this article is to describe the impact of the research program entitled "Adherence to healthy eating recommendations: identification of measures, determinants and interventions". Beyond the main results described in this article, this program had a major impact on the training of graduate students. It was also a unique opportunity to develop and validate measurement tools relevant to nutrition research, and to make them available to the scientific community. The present study analyzes the representation of the anomaly in Oscar de profundis by Catherine Mavrikakis. This inexplicable event is paradoxically ever-present and completely absent in end of world literature. In particular, we will examine the role of ruins in the portrayal of the post-catastrophe scenario. This paper argues that the anomaly invites the reader to investigate further. However, they will only find ruins which are a constant reminder of what was lost and not an explanation of how these memories were erased from the collective conscience. The concept of depicting the anomaly through ruins will allow us to better understand how end of world literature may propose a critique of contemporary society.

The primary objective of this study was to examine how social desirability is associated with self-reported measures of dietary intakes and variables related to attitudes and behaviours towards eating. This analysis was conducted in 1083 adults (50.0% women) from the PREDISE study. Social desirability was assessed using the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding (BIDR) questionnaire, which includes two subscales: (1) self-deceptive enhancement (SDE), i.e., having an overly positive self-image and (2) impression management (IM), i.e., intentional response distortion to please. BIDR total score and IM subscore were positively associated with the Canadian Healthy Eating Index (C-HEI) (ß = 0.24 and ß = 0.50; p ≤ 0.0003), calculated using data from three self-administered 24 h food recalls. All BIDR scores were positively associated with self-determined motivation for eating regulation (0.03 ≤ ß ≤ 0.06; p < 0.0001), measured by the Regulation of Eating Behavior Scale, and with the intuitive eating score (0.02 ≤ ß ≤ 0.05; p < 0.0001). Also, all BIDR scores were negatively associated with hunger and disinhibition scores measured by the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (−0.17 ≤ ß ≤ −0.09; p < 0.0001). All these associations were adjusted for age, sex, BMI, and the education level. Furthermore, controlling for both dimensions of social desirability did not impact the magnitude of the association between self-determined motivation (the strongest predictor of healthy eating in the PREDISE study) and C-HEI. According to our results, associations are observed with diet quality, as well as with attitudes and behaviours towards eating; therefore, a measurement of social desirability responding would be pertinent in studies using those or related variables. We evaluated the contribution of place of birth to ethnocultural inequality in pregnancy outcomes. We analyzed a cohort of 1,487,723 births between 1998 and 2019 among minority Anglophones and majority Francophones in Quebec, Canada. We estimated the association (adjusted risk ratio, RR; 95% confidence interval, CI) of language with preterm birth and stillbirth, and incorporated interaction terms to determine the contribution of place of birth and distance traveled. Compared with Francophones, minority Anglophones had a greater risk of preterm birth (RR 1.03; 95% CI 1.01–1.06) and were less likely to deliver farther from home (RR 0.95; 95% CI 0.94–0.95). Anglophones who delivered close to home had a higher risk of preterm birth (RR 1.07; 95% CI 1.04–1.11), whereas Anglophones who delivered farther had a lower risk (RR 0.69; 95% CI 0.64–0.75). Patterns were similar for stillbirth. Ethnocultural inequality in adverse birth outcomes may be influenced by place of birth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The aims of this study were to elicit preferences about the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) vaccine campaign in the general French‐speaking adult Quebec population and to highlight the characteristics of the vaccine campaign that were of major importance. Methods: A discrete‐choice experiment (DCE) was conducted between April and June 2021, in Quebec, Canada. A quota sampling method by age, gender and educational level was used to achieve a representative sample of the French‐speaking adult population. The choice‐based exercise was described by seven attributes within a vaccine campaign scenario. A mixed logit (MXL) model and a latent class logit (LCL) model were used to derive utility values. Age, gender, educational level, income and fear of COVID‐19 were included as independent variables in the LCL. Results: A total of 1883 respondents were included for analysis, yielding 22,586 choices. From these choices, 3425 (15.16%) were refusals. In addition, 1159 (61.55%) individuals always accepted any of the vaccination campaigns, while 92 individuals (4.89%) always refused vaccine alternatives. According to the MXL, relative weight importance of attributes was effectiveness (32.50%), risk of side effects (24.76%), level of scientific evidence (22.51%), number of shots (15.73%), priority population (3.60%), type of vaccine (0.61%), and vaccination location (0.28%). Four classes were derived from the LCL model and attributes were more or less important according to them. Class 1 (19.8%) was more concerned about the effectiveness (27.99%), safety (24.22%) and the number of shots (21.82%), class 2 (55.3%) wanted a highly effective vaccine (40.16%) and class 3 (17.6%) gave high value to the scientific evidence (42.00%). Class 4 preferences (7.4%) were more balanced, with each attribute having a relative weight ranging from 1.84% (type of vaccine) to 21.32% (risk of side effects). Membership posterior probabilities to latent classes were found to be predicted by individual factors such as gender, annual income or fear of COVID‐19. Conclusions: Vaccination acceptance relies on multiple factors. This study allowed assessment of