IntroductionDifferentiating hypertensive heart disease (HHD) from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is crucial yet challenging due to overlapping clinical and morphological features. Recent studies have explored the use of various cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) parameters to distinguish between these conditions, but findings have remained inconclusive. This study aims to identify which CMR parameters effectively discriminate between HHD and HCM and to investigate their underlying pathophysiological mechanisms through a meta-analysis.MethodsThe researchers conducted a systematic and comprehensive search for all studies that used CMR to discriminate between HHD and HCM and calculated the Hedges'g effect size for each of the included studies, which were then pooled using a random-effects model and tested for the effects of potential influencing variables through subgroup and regression analyses.ResultsIn this review, 26 studies encompassing 1,349 HHD and 1,581 HCM cases were included for meta-analysis. Abstract In the global progress of bone tumor research, established stable and long-lasting transgenic chondrosarcoma (CSA) cell lines are rare, mainly of murine and human origin, while the establishment of canine CSA cell lines has yet to be reported. This study established a canine CSA cell line to facilitate the basic clinical study of canine CSA. Fifty five cases of canine osteolytic disease were collected, and more than 10 bone tumor samples from dogs with typical clinical signs were used for primary cell culture. A cell line with stable passaging for more than 100 generations and mouse tumorigenic ability was successfully cultured. According to the clinical characteristics of the dog and the histopathological results of the primary tumor, CSA was diagnosed, and the CSA cell line was designated Mango. Immunohistochemical (IHC) results showed that the immunoreactivity of bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein (BGLAP), secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC), alkaline phosphatase (ALPL), vimentin (VIM) and S100 were positive. However, the immunoreactivity of pan-cytokeratin (PCK), chromogranin A (CGA), and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (CD31) was negative. Immunofluorescence (IF) results showed that the protein expressions in the Mango cell line were consistent with the IHC identification of the primary tumor. The Mango cell line’s doubling time was 43.92 h, and the cell formation rate exceeded 20%. There were abnormal chromosome numbers, hetero staining with toluidine blue, and certain calcification abilities. It could be passaged stably and continuously without changing the cell morphology and characteristics. In vivo, the cells were successfully injected into the nude mice model with a tumorigenic rate of 100%. The immunophenotype of the xenograft tumor was consistent with that of the primary tumor. Therefore, we effectively established a canine CSA cell line. As a promising cell material, this cell line can be used to construct a tumor-bearing model conducive to the subsequent basic research of canine CSA. Moreover, because of its similarity to human CSA, the animal model of CSA is also indispensable for investigating human CSA.

Abstract Lithium-selenium (Li-Se) batteries possess high volumetric capacity and have attracted considerable attention as a high energy storage system. However, the shuttling of polyselenides seriously worsens the electrochemical performance and retards their application advancement. Herein, we engineered a bifunctional membrane consisted of polyethylenimine derived carbon quantum dots (Cdots) to efficiently restrict the shuttling of polyselenides under a high Se loading (Se≈70 wt%) and promote Li-Se conversion kinetics, which can be accounted by the greatly accelerated transportation of charge carriers and dipole–dipole interactions between polar moieties and long-chain polyselenides (Li2Se4 and Li2Se6) as corroborated by theoretical calculations. Thus, the bifunctional membrane endows Li-Se batteries with a specific capacity of 658.60 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and coulombic efficiency of 97.8% in average, and demonstrates the effectiveness of defect-rich Cdots on suppressing polyselenides shuttling and reinforcing Li-Se conversion kinetics in augmenting the battery’s durability and efficiency. Abstract Fiber components form the standard not only in modern telecommunication but also for future quantum information technology. For high-performance single-photon detection, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SPDs) are typically fabricated on a silicon chip and fiber-coupled for easy handling and usage. The fiber-to-chip interface hinders the SPD from being an all-fiber device for full utilization of its excellent performance. Here, we report a scheme of SPD that is directly fabricated on the fiber tip. A bury-and-planar fabrication technique is developed to improve the roughness of the substrate for all-fiber detectors’ performance for single-photon detection with amorphous molybdenum silicide (MoSi) nanowires. The low material selectivity and universal planar process enable fabrication and packaging on a large scale. Such a detector responds to a broad wavelength range from 405 nm to 1550 nm at a dark count rate of 100 cps. The relaxation time of the response pulse is ~ 15 ns, which is comparable to that of on-chip SPDs. Therefore, this device is free from fiber-to-chip coupling and easy packaging for all-fiber quantum information systems.