vaccination‐specific issues through a choice‐based exercise and description of factors influencing this choice by segmenting the sample and drawing profiles of individuals. Moreover, besides effectiveness and safety, a major point of this study was to show the importance given by the general population to the level of scientific evidence surrounding vaccines. Purpose: Main concept (MC) analysis is a well-documented method of discourse analysis in adults with and without brain injury. This study aims to develop a MC checklist that is culturally and linguistically adapted for Canadian French speakers and examine its reliability. We also documented microstructural properties and provide a normative reference in persons not brain injured (PNBIs). Method: Discourse samples from 43 PNBIs were collected. All participants completed the Cinderella story retell task twice. Manual transcription was performed for all samples. The 34 MCs for the Cinderella story retell task were adapted into Canadian French and used to score all transcripts. In addition, microstructural variables were extracted using Computerized Language Analysis (CLAN). Intraclass correlation coefficients were computed to assess interrater reliability for MC codes and microstructural variables. Test-retest reliability was assessed using intraclass correlations, Spearman's rho correlations, and the Wilcoxon signed-ranks test. Bland-Altman plots were used to examine the agreement of the discourse measures between the two sessions. Results: The MC checklist for the Cinderella story retell task adapted for Canadian French speakers is provided. Good-to-excellent interrater reliability was obtained for most MC codes; however, reliability ranged from poor to excellent for the "inaccurate and incomplete" code. Microstructural variables demonstrated excellent interrater reliability. Test-retest reliability ranged from poor to excellent for all variables, with the majority falling between moderate and excellent. Bland-Altman plots illustrated the limits of agreement between test and retest. Conclusions: This study provides the MC checklist for clinicians and researchers working with Canadian French speakers when assessing discourse with the Cinderella story retell task. This article examines Quebecers' attitudes towards welfare recipients and looks at the variation in the level of monthly assistance that Quebecers are willing to give them as a function of the recipient profile. Specifically, the article aims to study the influence of the ability to work as a merit-based heuristic structuring Quebecers' opinions. Our results indicate that Quebecers believe that social assistance recipients should receive monthly supports below what they consider to be the minimum income necessary to cover basic needs. Quebecers' views on the appropriate level of assistance to be provided to people benefiting from social assistance are also strongly structured by the issue of employability and the perception that individuals are in control of their situation. Finally, the ability to work is clearly distinguished from a variety of other individual characteristics that may influence Quebecers' opinions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To quantify food/beverage advertising on television in Montreal (Quebec), to estimate and characterise children's exposure and to examine trends over time.Design: Television food advertising data were licensed for nineteen food categories and eighteen stations for May 2011, 2016 and 2019. The frequency of advertisements and the average number viewed per child aged 2-11 years overall, by food category and by station type (i.e. youth-appealing (n 3) and generalist (n 15) stations) were determined. The percent change in advertising frequency and exposure between May 2011 and 2019 was calculated.Setting: Montreal, Quebec, Canada.Participants: This study used media data and did not directly involve human participants.Results: The total number of television advertisements increased by 11 % between May 2011 (n 41 084) and May 2019 (n 45 406); however, exposure to food/beverage advertisements decreased by 53 %, going from 226 ads/child in May 2011 to 107 ads/child in May 2019. Overall, the most advertised food categories in both May 2011 and 2019 were fast food (29·8 % and 39·2 %, respectively) followed by chocolate (14·2 %) in 2011 and savory snacks (9·7 %) in 2019. In May 2019, children were predominantly exposed to unhealthy food categories such as fast food (41·3 % of exposure), savory snacks (7·5 %), chocolate (5·0 %) and regular soft drinks (4·5 %), and most (89·3 %) of their total exposure occurred on generalist television stations.Conclusion: Despite Quebec's restrictions on commercial advertising directed to children under 13 years, Quebecois children are still frequently exposed to unhealthy food advertising on television. This thematic issue stems from a session organized in Quebec in 2018 for the joint meeting of the International Geographical Union (IGU) and the Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) Annual Congress in Quebec City. Hence counter-mapping practices are definitely a powerful means for Indigenous peoples to reclaim spatial capital. They demonstrate that digital online mapping effectively empowers Indigenous peoples: first, because they allow better control of the way their knowledge and territorialities are represented; and second, because digital and online mapping better convey storytelling, a privileged way of building knowledge among Indigenous peoples, for example by linking place-names with audio or video and hence limiting the decontextualization of oral knowledge. The article discusses the rivalry between the National Hockey League (NHL) hockey teams the Montréal Canadiens and the Québec City Nordiques. Details are provided about the portrayal of the two teams in Québec's French media and about the desire of the Nordiques to channel Québécois nationalism. The relationship between print media and nationalism is explored. The author examines the history of French print media in Québec and specifically investigates the sports coverage of French newspapers "La Presse" and "Le Soleil."