Background Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid with powerful anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed to explore whether combining intravenous and topical dexamethasone could improve postoperative pain, swelling, and function recovery after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods In this prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled study, 90 patients undergoing primary unilateral TKA were randomized into a dexamethasone group, which received dexamethasone (10 mg) by periarticular infiltration during surgery, as well as intravenous dexamethasone (10 mg) before tourniquet release and at 12 h postoperatively; or a control group, which received equal volumes of isotonic saline instead of dexamethasone. The primary outcome was postoperative pain, as assessed on the visual analogue scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes were postoperative consumption of morphine hydrochloride for rescue analgesia, postoperative swelling ratio of the thigh, knee, and tibia; functional recovery in terms of total range of motion (ROM) of knee and daily ambulation distance; postoperative inflammation biomarkers levels of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6; and postoperative complications. Results Resting VAS scores at postoperative 6, 12, and 24 h, and VAS scores during motion at postoperative 2, 6, 12, and 24 h were significantly lower in the dexamethasone group. The dexamethasone group also showed significantly less morphine consumption during the first 24 h after surgery and cumulatively during hospitalization, milder limb swelling at 24 and 48 h postoperatively, greater flexion and total ROM on postoperative day 1, and longer ambulation distance on postoperative days 1 and 2, and lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers on postoperative days 1 and 2. The dexamethasone group had significantly lower incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Conclusion Compared with placebo, the combination of intravenous and topical dexamethasone can reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation after TKA, it also can improve functional recovery and reduce the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting.

Unlocking the ultimate potential of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors requires engineering their thermal properties. Here, the authors improve our understanding of heat flow in these devices and suggest routes to improved performance.

Randomised controlled experiments are the gold standard for scientific inference, but environmental and social scientists often rely on different study designs. Here the authors analyse the use of six common study designs in the fields of biodiversity conservation and social intervention, and quantify the biases in their estimates.

Superconducting series nanowire single-photon detectors (SNDs) have been used for resolving photon numbers. But it can also exhibit a higher counting rate than a single superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD), because the serial architecture allows multiple detectors working in parallel and the inductance of each pixel is reduced. In this paper, we found each pixel of the SND could reset fast although the whole detector took a much longer time for recovering. Therefore, the speed of an SND with a large kinetic inductance of 1.25 μH was characterized and compared to a standard SNSPD with the same total inductance. By measuring the detected photon rate over the input photon rate, we obtained a photon counting rate enhancement by 7.5 times. Meanwhile, the timing jitter of the SND was 63 ps at single photon detection regime. Our results show that the series structure and the readout scheme are quite practical in realizing high speed single-photon detectors besides resolving photon numbers.

Over a decade of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have led to the finding of extreme polygenicity of complex traits. The phenomenon that "all genes affect every complex trait" complicates Mendelian Randomization (MR) studies, where natural genetic variations are used as instruments to infer the causal effect of heritable risk factors. We reexamine the assumptions of existing MR methods and show how they need to be clarified to allow for pervasive horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneous effect sizes. We propose a comprehensive framework GRAPPLE to analyze the causal effect of target risk factors with heterogeneous genetic instruments and identify possible pleiotropic patterns from data. By using GWAS summary statistics, GRAPPLE can efficiently use both strong and weak genetic instruments, detect the existence of multiple pleiotropic pathways, determine the causal direction and perform multivariable MR to adjust for confounding risk factors. With GRAPPLE, we analyze the effect of blood lipids, body mass index, and systolic blood pressure on 25 disease outcomes, gaining new information on their causal relationships and potential pleiotropic pathways involved.

Recent genetic data can offer important insights into the roles of lipoprotein subfractions and particle sizes in preventing coronary artery disease (CAD), as previous observational studies have often reported conflicting results. We used the LD score regression to estimate the genetic correlation of 77 subfraction traits with traditional lipid profile and identified 27 traits that may represent distinct genetic mechanisms. We then used Mendelian randomization (MR) to estimate the causal effect of these traits on the risk of CAD. In univariable MR, the concentration and content of medium high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles showed a protective effect against CAD. The effect was not attenuated in multivariable analyses. Multivariable MR analyses also found that small HDL particles and smaller mean HDL particle diameter may have a protective effect. We identified four genetic markers for HDL particle size and CAD. Further investigations are needed to fully understand the role of HDL particle size.

Photon-number-resolving (PNR) is an important functionality in many applications. The traditional single photon detectors (SNSPDs) operated with the conventional readout scheme does not have the PNR functionality. In this paper, we demonstrate a superconducting photon-number-resolving detector operating at the visible wavelength regime, based on the serial connection of six superconducting nanowires. The results of our 6-element PNR device show clear evidence of n-photons differentiation with n ranging from 1 to 6. The system detection efficiency reaches 54% with the dark counts rate below 10 Hz at 660 nm. The demonstrated 6-element PNR device does not require a complex readout circuit compared with the SNSPD array device, and is expected to have wider applications in addition to imaging and communication.

(♂♀), P. yuanjiangensis Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♀) and P. zixiensis Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♂); seven from Myanmar: P. colubrina Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♂♀), P. daxing Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♂), P. gexiao Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♂), P. putaoensis Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♂), P. subbirmanica Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♂♀), P. titan Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♂♀), P. xia Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♂); and one from Thailand: P. maeklongensis Zhao & Li, sp. n. (♂). A distribution map of the new species is also provided.

In weakly cemented reservoirs or coal-bed methane reservoirs, the conductivity of hydraulic fractures always declines after a period of production, which greatly influences gas production. In this paper, a comprehensive model considering fine-grained particle migration and proppant embedment is proposed to give a precise prediction for conductivity decline. Then, an experiment was conducted to simulate this process. A published experiment using coal fines was also tested and simulated. The results indicate that both fine-grained particle migration and proppant embedment have great negative effect on conductivity of fractures in weakly cemented sandstone and coal-bed methane reservoirs. The formulation we proposed matches the experimental data smoothly and can be widely used in the prediction of conductivity decline in weakly cemented sandstone and coal-bed methane reservoirs. In order to discuss the influencing factors of the filtration coefficient in the particle transport model, a porous media network model was established based on the theoretical model. The simulation results show that the filtration coefficient increases with the increase in particle size and/or throat size, and the filtration coefficient increases with the decrease in the fluid velocity. At the same time, it was found that the large larynx did not easily cause particle retention. Large size particles tend to cause particle retention.

Eye degeneration is one of the most obvious characteristics of organisms restricted to subterranean habitats. In cavefish, eye degeneration has evolved independently numerous times and each process is associated with different genetic mechanisms. To gain a better understanding of these mechanisms, we compared the eyes of adult individuals of the cave loach Triplophysa rosa and surface loach Triplophysa bleekeri. Compared with the normal eyes of the surface loach, those of the cave loach were found to possess a small abnormal lens and a defective retina containing photoreceptor cells that lack outer segments. Sequencing of the transcriptomes of both species to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and genes under positive selection revealed 4,802 DEGs and 50 genes under positive selection (dN/dS > 1, FDR < 0.1). For cave loaches, we identified one Gene Ontology category related to vision that was significantly enriched in downregulated genes. Specifically, we found that many of the downregulated genes, including pitx3, lim2, crx, gnat2, rx1, rho, prph2, and β|γ-crystallin are associated with lens/retinal development and maintenance. However, compared with those in the surface loach, the lower dS rates but higher dN rates of the protein-coding sequences in T. rosa indicate that changes in amino acid sequences might be involved in the adaptation and visual degeneration of cave loaches. We also found that genes associated with light perception and light-stimulated vision have evolved at higher rates (some genes dN/dS > 1 but FDR > 0.1). Collectively, the findings of this study indicate that the degradation of cavefish vision is probably associated with both gene expression and amino acid changes and provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the degeneration of cavefish eyes.