It is common in discourse surrounding Québécois and Puerto Rican nationalism to discuss both regions in terms of their linguistic marginality to Anglo-majorities found in Canada and the USA, respectively. As two areas faced with the common American task of inventing a national identity in displaced settings in the New World, English becomes an easy "other" against which the French Quebecker and Spanish Puerto Rican may define themselves. However, language becomes a problematic means of definition when considered in relation to its intrinsically Old World origins. This paper reexamines Quebec and Puerto Rican nationalism from a larger New World perspective that focuses on the role of American landscapes and settings in conjunction with the traditional linguistic approach. Canada's Moroccan Jewish community is the third largest diaspora in the world after Israel and France. This article introduces Sephardi Voices, a project to collect, preserve and archive audio-visually the life stories of Jews displaced from Arab/Islamic lands and in the process sketches an overview of the resettlement of one Sephardi migration community, the Moroccan to Montreal. Featuring scholars like Joseph Levy, Yolande Cohen and Jean-Claude Lasry, the integration experience of Moroccan Jews into the anglophone Ashkenazi community and the francophone Québécois society is presented, along with their efforts to build a French-Sephardi institutional structure to preserve their heritage. The article highlights the role of oral history and the aesthetics of remembrance as important vehicles to depict how memories are imparted and identities formed. Today, the Moroccan Jews of Montreal are transnationals and proud to add Canadian to their identity chain of Jewish, Sephardi, Moroccan and French. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines ongoing efforts to associate the decline of the modernist electroacoustic music tradition with the rise of digital technologies. Illustrative material is drawn from ethnographic and archival fieldwork conducted in 2011 and 2012 in the Canadian city of Montreal. The author surveys examples of institutions, careers, performances and works showing how the digital is brought into the ideological service of existing musical orders and power structures by musicians, policy-makers and other intermediaries. Drawing upon the social theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Georgina Born, as well as on contemporary media theory, the author argues that accounts of the disruptive agency of digital mediation are incomplete without a corresponding attention to the complex cultural mechanisms by which it is kept under control. What is at stake in the transformation of Montreal's electroacoustic tradition is not a collapse so much as a further remediation of modernist social and aesthetic principles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the role of culture and place in recovery from severe mental illness amongst a group of Québécois living in Montreal, Canada. Results indicate that dominant cultural characteristics of Québécois, such as a marked Roman Catholic heritage, use of the French language and a close affiliation with the natural territory of Québec can all play important roles in recovery from severe mental illness. The findings suggest that participants weave together places with cultural, familial and personal meaning to create their own healing landscapes. This article explores the statements Deleuze made about Kerouac's works, not to discount the use of Deleuzian concepts to analyze them, but to clarify the paradox underlying Deleuze's reading of Kerouac and how this paradox exemplifies Kerouac's reception in France and Quebec. While critics increasingly follow Deleuze in using Kerouac's œuvre to exemplify the process of escaping a dominant state, they overlook the ways in which Deleuze holds Kerouac up as symbolizing reterritorialization; and while Quebecois readers have recognized Kerouac as one of their own, their appropriation seeks to overcome his diasporic condition. While both the French and the Quebecois critical traditions reflect key aspects of Kerouac's life and works, neither speak to Kerouac's condition as a Franco-American author "split in the cradle." Abstract: Across four studies, we applied the cognitive model of anxiety to explicate the appraisals that elicit collective angst (i.e., concern for the in‐group's future vitality). In Study 1a, consistent with the model, Québécois experienced collective angst when they appraised the following: (1) a threat as likely to harm their group, (2) a threat as severely harming their group, and (3) Québécois as not having efficacy to protect their group. In Study 1b, results were replicated in the context of the realistic threat that Islamic extremists pose to Christian‐Lebanese. In Studies 2a and 2b, we manipulated the three appraisals and found a similar pattern of results in the context of a potential terrorist attack on American soil by Islamic extremists. Importantly, collective angst mediated the threat appraisal effect on (non‐Muslim) Americans' prejudice towards Muslims. This research explores two interconnected questions: (1) How do we approach stylistic features of multimodal rhetorical artifacts such as protest posters? (2) Do said artifacts designed for different purposes exhibit systematic stylistic differences? Drawing on Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic categorization, this study develops a framework for examining concision, one of the primary stylistic considerations for multimodal rhetorical artifacts such as protest posters. This paper illustrates the use of this framework by exploring the correlation between rhetorical purpose and concision in posters created and disseminated before and during the 2011-2012 Québécois student movement. This study fine-tunes our existing knowledge on multimodality with style sensitivity, and demonstrates how an economy-of-sign based semiotic approach could enrich the empirical examination of multimodal rhetorical artifacts by generating more controlled interpretations. A literary criticism of the books "The Girl Who Was Saturday Night" by Heather O'Neill and "My October" by Claire Holden Rothman is presented. It examines the anglophone desire for rapprochement in Quebec, sovereigntist ideology and the theme of cultural gaps being bridged by translation. Other topics include the books' focus on Quebec society, historical antagonism between anglophones and francophones, and a shift towards a social diversity paradigm.