A new linyphiid genus Callosa gen. n., with two new species Callosa ciliata sp. n. (♂♀, type species) and Callosa baiseensis sp. n. (♂♀), from southwest China are described. Detailed description of genitalic characters and somatic features is provided, as well as light microscopy and SEM micrographs of each species. Callosa gen. n. was found in caves in Yunnan and Guangxi, and its copulatory organs are similar to those of Bathyphantes and Porrhomma, but differ greatly in details. The monophyly and placement of Callosa gen. n. are supported by the results of molecular analysis.

In this paper, the specimens of steel bars covered by concrete (SBCC) are taken as research objects, and a new method for steel bar internal force detection based on the metal magnetic memory effect is proposed. The variation law of the self-magnetic flux leakage (SMFL) signals on the surfaces of SBCC specimens with loading tension and the variation of the SMFL signals along the axial positions of specimens under different tensile forces are studied. The results show that when the loading tension is about 90% of the yield tension, the tangential component of the SMFL signal has a maximum extreme point. The distribution of the SMFL signals along the axial position shows a smooth curve, where the values at both ends are small while the intermediate values are large. This paper also proposes the use of the “area ratio deviation parameter” to quantitatively calculate the internal forces of the steel bars. This parameter shows a significant linear relationship with the loading tension during the strengthening stage of the specimens. This method can supplement the existing steel bar stress detection methods and has prospective research value.

Order Acipenseriformes contains 27 extant species distributed across the northern hemisphere, including so-called “living fossil” species of garfish and sturgeons. Previous studies have focused on their mitochondrial genetics and have rarely used nuclear genetic data, leaving questions as to their phylogenetic relationships. This study aimed to utilize a bioinformatics approach to screen for candidate single-copy nuclear genes, using transcriptomic data from sturgeon species and genomic data from the spotted gar, Lepisosteus oculatus. We utilized nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and degenerate primers to identify nuclear protein-coding (NPC) gene markers to determine phylogenetic relationships among the Acipenseriformes. We identified 193 nuclear single-copy genes, selected from 1850 candidate genes with at least one exon larger than 700 bp. Forty-three of these genes were used for primer design and development of 30 NPC markers, which were sequenced for at least 14 Acipenseriformes species. Twenty-seven NPC markers were found completely in 16 species. Gene trees according to Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) were calculated based on the 30 NPC markers (20,946 bp total). Both gene and species trees produced very similar topologies. A molecular clock model estimated the divergence time between sturgeon and paddlefish at 204.1 Mya, approximately 10% later than previous estimates based on cytochrome b data (184.4 Mya). The successful development and application of NPC markers provides a new perspective and insight for the phylogenetic relationships of Acipenseriformes. Furthermore, the newly developed nuclear markers may be useful in further studies on the conservation, evolution, and genomic biology of this group.

Two new genera of the spider family Theridiosomatidae, Alaria gen.n. with the type species Alaria chengguanensis sp. n., Menglunia gen.n. with the type species Menglunia inaffecta sp. n., are described from Guizhou and Yunnan, China. Nine more new species from Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan and Yunnan Provinces of southern China are described: Baalzebub rastrarius sp. n., B. youyiensis sp. n., Karstia nitida sp. n., K. prolata sp. n., Ogulnius hapalus sp. n., Theridiosoma plumaria sp. n., T. triumphalis sp. n., T. vimineum sp. n., Zoma fascia sp. n. The type specimens are deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.