The travelling and appropriation of queer theory by francophone feminists in Quebec have been particularly long and arduous, prompting an inquiry into not only the reasons for this delay, but also into the elements that ultimately allowed for an integration of queer theory among francophone feminists. Combining tools from social movement literature on diffusion (brokerage, frames, repertoire of contention, etc.) and a political theory approach, this article divides the integration of queer theory among francophone feminists into two moments. In the first instance, activists and academic feminists have generally received queer theory with considerable criticism, which we have regrouped into 3 axes: 1) the deconstruction of women and lesbians as political subjects; 2) the investment in the symbolic aspects of politics, to the detriment of material relations and structures of power, and 3) the erasure of lesbian specificity and the absence of male privilege examination. In the second moment, the work of the Pink Panthers–a radical queer group–allows for frame bridging and the use of a recognisable repertoire of collective action to address two out of the three axes of criticism. This article suggests that the process of brokerage creates a crack in the wall of resistance that will quickly become a space for the insertion and integration, even if still conflictual, of queer theory into francophone feminism. The main objective of this inquiry is to examine issues of belonging to Quebec and Canada among Quebecois Muslim youth, taking into account their educational and religious backgrounds and their motivations to identify with and participate in their societies as full citizens. The crucial questions I am asking are: (1) how do young Muslims understand and define their identity as Canadian Muslims; and (2) how do they negotiate their Muslimness alongside their Quebecness and/or their Canadianness. Based on interviews with Muslim youth in Montreal, I argue that these youth, while proud of their Muslimness, see their Canadianness as a precondition to their Quebecness. In other words, they believe that they cannot be Quebecois without being Canadian. Further, young Quebecois Muslims appreciate their national identity; they, alongside other francophone Quebecois from all walks of life who defend Quebec's Canadian character, are drawing Quebec closer to Canada and are contributing to it accepting its Canadian nature by the force of the democratic process. This article explores the career of Serge Gagnon. It highlights the impact of his research on the field of religious history, and discusses the works and authors that inspired him. Basing his books on the qualitative analysis of a large body of documentation, Gagnon wrote in a lively and accessible style. He sought to reconstruct the history of pastoral care, of Catholic traditions and of the material living conditions experienced by Lower Canadian priests. Using a wide range of thoroughly analyzed examples, Gagnon showed how the clergy exercised its power. He also attempted to pinpoint the reasons why the communities he studied embraced the Church’s message. Three major influences run through his works : the sociology of knowledge, French religious historiography and American sociologists critical of individualism and consumer society. The latter group echoed Gagnon’s own anxiety about the contemporary Quebec lifestyle, which he contrasted to the Catholic customs that shaped the life of Lower Canadian communities. Objectives: There are presently no data available concerning Internet addiction (IA) problems among adolescents in Canada and the province of Quebec. The goal of this study is thus to document and compare the influence of gender on Internet use and addiction.Method: The study data were collected from a larger research project on gambling among adolescents. Activities conducted online (applications used and time spent) as well as answers to the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) were collected from 3938 adolescents from grades 9 to 11. The two most often employed cut-off points for the IAT in the literature were documented: (40-69 and 70+) and (50+).Results: Boys spent significantly more time on the Internet than did girls. A greater proportion of the girls made intense use of social networks, whereas a greater proportion of the boys made intense use of massively multiplayer online role-playing games, online games, and adult sites. The proportion of adolescents with a potential IA problem varied according to the cut-off employed. When the cut-off was set at 70+, 1.3% of the adolescents were considered to have an IA, while 41.7% were seen to be at risk. At a 50+ cut-off, 18% of the adolescents were considered to have a problem. There was no significant difference between the genders concerning the proportion of adolescents considered to be at risk or presenting IA problems. Finally, analysis of the percentile ranks would seem to show that a cut-off of 50+ better describes the category of young people at risk.Conclusions: The results of this study make it possible to document Internet use and IA in a large number of Quebec adolescents.
